- This video is a Japan winter photography vlog filmed in the extreme north of Japan - Wakkanai and Cape Soya, on the island of Hokkaido. On this trip I'm with my photographer friend, Ted Hamilton and we tackle some extreme winter photography, including street photography, urbex photography, minimalist photography, and snow storm photography in a remote corner of Japan.
Whether you are planning to go to Japan or just enjoy some virtual travel, you have come to the right place. Japan Photo Explore is a series of travel and photography vlogs and videos that show you some amazing places, some you’ve probably never heard of.

At Chitose, they told me "You always come back to Hokkaido." You have the pictures I would have dreamed of getting 20 years ago. JPE takes off-season travel to a whole other level!
Thank you, Jane for that wonderful feedback. They were right at Chitose. I'm in Hokkaido right now - my fifth trip.
Very nice place 😊
ТОYOKHARA...🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵 ( Sakhalin- JAPAN 🇯🇵🇯🇵👍👍👍)..
Excellent Japan winter photography and editing also, very useful detailed information congratulations 🙏
Thank you, Sivayam! I really appreciate your feedback. Now that Japan has re-opened, II will be back in early 2023 to shoot more videos.
I was born there April of 1959 my dad was stationed at the Air Base there. Went back to Texas and returned 4 years later m went to grade school there. Would like to go back home one day.
Thanks for sharing your story, Carl. Hope you manage to go back. Cheers.
recommend getting fingerless gloves and slapping one of those heat packs in your gloves. It helps heaps with handling the camera at those cold temps, although I've never been as north as wakkanai before.
The landscape is surreal I witnessed it in Sapporo thanks for the video it brings back my memories
Hi Khalid, really pleased you enjoyed the video. I appreciate the feedback. Cheers.
ahhh this has happaned to me once before re:bad flight. What ended up happening is we landed in hakodate instead and then took a short connecting flight to new chitose when the weather got better.
I guess that's the risk when you're flying to Hokkaido in winter. But I wouldn't hesitate to risk it again! Glad you made it to your destination.
Stunning.
Thanks, Celia! Glad you enjoyed it.
What date and month you fly to Wakkanai for this trip? Thank you very much.
What temperature you trouble in wakkanai that day?
It was about -15 deg celsius, which felt cold enough, but in the exposed areas, the wind chill factor made it feel like -25 or -30!
Wow! That’s mind blowing! We are planning our second trip to Hokkaidō for this December, but we guess it won’t be that snowed.
When did you go when the video was recorded?
You’ve done a flawless job!
Thanks for the feedback! This was shot in February 2019, but it was in Wakkanai, way up north, which gets more snow than further south in Hokkaido. Hope you have a great trip!
