Sapporo at Night - Snowy Street Photography.
Hokkaido Street Photography. Join me for some night street photography in Sapporo, Japan. It is winter and I am in Susukino, Sapporo's vibrant entertainment area. I go out to take some photos in 'blue hour', but can't believe my luck as it starts to snow and I am treated to the opportunity to do some snowy street photography on a Saturday night in Susukino. For this shoot I am using my Fujifilm X-T4.
Sometimes when you travel and go out to take photos, it all just comes together for you. For me, this is one of those times.

    Interesting.... I traveled through Muroran a few years ago by accident and stayed the night because it was much cheaper than other places in the larger area. I ended up driving through an area on the hills surrounding the steel plant and it was absolutely fascinating. I had never seen a steel plant before and I have to say the sight and sheer size is impressive. No regrets coming through.

    • @nickpitsasphoto
      @nickpitsasphoto 23 дня назад

      No. Its when your camera is very cold from being outside for a while, then go into a warm space, that your lens fogs up. If your camera is in a camera bag when you come inside, leave it in the bag for a couple of hours so that it warms up gradually.

    Very nice location. I recently moved to Athens (About 3 months ago) and i also recently started with street photography. I have struggled with Athens since i would really like to go for architecture photos. But in my opinion Athens is not the city for that since alot of the buildings feels like copy and paste. I have alot of time left to explore and also to learn more about street photography but i really liked the theme you were going for.

    I was cold just watching this Nick. Credit to you hanging round as the temps started dropping! I enjoyed your still images showing us what caught your eye on that walk. What’s the different process between the white snow sculptures and the clear ice ones? And can the sculptors repair any mistakes just by slapping slushy ice onto the existing structures. I watched a sand sculptor a few weeks back in Newcastle and his technique didnt really leave a lot of room for mistakes.

    • @nickpitsasphoto
      @nickpitsasphoto 8 месяцев назад

      Thanks for your feedback, Malcolm! The bears were sculpted with ice, not snow like most of the sculptures. Ice sculpting is less forgiving. Much harder to put a chunk of ice back compared to grabbing a handful of snow to add to your work.

      @nickpitsasphoto 10 месяцев назад

      Thanks, Lucien. Glad you enjoyed the video. I have been there in the third week of February and there's been plenty of snow. So I think there's a good chance there will still be snow there at the end of February. On average, the daily maximum temperature would still be below freezing, so whatever snow is on the ground is unlikely to start melting yet.

      Autumn comes early to Hokkaido. By the third week in November you're more likely to get snow around Biei than autumn foliage. But you'll probably be there at the best time to photograph the nearby Blue Pond. For Autumn colors at that time of the year, you need to be much further south around, say, Kyoto. You can probably tell from the video that my favorite time to visit Biei is winter. Sorry, I've not used any local support so can't comment on that. Hope you have a great trip!

    Interesting old snow-buried buildings Nick and their slow demise is a bit poignant I thought. Was intrigued by ‘kombu’ and ‘love hotels’ - but I know I can google that. Liked your thoughts about lucky dip photography. Although I wonder if that’s actually the nature of location photography most of the time. Even ina National park, there are so many factors which can make or challenge the making of intriguing images. (Often too many people at well known locations for example). I’d be keen to hear if you have a particular thought process when you arrive somewhere and eg the light is not what you’d typically like? Because i assume you are not camping at a location waiting for a break in they clouds for hours on end like some landscape devotees. In other episodes you have talked about adapting to the situation and being open to finding something different to what you might have hoped or expected for that location/expedition. 👌🏻 I have been encouraged by some of the photographers I have heard talk about no expectations, only the openness to be sensitive to what evokes an emotion in them when they are out.

    • @nickpitsasphoto
      @nickpitsasphoto Год назад

      Hi Malcolm. Thank you for your considered and thoughtful feedback. I mentioned national parks because there are specific viewpoints that most people go to, and apart from variations in light and weather, you know the kind of shot you are going to get. My favourite kind of photography is exploring an area that I don't know well, then finding something unusual or unexpected. I totally agree with going out with minimal expectations and just responding to what you see.
