I bet they are. I own a Peruvian blanket poncho made from alpaca wool. Amazing stuff. It keeps me perfectly dry in the rain, the wool is water repellent and so much lighter and softer compared to sheep's wool
My son was killed 18 months ago and I have really been struggling. I’ve been going to an alpaca farm the past couple of months visiting them. I spend time learning about them and their needs, caring for them, their diet, all their do’s and don’t They have become my therapy. SO MUCH BETTER than seeing a grief counselor, in my opinion. I know my son is looking down on me with a smile. I know he approves. I can feel him there with me. And I’m telling you…. those beautiful creatures know I’m heartbroken and they’re trying to help me heal - as crazy as that sounds. Their eyes say it all. My goal now is to be ready for my 3 next year.
Wonderfully educational. Believe it or not my 2 year old is obsessed with them and we watch this video a lot. He loves watching you talk about them. And if down the road he becomes a caretaker of these wonderful animals he’s getting a great head start on knowledge!
Thank you for being so authentic and real about alpaca. I see so many bad owners who keep 1 alpaca with a goat or worse... I alpaca with a dog. And think that is A-OK. When I ever get an alpaca it will be always THREE.
I just started working in a minizoo taking care of alpacas and some other animals, and literally no one knows what they are doing! So I am doing a bit of research to help organize everything correctly, this is really helpful
Alpacas are so cute...like soft toys roaming around..I visited an Alpaca Farm recently in Colorado, US...it was a great experience....made a video too....can't forget that day...watching the videos itself now makes me feel so happy :) Regards!
We are considering alpacas so this video is a helpful place to start, thanks. Just a bit of feedback: Not sure if it’s just me, but I find the background music distracting. I think because of the whistling.
I plan on getting 2, I know you said the magic number is 3 and I know why.. but I plan on taking really good care of them. The reason you want 3 is in case one gets sick and passes away, then the other isn’t super sad because they still have one companion to vibe with.. loved the video! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love this lady at least as much as the alpaca she is with. Everything in and about this video is SOOOOO CUUUUUUTE. I love when the brown one stares at the camera at around 8:24 :)
We've been offered three adult male alpacas, and one female (free!). Thanks to this video I now know they would need to continue to be segregated. Very helpful on many topics, thanks for posting!

Very informative, especially about their feeding needs. I was wondering: how much space do they need? We're concidering to keep two or three alpacas in our back yard, but not sure we have enough space for them to fare well there.
@@HappyTailsAnimals thank you! Then we may be able to keep three, so that would be good for them. We'll be looking into care and costs of care more before making the decision!

Not sure how you are using the term socializing here? Sounds like you mean in terms of how would you socialize a dog. If so, first thing to understand is that they are not dogs.
G'day I have just purchased a farm in Australia with 2 lovely Alpacas Alphie and Lennie they are 7 years old and both wethers. I have been trying to bond with them but they are a bit skittish. I have managed to feed them fresh Mulberry leaves to coax them to me. What else can I try to be friend the 2 boys? Any tips appreciated 😁
I have not raised alpacas and llamas but just by watching their behavior they could be extremely flighty at times especially the babies. obviously I want to at some point.
Out of the 4 camelids in South America, only the guanaco lives in the wild. Llamas and alpacas have been domesticated by ancient Peruvians thousands of years ago. The tiny Vicuña is semi domesticated, meaning, they live in the wild but need to be sheared once a year as well. Instead of feeding the vicuñas, indigenous communities have built fences that surround huge extensions of grassland so vicuñas won't escape and get easy to chase, sheared and released every year. Alpacas descend from vicuñas, whereas llamas descend from guanacos.
We are moving to a property in a few weeks and inheriting their 4 well-loved alpacas...the thing im confused about is they have 2 boys 3 and 1, their 6year old mum and her 4 year old sister living together. After your video im now under the impression the boys should be separated from thd girls....or in this suitation being family does that change things? Don't wantvto seperate them unless i have to....appreciate your help😊
The first thing you should learn about animals is that their relationship to one another, mother son father daughter, changes nothing. These people were not follow reccomended guidelines.
It really depends on your situation. Personally I wouldn't unless I was having problems with an aggressive male. I've heard other farmers make the claim that the coat quality goes down if the male is left in tact. Idk I think that might be a myth.
we have purchased a property that has two Alpaca. We have not moved yet so do not know the sex or age. If I were to get an additional one, would you recommend a Llama or Alpaca? Also is there any issues with age of the new addition in relation to the other two?
@Edwin Moore yeah but people like you discard them once they are no longer useful. And alpacas really suffer when they go to homesteads like that were the chickens and cows are supposed to make money.

They are a herd animal. 2 is not a herd. If you can’t support three then look for another type of pet. Goats do well in pairs.

What would you recommend for people who live in places with cold winters and lots of snow to do with alpacas during the winter?
As long as they have shelter, a fully enclosed barn they will be fine. Alpacas actually enjoy snow.
I never knew they were so complex. Very interesting.
