    Amazing how modern the graphic design of the packaging looks. It could have been designed yesterday.

      A lot of things designed in the 60s are very well thought out. Whenever I designed for work, I always look at designs from the 60s for references.

    The parallax-correcting framelines on a P are 35-50-100. There is no 135, which is just as well since the magnified RF view was omitted (compared to its big brother the VI-L), another weak point of this camera i the limited rangefinder effective baselength (41 mm I believe), which is insufficient to focus the 135/3.5 wide open close up, also 100/2 and 50/1.2 for the same reasons (wide open and close up), but this camera is great with with a 35/2 or 35/2.8, a 50/1.8 or 50/2.2 (made specifically for the P) and a 100/3.5. A great troika!

    This is an awesome camera! Thank you for sharing. I did buy a repainted one form Shueido Camera which is great and working perfectly. I couldn't be happier. I whish soooo much that Canon would make e new range finder style camera. I would be the first person in line to get one. 🤗

      Now that Leica is rumored to be releasing a new rangefinder film camera, maybe it will motivate Canon and Nikon to do the same.

    Hello, thank you very much for this inspiring video and your servicing tipps. I have been asked several times to buy a black P body but I always refused because of the danger to buy a fake. Nevertheless I do own some chrome P bodies besides the wonderful VI-L and VI-T and the L-3, L and L-2 or VT de luxe and so on. Once I bought a Canonflex RP in black which also seems to be repainted but I love its look.
    The manual or ad with the big 495 on the cover seems to be a version from a neighbour country, but its not german.
    Kind regards, Thomas

    Can you do a short repair video on steps to remove tough to open screws/ stripped screws?

    • @vogxn
      @vogxn Год назад

      @@Ron-us1sp thanks, those are useful tips. In my case it wasn't brass screws but I've dealt with those in the past and acetone helped ease out the screw.
      I was having a particularly tough time with another set from a seikosha shutter. Tried acetone, lighter fluid, heating with a hair dryer and nothing would budge. After about a week, threw in the towel.
      So I've been wondering what camera techs typically do with these.

    Any advice or best practice to deal with the strap lugs position? Like are there adapters or half cases so the camera doesn’t angle upwards constantly?

      @Saxon Eyles im using the Jupiter 12 and that one is pretty light, that’s true. I just ordered a screw for the tripod mount so I will try out a Leica M5 style strapmount.

    Hello. I would like some advice. I can't decide between VL and P which one should I choose. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each one? And the 50mm chrome lens, which one should I choose, 1.2 or 1.4?

      Hello, in 1969 or 1970 canon published a pocket book called canon interchangeable lenses and it has a lot of information about canons Rangefinder (S) and FL lenses. It includes a list of all the matching accessories and if I remember it well it contains a list of the auto up. On each of these adapters there is an info about the matching lens engraved. Unfortunately I do not have the book or an adaptor at hand today.

      The viewfinder is large enough for most people who wear glasses, and it has a non-scratch surface so it won't scratch or damage. Keep in mind that a large percentage of Japanese, if not most, wore glasses back when these cameras were designed.

    A very rare camera. I would guess that there are more fake "black" P units out there (chrome repainted black) than real ones. This one lost the case and acquired the lens somewhere in the last 60 years. From the shop wear on the body, we might wish otherwise. In the 1980s and 90s, I collected a cross-section of Canon RF bodies from the IVSb through to the 7Sz. I skipped the P at the time because there was (and is) nothing special or interesting about it, and at that time it was overpriced. In the 2000s the used prices on a P dropped like a stone, half off or more, but by then, I'd stopped collecting. Today (2023), prices have mostly returned, although much of that is inflation. IMO, to paraphrase Churchill, the P has much to be modest about. Its cluttered viewfinder is the worst Canon offered from the V models on. The shutter is shared with the 7 and 7S, loosing spec on its high speeds and being unrepairable, outside perhaps a few shops in Japan which can manufacture the unique parts required. (I.E., at a price far more than the camera is worth)

    • @japanvintagecamera8869
      @japanvintagecamera8869  6 месяцев назад

      10 years ago I could buy a P with a lens and a meter for less than $100 in Japan. I'm lucky to find one for 3 times that price today. Luckily, the shutter is very reliable in these cameras, and I have yet to find one which was beyond my self-taught ability to repair.

    • @randallstewart1224
      @randallstewart1224 6 месяцев назад

      @@japanvintagecamera8869 I wish the shutter in my 7 enjoyed your experience. As for the P, when I was collecting, the bottom have not yet fallen out of their price, but they were plentiful and relatively cheap, I figured that if I acquired a need to have one, doing so would be no big deal. I only reconsidered when I saw the prices rising, but it was no longer a priority for me. Here in the US, the meter alone would get $100 in the 1990s if it was working properly.
