Gozer also known as Gozer the Gozerian, Gozer the Destructor, Gozer the Traveler, Volguus Zildrohar and Lord of the Sebouillia, is the main antagonist of Ghostbusters.
It is an ancient, ultra-powerful, malignant entity from another dimension who was summoned to New York City to destroy the world. Gozer was originally worshiped as a god by the Hittites, Mesopotamians, and the Sumerians around 6000 BC. Gozer is genderless, though it first appears as a female in the movie because it chose to be.
It was worshiped by the powerful Cult of Gozer. Gozer has two trusted minions - themselves worshiped as demi-gods - that are harbingers of destruction and primary agents for its arrival: Vinz Clortho, The Keymaster and Zuul, The Gatekeeper.
Gozer the Destructor's earliest known appearance was in Mesopotamia around 6000 BC and was worshiped by both the Hittites and Mesopotamians. It rose to prominence in Sumer thousands of years later. During that time, various cults arose to worship it and in a short time, developed their own hierarchy and system of ritual magic.
Ghostbusters is a 1984 American supernatural comedy film directed and produced by Ivan Reitman and written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis.
It stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis as Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Egon Spengler, a trio of eccentric parapsychologists who start a ghost-catching business in New York City. The film also stars Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis, and features Annie Potts, William Atherton, and Ernie Hudson in supporting roles.

It's crazy to think that the NYC skyline behind them is a giant cyclorama painting going around the whole Roof Top set. That is an old school effect that has sadly been replaced by CGI. Whomever painted that has some serious talent.

Wow the combination of the sound design and Elmer Berstein's musical score as Gozer's portal is opening is such an epic moment in the movie!

Part of Ghostbusters 2's problem was not having Elmer Bernstein score it.
I always personally thought Gozer was terrifying, the EYES, the VOICE the MOVEMENT. Watching this movie for the first time, 2:52 made me flinch.

I found it rather comical. Love the movie but Gozer was nothing scary at all. I laughed as a kid, I said it sounded like a cartoon morning villain all high pitched and silly lol
So much of this film hinges on the voice actress for Gozer being as good as anything out of The Exorcist or The Shining - the sing-song quality when it starts the "foul creatures" speech, transitioning from dismissing humanity as vermin to deigning them with its list of names and titles, top tier stuff.
"Foul creatures, Gozer the Gozerian, Gozer the Destructor, Vorgas (?) the Traveller has. Choose and perish."
"Choose the form of the Destructor."
Honestly, I think this version of the temple is still more beautiful than the one in their latest film. Also, it's more epic to battle Gozer on the building's roof top than in a farm. Just my opinion.

@Obama Bin Laden Dude, very very VERY few people ever said that. Most don’t care and loved it period. The kid characters were not bad. The lore was good. The story wasn’t bad. And the nostalgia, feel and call back was great. None of it was a “soulless cash grab”because the director of the film, Jason Reitman put a lot of heart into it. He loved his father’s work and cared about it so much. You’re just being a troll because you’re trying to ruin people’s fun. I mean, what do I expect from an account named “Obama Bin Laden”? That’s like prime troll account name 101. Just the very look and name alone, speaks troll. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤣🤣
@Obama Bin Laden Bruh, I loved the movie personally for what it is. I’m not “going with the crowd” or “jumping on any bandwagon”. I’m speaking for myself and for those who love it. I felt it was a great send off to the original films and was a decent legacy.
And so does a mass majority of others.

Yep, I always thought the stuff just seemed authentic, and then I studied ancient religion in college and it was-A ziggurat type stair structure where the Hittite/Sumerian god descends. Throne guardian monsters, sex rituals.
They made it a comedy I guess to not be a terror movie but they needed the scary stuff & all so they're more heroic. Creepy but watchable for most of the public to the point where only details noticed by some people may creep out certain people but the layout of the movie as a whole is just an awesome action adventure movie as a result

Brilliant movie. Some schlubby exterminators accidentally stumble upon an HP Lovecraft story. Even here at the end, I’m not entirely sure Venkman understands - or gives a shit - about what’s going on lol.

This is my theory about this scene I feel like if ray didn't approach her in a respectable manner (as funny as that is) they would have never had that opportunity to choose their destructor And I feel like ray couldn't clear his mind because he was the only one that directly talked to her

I know this is supposed to be a comedy, but I've always appreciated and loved the visuals and special FX in Ghostbusters.

Gozer's world reminds me of the movie Labyrinth.

1:29: Even though Gozer seems like an evil, demonic god, the light pouring out when the doorway opens is golden in colour, which doesn't usually suggest a hellish type realm. I really want to know what it looks like on the other side of that doorway. The realm Gozer came from.

Gods don't see the utter destruction as evil. That would be against their nature. Gozer believed in his core that he was not only just, but right and a necessary part of the "circle of life"

They really marketed this as a comedy and yeah it is funny, but to me it will always be a legit sci-fi fantasy. Never met a kid or adult who has watched the movie and not been enthralled.
Originally, Winston was supposed to say, "Ray, you should've said YES. Maybe it was willing to negotiate."
Even after being blasted, the ghostbusters don’t back down without a fight.

As an adult it’s easy to relate to Venkman deriving all of his insouciance here from his expectation that he’s going to die imminently soon 😅
So sad that in Ghostbuster Afterlife they completely ignored that Gozer is whatever he wants to be and just gave him this girl form forever. And the Gatekeeper at some point was searching for the Keymaster, which is just nonsense. Otherwise great movie.
You cropped the original aspect ratio so we're missing the left and right part of the frame, which was used fully in this movie. I'm not complaining but you should have increased the black bars so we got the full picture.
I feel like in my lifetime i would see something like this but location would take place somewhere in The middle east!
Like on a ziggurat in Iraq or something? That's basically what the temple in this movie is.
The early idea was for Gozer to appear as Evo Shandour, the architect and he would've been played by Paul Reubens(best known as Pee-Wee Herman).
The Ghostbusters couldn't even hit Gozer with the proton stream after it had absorbed the energy of the ghosts that escaped from the ecto-containment unit to become stronger and faster.

@@deronlouis88louis52 Well, of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Peter, Ray and Winston were able to restrain Gozer by crossing the proton streams and trapped it with the help of Egon's daughter Callie, his grandkids Phoebe and Trevor, their friends Podcast and Lucky and Egon as a ghost himself.

This depiction of Gozer is so much better than the one in afterlife. Afterlife had some good moments, and I liked that they changed the formula for the first 2/3 of the movie, but they really should have created a new protaganist. It was jarring.
