From director Jason Reitman and producer Ivan Reitman comes the next chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe. If someone had told me that Olivia Wilde was going to show up as Gozir, I would have been very doubtful that it would work. But hot damn, she was great casting for Gozir. I was like "Wait...is that Olivia Wilde?" She's totally got the face for it. Great stuff.

Bob Gunton (who played the warden on The Shawshank Redemption) played Egon in the beginning of the film, with make up prosthetics and in the dark to leave his face "vague"
My nephew thought Gozer was James Charles and in theaters he yelled “hi sisters!”

And they look better than a lot of CGI.
It’s the only thing that adds nostalgia to it. The writing is pathetic. Just as hollow as the rest of the rushed reboots.

I totally understand why the filmmakers want to reprise the story about Gozer again. It's so nostalgic to listen the good old tunes and that fabulous Gozer's sanctuary with nowadays effect.
Yes it's nostalgic but it's also incredibly lazy/easy road to take.
@@Garsons-oq4lh Not really. I hate it when movies don’t use themes established in the previous installment so hearing Elmer Bernstein’s Score with new elements was a joy.
As to Gozer’s return, it sort of plays into an idea that the past always comes back to get you. It’s also cool to see Gozer actually kick ass as Gozer and not as Stay Puft. The new effects allows wonders to the villain. But I understand how people see it as lazy.
Well Gozer was their first, and considered to be their archenemy. But now that she’s/it’s been defeated again, I think they should move on to newer and fresher villains for the next movie. Even in the Real and Extreme Ghostbuster series they dealt with a variety of villains.
@Maxx Rice Well hopefully they have a new villain for future installments. Unfortunately I heard they might revisit Vigo the Carpathian again which I hope they don’t do, because I want a fresher villain.
Plus, Gozer's technically a god, so it's fitting for her to be able to survive nuclear energy blasts.

Honestly, Phoebe was the best addition to the universe since '84. I loved this movie.

They could easily make her look like what Phoebe would look like at 15. 2. Even if they go the other direction and try to make her look like that, it'd just be at best an extension of a bad joke from Afterlife at best and at worst the old cliche of her changing her looks and confidence now that she knows she's a destined Ghostbuster.

The fidelity to the original design is really incredible and very satisfying.

@@curtissimmons2287 Gozer is costumed and coiffed the same, down to thee flat top and the bumps on the skin-hugging suit. Very similar voice effect for Gozer, too. The dogs are EXACTLY the same, and even the look one of them gives to the ghostbusters is the same. They also turn from human to dog with very similar effects in almost exactly the same transformation. The stairs are made of much the same elements and same colour, though not exactly the same design. The obelisks are positioned differently, but they are designed almost exactly the same. The effects are similar. When the 'gatekeeper' and the 'keymaster' ascend the stairs it looks very much the same as the original, even down to the camera angle and the keymaster's shocked hair style. Get the old movie and watch the 2 scenes. Very similar.

4:32 is a beautiful scene, even if it’s like 5 seconds long.
The roar of the V8, the music cue of Elmer Bernstein’s GB theme, the thunder crackling, it all just goes together so well.
I just want more of the Ecto-1 doing things like that because it’s cool AF.

Phoebe is such an adorable and cool character and they really did Gozer justice. One of my favorite villains.
This couldn't have been a better way to bring back the franchise. I cried when I saw Sigourney and Bill playing that damn electro shock game. All I can say about Gozer is WERK DIVA!

was really skeptical to watch this but was blown away, loved every minute and the Gozer sequences were spectacular the girl with the glasses would do great as Velma in a new scooby doo movie.

I agree the red eye detail would have stayed true to the original and actually I felt this section of the film was massively rushed. We barely had time to take in seeing ivo shandor and I was expecting Gozer to take a larger form for the final battle. That would be my only real criticism of Afterlife though.

Things I never noticed: The fire ghost is chasing fire fighters.
There's wind inside as the woman at the diner sees the miner.
Also Gozer's new internal lightning effect is really fun to pause and cycle through. Especially as its ghastly cardiovascular system gets ripped from its body.
While Gozer is attributed to Oliva Wilde and she was the main actress for the role, actually it was played by three people. Olivia Wilde plays Gozer in the solid, corporeal form in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. However, her performance is combined with two other actors to create Gozer's complete character. Canadian dancer and choreographer Emma Portner plays Gozer's CGI spirit form, presumably through motion capture, while Shohreh Aghdashloo is the creepy and high-pitched voice of Gozer. It is one of the composite characters in the film.

Ancient Sumerian demigod that sent ancient civilizations and contemporary NYC into absolute mayhem...and Phoebe just walks up casually to tell it a few jokes. That's fucking epic lol.

4:38 Nice touch on the sign. Reminds me of the rabbis, priests, and pastors holding up "Sinners, repent, for the end is near" signs when Gozer was first descending on the city.

In the original Ghostbusters the two terror dogs were needed to open a big dimensional doorway for Gozer to appear. Gozer was banished by crossing the streams and closing the door.
In this movie the two terror dogs are needed to make Gozer manifest whole. By trapping one of the dogs you weaken Gozer.
A bit inconsistent from the 1st movie but it still works.
I think by removing one of the terror beasts, the "door" closes somewhat, preventing that manifestation.
The Door, The Dogs and Gozer are all linked.
The the dogs are key to opening the gate and they're also the anchors that allow Gozer to remain manifested in the living world.
Interfere with any of those and it banishes her or weakens her.
Honestly they should have had two RC traps. Two kids controlling them and while Gozer's distracted...snag both of them. Effectively send her back.
At the end her essence is separated into multiple traps but what now? She too powerful for the containment unit.
Egon probably had more time to study the relationships between the various elements than when they faced off in New York.
Especially considering Egon won at the beginning already. If he did not lead Phoebe to Vinz Gozer would not have returned to be trapped. You do not need to trap something if the keys are already locked away.
You are absolutely right! I found this problem with Afterlife as well. Plus the fact that there were manifestations of Gozer even before the Terror Dogs united (the Staypuft mini-men in the Wal-mart). Removing a terror dog , furthermore trapping Gozer should not have been possible with traps due to the fact that the dogs were demi-gods and Gozer was a deity, they weren't ghosts. Closing the gate removes Gozer, and that was only done by crossing the streams.

1. The shot of Ecto-1 driving towards the mountain ( at the start of this clip ) is beautiful

This movie was like a massive apology for Trashbusters 2016, the Last Jedi and every reboot that treated the original cast and characters like shit. Such a good movie that showed you can introduce a new cast and pay respect to the old one, serving to make both a new and an old audience happy. Just amazing!
My only issues are the callbacks to the original which could have been on the low and that the kids weren't the CHILDREN of Egon rather than the grandchildren because Egon didn't have a family during the events of the first two movies. Men are known to have kids later in their lives with younger women, so it wouldn't have been off that Egon got settled in his 50s with a younger woman and had two kids.

I had no idea this movie had Olivia in it. When I saw it in the theater, I was like "Gozer looks an awful lot like Olivia Wilde." Low and behold.
That threw me too when I first saw her.
My first thought was actually Summer Glau because I’d been binging a show with her in it. I quickly realized it was Olivia but this, for lack of a better phrase, made me realize Summer and Olivia have very similar bone structure

Shohreh Aghdashloo was the absolute perfect choice to voice Gozer. She's got probably one of the most distinctive voices I can think of in the entire industry.

Really glad they updated Gozer's look a bit. The old design was a bit weird, and not in the way they were going for. This look feels much better, and the lightning under the skin is the cherry on top.

I actually completed the Ghostbusters Game before watching this movie and I thought Gozer killed Ivo Shandor for failing her the Ghostbusters Game. I also like to think Shandor can actually move between his mortal form and ghost form.

The game is no longer considered canon unfortuntely, which I think was a huge mistake, but it's theirs to dictate.

This movie was a joy to watch in theaters.
In the original movie Gozer was supposed to take the form of Shandor, appearing as a man in a suit and tie played by Paul “Pee Wee Herman” Reuben’s. He had to drop out due to a schedule conflict so Harold Raimis suggested having Gozer appear as a woman to surprise the audience.

Listen... I thought the movie was "meh," but they made Olivia look soooooo good as Gozer. I was thoroughly pleased how they pulled it off.
This was an example of a stellar movie. The only thing I missed was when the ghosts returned was the song Magic from the first one. Other than that..perfect. hearing the pack turn on was like starting the engine to my childhood.
I like the look on Carrie Coons face when she says "Humpy?". She looks horrified.
