      I'm currently studying sexology and the study and I think the show is ok. Yes the material is a taboo but comedy and it's roots are very much looking to push the envelope. Plus I think it has some great moments of understanding sexuality and post puberty situations. Me and my gf sat down and started talking during episodes like is that what happens, does that take place during a girl's first time. Yeah it weird and sometimes gross but u can learn alot from it.

    You and I had very similar experiences in middle and high school by the sound of things. I hated it. Everything was made into a sex joke, everyone bragged about losing their virginity at 14 or 15, everyone that didn't get in on the joke was gay, etc. Being ace and being surrounded by people that make everything about sex, especially during the Era of constant American Pie sequels, spinoffs and derivatives was a horrible time. And people wondered why I wasn't social.
    Y'know Netflix could have explored that too. Todd in Bojack is a very well written asexual character and he's not the butt of jokes because of it. It could have been interesting to have a character like that here too.

      It gets better. Usually people mellow out by Junior year from my experience. It's a weird feeling, I know. It's like you stagnated or skipped the sudden "lol sex is the funniest thing ever!" phase and just went straight to the point where the concept is fine to talk about and could be funny but making every joke about it is a grating experience.

    The kids probably don't sound like kids because the people who made the show don't want you to associate the characters as kids (even though that's exactly what they're depicted as). The way I see it, it's a cheap way to desensitize the viewers over the fact that they're watching minors obsessing over their sexual awakening.
    Yeah - sorry; not working; it's squicky as fuck.

      When the show ends it starts again. Like an infinite loop. I’m still trying to change channels, but it still doesn’t work. I heard sirens from the outside. Believe it or not this room has a tiny hole in the wall, but blocked off with bars. With the sirens illuminating the room, I can finally see a door. I try to open it but fail. It appears to be jammed. I hear people outside the door. They claim to be “SCP Containment Crew”. When they tried to open the door, they too fail. Even attempting to break the door down it still stands, and as well the walls. The bars also appear to be unbreakable. Even if they do break the bars, I’m too big to fit through the hole. The team then searched around the place for clues. For all I know, I’m not sure I’m in some ordinary house. Might as well as search around my room as well. Stay safe out there.

    I don't get the trend of making adult animation look disgusting as possible
    Like, Simpsons has abstract head and body designs but it all looks appealing. They don't look grotesque.
    The same goes to the Seth McFarlen cartoons and stuff like Bojack.
    But it's like they think that it's better to just not try at all incase it doesn't take off, then when it does they try and market it as "style"
    Like Rick and Morty Eye design is horrible and it's all rather bad, but it's "there style" and it's sooo artsy and stylish and stylised stylishly

    You asked if this was legal, Mr.Enter. I have an answer, actually.
    Yes and No. It varies somewhat by state, and it's something of a legal grey zone. In other words: Netflix is all but asking to get investigated by the FBI over this one, yeah, it would invite that level of "fuck you." if somebody chose to press the issue.
    TL;DR: It's Russian roulette with a .44 magnum, and 3 of the chambers loaded. Coin toss, either nobody will give a shit, or everybody on the show will get busted and end up in the special cellblock.

      At the federal level this could be legal since it is an artistic depiction with "artistic merit." There is leeway based on "community standards of artistic merit" for non-real images in US law. Now additional state laws could make things quite a bit muddier.

      My thing is that the show has to at least SEEM interesting at the beginning. It depends on how long 'later' is for me. Steven Universe won me over by episode 15. Adventure Time didn't really win me over that much until Mortal Folly and Mortal Recoil. MLP:FiM had me hooked on the literal first episode I watched, which happened to be Return of Harmony (Goddamn, what an introduction, am I right?). It just depends. Mainly, I'll stick around as long as the show itself isn't utter garbage up until that 'gets better' point.

    I never did relate to the irresponsible, hedonistic lifestyle that the media always seems to attribute to teenagers. Even around that age when some of my peers made reckless life choices, I could never really understand why they did these things. Maybe it's the way I was raised, maybe it's the set of values I uphold, the standards I hold myself up to, the people I surrounded myself with, maybe it's just the way I am, or it maybe it's all of the above. I don't know.
    And I still unironically listen to Simple Plan's first two albums, lol.

      Victor Cardena Where did I imply that I'm special? Where did I pass judgement on anyone? All I said was that I didn't relate to the way the media portrays teenagers and that I didn't understand why some people acted that way, and then provided possible reasons why. Don't misinterpret this into me trying to stroke my ego and flaunt how "virtuous" I may or may not be. I'm not so arrogant as to assume that I'm better than anyone else.

      I feel you. I never really acted like a teenager since I was focused on school rather than boys. I never really went through that rebellious stage in my life because I never had a need to rebel against my parents or my school since my life was and is very great. I had loving parents, had lost of friends, was never bullied, and got good grades. Everyone experiences teenage life different, so it all a matter of perspective.

    • @VictorCardena3
      @VictorCardena3 7 лет назад +6

      ADT116 Well the way you were expressing your thoughts on your own teenage hood made it seem like you think you were doing it better than the others around you. The fact is we all have thoughts and reasons. Sometimes we just like to let it go for the memories. If I was to say no to a lot of things because I let rational thought get in the way I wouldn’t have A LOT of crazy stories to tell today. If I truly think however, something will definitely go bad for me, I won’t do it of course. Eh. Well sorry if that’s not what you were doing. It just seemed like it.

    Its not like the issue of kids going through puberty and discovering sexuality can't be done at all. Tina from Bob's Burgers is a great example of how to do that well without it coming across as creepy, pedophilic, or immoral. I think where Big Mouth fails is in:
    a) Going over the top to be edgy, adult, gross, profane, and offensive (as if that shit is funny in and of itself) and...
    b) Making it's characters ENTIRELY DEFINED by their sexual confusion and/or the fact that they're going through puberty. Tina Belcher has other personality traits outside of being boy-crazy and having weird kinks. The kids in Big Mouth just run around talking about their genitals like they're a bunch of little Amy Schumers. It's off-putting, it's gross, and, most importantly, it stops being funny VERY fast

      Spoke like someone who really didn't watch the show.
      I watched the show and I can tell you a lot about each character.
      Nick for instance isn't defined at all by his sexuality. He is defined by his LACK of sexuality because he's not gone through puberty. Besides this he feels awkward for having such open parents about sexuality (and his parents are the ONLY ONES to be open about sexuality) but is just a normal kid. He emulates what others expect from him for approval but in the end he'd do anything and any sacrifice for his best friend Andrew. The CLIMAX of the season is about him sacrificing his innocence in name of his friendship with Andrew and then Andrew crashing back into reality and keeping Nick from doing it.
      Andrew is a smart, dorky boy who is going through a very rough puberty. He likes videogames and doesn't relate with his parents because his dad is an oaf and his mother is an ambitionless housewife. He is obviously way above his grade, but he doesn't mind sacrificing his As to get Bs with his best friend. He is socially inept while Nick is a little bit more rounded, so he leans on Nick for maturity and social cues even though Nick is presumably younger than him.
      Jessi is a normal, slightly tomboyish girl who got into Andrew's and Nick's circle while they were normal kids. She's sarcastic and has a sharp wit that she feels few appreciate. She's actually nice and is the only girl in school to not make fun of Missy until she was peer pressured into it. And she's seeing her world crumble because she loves both her mother and her dad but both are getting separated because of her mother, and she feels it is all her mother's fault because she's not mature enough to notice her father's failings. She is pretty much Daria, if Daria was going through puberty instead of already had survived it.
      Missy is the repressed kid whose parents smothered her with a controlling environment. They gave her free access to ALL the information she wanted, whether she wanted or not, and made her a bit weird because she doesn't know what is socially acceptable or not, which is the reason she doesn't see anything wrong with Andrew and falls for him. Her parents are liberal nuts who unwittingly made her this repressed kid by caring for her too much, with a very strict diet and schedule. The most surprising thing about her is that she goes to school at all, parents like hers would usually homeschool her. She is also ahead of her grade but is very socially awkward, to the point she doesn't understand that only a very select cadre of nerds would care about the middle bronze age.
      Jay is a kid in a broken home. The show uses his situation for comedic effect, but doesn't puss out and pretend it is all just a joke. The awfulness of his family has real consequences for him. He is emotionally scarred and starved for not being allowed to show emotion to his family. He sees in Nick's awkward family and over-sharing parents the perfect, loving family he doesn't have, and one that would appreciate his passion for prestidigitation instead crushing his dreams. He is a sackful of hormones but it is all talk, as being kissed by Jessi is not considered enough. NOT because he wants to press into sex, but because he wants a deeper emotional connection than that.
      And that's what the show is ultimately about. How the emotional connection of these teens is what drives them. Nick starts dating Jessi because he genuinely likes her and in both their inexperiences they believe this is all it takes, you like someone of the opposite sex so you automatically has to date them. Then they find out the pressure of a relationship is getting in the way of their friendship and end it because they're not really into one another that way.
      Then Andrew starts dating Missy because they're both really compatible. She's been hinting that she likes him from the start and he is a wreck, but they work as a couple. Then it gets too real and they break off leaving Andrew lovesick while Missy feels responsible for leading him on.
      Finally, Jay and Jessi get together because they are kindred spirits. Jay comes from a broken home that has always been depressingly broken, while Jessi's home is in the process of falling apart and just now she saw the cracks.
      And, finally, this is important, ALL THEY DO IS KISS. They never have sex. They have awkward teenage sexual frustration moments and fantasies, but it is never actual sex. And considering how many clueless teenage moms I know, who had sex because of their hormones and because they had no idea of what the hell they were doing, this show is tame. If you pretend sex doesn't exist to your kids EVEN after they reach puberty, all you're doing is begging for a teenage mom in your life.

    Even though I'm heterosexual, I was never sex obsessed and I'm totally with you on shows like this. It's just pure disgust and it's glorifying the mindset that make High School torturous for people like us(I also have Aspergers).
    Another problem with sex centered adult cartoons is they have an immature attitude when it comes to sex. That's the big reason why I hated Sausage Party, it's general immaturity and the fact that it tried to cover subjects that were done better in more mature books, movies and TV shows.

    • @lulucalliope713
      @lulucalliope713 7 лет назад +11

      Oh, my god, I'm EXACTLY like you: heterosexual, Aspergers, and uncomfortable with the things that are sex-obsessed. And it doesn't have to be an adult cartoon like Big Mouth or an adult animated movie like Sausage Party. It's like the writers don't know that being an adult is more about wanting or having sex, so they fill everything with sex because they think they're appealing to adults everywhere.

    • @TheSameYellowToy
      @TheSameYellowToy 7 лет назад +5

      Lulu Calliope I'm a bisexual Aspie who was pretty sex-obsessed as a teen, (still am) and even I feel uncomfortable with how sexuality is often portrayed so immaturely in the media, especially animation. It often reminds me of what a middle schooler who just discovered porn would animate, rather than an actual adult who actually has an ounce of maturity or has actually had sex.

      @KeybladeMasterAndy 7 лет назад

      I'm a hetero (possibly bi) Aspie, and, though I haven't seen the show yet, I feel oddly compelled to disagree. Though I'm relatively comfortable with sexuality in general and am not as easy to offend as I used to be, so I'm fairly confident I won't get a strong reaction from this show.

    I like Rick and Morty despite it going against my preferences.
    It's disgusting at times and basically all characters are assholes.
    The reason it works is because it has a story to tell, a story which needs to be disgusting.
    It doesn't shove extreme things in your face and ask you to somehow think it's cool.
    It's just their life. And life is cruel at times. Life is disgusting at times.
    So if anything, i'll give Big Mouth credit for actually talking about the thing everyone goes through but everyone wants to hide.
    Puberty is and will always be a hard time in life, but let's not make it harder by implicitly saying we should be ashamed of it.

    • @KnakuanaRka
      @KnakuanaRka 5 лет назад +8

      Yeah, shows like Rick and Monty or South Park aren’t disgusting just for the heck of it; they have stories to tell and points to make. Big Mouth seems to be trying to tell us about how we should approach and remember our teenage years and sexual awakening, but it tries to do so with an extreme idea of teenage sexuality which most people won’t relate to, resulting in it feeling like pure shock factor.

It's not like Regular show or something like Stand by me, where they're coming of age stories dealing with getting older and finding yourself while dealing with the trauma of letting go of the past, this show is an exercise in reminding you of the hormonal nightmares of puberty. Even with a sexual awakening that happened during puberty I'd rather not watch a show about other kids experiencing puberty
    At least not to THIS degree
    But thats just me
    What goes on with other people is kind of their business
    Even if I can or cant relate, having a show as graphic as this one is just...hard to look at....heck its hard to even think about
    I watched the trailer and they straight up showed a girl talking to her genitals
    I wouldn't complain except the actually SHOWED the genitals talking back
    After watching this I honestly wouldn't want to see hear or think about anything sexual for a long while
    I'm not asexual dont get me wrong

  • @CryptidMom
    @CryptidMom 6 лет назад +37

    The show made me VERY uncomfortable, but I watched it on the recommendation of my two college-age guy friends. The only part of the show I really enjoy are the monsters themselves, and how just gross and hideous and (in the case of the Monstress, I'll say cause I am a chick), sometimes terrifyingly accurate as to how nonsensical and over-the-top hormones can make you think. If it were about college-age kids, it'd be much less uncomfortable and just as fitting for the Monsters to be there. Maybe have an intro scene for each of them that's a flashback, and just as they are in the show currently. But the fact that it's 12-13 year olds.... well. Makes me pretty shy about it.
    I do know apparently at the end the Hormone Monster (Maurice) says something to the two boys about making their experiences a show later on and Nick asks if that would basically be child pornography, to which Maurice says something like "Oh god I hope not. Hmmm maybe you could get away with it if it was animated?" That sums it all up there.

    • @CryptidMom
      @CryptidMom 6 лет назад +1

      You don't honestly see child porn and effectively exhibitionism of child-aged characters to be comparable in nature? They literally say it in the last episode that it's basically child porn, but you can maybe get away with it if it's animated.

    • @zeex9338
      @zeex9338 6 лет назад +4

      Why do people think to take that seriously? They're making fun of people like you who keep saying this show has that. They aren't admitting to showing child porn nor sexualization of children. They're poking fun at themselves because idiots keep saying there's child porn and sexualization in the show when there isn't. And then people bring up "well you see the one teenager's dick" Yeah? And? A dick isn't sexual by nature, it's a natural human organ and people have to grow up and understand that.

    • @zeex9338
      @zeex9338 6 лет назад +3

      !2-14 year olds, point being that this shit happens and it's puberty. There's weird kids out there, kids who look at porn all day, and kids who don't start puberty until a little later. All these things happen at this age, idfk what you want from here. They're making fun and being informative about puberty.

    Man what is it with adult cartoons and their obsession with making people as ugly as possible? Just because you want to make your cartoon for adults doesn't mean we want to look at characters that make Universal Horror Nights actors look like Project Runway models. You can have a mature cartoon and still have good-looking characters. Hell, just look up Ralph Bekshi! He exclusively made animated films aimed for adults and his characters look like something from old WB cartoons!

      How to make a modern 'adult' cartoon: take the worst art style you can find on Deviantart. Do not simply avoid characterization, make certain you employ the technique of NEGATIVE characterization, thus creating characters who achieve less than uni-dimensionality. Add as much poorly-written sex humor as you can, including animals and children in the mix as often as you can shove it in there. Make fun of Christianity, since they don't suicide bomb you for offending them. Then have a bunch of hacks declare you 'edgy' and 'pushing boundaries', wheh in fact you're merely pandering to the lowest common denominator of millennials who are too stupid to know garbage when they see it because they've been told how brilliant they are despite failing at everything.

    When I was a teenager, I had to claim that I was lesbian to stop boys from flirting with me since I didn't know about Asexuality at that point, I was warned by the other girls that I would get bullied for it but I decided that I'd prefer that to wolf whistles and constantly being made to feel uncomfortable by boys bothering me, and it did work. Growing up Asexual is hard, because you have all you school mates commenting about sex or adults expecting certain behaviour, while you're just left feeling confused, because not a lot of people know about Asexuality or care to explain it.

      Boys didn’t like me. I had it good. I liked a few people, but it was mostly because they were really nice to me. The thought of having sex never occurred to me until around a year into my first real relationship, when my friends kept insisting that we must’ve fucked by then, not believing that anyone could go more than a few months without fucking. I was sixteen at this time, so it’s pretty obvious that something was different. Jokes on my high school friends though, because I didn’t have sex until four years after that and I haven’t had it since.

She is not currently in any relationship, and while she is okay with talking about it, she is really easy to tease when people ask her out since she doesn't really know how to feel or respond. Plus, she is a really nice and fun person. It's just interesting to see how she reacts to different situations and howher view on them is different than ours.

    Great video! I'm glad you went in such depth instead of going "EWWWW, PEOPLE HAVING SEX!"
    I tried to go into this show and I just couldn't. This show really makes me uncomfortable as much when I took sex-ed class. That and I'm asexual. As an asexual myself, it's incredibly hard to relate to this show due to the nature of the show and the person of whom I am. I'm usually never bothered with two character having sex with each other in shows like South Park or Bojack Horseman, but a show like Big Mouth is truly unique in its own way. In that, it's a show centered around sex. Sex is natural. A lot find it be exciting. I find it to be unappealing and gross. But that's life, y'know. When I was in middle school and high school. We, of course, had to take a sex-ed class and I would be a liar if I said I felt comfortable, and if that is what the show was trying to accomplished, then I have to give the show a lot of credit, it did a fantastic job at doing that. Hearing terms like penis, vagina, vulva, and all these kinds of stuff can be extremely overwhelming for little 12-year old me. As the years go by, I found the idea of sex to be not that important in my life. Not only that, but I don't feel attracted towards either men or women. That is when I made the conclusion that I am an asexual.

      The reasons it doesn't count as child porn:
      1. No children were involved nor exploited

If teens these days ARE like this... then there's a generational problem here and a severe lack of impulse control, because very few behaved this way in my public school of nearly 700 kids in the early 90's.

    Hearing stories about asexuals being made fun of and belittled is jarring to me. I think I'm asexual myself, I'm not fully sure, but my peers never belittled me for my sexuality or asexuality just because they didn't care. And generally, it wasn't in acceptance, but just because they couldn't be bothered to. So hearing stories like really ticks me off as I don't understand how people can be that mean. I'm so sorry that you had to go through that.

      Yeah, I Like style of Rick and Morty, and BoJack HorseMan to me they're pretty good... Who I Am Kidding? Compared to The Nutshack, Mr. Pickles, or any other Bad Adult Cartoon, EVERY ANIMATION IS GOLD. (What I'm found funny is that sometimes, searching RUclips, I Found videos that are better than any of this "Animations". Example? Search for the animation called "Majora's Mask - Terrible Fate" then look at any other Animation. The Diffrence. Wow.)

      I Haven't See it (Mostly 'Cause I didn't watch the original show yet.) But I probobly watch this season. What's more interesting is... I like Gregory Horror show. The Anime with animation that lot of people would say it's bad and I don't like shows like Family Guy... that has animation that in theory is better than GHS... Is that bad?

    Am I the only one who didn't have an awkward puberty in the slightest? I seem to be in some kind of minority for looking back on those years as the best in my life so far as opposed to some form of nuclear garbage fire that should be avoided at all costs. I had good friends, few responsibilities, plenty of free time, big ambitions, enough talent that classes were never much of an issue, and I never really faced anything along the lines of serious acne, or braces, or a shittily-done first experience with drugs, or other dumb teenager-related problems. Discovering my sexuality was a pretty great time, all things considered, and while I did do my fair share of dumb things, I always managed to ride the fine line of earning the respect of both my classmates and the staff. All this while doing relatively little work, which would later come back to haunt me, but at the time I was quite proud of my incredible talent for dodging what little responsibility I did have. Furthermore, after then, most of my friends moved away or became preoccupied with college. The world became a lonelier place. My metabolism slowed down, my parents' relationship finally crumbled, I was no longer sure what exactly to do with myself, had very little motivation or work ethic, and to this day I've never been in a relationship. Plus the political and online worlds seem to have degraded quite a lot since then. It was just a much simpler time overall, and to be honest I'd give quite a bit to be able to relive it. My dad used to tell me they'd be the best years of my life, but of course I never believed him until they were over. Go figure, I guess. You don't know what you have until you lose it at least once.

      I agree so much with this comment. Its almost literally me O_o.
      My teen years were not filled with problems (Not those kind of problems, anyway) and it was overall quite calm and I wish to go back to these days... I had none of this acne, drug adiction, etc... It was... basically the same as I am right now. Younger, obviously, but I mean, not that much changed.

      Yeah, I know what you mean. My teenage years were filled with a whole heap of problems, but a lot of those problems were out of my control (Being of a poor household, constantly stressed parents, bitchy sisters, etc). Otherwise, it was pretty great. I had a lot of good friends who stuck by me in my harder hours, a steadily improving home situation and very little sexual frustration despite still being a virgin. I found my real passion in life (books! who knew?), surpassed my insecurities and never once did I do any drinking, smoking or drugs, nor do I want to.

Hardly had any friends all because they were all sexually active or overly trying to be and called me gay, while still trying to figure myself out. And even though I DID know how good masturbation was/still is. It was still a trash time.

Just stayed at home and played games.
