I suppose they could go with the original plot (or something close to it), but in the end of most versions all the birds get eaten by a fox... ... ...still a better feel-good story then Chicken Little (2005)
They cancelled Gigantic to make live action Fantasia and sequels to... Wreck-it Ralph and... Frozen? That's it, I'm getting the fuck outta here. (Also, I thought Gigantic was gonna be Gulliver's Travels. How is _that_ not public domain? It predates _maps of Australia's east coast_!
My most hated cartoon cliche is every show have an idiot father like Homer Simpson, Peter Griffin, Randy Marsh, Timmy Turner's Dad, Hugh Neutron, Stan Smith and etc.
I'd argue Randy Marsh is one of the ones that actually manages to get it right, but that's just my opinion. Other than that though, couldn't agree with you more.
I dont mind it when South Park does it with Randy, other fathers are shown to be somewhat good (ignoring season 20-21) parents. With Randy it comes off as more of a "Randy is an Idiot" than "all of these kids fathers are idiots"
I find it passable in Fantastic Mr. Fox because it was the tone throughout. There were multiple occasions during the movie where several characters just started dancing for no reason.
*Fairly OddParents In: Channel Chasers* did basically that. All it takes is for you to use the worst clichés as deliberate satire, while having a genuinely good story to drive the whole film.
I have an idea for a story I would like to suggest that you could possibly somehow miraculously execute well as the story could be about a dumbass dad and a nagging mom as your main character’s with the dumbass dad being a stupid dog and the nagging mom being a snooty cat and a butt monkey who first met each other when they were in high school with the mom as child constantly picking on, bullying, and harassing the dad when he two was also a child and has been doing all that because she like likes him and at some point overtime they would eventually fall in love with each other and get married and as the years go by they are now currently going through a disfunctional marriage with the mom living a miserable life of torture and hell while the dad just sleeps on the couch watching sports, action movies and manly things on tv and at some point for reasons I don’t know the husband and wife would switch bodies as the two would then have to live each others lives while learning about how gender role stereotypical each of their lives are. And that’s all I got so far!
"Animation is a medium" - Thank God someone finally said it. I'm so fed up with all this cliches about animation (western and eastern) and it all comes down to the misunderstanding that animation is a genre with certain thematic implications or a set target audience. For example, saying "animation is fp0 kids" is like saying "movies are for kids", "books are for kids" etc.
The western animation medium used to be as rich in style and genres as the eastern market is However Disney and Warner Brothers started buying up all the smaller animation studios sometime during the late 80s early 90s, and redirected the entire medium towards a more family friendly market.

"Bojack Horseman" and "Final Space" are adult-animated shows that aren't entirely comedic. They're both adult-animated dramas with comedic elements.
Tyler Baraby sorry, a year late. But the twist of words helps with understanding, mostly. The emoji movie is awful, but it's not something that i'd call a special type of bad. It just has every cliche boring thing in the book. So the shift helps clarify that.
I hate the dance party ending too. However, I'll forgive Zootopia, since it was more of a backdrop for the credits, and the film had already had a solid ending beforehand. Plus, it was fun to see how all of those characters with wildly different designs danced in super unique ways.
TheHarlequinHatter the Zootopia one also kind of took place outside the story. It was more like a standalone animation just using the character models, and it's pretty typical to run a song over the credits anyway
I think the only other DPE that worked was the one at the end of Toy Stories 2/3 because they earned the idea of a dance party due to the nature of the plot. The others seem just incredibly forced and tacked on because "fuck it, we need an ending and we haven't seen Gene/Meh/Jailbreak's boppin' dance moves yet and the animators got bored with the movie."
is an anime, and thus out of the equation :P. Also, have to agree with the OP. I have no idea why mr. enter doesn't, and it'd be swell to get an answer to that.
Tbh, it's not so much that Rocko himself or the show is "edgy" and more that it portrays adult life in a brutally honest manner, presenting it in a decidedly unglamorous and unglorified light. I mean think about it: The core premise of the show is that a twenty-something year old guy is just getting used to life on his own, and he's learning that being an independent adult isn't all fun and games. It can be rewarding, yes, but the adult world isn't gonna just _hand you_ those rewards. You have to work at it. -Unless you were born rich of course.-
CJCroen1393 that's actually a great point about Rocko. It also teaches a good lesson of having friends to overcome trials as well(Heffer and Filburt for example). P.S. Are you looking forward to the revival with Static Cling
"it's so obnoxious hearing about adulthood being literal hell and having nothing good come out of it." Yeah, isn't it great that that's _not what I said at all?_
*The show is about contemporary American ghetto culture. I'd say the PJs (which, granted, I haven't seen in over a decade) is more about general blacks...
5:30 This is why I LOVE the ending of Captain Underpants, it ends in such an epic way just like all the books do with Harold screaming "HERE WE GO AGAAAAAIN" and then you see their silhouettes on the moon wile captain underpants screams his last "TRA-LA-LAAAAAA" and the credits roll
An "adult" version of Courage the Cowardly Dog could really capitalize on Courage's already somber themes in addition to the lightheartedness and comedy. I love that idea.
I’m just generally so sick and tired of Disney remaking all of their animated movies. I’m extremely angry and upset that my favorite film of all time is getting a totally unnecessary live-action remake. The original Lion King is a timeless, animated, masterpiece and one of the greatest films of all time. Everything in the 1994 film was perfect as it could be and it still continues to be loved to this day by fans and other people out there. There are no humans in this movie, so it’s not even going to be live-action, but rather photorealism CGI??? It absolutely disgusts me knowing that in about 2 years, whenever I talk about my favorite film, I’m gonna have to refer to it not only by its title, but by either saying “The 1994 one” or “the animated film.” 😡 I don’t support Disney doing all of these live-action remakes of their classic animated films and I don’t want to give money to this. To me, it feels like the remakes have become the new “direct to video sequels” trend Disney’s doing. 😒
Some of the live actions movies have been fine/competent, but I have not seen one that offered me anything that the original film did not. The closest I've seen to a LA adaptation of a Disney film that recaptures the spirit and charm is the Aladdin Broadway show, and that's because the changes they made in service to the format also worked with the vault material they adapted, and they let characters like Aladdin, the Genie, Jafar (though it helps that he was the same actor as the original film), the Sultan, etc. take liberties with the characters to feel natural rather than force a change onto the story or stringently adhere to the existing version.
I know how you feel man, it allmost feels like disney is ashamed of it's 2D animated past and I really don't get why. As a lover of animation I can say, these are timeless classics that also became these classics thanx to their wonderfull oustanding animation. Even in disneys not so good movies, the animation is still freakin amazing, so I really don't get why disney wants to deny what made them so great to begin with. Whoever came up with this live action remake this is certainly on my "people I need to punch" list.
papershadow69 I actually have seen The Lion King on broadway for my 15th birthday over 6 years ago and it was spectacular. Really, a lot of the Disney broadway shows are the “live action” versions of the movies lol. In addition, I also saw the original movie in the theaters in 2011 and I had to take that two week opportunity because I didn’t get to see it back then since I wasn’t born until 1996. That experience was also great seeing it with so many people and I was silently mouthing the iconic lines and songs since I’ve memorized the first (and second film) by heart. I do hope to see Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast on Broadway someday.
Honestly, it wouldn’t bother me if it had been the movies were ones that weren’t initially popular. For example, a live action version of Disney’s Atlantis or Treasure Planet. The concept itself isn’t bad, it’s just that it’s kinda unnecessary for the ones that are already well known and popular.
That seems to be a very common mistake; whenever Spielberg is the producer of something, people mistakenly refer to him as the director of it, because directing movies is what he's best known for.
Oliver Hayhoe I’m cringing at the fact that he said that Steven Spielberg directed Back to the Future. But it doesn’t surprise me the least bit. Nobody ever gives Robert Zemeckis ANY credit. Despite the fact that he’s made a LOT of fantastic films and has influenced Hollywood over and over again, nobody ever recognizes his name. It’s like what Sean Myster said, when people see movies with Steven Spielberg’s name on it, they automatically assume he directed the film, regardless of if he actually directed it or not. And as much as I love Steven Spielberg, that shit fucking pisses me off to no end. ESPECIALLY when this happens to movies that Robert Zemeckis directed. Nobody EVER gives Robert Zemeckis credit. Even Michael Bay, one of the biggest douchebags AND one of the worst directors in Hollywood HISTORY, gets more credit than freaking Robert Zemeckis. I’m dead serious. I once made a poll on a Teenager Community on Google Plus on who people think is better, Robert Zemeckis or Michael Bay. And Michael Bay got WAY more votes in a landslide. The fact that people will recognize Michael Bay’s name considering that most of Michael Bay’s films that he either directed and/or produced has made loads of money despite being literally the same exact bullcrap while people have no clue who Robert Zemeckis is considering that his last 2 Films he directed have bombed in the box office despite that he actually put effort into the films disgusts me to hell and back. People are so goddamn retarded nowadays.
With Disney's old movies, they had style. That art style is one reason why the movies are loved. The Lion King style is still the most famous way to draw lions. That is why Disney was so unique. Each movie had it's own art style that fit the setting. The live action remakes remove any original style the originals had. Why the hell would I want to watch a live action Lion King with realistic lions when I can just watch the original with it's unique style that helped lighten the movie, since it is an interpretation of a relatively dark Shakespearean play.
Live action movies can have interesting, distinctive visual styles too, if their directors actually give a flying fuck. Watch the original *Evil Dead,* then watch *Kill Bill.* Those movies don't look even *remotely* alike. The only reason all the big studio movies now look the same is because the guys directing them have absolutely no passion or inspiration besides money.
Also, live action remakes of cartoons that aren't just Disney movies are still a thing. On television instead of cinema and they're getting worse (Fate the Winx Saga, Powerpuff).
there is one cliché I particulary LOATHE on every single appearance, be it a good or bad movie, I just can't stand the "Liar review", which the Nostalgia Critic mentioned as something he hates too. We've seen it a lot, such as Sing, Chicken Run and Bug's life. That cliché when the protagonist spends most part of the movie sustaining a lie to achieve a goal, and the whole schtick is busted, and then we have to spend those long minutes having the hero moping, ostracized, everybody mad at him just for the plot to move without needing it. Perhaps the ONLY movie it never bothered me with it was Mulan, because this cliché was necessary for the plot and character development and actualy affected the finale in a very important way.
I kinda think both "Liar revealed" and "liar reveal" fit, since they are just different tenses of the same verb. Personaly I go for the later because this cliché starts when the liar IS revealed, but sure, the cliché lasts for several moments AFTER the liar is revealed as well. (minutes, hours, days, depends on the plot)
I consider both "Liar revealed" and "Liar reveal" a valid name for the cliché. Liar review, the reveal of a liar. The verb in a tense thats more neutral.
Warning! This is a rant: I how adults don't take cartoons seriously, so they just say "hey if cartoons are just stupid things for kids to watch we'll make a bunch of adult cartoons that are stupid things for adults to watch," without looking into the depth and complexities that some kids shows have. I know not all adult cartoons are bad, but I just wish that there would be more serious cartoons for an older demographic that aren't just comedy/drama. I find that there is more complexity in a show like steven universe than a lot of adult cartoons. (I am aware there are exceptions) I just wish that there would be more cartoons with a similar style to SU, Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, Ok KO, etc. Their aren't too many quality kids cartoons to begin with, and if they were for an older audience I feel like there could be even more masterpieces that are looked at through the ages.
Futurama has actually become more famous for sentimental drama than comedy since they did episodes like Luck of the Fryrish, Leela’s Homeworld, The Sting and especially Jurassic Bark.
To me personally it is emotionally troubling seeing the Butt Monkey being abused. To me the single worst offender is FamilyGuy, as I detest Peter Griffin for various reasons, but the emotional and physical abuse of Meg is one of them.
Hayley had to suffer through it as well on American Dad. When I saw her being handcuffed by her father in the first episode, I decided 'Fuck this shit!!' and changed the channel. -_- I still don't watch it (or any of Seth's nonsense) these days but I was lucky enough, one night, to switch to an action sequence where Hayley was beating up her father. Needless to say, it put a satisfied smile on my face...until the ending of the episode made me change the channel again in disgust. 9_9 I see nothing but animated humdrum in Seth's future.
it annoys when people say "its a cartoon calm down" to us that is not the point, we find the abuse of Meg not funny, its unfunny and pointless, lets hope to go back with her being a normal teenage girl and not a butt monkey character.
I love family guy but that always does bother me. Originally meg was an outcast because there was only one girl on set and she wasn’t part or writing. Seth and the other guys didn’t understand girls at all, but I don’t think this is a good reason to make meg so abused!
Queenofawesome25 It would be hilarious if it were number 5 or lower even though most of us are expecting it to be number 1 We'd just be sitting here going "wait if thats number 5 Then what could number 1 be????" xD
I feel Big Mouth is intentionally made unattractive due to its subject. It's a cartoon about kids going through puberty and discovering their sexuality, and if they were made too attractive, the accusations of it being child pornography would double. The unattractiveness of the show helps in not attracting kids, and helps de-sexualize the subjects they're discussing.
I'd have the same issue with that as I have with any criticism of sexuality being displayed anywhere. I am pretty sure normalisation is the only way to truly effect progress in abolishing neediness, stereotypes and selfish expectations. It's not pornography if all it does is acknowledge that children have sexual desires. Showing that, *and* showing that not all desires have to be acted upon, many actions have undesirable long-term consequences, and that adults have no right to take advantage of those circumstances and their power positions is much more impactful at shaping people's ethics than denying those circumstances (even if you do include the second half - because then it just becomes top-down sermons no one relates to themselves). Obviously I only mean "showing that" in the truthful dosis that makes sense. There is no need to cram these things in anywhere - they don't usually make for great plot anyways. But you don't need to create unrealistic abstracted versions of your story to avoid it being porn. If you worry that your story is porn, and you want to tell a real story, just tell a different story.
That didn't occur to me (I've never heard of this show), but also I can see how it might reinforce a feeling of awkwardness and discomfort with your appearance which seems to be more intense for kids in that age range. That is, if any of it was a deliberate stylistic choice rather than just lazy design.
Agreed. These two theme songs (and the Danny Phantom theme, although Enter's already mentioned it) are the only rap thene songs of a cartoon that is fine.
Raheem, I wouldn't necessarily say it's bias. For instance, he points out that one of the main problems with it is the people writing those theme songs are clearly BAD at hip hop. If he was acting out of sheer bias towards hip hop, he'd have said that it's impossible to make hip hop good or something like that. btw, even though I personally am not a fan of hip- hop, I can concede it can be good and can occasionally make a good theme song, such as Danny Phantom, Static Shock, or Samurai Jack.
I appreciate how blunt and honest you are in your videos. Some may say you’re overreacting or being too harsh, but I’d say brutal honesty is totally necessary with this sort of thing. It makes your videos so good, relatable and entertaining to me; speaking YOUR thoughts in a candid way that many would hold back on. Your videos are awesome, hope you keep up the good work~
I feel like Zootopia handled the "dance party ending" really well. The story had a conclusion, and basically, everyone was going to see a concert with a pop star from their world. It wasn't placed in randomly. It made sense where (as in the movie's timeline) and why they did the dance party scene at the end of Zootopia, at least to me.
It helps immensely that they established the pop star in the world already and made multiple characters fans. That makes it far more logical for them to go to a concert together at the end than just randomly deciding to dance to a catchy song.
And the scene where Judy enters Zootopia for the first time establishes that she listens to Gazelle on her music player, so it makes sense she'd go to a Gazelle concert with Nick later.
I'll say it again. Castlevania on Netflix. Both a cartoon aimed at adults that's fantasy/horror instead of comedy, and a video game adaptation to boot!
Netflix is just calling Castlevania anime, and it's not. Certainly it was inspired by it, but then again, a lot of the more creative cartoons nowadays take inspiration from it.
I'll tell you why rap themes don't work most of the times, it's because it doesn't fit the aesthetic of the show. It's just for a marketing gimmick or to seem "hip with the kids". But great shows like Samurai Champloo and The Boondocks have amazing openings, because hip hop is the aesthetic of those shows. Those two shows are filled with hip hop culture. So therefore it doesn't feel forced and out of context. Also the lyrics to those two shows I mentioned are deep and tell a story about the show you're about to watch. Hell, The Boondocks opening was literally inspired by Samurai Champloo. You can't say Danny Phantom was the only one that worked, and not even explain why....Danny Phantom's theme is fire, don't get me wrong, but I'm surprised that's the only one you like.
I agree, I loved the Boondocks theme, and it fit with the show's theme of exploring black issues and culture. So I'm not sure why he doesn't consider that a good theme. I liked the Yin Yang Yo theme too.
Raps can work if they fit the theme of the franchises. -JT Music's Cuphead Rap sounds like old timey music -Descendants' Be Our Guest has a high school acapella feel -Mario's rap has a video game feel.
Cliches are based on archetypes. Cliches are not bad. Many good movies and shiws are based on usual archetypes we all have in our mind and that help us to feel related to characters and situations. The difference between good and bad movies are not that the good ones lack of cliches, but that the good ones know how to use them properly. It's like to put salt to food. It's not something that makes food special than other dishes, but it's usually necessary, also you have to messure the quantity properly for the lunch to taste good. Oh man, I'm hungry now.
I agree for the most part but some things just aren't worth defending, specifically that adult cartoons have bad animation and are usually just comedies
Most (if not all) adult cartoons try too hard to be ..adult. They always have unnecessary violence, swearing, sexual references etc. usually because anything animated is correlated more with children. Its almost as if they're too insecure about being an animated show that they have to have all these shitty vulgar jokes and they have to have an unappealing art style to accentuate the fact that theres 'no kids allowed' or something (slayerrunes did a video about this if you want to watch, i find it super interesting and tbh it really be one of the most annoying animation cliches ruclips.net/video/U-7nA4SNDlY/видео.html )
I can't watch these 'adult' cartoons ((parents won't let me)) but from what I've heard it sounds right. I mean, if you look the "shock comedy" of those shows brutally beating and torturing people for laughs and compare that to something like Avatar/LoK, which is more serious? Wan Shi Tong: You think you're the first person to believe their war was justified?! Countless others before you have come here, seeking weapons, weaknesses or battle strategies! Aang: We had no choice! Please, we're just desperate to protect the people we love! Wan Shi Tong: And now I'm going to protect what I love. (Wan Shi Tong spreads his wings; the library starts to shake and flood with sand) Wan Shi Tong: I'm taking my knowledge back! No one will ever abuse it again! And then Korra's commentary on discrimination ,xenophobia, nationalism, political corruption..I think they're the more mature ones.
I can agree with this, to an extent. I can get behind "adult humor" to a degree, but it's when the humor claims to be adult and instead just runs on juvenile and gross-out gags that it becomes very bothersome to me. There's also the ongoing issue of adult cartoons lacking any real ongoing story to engage the viewers; I feel like one of the only Western shows to really even try lately is Bojack Horseman. It feels like a lot of these adult cartoons have a free pass to ignore the story writing process entirely just because they've instead written 5 million toilet, sex, and shock jokes that appeal to grown men and women with the minds of children. It's very frustrating to me.
11. I always found the dance party ending to be a big lipped alligator moment. Comes out of nowhere and makes for an awkward ending. 10. Yeah DP was the only one to do this right. I like rap, but DAMN these themes are trying too hard. 9. You pretty much took the words right out of my mouth with this one. Anime is making their characters look cuter, while western animation is making their characters look uglier. 8. Can i get an adult animated show that's a psychological show or drama? 7. I hate the fact that of all the disney movies i would want to see on live action PURELY FOR AESTHETIC PURPOSES, only one has gotten made, that being The Jungle Book. The little mermaid in live action would probably look pretty cool during the underwater shots, and Hunchback of Notre Dame would look spectacular with the high views and fire. But sadly those arent happening. 6. Oh jesus i hate this. As someone who was practically my family's butt monkey (hell my dad outright called me his butt monkey) this trope pisses me off to no end. Unless the butt monkey is a terrible person that the audience wants to see getting the shit kicked out of them as a form of karma, but that scenario is rare to see.
#9 is subjective as hell, but I do fully agree with his reasons for disliking shows like these. It's like adults can only feel like they're adults if they have to segregate their lifetime into parts by using media. You see this in the videogame industry too, where somehow people equate games with "realistic" and gritty graphics to "maturity", and it just reeks of someone looking for validation.
I'm probably going to receive shit for this but... Moana. *I want something new in my life but no! My guardian says I need to stay where I am. Did I mention I'm the leader's daughter/son? I decided to ignore my guardian and find my own way in the world with a goofy parnter. At the end, I will change everyone's mind by coming home, telling them "Hey! It's okay to leave your comfortable life! Out there is safe!"* A lot of animated movies uses this cliche, especially Moana.
GOD YES! That was what ruined How to Train Your Dragon and so many others for me. I'm just so sick of seeing it. It seems like it's just pandering to all the disenfranchised edgy kids and teenagers.
In the Dofus movie a kid disobeys their parent figure to get what he wants, he gets caught, tells his guardian he's not his real father, runs away, regrets it, comes back and admits he was in the wrong. ruclips.net/video/5nnJUXdSqlw/видео.html
Modern Disney as a whole is tanking in my view. Especially this whole CG thing, they can’t even make a decent 2D movie anymore, like Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Milan, etc. All of their movies also seem to be trending towards princess movies/small children oriented movies rather than movies just oriented at children as a whole. Live action remakes and unwanted sequels are a whole other thing.
Actually, Anime has suffered from some over used clichés too. - Male protagonist is ALWAYS a wimpy, weak loser who can never stand up for himself. And either becomes stronger by the END of the series or never at all. - Female love interest is ALWAYS short-tempered, violent and never stops yelling. And ONLY changes her ways near the END of the series instead of going through character development. And sometimes, she quickly goes back to her old violent ways. - Male protagonist is ALWAYS getting abused and beaten up by females, even for things that aren't his fault or for no reason at all, and it's ALWAYS gets played for comedy. Much more common in harem animes. - Male has a crush on a nicer, kinder, sweet female, but soon falls for the violent, abusive female and marries her instead of the nicer female.
Don't remind me, I have to gobble that crap up when I was a kid, watching anime in the afternoons. Fortuantely I didn't watch romance ones (except the ones aimed at girls, which doesn't have that), so it wasn't terrible, but that schtick was all the rage back in the day, with the harems being the worse offenders of all. Although, with the couple of expections, anime tend to have a juvenile humor, even the ones aimed at older people, so is not surprising witnessing dumb innuendos, sex jokes or cheap slapstick against a fodder (may be a male or a female or a pet). That's one of the reasons why I don't see them at all, despite being open to a valid show.
Anime's aimed at girls also often have girls abuse guys for comedy. And speaking of girls abusing boys, that got taken up to eleven in the later years. Pretty much 75% of anime's are nothing but girls abusing boys nowadays.
Anime is plagued with tropes, It they also tend to be more creative. While much of their comedy is recycled and trophy, much of the themes and stories of the shows are very original, at least in fantasy and scifi genres. Harem and slice of life anime’s are as generic as it gets.
You know the worst animated cliches I hate the most? The Liar Revealed, The Bullies, Useless Adults, and All the Other Reindeer. The Liar Revealed - Basically, the hero or villain made a huge lie about themselves and when they got exposed, instead of asking questions why they lie, they're immediately thrown under the bus and abandoned by everyone they care about or kicked out from their homes and treated them like dirt. This doesn't make the story in any shows work as this cliche stops the story to make the liar suffer because "lying will ruin your life". We know that, but can you NOT have other characters be out of character and ostracized the liars in questioned? The Bullies - Whether a jock, cheerleader, teacher, or even a nerd, this cliche was always used to give the audience a reason to feel bad for the main character who has to put up with these people everyday. I get it, bullying is also the worst thing to happen to people, but many cartoons lately made the bullies one-dimensional, since not all of them has character other than making their victims suffer because they can. Useless Adults - When a person seeks help from an authority and receives it, they know they can trust that adult whenever they have problems. But today's shows always have adults completely incompetent on their jobs or worst accused the victims of the situations of them causing trouble without getting the both sides of the story. That implies to the audience, especially the kids, to not ask help from authorities and take matters into their own hands, making things worst. All the Other Reindeer - Having the main character being disrespected and abused on a daily basis because of their past or because of their family's past doesn't work well with me. Because everyone acts like the MC is a disgusting criminal even though he done nothing bad or even met other people. Or because the MC is too different from others, so that MC is a freak of nature. It's pretty much saying that being different is a sin and it's your fault you're not normal to other people...
Dante Bell I remember Doug Walker doing a similar list like this several years ago called “Top 11 Worst Movie cliches” and he also mentioned the liar revealed and bully cliches. I also hate the misunderstanding, love triangles, greedy villains, and death fake outs. 🙄
Yeah, don't get me started with low blow humor like burping and farting and butt jokes...The shows who does these constantly has very low opinion to kids and anyone else watching it...
Dante Bell A lot of the clichés you mentioned are not recent I've seen them in tons of shows growing up and watching a lot of shows from the past (Talking mostly 80's - Now)
My most hated cliche in western animation is the designated hero cliche where the hero or mc does alot of unheroic things and is a total jerk to everyone yet we were supposed to root for him
I feel like Disney's best potential for good-quality remakes would be, ironically, some of their "flops". More accurately, movies like "The Black Cauldron" or "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" which I feel would've done better without Disney's "it has to be for children" mindset, and c ould clearly do better nowadays. Even if it had to be pg-13, it could still do so much more (or at least attempt more) than when BC had to "play it safe" in many respects.
I would actually like to see a version of the Little Nemo movie that's as crazy and surreal as the original comic strip (with no musical numbers and no kid-friendly comic relief characters.)
I'm planning on making several adult non-comedy cartoons. One's a dystopian future filled with experimental monsters, one's a group of inexperienced young researchers getting trapped in an alternate version of earth run by mermaid-like people, and the last is a slacker 18 year old finding an easy job at an theme park only to discover it's actually the host to the four horsemen of the apocalypse. I hope I can get these all made cause I think people would really like them.
I have similar plans! The only issue: My cartoon falls between the adult and teen demographics, and I don't know where it'd belong. It has some humour, with elements of mystery, sci-fi, action, and fantasy. I suppose it's akin to Adventure Time or Gravity Falls. Actually, the series storyline is entirely finished. I just need to add in the fine details.
I got a couple non-comedic adult cartoons as well. One is a grim and gritty, ultra violent noir style show about a detective. And the other I'll get back to you on it.
4:44 That's not the ending of Rio, that's somewhere in the middle. Also, Rio is as much about Brazilian musical culture as it is about birds learning to fly, so it's not only an intellectually dishonest example (it doesn't fit the criteria of being an ending), but it also is very much thematically integrated into the movie.
@@nakenmil I personally don't like Samba, so I found the constant singing and dancing obnoxious. But that's just me. I've always preferred things that are dark and emotional. Like Tokyo Ghoul.
Isn't the plot about how these two Spix Macaws(one of whom is apparently a socialized bird that cannot fly) are thought to be the last of their kind(the species is extinct in the wild) and are escaping poachers and are expected to bang and somehow repopulate the entire species out in the wild while there's literally only two of them..? I mean, you are as far as you know the last of your entire race and at risk of dying the way everyone else in your species has, why would you take any time for a dance party? Especially considering one cannot fly and thus cannot survive in the wild let alone be picked as a mate by a wild bird, considering...just like "we're the only ones of our species left, we're all constantly threatened by the reality that we could get kidnapped by humans and either smuggled or killed and you can't fly, let's boogie". I mean yes, in reality the circumstances are much better...there were more than 150 of the birds when they got counted 2 years ago and they'll be reintroduced in 2021, but considering the characters think they're the last two Spix, it seems odd.
I really get sick of the "Butt Monkey" trope, it just makes me angry seeing someone trying to live their lives and try to be happy. Only for something or someone, end up ruining it for them, all the trope does for me is remind me that grade school and high school sucked.
Number 9: Pretty much half the reason adults go watch "KID" cartoons. *Some form of violence, adult jokes, great characters, fucking amazing story, animations etc* Heh, kid cartoons.
Depends on the way you think. I personally see it as a good thing because if less effort was placed into kid shows, shows like Transformers: Prime, The Spectacular Spider-Man, etc wouldn't be the treasures they are today. Of course, it would be fantastic if adult shows received as much attention but it's hard to see a world of effort.
Hell even adult anime has more effort and more genres then these American "Adult cartoons." Rick and Morty and Futurama, and Bojack Horseman are the only good adult cartoons.
What about Bob's Burgers? It supposedly a adult cartoon, and you can tell. But most of the time, unlike most adult cartoons, it feels kinda family friendly? Like the occasional sex joke is in there, but no one is being overtly violent or making a shit joke for the sake of a shit joke.
Well, I respect your opinion, but its one of my favorites shows, along with Rick and Morty and Bojack Horseman. Just curious, what do you not like about it? Is it the animation? Do the jokes not land for you?
It's not the Cliché you pick/use, it's HOW you use it. What you do with it. If you pick something trite, use it in a DIFFERENT way. For example: Someone sneaks in to get some informative documents. How will you change it? Possible choice: Inside a box, in the back of a delivery truck. Source: "Brody's Ghost" by Mark Crilley.
the informative documents are informative, but only inform you as to how to make a kickass quiche. The documents that were stolen set off the owners of the documents they were trying to hide, and are used to up security.
I agree with you, let's say, you make a story about a knight that wants to save a princess from a dragon. Cliche as fuck BUT! The Knight first needs to prove his worth to save the princess, by completing a test that grants him access to the royal family's trust. In his quest he meets two swordsmen that aid him in his quest. When he slays the dragon, it is revealed that the dragon was put in there by other noble family to keep the princess as an hostage, and hired mercenaries to keep the princess from being released from the curse they put on her, so she cannot wake up until the true love kiss her. But what is true love? the knight, having retrieved the princess body from the tower and returned her to the castle, goes on his way, since he is no longer needed. Days later, he meets a mysterious girl that asks him for help, after helping her, they become friends and love start to flourish between them. One month later, the mysterious girl reveals that she is a vessel for the princess' soul, that wanted to meet him and thank him properly for risking his life in order to save a girl he didn't know. She gives the knight a letter with the princess' sign on it, and vanishes. The knight then, heads to the castle and shows the letter to the king, who, allow him to kiss his daughter to see if what was writen in the letter was real. If it fails, then the knight would be executed for disrespecting her body. The knight kisses the princess, and she wakes up, and they live happily ever after. (this was imagined in about five minutes, sorry for my bad english lol)
Theory: Adult cartoons have shitty animation because theyre less marketable and get less funding. Adult cartoons get t-shirts at most merch wise while kids shows get, figures, mcdonalds toys, advertising on everything the company can get it on, posters, hot topic shit, walmart brand toys, characters faces put on nearly everything and shitty flash games sometimes.
Okay, that theory about Disney running out of adaptation ideas because they fucked themselves up by their grip on the copyright laws is extremely interesting. I honestly never thought of that.
What exactly is Disney's policy on copyright? I've heard tales of how draconian and overreaching their methods are, but I've never seen a clear definition for the average layman (the official legal version doesn't count since it answers nothing).
I believe it's life of the creator plus 90 years, so basically, if Disney copyrights something, no one who's alive when it happens will live to be able to make public domain content out of it.
@@RM-cn8pw I know you're a disney exec, so this won't matter. However, Disney has spearheaded every campaign to increase the length of time that content remains under ownership. Coincidentally, these campaigns have occured when Walt Disney content (primarily mickey mouse) is about to become public domain under the old laws.
About $1 000 000 of budget, divided by 22 minutes, and about 20 seconds of dad noises, so divide that by 3... that dad noises clip costed approximately $15 000 to make. Jesus.
It's 3AM in the mornin', put my key in the door, bodies layin' all over the floor, I don't remember how they got there, But I guess I musta' killed 'em! Killed 'em!
Not to be the "Rick and Morty is so intellectual, you just dont understand!!" person, but I think Jerry is a deconstruction of the character you're talking about. Often he DOES deserve the abuse, and his reaction to that abuse is what builds his character. It's not abuse for abuse sake, its criticism of his character. and especially recently as he redeems himself that abuse is less and less harmful or more directly his fault. A lot of fans of Rick and Morty genuinely like Jerry as a character, and joke about how stupid he is in the way the character on the show do, but like, in a play-along sort of way. We're all having FUN at Jerry's abuse, because its done well. And Jerry and Beth aren't just thrown in for marketing reasons, they serve as important foils. Nothing about Rick and Mortys adventures would be anywhere near as interesting if they weren't so contrasted with a more boring reality. But to most people that enjoy the show the reality plot lines aren't actually boring because we care about the characters.
If a episode starts in a insane world and ends in an insane world it whould not be noticable if it gets weirder. If it starts in a normal world before building up to the insane world you have a place to compare against the weird stuff. The jerry and beth subplots are the normal world and the rick and morty subplots are the insane world.
The only cartoon (which comes to my mind at the moment) that actually pulled off a good love triangle story, in my opinion, was Disney's adaptation of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." The story is catalyzed by four men who become infatuated with the same girl (in the Disney film, it is three, since Phoebus and Pierre Gringoire are made into one composite character). The reason why I think that "love square" (or "love pentagon" in the book's case) works is because it actually serves an important purpose for the story's themes. Besides religion, prejudice, societal corruption, etc. other major themes are unrequited infatuations and how destructive it is to have warped notions of sexuality/romantic love. The story uses those relationships that Esmeralda has with the various men as an opportunity to deeply explore into elements like lust, jealousy, the Madonna/Whore complex, expressions of self-giving love through platonic vs. sexual relationships, friendship, misogyny, celibacy, the effects of embracing Puritanical mindsets or shallow debauchery devoid of love/respect/commitment, and how relationships are most healthy when both people see each other simply as human beings, without one demonizing/deifying/objectifying the other.
SupremeMarioGamer I also hate them too. I think movies like Twilight are what cemented my hatred for love triangles. Even for good shows that I love like the Legend of Korra, I hated when they included the triangle in the first season. Unless they are played up for laughs like in a sitcom and the triangle could create hilarious moments, I just generally cannot stand the pointless drama.
9. Putting no effort into the animation/visuals in adult animation. And that is one major reason why Hazbin Hotel is the only adult animation I like. That and most adult animated shows are too crass (Hazbin has its moments, but the crassness is not only limited to a few characters, but it's the result of character interactions rather than just "a crass joke for no reason").
"Hopefully in 2019 we can stop this Mickey Mouse Protection act shit" Dear Enter, I come to you from two years in the future. Guess what? It's worse than ever and there's no light at the end of the tunnel in sight.
Let’s not forget the ‘two best friends become lovers’ trope or everyone assuming any character on screen is gay or something even when it’s very unnecessary
I hate to be that guy--especially if someone already said this--but Spielberg didn't direct the Back To The Future films. Yes, he produced them, but those are all Robert Zemeckis's movies. But your point is a good one. Spielberg has a distinct style, but he's made fantasy, sci-fi, action, drama, suspense and thriller films.
I was thinking the exact same thing! I've watched so many animated films from Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, and WAG (Lego movie creators), and this film manages to rip off every single one of them! It takes a very special kind of low to achieve that level of incompetence!
I think the lack of quality adult animation is more due to South Park- people of course want to follow the leader, but they seem to willfully ignore the fact that South Park gets away with frankly horrific things BECAUSE of the crappy art style. South Park never would have survived as a live action show, and even if it had Family Guy-level animation I'd wager they'd be under far more scrutiny than they are. But trying to actually make somewhat intelligent satire and censor-tweaking jokes is too much effort when you can just make another Family Guy ripoff!
I just want to point out that movies which are based around a large cliche, aren't always bad. the bad part is when they do that and don't do something else that's way different. Zootopia, for example, is based around "You can do anything" and is a world of animals. the biggest cliche in the universe. Even with this, it's still a good movie because takes those cliches to level, and put a new spin on everything else. like how it points out: yeah, you can do anything, but it's not going to be easy, you'll have to work really hard, and things will go wrong, and not everything is going to work out perfectly, but you can work through it get past it. it also has a commentary on racism, which you may think is good or bad, but you have to agree that it does it pretty well, and points out many non child appropriate problems in a PG way. Sorry for such a long comment and if you read all the way through it please criticize my short essay, to help me do better next time. Also thanks for reading it
Unfortunately, the reason adult animation is always comedic is due to so many people believing that that's *all* it can be. As Roger Ebert put it - "Every time an animated film is successful, you have to read all over again about how animation isn't 'just for children' but 'for the whole family,' and 'even for adults going on their own.' No kidding!" As for an adult animated series that's a mystery - I'd recommend the anime series "Monster", though good luck finding it.
ironballs16 I’m not sure about the first part, but I agree that adult animation should really look to the variety in Japan. Why can’t America make its own Berserk or Death Note or Bleach?
@@Anteksanteri I'm not sure why that is an issue? Also consider the fact that it's a Japanese work, they use foreign languages in their titles like we do with Latin and shit :P
I'm a story driven person. I like watching things for the plot and character development, not to see the same shit and the same jokes in every episode, so I heavily agree with #8. That's honestly why I watch more anime than American cartoons (but a looooot of recent cartoons here are more story driven and I love that.) Now I can give you a list of tired anime cliches, the biggest ones being in romance/slice of life type shows.
Also I gotta comment on the "Danny Phantom is the only cartoon to do a good rap opening" because that's just a lie. A cartoon like The Boondocks wouldn't work with any other type of genre BUT rap/hip-hop. And just because it's not making new episodes doesn't mean that the animation still wasn't great for its time. I honestly forgot that show came out over 10 years ago. It doesn't feel that long. Plus that's one example that wasn't just a straight comedy.
I agree, although anime as a whole has its own problems. I don’t know what you are referring to though when you say recent western animation is becoming more story based, I can’t think of any story based American shows. To me they only seem to be getting much worse, much less story based and more episodic, with a few outliers such as the samurai jack reboot, rick and Morty, etc.
While Anime has far more variety in terms of genre, each genre is plagued by the exact same tropes and cliches, to the point that all animes pertinent to a certain genre feel like Carbon copies of each other, it is absolutely awful. There are exceptions of course, but they are just that, exceptions and the anime market is over saturated, no one enjoys digging trough garbage in order to find a gem. While Western animation has far less variety in terms of Genre's, they are no where near as formulaic as most anime. Sturgeon's law is present on both, however...
I mean, older cartoons like Teddy Ruxpin, Transformers, G.I Joe, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, Adventures of The Galaxy Rangers, Inhumanoids, Jem, ThunderCats (both versions) , DuckTales, and then later with shows such The Legend of Prince Valiant, Invasion America, Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders, X-Men, Spiderman, Iron Man, Fantastic Four, Incredible Hulk, Double Dragon, King Arthur and The Knights of Justice, Shadow Raiders, The Pirates of Dark Water, Conan the Adventurer, Exosquad, Phantom 2040, Beast Wars, Gargoyles, Reboot, Superman TAS, Silver Surfer, Batman Beyond, Xyber 9: New Dawn, Redwall, XMen Evolution, As Told By Ginger, TMNT (later 1987 series episodes and 2003 series), He-Man (both 1983 and 2002 versions), Jackie Chan Adventures, Static Shock, Justice League/Unlimited, Argai: The Prophecy, Chris Colorado, WITCH, Xiaolin Showdown, Danny Phantom, Codename Kids Next Door, Teen Titans, American Dragon (Season 2), Kim Possible (Season 4), Avatar: The Last Airbender, Transformers Animated, Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2003 and 2008 series)/Rebels, Ben 10 (OS and UAF), The Batman, Legion of Superheros, Total Drama, Speed Racer The Next Generation, Wolverine and The X-Men, Spectacular Spiderman, Iron Man: Armored Adventures have definite continuity and a story that moves forward. You would never understand future episodes without watching older ones.
There's still a lot of episoic shows on now such as Gumball Harvey Besks Pivkle n Peanut Teen Titans Go The Powerpuff Girls Reboot Ben 10 Cloudy Wacky Races The Tom and Jerry Show and more
Jack Casey I mean he's an okay youtuber. But I won't call him a "hard working" youtuber, youtubers such as nigahiga made 2,300 papercut outs for a youtube video! Mr enter has an editor that edits his cartoon reviews
S. Y. not to mention that the edits are extremely simplistic and minimum effort. I won’t say Mr. Enter isn’t a hardworking person (he mentioned many times that he’s working on a book and I don’t know how much of his time he puts into it) but if we’re just looking at his youtube channel, he rarely even works. Before this video, I had forgotten that I’m still subscribed to this channel.
Not leaving his room while other people film a sketch with other actors and props in a studio, which all is expensive. But hey, they invest least time about complaining about video taketowns.
To be fair with 8. we still have direct to dvd movies aimed for older audiences that are not comedies like the majority of DC animated flicks. As for 7. we did get one good live-action adaptation of a cartoon, George of the Jungle.
12:03 " every adult cartoon is a comedy " except for genndy tartakovsky's primal and mortal kombat legends scorpion's revenge and justice league dark apokilips now.
adult cartoons all being comedy is so annoying................. I've wanted to make an adult cartoon that was fully serious for a while but it would take forever without a good budget RIP
You know what I’ve noticed about The Polar Express? You know, the Animated Film that gets a lot of hate because it’s “creepy looking, cliched and a terrible adaptation”? It’s an animated film with none of these cliches. Literally none of them at all. There’s no dance party at the end because the film ends with the Hero Boy narrating as an old man telling the viewers that the bell he received from Santa Claus still rings for him, even as an old man, because he still believes, all the while the motion capture camera is focusing on the bell itself. There’s no terribly written parents because they’re barely in the film so they only have little purpose to the story, plus neither of the parents die because it wouldn’t make any sense in this exact film. There’s no butt monkey because The Polar Express is not only a comedy, the film has a variety of different genres; musical, Christmas, adventure and animated, so the film wouldn’t only focus on comedy if it isn’t just a comedy. There’s no fake out death because Robert Zemeckis, the director of this film, is a very smart filmmaker and storyteller and he knows it also wouldn’t make any sense because The Polar Express isn’t a type of film that would have those type of stakes. There’s no comic relief because there’s enough comedy that happens to many of the characters, whether it’s Smokey and Steamer trying to get the lightbulb back onto the train itself, the elves bringing back the train car that got loose and falling down from the contraption they were using topped off by the Hero Boy laughing at them, the Know-It All Kid failing at trying to take Billy on the big bag of Santa’s presents and rambling on how he’s trying to make sure he got every present on his list, the conductor getting angry at the Hero Boy for pulling an emergency cord, the Hero Girl getting annoyed with the Know-It All Kid with his knowledge about trains or the Hobo… well, just being himself. There’s no live action remake because, again, Robert Zemeckis is a brilliant filmmaker, and knows he wouldn’t want the films he made to be remade just to make a quick buck, because he doesn’t care about the money, just remember that Zemeckis himself has said that there will never be a Back to the Future Remake as long as he and his longtime collaborator Bob Gale are alive for this exact reason (which BTW Mr. Enter, Robert Zemeckis directed Back to the Future, not Steven Spielberg, IDC if this pointed out error has been beaten to death, this error drives me crazy as a diehard Zemeckis fan because he deserves better credit and more recognition as a filmmaker because he’s made consistently amazing films). There’s no fake breaking stereotypes because all of the characters in the film are well written, taking out the fact that most of the characters don’t have names, they have their own quirkiness, their own relatable and understandable feelings and motivations, they go through their own character development and most of them aren’t stereotypes (except for the Know-It All Kid and the 2 conductors, Smokey and Steamer, but the former character still has SOME depth and goes through his own character development and the latter 2 characters aren’t a big part of the film). There’s no twist villain because, well, there’s no villain at all, just realize that, an Animated Film for kids/families that has no villain in any way whatsoever, that is EXTREMELY rare in animated films PERIOD, I don’t think there’s any other animated film in history that has no villain at all (though, you can CMIIW if you want to). And of course, there’s none of the other cliches because this is an Animated FILM, for kids/families, not a show. Okay, The Polar Express DID get an IMAX 3D release, but it wasn’t until AFTER the film first came out in regular theaters in 2004, so it technically doesn’t count. So yeah, for a film that gets loads of hate for the exact same bullshit reasons, one of them being that it’s “cliched”, that said Film doesn’t use any of the cliches mentioned on the list because, in reality, The Polar Express is a fantastic film. It’s engaging, funny, clever, intense, smart, subtle, deep, creative, beautiful (both visually AND musically) and VERY faithful to the source material. Plus, there’s barely any of the “uncanny valley” bullshit in the film and literally NONE of it is creepy. The only character in the entire film that ever has any “dead eyes” is the conductor, and yet even then he doesn’t always have those “dead eyes”. So yeah, The Polar Express is a brilliant film. End of story.
Tim Burton's Alice was not far away enough from the Disney version and not close enough to the _original_ 1865 Alice. this is why everyone just hates it.
I didn't like it because of that scene of Johnny Depp dancing looked really stupid. It reminded me of that cheesy live action TV version of Alice in Wonderland that they did in the 80s. I also hated the costumes in the Burton version. Depp looked like he fell onto a pile of vomit in a run down Hot Topic.
If you liked super jail, then check out ballmastrz:9009, its a delightful parody of the anime genre and its made by the same people who made super jail.
In my opinion, Spongebobs animation is underrated. It ain't as good as some others, but it's got nice finesse, good designs, and recently smooth character animation along with HD.
I can't wait til Disney runs out of old animations to re-make in cheesy live-action remakes, and starts remaking those live-action movies into proper animations without all the weird self-aware jokes
There's nothing wrong with it if it fits the ending. In Shrek 1 and 2, they are celebrating their marriage after all. In a lot of other instances, it's not needed. Look how the Kung Fu Panda movies end. Even the 3rd one doesn't end in a dance; it ends with Po as a teacher spreading knowledge to all members of his land. If you can justify having a dance at the end, then it's fine. If you can't, then you really don't need to do it.
Matthew Mazzatto I dont want to justify anything,Im just saying that I like the ending dances. Its just an opinion.I dont care if they "should or shouldn't" be in there ,I just find most of them entertaining.
I'll stomach the Diseny remakes until they give us the Hunchback of Notre Dam in live action that is actually dark and gritty. Make the gargoyles firmly into a creation of Quasimodo's mind and cut their screen time but change nothing else. That would make it my favorite movie of all time.
I'd love it if they would make Frollo a little more like he is in the book. He started out rescuing Quasimodo (and not killing his mother) when he found him as a abandoned child, really cared for him and raised him like a son. And I'd want the live action movie to be different because else it would be unnecessary.
Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated attempted to be adult by framing every episode around movies and TV shows that only adults would know. I rather liked that, as well as some of the more mature themes covered in the story arc.
2018-2020s decade is changing that: Castlevania, Blood of Zeus, Harley Quinn, Young Justice season 3 and 4, Invincible are adult cartoons that aren't comedies.
Reminder that someday Disney will run out of animated movies and be left with no choice but to do a live-action remake of Chicken Little.
Hey, maybe they'll make it good the second time.
Doctor Eggnog You can’t really do much good with a movie about a little boy being neglected by his father and bullied by the entire town.
Does Chicken Little HAVE to be about that? Remember Disney changes a lot from the source material in general.
Well there are good dad characters that are idiots like Dexter's Dad and Richard from Gumball so they can get it right
I'd argue Randy Marsh is one of the ones that actually manages to get it right, but that's just my opinion.
Other than that though, couldn't agree with you more.
Bruno5705 - I think literally strangling your kid on a semi-regular basis disqualifies you from ever being considered a "good" parent.
I dont mind it when South Park does it with Randy, other fathers are shown to be somewhat good (ignoring season 20-21) parents. With Randy it comes off as more of a "Randy is an Idiot" than "all of these kids fathers are idiots"
That's probably gonna be in Part 2
In Zootopia and Rio’s defense, they did the dance party in the credits. Same went for Fantastic Mr Fox so at least it’s somewhat passable
I find it passable in Fantastic Mr. Fox because it was the tone throughout. There were multiple occasions during the movie where several characters just started dancing for no reason.
And in Zootopia it's a concert by Gazelle, who's heard before.
For Rio 1, it's actually halfway through, while in Rio 2 it was implied earlier on.
Rio had a lot to do with Samba as well so it’s even more justified
A dance party kinda made sense in Shrek because it was their wedding.
I found my new life goal: Make a movie with every cliché he hates and somehow make him like it XD
Does that include making it a comedy for adults and having bad animation ?
Now that you mention it yes!
The first season of Total Drama did it
"The point of Fantasia was to set animation to music"
Does that make Fantasia the world's first AMV?
Temporary Name f u c k, I don't know what to do with this knowledge now
I would say Steamboat Willie would be the first Disney AMV since the entire animation follows the tune that Mickey is whistling at the beginning.
Yes
Emperor Palpitoad technically it is. An animated music video.
Temporary Name that's probably steamboat willie as the first amv
wow I never realized how many movies have a dance party ending, probably hecause I forget about that part in movies
Same here, you don't at all think of it, so it just slips into your mind without you knowing.
I forgot too, dear god
Well the dance party ending is after all of the main events happened in the movie.
There’s a reason ADULT cartoons exist
nemengeholz yes
"The animation _GENRE_ " #bradbird
@@nuttiebun So true. It used to be for adults.
"the emoji movie is not everything wrong with cinema, everything wrong with cinema is in the emoji movie."
THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Luke Hqyes Indeed, that was a clever turn of phrase.
Please explain to me why that makes sense?
Now, if only it wasn't set to Shakira's godawful kermit voice, it would have been sort of fine.
Maridia Monroe MLP's dance ending also made sense to movie as well and it did add on more lore
Jack Garcia it wasn't really that bad
I agree with pretty much everything except one thing... the boondocks theme is fucking incredible
Agreed. Besides, considering the tone, themes, and subject matter of the show, was there anything they could have used other than rap/hip-hop?
ATHF's theme is badass too. Adult Swim seems to know what's up
*cough* samurai champloo
is an anime, and thus out of the equation :P.
Also, have to agree with the OP. I have no idea why mr. enter doesn't, and it'd be swell to get an answer to that.
agreed
"hey, you know who could replace Robin Williams as the genie? Will Smith!"
Man i wish I was joking.
In Will's defense, he didn't try to imitate Robin Williams, he made Genie his own character and I can respect that
"I get that the idea of being an adult is that the world is EDGY and UGLY!"
You know what cartoon did that concept right? Rocko's Modern Life.
Yes I am ^_^
you don't remember rocko that much, do you?
"it's so obnoxious hearing about adulthood being literal hell and having nothing good come out of it."
Yeah, isn't it great that that's _not what I said at all?_
Honestly, the Boondocks theme's pretty good. And it makes sense too, since the show's about contemporary African American culture.

Slashbash I commented the same thing. Boondocks did it pretty well and it makes sense.
*The show is about contemporary American ghetto culture.
I'd say the PJs (which, granted, I haven't seen in over a decade) is more about general blacks...
It even has nice use of rap BGM.

Not to mention that kickass Weird Al song played during the ending credits!
Kevin Petrak It actually fits because Wierd Al was referenced in the books a couple of times.
Well George says "Oh no" first. Then Harold says "Here we go again".
Why spoilers.
A shame The Emoji Movie made more money than that.
An "adult" version of Courage the Cowardly Dog could really capitalize on Courage's already somber themes in addition to the lightheartedness and comedy. I love that idea.
Actually, the budget of Family Guy goes to the orchestrated music. Which is the best thing about the show.
OddBall64 I don't like the show anymore, the songs are good

I’m just generally so sick and tired of Disney remaking all of their animated movies. I’m extremely angry and upset that my favorite film of all time is getting a totally unnecessary live-action remake. The original Lion King is a timeless, animated, masterpiece and one of the greatest films of all time. Everything in the 1994 film was perfect as it could be and it still continues to be loved to this day by fans and other people out there. There are no humans in this movie, so it’s not even going to be live-action, but rather photorealism CGI??? It absolutely disgusts me knowing that in about 2 years, whenever I talk about my favorite film, I’m gonna have to refer to it not only by its title, but by either saying “The 1994 one” or “the animated film.” 😡
I don’t support Disney doing all of these live-action remakes of their classic animated films and I don’t want to give money to this. To me, it feels like the remakes have become the new “direct to video sequels” trend Disney’s doing. 😒
some are actually good so forcing ur oponions on others
There are four shows with good rap themes:
Danny Phantom
The Boondocks
Kenan and Kel
The Fresh Prince of Bel Air
True but two of these aren’t cartoons and one the song wasn’t specifically made for that product that being boondocks

Steven Spielberg didn't direct Back To The Future. That was Robert Zemeckis.
Oliver Hayhoe I'm glad I'm not the only one who caught this though I do wish I scrolled down further to notice someone else brought it up.
Spielberg produced it and his name appears in the poster so I guess that's why Enter mixed up. Ah well, it happens.
I noticed that too, Spielberg was the producer of back to the future, not the director
Me: How about Atlantis and Treasure Planet?
Irritated "Uhhh....." that trope is cringey and predictable.
MrKlausbaudelaire it's "Liar Revealed"
I kinda think both "Liar revealed" and "liar reveal" fit, since they are just different tenses of the same verb. Personaly I go for the later because this cliché starts when the liar IS revealed, but sure, the cliché lasts for several moments AFTER the liar is revealed as well. (minutes, hours, days, depends on the plot)
You typoed and wrote "Liar Review"
I consider both "Liar revealed" and "Liar reveal" a valid name for the cliché. Liar review, the reveal of a liar. The verb in a tense thats more neutral.
Warning! This is a rant:
I how adults don't take cartoons seriously, so they just say "hey if cartoons are just stupid things for kids to watch we'll make a bunch of adult cartoons that are stupid things for adults to watch," without looking into the depth and complexities that some kids shows have.
Maybe try watching bojack horseman it has some comedy but not as much as y'know a comedy
Futurama has actually become more famous for sentimental drama than comedy since they did episodes like Luck of the Fryrish, Leela’s Homeworld, The Sting and especially Jurassic Bark.
Don't forget Game of Tones.
The last two episodes you mentioned are ones I haven't seen in a decade but still remember better than almost any other episode...

I still don't watch it (or any of Seth's nonsense) these days but I was lucky enough, one night, to switch to an action sequence where Hayley was beating up her father. Needless to say, it put a satisfied smile on my face...until the ending of the episode made me change the channel again in disgust. 9_9
I see nothing but animated humdrum in Seth's future.
Laura Marschmallow Same here
+Laura Marschmallow Yea, but somehow it's also boring.
it annoys when people say "its a cartoon calm down" to us that is not the point, we find the abuse of Meg not funny, its unfunny and pointless, lets hope to go back with her being a normal teenage girl and not a butt monkey character.
I love family guy but that always does bother me. Originally meg was an outcast because there was only one girl on set and she wasn’t part or writing. Seth and the other guys didn’t understand girls at all, but I don’t think this is a good reason to make meg so abused!

Maybe... It's likely... :)
Basically the reason why I didn't like the choice of actors for The Hunger Game movies.
Depending on presentation you can make the mundane sexual or the sexual mundane. This does not have to be done by removing all good aesthetic
Even south park doesnt have repulsive characters and they certainly arent porn material
Static Shock has one of the best rap theme songs in animation. Also, Boondocks is up there too.
Cam Gaines Straight facts. Theme songs were fire
How about Danny Phantom?
Agreed. These two theme songs (and the Danny Phantom theme, although Enter's already mentioned it) are the only rap thene songs of a cartoon that is fine.
I was just about to mention Static Shock, but Boondocks does it extremely well also.

My idea is that the reason why adult shows look so poor is to stop parents from confusing the shows with kids' shows that are actually well-animated.
A lot of it is also likely trying to ride on the coattails of South Park and Family Guy, and laziness.
@@jackhudner3804 maybe people shouldnt freak the fuck out about intended audience
I appreciate how blunt and honest you are in your videos. Some may say you’re overreacting or being too harsh, but I’d say brutal honesty is totally necessary with this sort of thing.
Yeah, and given all the characters had been through (especially Nick and Judy) they deserved to do something fun once it was all sorted out.
Zootopia gets away with it because the rest of it is so amazing
It helps immensely that they established the pop star in the world already and made multiple characters fans. That makes it far more logical for them to go to a concert together at the end than just randomly deciding to dance to a catchy song.
And the scene where Judy enters Zootopia for the first time establishes that she listens to Gazelle on her music player, so it makes sense she'd go to a Gazelle concert with Nick later.
I agree. It wasn't just randomly thrown in.
I'll say it again. Castlevania on Netflix. Both a cartoon aimed at adults that's fantasy/horror instead of comedy, and a video game adaptation to boot!
I’ve heard of it before, and have Netflix at home, so I’ll try it sometime.
You’re not wrong, it’s a great series, even though it’s still short, it’s just that he wasn’t counting anime, and Castlevania is considered an anime.
I hope the rumours that they will make a berserk remake are true
I HAVE SO BEEN MEANING TO GET TO IT OMG THEY APPARENTLY USED BLOODY TEARS FROM CASTLEVANIA 2 IN SEASON 2
Samurai Jack's theme is just his name a bunch of times, and I can't speak for Boondocks because I never watched it
Raps can work if they fit the theme of the franchises.
-JT Music's Cuphead Rap sounds like old timey music
-Descendants' Be Our Guest has a high school acapella feel
-Mario's rap has a video game feel.
Cause Samurai Champloos music was primarily made by Nujabes, who is actually a talent in the hip hop industry.
JT Music's is fanmade and made by someone who cares. It wouldn't work if it was in the actual game.
Descendent's Be Our Guest is shit.
Cliches are like salt... That is a fantastic simile! I'm going to be using that.
You're thinking of tropes.
Agreed
As TV Tropes says, "Tropes are Tools."
It's only a cliché if it detracts from the story.
Most (if not all) adult cartoons try too hard to be ..adult. They always have unnecessary violence, swearing, sexual references etc. usually because anything animated is correlated more with children. Its almost as if they're too insecure about being an animated show that they have to have all these shitty vulgar jokes and they have to have an unappealing art style to accentuate the fact that theres 'no kids allowed' or something
(slayerrunes did a video about this if you want to watch, i find it super interesting and tbh it really be one of the most annoying animation cliches ruclips.net/video/U-7nA4SNDlY/видео.html )
And that's why I hate adult cartoons...
There are exceptions, but other than that, yeah--it's horrendous.
I can't watch these 'adult' cartoons ((parents won't let me)) but from what I've heard it sounds right. I mean, if you look the "shock comedy" of those shows brutally beating and torturing people for laughs and compare that to something like Avatar/LoK, which is more serious?
Wan Shi Tong:
You think you're the first person to believe their war was justified?! Countless others before you have come here, seeking weapons, weaknesses or battle strategies!
Aang:
We had no choice! Please, we're just desperate to protect the people we love!
Wan Shi Tong:
And now I'm going to protect what I love.
(Wan Shi Tong spreads his wings; the library starts to shake and flood with sand)
Wan Shi Tong:
I'm taking my knowledge back!
That's why Bob's Burgers is great because it avoids those
It's "PURELY" for #7 but other than that I agree (Yes I know I'm a Grammar Nazi I'm sorry I have mild OCPD).
Eunro well for designs of most adult cartoons are objectively lazy or ugly

It's okay to leave your comfortable life! Out there is safe!"*
A lot of animated movies uses this cliche, especially Moana.
agreed,

Dr. Bacilli Bob the Zebra I like that movie and thought it was handled pretty well.
Remaking Mulan without music is like having a Doom or Wolfenstein game without metal music
Atari Jaguar: Allow me introduce myself.
I know this video was made before this came out, but Primal is an excellent example of an adult show that doesn’t rely on comedy
Probably because I've only watched 2 anime, but I haven't seen any of these clichés.
Anime's aimed at girls also often have girls abuse guys for comedy. And speaking of girls abusing boys, that got taken up to eleven in the later years. Pretty much 75% of anime's are nothing but girls abusing boys nowadays.
Then your lucky you haven't seen anime's like Nisekoi, Familiar of Zero, Baka & test etc..
I blamed Disney for the death fakeouts when the character was just knocked out...
Dante Bell
A lot of the clichés you mentioned are not recent I've seen them in tons of shows growing up and watching a lot of shows from the past (Talking mostly 80's - Now)
And I noticed they're getting worst to the point they're really uncomfortable...
My most hated cliche in western animation is the designated hero cliche where the hero or mc does alot of unheroic things and is a total jerk to everyone yet we were supposed to root for him
I agree
This comes from when someone wants/the plot needs for X character to be a hero, but they forgot/don't know how to actually make them act like one
I don't think Atlantis flopped, but it definitely wasn't their most profitable movie.
yeah I just looked it up. The worldwide gross caused it to not be a flop.
Unfortunately, the remake treatment rarely happens for films that need it
I would actually like to see a version of the Little Nemo movie that's as crazy and surreal as the original comic strip (with no musical numbers and no kid-friendly comic relief characters.)
@@pleasedislikemyvideo2101 That was because it's competition was shrek.
I have a few concepts for adult non-comedy cartoons too!
good luck to you my dude
I have similar plans! The only issue: My cartoon falls between the adult and teen demographics, and I don't know where it'd belong.
It has some humour, with elements of mystery, sci-fi, action, and fantasy. I suppose it's akin to Adventure Time or Gravity Falls.
Actually, the series storyline is entirely finished. I just need to add in the fine details.
I got a couple non-comedic adult cartoons as well. One is a grim and gritty, ultra violent noir style show about a detective. And the other I'll get back to you on it.
@Ivory The Elephant DO IT! :)

It's not really a "version" because it follows a whole different story, but you know, Close Enough I guess.
I think he just used the footage as filler, not necessarily an example.
Then it's a profoundly stupid and misleading choice of filler.
Enthused Norseman Mistakes are sometimes made.

*Some form of violence, adult jokes, great characters, fucking amazing story, animations etc*
Heh, kid cartoons.
AnimeFreakLucky7 It's... Kinda boring tbh
The documents that were stolen set off the owners of the documents they were trying to hide, and are used to up security.
i can make my name long and nobody will stop me I don't understand. Can you explain further please? :)
I agree with you, let's say, you make a story about a knight that wants to save a princess from a dragon.
Cliche as fuck
BUT!

THANK YOU!!! finally, someone confronts the Disney move remakes as a straight up cliche and not just a trend
MayerEO Well, it’s a theory he completely pulled from his ass. It is not remotely accurate.

Corie good point
If a episode starts in a insane world and ends in an insane world it whould not be noticable if it gets weirder. If it starts in a normal world before building up to the insane world you have a place to compare against the weird stuff. The jerry and beth subplots are the normal world and the rick and morty subplots are the insane world.
Exactly! :D
Mulan without songs? Dishonor on you! Dishonor on your cow!
The fact that every cartoon needs to be for either children or adults, as if pre teens/teens don't exist.
Even the worst cliches can be done well. Except love triangles, those are always bad.
Mark Cobuzzi he was making a reference...
Someone should make a love square
Emperor Palpitoad Honestly, Quasi was lucky to be alive at the end of the movie
I think that The Boondocks and Aqua Teen Hunger Force had good opening rap theme songs!
at least Boondocks does
"Hopefully in 2019 we can stop this Mickey Mouse Protection act shit"
Dear Enter, I come to you from two years in the future. Guess what? It's worse than ever and there's no light at the end of the tunnel in sight.
Let’s not forget the ‘two best friends become lovers’ trope or everyone assuming any character on screen is gay or something even when it’s very unnecessary
Stephen Spielberg didn’t directed Back to the future. It was Robert Zemekes.
Zemeckis, but yeah.
Spielberg was an executive producer on that movie, but wasn't the director.
He's going to kick himself over that glaring error. You don't mess with Zemeckis...
I was hoping somebody would point that out.😉
I hate to be that guy--especially if someone already said this--but Spielberg didn't direct the Back To The Future films. Yes, he produced them, but those are all Robert Zemeckis's movies.
But your point is a good one. Spielberg has a distinct style, but he's made fantasy, sci-fi, action, drama, suspense and thriller films.
Spawn: The Animated Series is the closest thing I can think of for a non-comedy animated adult series.
ITS 11 O CLOCK BUT MR ENTER IS TOO IMPORTANT
I was thinking the exact same thing! I've watched so many animated films from Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, and WAG (Lego movie creators), and this film manages to rip off every single one of them!
It takes a very special kind of low to achieve that level of incompetence!
AMERIFOX You mean Walt Disney Animation Studios for and WAG is Warner Bros. Animation (Only for their newer theatrical feature films)
Feature Length How true; can we please get an adult cartoon that isn’t trying to ride on Simpsons and South Park’s coattails?
modern south park has tons of moments with seriously good animation, and you can tell the artists put a lot of effort into it.
As Roger Ebert put it - "Every time an animated film is successful, you have to read all over again about how animation isn't 'just for children' but 'for the whole family,' and 'even for adults going on their own.' No kidding!"
As for an adult animated series that's a mystery - I'd recommend the anime series "Monster", though good luck finding it.
ironballs16 I’m not sure about the first part, but I agree that adult animation should really look to the variety in Japan. Why can’t America make its own Berserk or Death Note or Bleach?
Well you can find it on Watchcartoonsonline, if it's still there. Nice choice though, loved Monster.

@@Anteksanteri I'm not sure why that is an issue? Also consider the fact that it's a Japanese work, they use foreign languages in their titles like we do with Latin and shit :P
I think the "dad noise", was Seth MacFarlane voice warm-up for Peter, and the voice recorders recorded it with out Seth knowing.
I'm a story driven person. I like watching things for the plot and character development, not to see the same shit and the same jokes in every episode, so I heavily agree with #8. That's honestly why I watch more anime than American cartoons (but a looooot of recent cartoons here are more story driven and I love that.)
Now I can give you a list of tired anime cliches, the biggest ones being in romance/slice of life type shows.

Its just an opinion.I dont care if they "should or shouldn't" be in there ,I just find most of them entertaining.
oh shit you were being serious, well uh I guess this is a bad time to say that shark tale is a pretty bad movie
Defectus I really like Shark Tale.
I'll stomach the Diseny remakes until they give us the Hunchback of Notre Dam in live action that is actually dark and gritty. Make the gargoyles firmly into a creation of Quasimodo's mind and cut their screen time but change nothing else. That would make it my favorite movie of all time.
Gerard Guzmán Sandoval They are potentially doing that. Look it up.
I'd love it if they would make Frollo a little more like he is in the book. He started out rescuing Quasimodo (and not killing his mother) when he found him as a abandoned child, really cared for him and raised him like a son.
And I'd want the live action movie to be different because else it would be unnecessary.
I've been waiting for that to happen! The only thing I want is Tom Hooper as the director.
Make the Gargoyles also more like fatherly figures to Quasimodo instead of stupid quirky friends.
Good! I am glad they listened to this video. October 14, 2021, 11:16pm
