Your use of line weight shows how much you've honed your skills over the years;. The way you can simplify the features but still keep the structure makes me thing you're decent at facial anatomy too. Thanks for contributing this. I would have killed to see this video when I was 18
I think this is very good. Remember it is not a portrait but a caricature. A great source book is Tom Richmond's book The Mad Art of Charicature. Tom is a MAD Magazine caricaturist. To quote John Kascht 'Caricature is a portrait with the volume turned up'
Caricatures are an exaggeration of features. Intention matters and the intention of the artist is to exaggerate the prominent features of the guy in the book for artistic purposes. The “INTENTION” of old war propaganda was to propagate and humiliate etc. Different caricature artists pick and choose what and how much to exaggerate as to not offend. But again that goes back to intent.
Side note: the teeth are overly exaggerated to the point where they do match the reference.they are crooked, they do not buck out:

I'm constantly intrigued by this mode of seeing and drawing. As a conventionally realistic artist, I try very hard, but struggle to get even the basics of a cartoon style. This way of interpreting subjects seems to be fundamentally about making clearly defined shapes, formulating clear decisions and inventing an attractive design. It is often made to look both logical and straightforward by its skilful proponents, though I doubt these skills can be taught or passed on - unless the recipient already has an in-built sense of structure and simplicity. To make a 'cute' image seems to be one of the most difficult things to achieve in drawing.
Has to be ingrained in you. Practice.

All these comments about this being racially offensive!You folks do realize this is a character drawing right? That’s the nature of this type of art. Purposeful extreme and/or comical exaggerations of features. If you want exact renditions, go to the realism channel!
Lazy drawing--the man's teeth are hardly the dominant feature, yet for some reason the artist picked them to exaggerate (which is typically how Asians were depicted) more than any other feature. It's a fair criticism.
Yeah, there's absolutely no other reason to exaggerate an Asian man's teeth to such an extent, caricature or otherwise.
And you don't get to tell people what they can and can't, should or shouldn't watch. We're calling out blatant racism on the artist's part.

So to draw these is by exaggerate and replace them with big or smaller proportions of the original reference?
CC CreationZ yea, it doesn’t have to be every feature. Some are well kept but the head will be ballooned a little to make the cartoon style of a person. I also think this one is just fine too. It’s up to you, what you want to draw

Being a caricature artist myself I know his challenging it can be to get a decent likeness and how you can go off the rails sometimes when you try to exaggerate. In this lexample I felt he md on two very prominent points the hair and the teeth.I look at the hair as a type if helmet and you really need to draw that more accurate not filling in the hair doesn't help matters which is why I had a brush marker used specifically for drawing hair. Although the teeth might have protruded a not it was not to the extent he exaggerated it and resulted in him drawing a stereotype if a Buck toothed Asian. I felt the same was more wide horizontal than the way he made it.
Lastly o ce you've drawn the container of the head shape you're pretty much stuck. Trying to fit the other facial features into it he might've been better off drawing the features first and the head shape last. This is the way I was taught
Elgin Subwaysurfer Bolling every artist is different. I’ve seen numerous lectures and stuff on RUclips and they all have their own special focus. I think it looks hilarious and I’d love one of myself. Caricatures all look stereotypical to me. Like some have HUGE teeth. Protruding almost past the nose. But they’re white so it’s okay ?.... it’s always okay.

Although I like your caricatures for the most part, there is no way I would draw an Asian person this way. That looks like a WW2 propaganda caricature.

I'm the LEAST sensitive person you'll probably ever meet, and even I think this caricature is a dangerously stereotypical racist drawing--as someone who draws, I realize caricatures are not meant to be photo realistic, and often exaggerate and deform major features that capture the essence of a person's face, here the artist unusually exaggerates the teeth, which are NOT the dominant feature of this man's face.

Tip : Make out a face of the guy as if you were mocking his expression and you'll end up getting an exaggerated face of the same guy, now imagine that, that guy is making out your face exactly and draw that, you'll end up having a caricature.

What kind of that marker pen you use to draw ?
Recently I've been using the Faber Castell Pitt artist pen "big brush". i forgot what i used in this video though.
It said ‘Mackette’ on the side.
You could easily just look up references online
yeah when I bought the book i was having a hard time finding reference with decent (one source lighting) of the same person from several angles. I dont like blown out light sources. I'm sure there are websites now that have it. now probably.

I understand caricatures exaggerate features however, the buck teeth, which he doesn't have in his photo, is a totally old rendition of a stereotypical cartoon of Asian people. Not right man, sigh.
There a lot of things that are different in the drawing compared to the photo, a caricature supposed to create a character, not a person, the drawer is already very aware its a stereotype because thats his intention
