  • Let’s compare the BIG 3 full-service US airlines and see which one is the best choice for travelers. When it comes to flying to, from, and within the United States, three big legacy carriers usually appear among a wide array of options. Whether you’re in a major American metropolis or a smaller city, you may have a choice between flying American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines.
We look at customer satisfaction, punctuality, bag losses, domestic and global reach, and partner airlines.

Pre covid, I think most business travelers would chose the airline with the best coverage for their needs. For example, I use to live in Denver. United was the best option. Now I'm in Seattle and Delta is the best option. If you travel a lot, getting to your destination with the least amount of stops is very important.

I used to be a United frequent flyer until I moved close to a Delta hub. After a few rides with them I converted my status and never looked back lol. Delta, among these three, is just the best choice. I don’t care if I have to pay more for a delta route than a United/AA route that is the same but cheaper. I know I’m buying a better product.

Good report. I found your article informative and compatible with my feelings about these airlines. As a U.S. citizen I always try to choose a foreign airline( preferably Asian airlines) when flying internationally. Their cabin service is consistently much better than any U.S. flagged carrier. I honestly don't know if it is the culture or just exceptional management of these airlines. Having flown for many years, my all time favorite airline is Singapore Airlines followed by ANA, JAL, CHINA AIRLINES(TAIWAN) and EVA Airlines. On any of these airlines I am confident of having a pleasant flight with service that American airlines used to have back in the '70' and '80's, the " good old days" of flying. I do realize that many of the above mentioned airlines are subsidized by their national governments but their performance is so much better than any U.S. airline.

You are correct my friend. I just book a flight to Brasil back and forth from MIA, and the big three US airlines average price were $1500. I just bought it for $400 round trip and real food instead a cup of water and a bag of mini pretzels. US airline are ridiculous expensive and poor services.

    • @t4w1m94
      @t4w1m94 Год назад

Not sure about the others but I can tell you now that EVA Air is fully private with no government subsidy, and China Airlines is state-owned whilst turning a profit, and actually generates a net gain for the government rather than needing a subsidy.

We are planning another trip to Hawaii for vacation, and my wife has been trying to convince me to fly American because it's a little cheaper..... I was apprehensive... but after watching this and reading some of the comments, it's a wrap...🤣🤣 I'm not fooling with American Airlines.... with my luck, our luggage would never make it. I will never forget how helpful and attentive the Delta flight attendants were the 1st time we took our sons, and one of them got sick on the flight home due to the turbulence. They were awesome.

Having flown on all three across the pond a few times (all pre Covid), my personal ranking looks like this:
    1. Delta
    2. United
3 to (insert high number here)
    (high number plus 1). American
The gap between United and Delta is way smaller than between United and American.
My first US trip on American was supposed to go from my home base of Frankfurt to Charlotte and onwards to Chicago, with the Return being Chicago - Philadelphia - Frankfurt. Out of these four flights, only one happened as planned - the first one. Already in Frankfurt we got rebooked on a different flight from Charlotte to Chicago, and when we started boarding for the return flight, they announced "technical problems" halfway into boarding and eventually canceled the flight. We got rebooked on a return trip via Heathrow. (Surprisingly our bags made it)
The second time, the return leg Charlotte - Frankfurt got no less than 3 aircraft swaps after they started boarding, eventually leaving us with other seats than the ones we had booked and paid for with no compensation (Another gripe of mine is that even on transatlantic flights you have to pay to reserve a seat in advance on American, unless you are willing to have some crappy middle seat in the middle block). Add to this that the seat in front of us was designated as "crew rest" (which is totally okay), but that meant that a flight attendant SLAMMED the seatbacks into full recline right after take-off. When I politely told her that I totally understand that they need a rest area, but if she can put the seatback upright *as long as nobody uses it*, as it was already unbearable for us, we got yelled at "THIS IS A CREW REST AND IT HAS TO BE LIKE THIS!!!!" Needless to say - no crew member used it during the entire flight.Yeah, thanks for nothing. So while I think out of the three their planes have the cooles paint job, I will not set foot on their planes again unless I really have to.
When it comes to reliability and on-time performance, United and Delta have been on the same level for me. The only baggage oopsie I had to go through was not United's fault, but Lufthansa (they do the check-in for United in Frankfurt) and the baggage handlers at Frankfurt Airport. Could have happened anywhere else. However, Delta seems to have a slightly better cabin service with slightly more friendly attendants. (This is not to say that United's attendants were unfriendly, it's more like the difference between 🙂and 😁.) The main point for putting Delta ahead of United is that at least for my routes they use planes I like more than what United has to offer. I generally prefer the 767 or A330/A350 over the 777. The only advantage of United over Delta is their legendary "Channel 9" on the entertainment system, but with that needing the captain's permission, this is hit and miss.

  • @RobEJC
    @RobEJC 2 года назад +7

Unfortunately, the domestic airport I generally fly out of is not a hub or focus city, so the aircraft the Big 3 fly in/out of there tend to be older, dirty, with deferred maintenance on many interior fitments, though Delta does send an A220 in once a week (I have not yet flown on it, though). Just depends where in the system you get into things, and I rarely check a bag and don't worry about lost luggage.

Coming from Asia, this will be useful for me post Covid when I want to go to South America via USA.
I'm a loyal Oneworld member having hold a membership in a FFP for almost a decade. However I know American isn't a favourite judging from online comments. Which is a shame, having the best opportunity to earn more points and status is from them.
I also hold an airline FFP from Star Alliance and SkyMiles membership. For Star Alliance due to current pandemic and can't leave the country for now, can only earn miles on daily groceries, which is better than none. For SkyMiles, the perks are good compared to United and American but unfortunately the use is very limited here and I got to wait till pandemic is all over.
Having said that, Delta is the number 1 choice if given the opportunity. Just wait for the skies to be blue again. 😊

Given a choice, I would choose any East Asian carrier over any North American one. The big 3 gulf carriers are also worlds ahead of the North American ones.

Not really an option for domestic flying. The US big 3 have a near monopoly on domestic US flights due to market policy (a similar situation exists in Canada). It's anti-competitive but to be fair, I also I wouldn't expect any non-American airline to cater to any domestic travel outside of cities like NYC, LA and the like...so the US government kind of cornered the market for US airlines with the caveat that the smaller less profitable communities be served (at the cost of nickel and diming the rest of the country).

I’ll be honest, I fly American because they always charge the lowest price for tickets to wherever I want to fly. Delta is insanely expensive so I’m never gonna be using them unless I win the lottery. And United thinks it’s okay to beat up passengers for not getting off a flight they paid for, and leaving an infant on board in a boiling plane with no air conditioning, so they’re dead to me.

I've flown domestically in the US pretty extensively, mostly on AA, but I have flown all three. I find the experience pretty interchangeable to be honest - there really isn't that much difference between them. One carrier might have a better IFE, for example, but another might have a better seat. I only favour AA because of oneworld. Service is usually fine - Americans are generally very service-oriented, so most crew in my experience are friendly and welcoming on all three carriers. What makes travel unpleasant in the US is the overcrowding of airports, and the appalling and atrocious behaviour of the other passengers. Virgin America was was a noticeably different airline and were lovely to travel with, especially in Business Class, but my problem with Virgin America was the slightly misogynistic and very dated sexy-tight-red-uniform-pouty-red-lipstick schtick that they had (and which Virgin Atlantic persist with). And their network was small, and their transcontinental service was not competitive. Still, they were lovely to fly with on short hops around the west coast.

Was going to say this as well. Im honestly humored by the people who are die hard fans of any of the big 3. All 3 of them have a below average service compared to many airlines around the world. The service isnt memorable or varied enough IMO to warrant a favorite. I have chosen which ever is the most convenient for me, which has been each one at various points in my life.

Yup. I imagined Delta would take this easily. It looks like the most complete and polished of the three, even when I haven't flown in any of the three.

I’m convinced that one of the biggest reasons people tend to be loyal to Delta is their partnership with AMEX. Delta is the only transfer partner out of the big 3. It’s pretty smart. IMHO once United has more than 50% of their narrow body aircraft flying with their new interior they are going to take a lot of market share in O’hare away from American and around the country where people are still flying delta at United Hubs.

Here's my question: How accurate and reliable are these statistics? You said yourself their ratings are 'controversial at times'.

    • @LongHaulbySimpleFlying

Thanks for your question. Statistics (baggage, on-time-performance) are compiled by the Department of Transportation and should be quite accurate and reliable. Ratings and reviews (which are not statistics), no matter what the product or service, tend to be more subjective and will vary with each customer. -CL

    ALASKA AIRlines with the 🏆🏆🏆🏆
And they're now in the OneWorld Allianace ⭐
Jetblue would be tied for 1st if it wasn't for their botched handoff / lack of 100% thru processing of checked baggage on International connecting flights!
Flew United LAX to EWR 1 week ago, Economy Plus... on a Dreamliner + another 2 lane wide body... Pleasurable ✈️ but believe that must be due to the Plane normally used for International flight, but now being flown Domestically due to the Pandemic.
American Airlines... the SMALLEST 💺 you have to upgrade just to move your feet, but the seats are not even 1-2" wider, still on top of your seatmates.

Yeah but UA domestically is horrible. When I flew from SFO-EWR I always made sure that the plane was coming from Asia and that the international crew was continuing on to New Jersey. That's the only way I'll fly United
