Big 3 Battle: United Airlines vs Delta Airlines vs American Airlines
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 май 2024
- American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines are the three largest airlines in the US. And American and Delta are the two largest airlines globally. How have they risen to this position?
The story of their growth is fascinating. All three have origins in the early decades of flying, and all have played a part in the global expansion of aviation, airports, and aircraft development. There has also been plenty of consolidation alongside the competition, boosting their size and reach.
Along the way, there has been a raft of experimentation, alongside numerous other airlines that have failed. These three are, in many cases, built on the remains of the failed airlines. This video will explore this growth, the collaboration, and the mergers that have brought us to the three airlines as we know them today.

2040: Thank you for flying United Delta of American Airlines.
United American Delta Airlines sounds better
That's amazing! Lol
United delta airlines of Amarican airlines
And then Southwest will still be pissing them all off.
I hope this never happens
Keep in mind that US Airways actually bought out AA. . . they took the better known AA name after the merger and moved HQ to DFW.
Chemical Bank bought Chase Manhatten, changed their name to Chase, which then bought JP Morgan - oh dear, decisions... The Chemical board still ran the show, but they had never had an "image", so no reverting to that...two great brands, which to choose....Wow, JP Morgan Chase. In conclusion, whatever they choose as a name, we still get landed with the bailout bill when they enevitably, regularly, face a near collapse, same as the damned banks
And before that America West bough US Airways and kept the US branding...
@@whiskeysk Its kinda of funny becasue if you look really deep into the paperwork of American Airlines I've read that it still say American West Airlines with a DBA as American airlines.
Yes! The same way chemical bank brought chase Manhattan and kept the chase name in the ‘90s
@@snoozeCTRL There seems to be some kind of echo in here....
This video focused on the history and mergers. It would be nice to have a deep dive comparing their fleets and fleet strategies.
Delta is so punctual, safe and the service is outstanding. That is what I like most about this airline. American Airlines is classy, safe, good service as well. US Airways, when I flew with it, it was punctual, the service good quality as well and well I lived in Charlotte NC, and it is the major airline there. The designs are beautiful of the three. Although there was a quick logo design for Delta before the actual one. I remember the tail had like a flag waving kind of design on the tail. Thought it was pretty.
I've flown with Delta and love their services and routes. They have my vote for what I'm flying next if possible
Great my dad works there
@Greyhound 99 I don’t fly American they’re generally too expensive and I’ve had a couple occasions where they lost the luggage
@Justinian Yi I'm sure they've all improved however I'd still take United over AA given their track record on my account and the 3 bankruptcies that have been filed for.
Good for flying to Tampa
We flew delta and the gate agent and the lady at the customer service desk were very mean and it wasn’t a pleasant experience
Understatement of the week goes to “problems with fatigue and pressurisation”
The comet Ripped it self apart in the air like 10 times and the mention it like that 😂🤣
The aviation jargon “uncontrolled decompression” comes to mind.
Over a decade ago I was offered a job as a flight officer at both United and Delta. I picked Delta and haven’t regretted my choice.
When i started watching this i was suprised you did not have hundreds of thousands of subs because your content was so good
this isnt their main channel. their main channel has 98.4K subs
@@ShortFinal oh, i was confused
This is a new channel also, I think less than two months old
I think it was actually USAirways that bought American Airlines. And it was America West that bought USAirways prior to that.
America West, a childhood and teenage travel memory of mine!
Imagine being an executive for America West and being told that, in a ten year span, you're going to be in charge of one of the three biggest airlines in the world, without ever changing jobs.
keep 'em coming man, you're awesome🤗
OMG!!
From where do you get so much ideas to make such great videos.....
Nice...
Keep up the great work.....
Delta easily. Only reason is I live near Atlanta so I mean what other airline would I choose?
Southwest
Delta is the "healthiest" airline from a financial and passenger standpoint. The others still pack you in like cattle, virus be damned. Look at who is doing furloughs and layoffs. It isn't Delta.
@@richardsilver1591 is that why delta just reported a 4 Billion dollar quarterly loss. Southwest has the strongest balance sheet in the industry right now.
@@TheRangerman00 southwest is good but they aren't in the argument they were scattered around atlanta in 2017 but I rarely see a southwest plane in atlanta anymore 😭
There must be nothing more Atlantan than cracking open an ice cold Coke as your Delta flight cruises 30,000 feet over the city.
Since I live right near San Francisco, United is my carrier of choice! It only makes sense due to SFO being one of their hubs.
American has a hub at sfo too and cant wait tell u get dragged off
Wow you got some attitude. American does not have a hub at SFO btw.

My request previously you were doing a video on the history of liveries for American airlines and also some European airlines kindly continue that video I am very eager to know the history of liveries of Asian carriers...
Thanks much for the amazing video.....
A fascinating look into the big 3 in the States, nice one SF!
Very informative comparison. Thank you.
Been flying United almost exclusively for ten years. Southwest lost my business when I had to deal with an extremely rude flight attedant and the airline lost my bag on three consecutive flights. United has been smooth sailing.
ah do you haven't been dragged off the plane yet? XD
@@matthijshoogeland7893 nope. Lol! But I have no problem accepting $400 vouchers to take a later flight. I'm usually pretty flexible in my flight arrangements.
Southwest is meh, American planes are bleh now and the staff are unfriendly
United is great. Last time I flew with them they were friendly and the plane was clean.
no offense mate but hope you don't take guitars 😂
United Airlines is our go to. They've got the best flights out of Denver by far, as it's a hub airport of course!
Same for atlanra
My favorite airline of choice depends on the route. Overall, my best experience is Alaska.
*alaska airlines*
_based in seattle_
My airport is lucky and Delta air lines has a focus city here. Delta is also looking into adding transatlantic and transpacific routes here as Beijing is of high demand because of local headquarters for Lenovo and large operations of IBM.
They got a spectacular livery as well, it's so beautiful in itself
Alaska has good loyalty program, other than that, DL is better imo
I like jet blue :D
Good video
I liked it
Thank you for telling 😊
I have flown all three and I perfer Delta just because it treats the customers better
Great topic and content! United is my favorite, though Alaska is a smaller US airline that I also love.
They bought out Virgin America a few years back
So glad I found your channel. Ive recently become obsessed with aviation and this channel is a trove of info

That was great. Thanks for their histories
Can you do the same but separate video for each airlines and more details ? thx love it
Would you happen to have sources for the background music? I think they sound very nice and relaxing.
Correction: The CEO of United Post-Merger was Jeff Smisek, former CEO of Continental.
I still remember Continental before it was bought out by United and US Airways before it was bought out by AA. Delta Airlines was the largest airline in the world in many ways before US and AA merged. A few decades ago, it was Pan Am that was the largest before they abruptly went bankrupt in 1991. I teared up at 2:52 when I saw what was in the background...😥
I completely disagree: the merger between United and Continental did NOT go smoothly. It was one of the worst mergers in US history.
One could argue that this merger is still going on - 10 years later!
What a shame that good old Continental had to make way for a hated successor. Continental's ex-CEO Larry Kellner recommended against any mergers back when he was Continental CEO.
@@Blank00 I have to admit: I too liked Continental, flew many times with them and experienced great customer service!
Yeah for real. It was also the continental CEO who remained who ruined United
@@christopherwaits7852 that's because Smisek thought very differently than his predecessors. Larry Kellner and Gordon Bethune did not have the same scumbag mentality as Smisek. And besides, keep in mind that before United and Continental merged, United had many problems under their pre-merger CEO, Glenn Tilton as well as under Smisek. Pre-merger United went bankrupt in 2005 and never recovered before the merger. Also, remember when United broke guitars? That was when Continental had no plans on doing a full-on merger with United.
I worked as a flight attendant for Continental. The whole corporate culture changed with the merger and has never recovered in my opinion. We used to be proud of our airline but that all changed with the merger.
viewing the voice in a380 video (a380 hibernation) in which you just tell about write about the future topic i had one :
In this video you just go through the US major airlines,i want a video of an idea how delta come with cash burn, how to decrease cash burn ,what aircraft should be put and how to deal with COVID-19 pandemic i get articles i analysis it but the article is too long so i come to you, thanks if you make this video
The United merger did not retain the CEO of United... Jeff Smizek the ceo of Continental became the ceo of the new company... I can’t believe these easily found facts could be incorrect
They said Delta was formed in Georgia. It was formed in Monroe, Louisiana. It was right on the plane
@@dasmellyyooper Incorrect actually. From Delta Airlines’ website: “1925: Huff Daland Dusters, the predecessor of Delta, is founded in Macon, Ga., before moving to Monroe, La., a few months later.”
This video has many interesting peaces of information about how the different airlines developed threw the years from it's start to the current date & long with way it didn't require the routs & airlines it didn't enquire for expanding its service.
Delta has the classiest look and service
Delta has the ugliest tail livery.
Can you upload a similar video comparing the 3 big European airlines: Lufthansa, British Airways and KLM?
I find Delta very interesting in their choices, especially in the last 3-5 years, seeing them give up on various cities they had such a long tenure using as their focus cities, allowing the budget carriers to take the cities over quickly as they leave. It's sometimes puzzling, like here, they gave up on PDX being a focus airport for them, even though they had consistently remained right at the very top in tickets sold, passengers carried and people talking of them and liking their services here alongside Alaska Airlines. But I believe in 2017 it was when they officially announced they'd be ridding Portland as a focus city, and rid most of their routes here, too. Southwest almost instantly came in and took over most of their routes.
I flew mostly American and United back in the 90s, with Delta a distant third. Didn't do much travel from '95 to '09, but now over the past ten years in my current job I've become a Delta convert and fly them pretty much exclusively. They go where I need to, and their service has been excellent.
Damn, the old livery of the United planes around 9:08 was great...those planes have DRIP...that matte grey look was a lot more sleek than the current United/Continental blend with blue/white
Great video 👍
American was acquired by Usiair, which was acquired by America West. In both cases the owners chose to keep the better known brand name.
Someone should tell them to paint a plane in America West colors, just for fun. That's such a wild series of acquisitions!
@@TomQuiNEstPasLa totally Not Sarcasam
I get that you didn't include regional operators since those are technically other airlines, but they're often subsidiaries and have the same livery. Would prefer you mention the regional subsidiaries (connection, eagle, express) as they play a major part of their visibility in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
Can you do an overview of the regional airlines in the United States?
United would be my airline of choice
@Hunch0 i really hate united airlines
The seats are terrible

Delta would be my choice as the airline to fly. They have the most friendly and helpful employees in the air and on the ground.

Delta, for sure!

My favorite airline is the one that gives me the best deal. I am planning a trip from Austin to Melbourne, Australia in April. Business class on United is almost $2,000 less than American/Qantas. There is a nearly equal spread between the offerings for premium economy.
I lived in Melbourne for nearly five years. I flew from DFW to Melbourne or vice versa 28 times. Most of my trips were on Qantas/American. I am in American's frequent flyer program, but given the price spread stated above, I decided on United for my trip to Australia in April.
I'm a Delta Guy.
Untied mainly flies out of (ugh!) Newark.
I live in New York City.
We don't shlepp to Joizey.
Delta is strong in LaGuardia and Idlewild/JFK.
They have far superior customer service, too!
Newark is only convenient for people who live in Manhattan. LaGuardia and JFK are much more convenient for everyone else.
@@jmlinden7 I live in Manhattan. On Carnegie Hill. I mainly use LGA/Delta, or Idlewild/Kennedy when I fly internationally.
The thought of Newark Airport nauseates me.
@@stuartlee6622 Newark airport is ok if you take the train there, also the United terminal is newly renovated. I would never fly into any of the other terminals though
I’ve always been a Delta girl since I was a child. We flew that airline throughout the 1960s and early 70s until we moved to Hawaii at which point we mostly flew United and Braniff. Eventually Delta began service from DFW to HNL. My grandfather was good friends with CE Woolman, the founder of Delta but I currently fly United and Southwest mostly, and occasionally American because they service the routes I need to travel. But Delta forever lives in my heart!❤
AA hubs in PHL, but my last few leisure flights have all been with F9.
I’ve flown all three and haven’t had a bad experience with any of them. Although I’ve only gone on delta once, United twice, and American Airlines twice as well. The most recent one I went on was delta last year when I flew from back home from New York to Denver. I remember it being a comfortable flight. Right now, I’d have to safe my favorite airline is JetBlue. WiFi, movies, and comfortable seats, you can’t ask for much more. However, I have a lot of flying miles with southwest now, so for the foreseeable future I’ll use them, and I’ll have to see if the type for them is true.
My airline of choice: whichever is cheap and goes where I wanna go. lol
I've been flying on American this past year and they are my choice airline now. They bump me up to first class for free.
Oh, so it's YOU that we First Class passengers have to be forced to sit next to 😝
I got first class and they bumped me down
Nah they a trash 🗑
For the last 2-1/2 years I’ve taken delta mostly out of SFO and SJC. I have used American airline a few times and then United once. It really depends on who had the cheapest direct flight. SFO is a united hub and their flights seem to be reasonably priced when they fly into another United hub.
6:06 - The two airlines, Delta and Northwest both had a *triangle* in their logo.
Illuminati confirmed.
I've been flying Delta for years and will continue to fly Delta.
Thank you!
I've always flown Delta whenever i could for 34 years now and i never had an issue, caused by the airline, that couldn't be and wasn't solved.
I've been satisfied with the service whenever flying Delta.
Delta gets my vote any day.
Before the Continental/United merger you used to be able to go anywhere from Cleveland. Now it feels like every trip starts with connecting through Chicago.
I'm most familiar with United and their merger with Continental. I lived relatively close to Newark and usually flew Continental on family vacations. My dad also traveled extensively for work and flew them a lot. My grandfather was actually a pilot for United a long time ago, though no one in my family ever flew the pre-merger United during my lifetime. In my opinion, the merger did not go as smoothly as it could have. I remember one trip during the merger where our flight got cancelled out of nowhere at the last minute, and we had to drive to another airport to get home. The airlines essentially operated separately for several years after they received the single operating certificate. These issues were followed by several highly publicized customer service incidents, and really gave the airline a bad reputation. I think they are improving things now by focusing more on customer service and refurbishing all their aircraft cabins, including reintroducing seatback IFE.
Very interesting observation. Continental had a stellar reputation, but after the merger with United, that got trashed. I was concerned that the same would happen when US Airways (who I had flown exclusively) merged with American, because at the time, American had acquired a negative connotation. Happily, I have not seen a degradation, although I do tend to limit my connections, etc. to former US Airways cities.
I’ve actually had a mileage plus number from when I’ve flown continental as a child! I’m in my mid twenties now. I’m also closer to Newark so it was much easier
I was puzzled when you didn't mention anything about JetBlue. While I have not personally flown it...yet, I understand it's giving the flagship carriers some serious competition, especially regarding its Mint product, plus I've been given to understand that as of the first of the year, JetBlue is expanding into the overseas market, especially the lucrative(I guess you could call it that) market of LHR.
As for my favourite airline? It is hands down Delta. I am a crippled traveler, confined to a wheelchair. AA and UA treat me like I'm luggage to be to manhandled into the cargo hold. Delta treats me like a human being, and one that needs gentle handling at that. So thanks, I'll stick with Delta.
its incredible that there was once a big 9, but 6 have lost the war to the big 3
My parents and grandpa all worked for Continental as FAs/Pilot. Miss that airline.
Delta is the best one. There's no comparison anymore. They just took it on another level compared to AA and United.
Only AA for me, international I fly LH due to them having 747's otherwise I would use AA for that route also. AA has the only real First Class left in select domestic flights
Delta
Give me Southwest any day. No fees! Reasonable airfares. Their low fare calendar is awesome when trying to find the fare that works for you. Southwest leaves the others in the dust..... Of course if you are flying Int'l you will have to fly other carries. I wish we had a Qantas America! Qantas is my favorite carrier for Australia and NZ. Braniff was awesome. The big three you are talking about are, in my opinion, way too big!! Smaller companies are in order so they can give better service as opposed to what they have become. My two cents..J
The big 3 are basically ULCC in Designer Clothing unless you fly Business. They charge for everything now unless you pay to upgrade and it seems every couple of years they reduce the seat pitches in their new aircrafts.
I wish pan am still existed… although it would be a dive roll to see how they turned out, from basically a 4th mainline US carrier, to a small carrier in the Caribbean and South America, to them basically being an emirates / Qantas / BA for America.
United is my favorite!
United is the worst one, because well, look at their behavior...
@@Waddle_Dee_With_Internet If you're referring to the incident with the passenger getting dragged off, that flight was actually operated by Republic Airways and the dragging done by O'Hare Airport security staff. Republic operates flights for United Express, American Eagle, and Delta Connection. I'm not loyal to United or anything, but it is interesting that the worst hit to their reputation arose from the actions of a third party who does business with all of the Big Three. That lightning bolt could easily have nailed American or Delta. That said, I do think United handles flight booking, so the overbooking is on them. Whether United overbooks more than the others, I don't know. Pretty much all airlines overbook to one degree or another.
Delta was ranked the best airline in the US since 2017, and was also ranked the best for handling this Pandemic.
@@JETZcorp yeah I was talking about that too
I have, let’s just say some bad experience with them
Oh the irony of seeing “WhisperJet” on a 727, one of the loudest aircraft in history (Even with the hush kit installed)
Not sure if anyone pointed this out but with the CAL UA merger the CEO was from CAL
Jeff Smisek. Asshole ruined United
Great video, but United didn’t retain their CEO after their merger with Continental. Jeff Smisek came from Continental.
I like jetBlue mostly but Delta is pretty good as a runner up
JetBlues route network is a mess and constantly changing. They where my favorite a few year ago but now I would have to go out of my way to fly them. It's kinda a shame.
My first flight was with Jet Blue, I really enjoyed that flight and the staff were nice. My next flight was with American, it was pretty decent. I have heard good things about Southwest though..
One correction -- Delta started in Monroe, LA, then moved later to Atlanta. The name came from their crop dusting service over the Mississippi Delta...
Good to know Richard Hammond works for simple flying
Unless flying internationally, I almost exclusively fly Southwest. Their service is much friendlier, economy seats have more pitch, and free checked bags, nonexistent elsewhere in the industry, amount to a savings of over $100 each trip. Not to mention, their flexible cancellation policies are essential nowadays.
I am a huge Southwest fan, too :)
I like delta and american
Jetblue Southwest> United Delta American
i like southwest too, but their planes are kinda dumpy. dirty seats, no screens on the headrest, and no outlets to charge. also their routes kinda suck from where i live with a lack non stops. always a connection that adds a few more hours. no business class seats or lounges, and limited international presence
AAL's debt load is $42 billion and they have access to another $7 billion to draw on, for a total of $49 billion. They are contestant #1 on 'Who Choses Ch 11 First' in the near future.
Delta passed on the DC-10 (fortunately) and opted for L1011s the MD-11 replaces their aging Lockheed’s in the late ‘80s and ‘90s. Also Delta has the most cash reserves of the big 3, Better miles programs and higher rated customer experience among US carriers.
I am a delta diamond, I’m proud and i love delta but to say their mileage program is good is so stupid. Literally the only miles that you can’t redeem first class on partner airlines on. Not AF, GA, Korean, or MU.... meanwhile united can redeem on thai, ana, LH and even air china or american miles can be used for qantas if you’re lucky.
It all depends on how you account for things...financially. Besides, cash-on-hand means less these days as less people are flying and margins are slimmer than usual.
@@1234BaileyDavid simply put, AA and UA will file for bankruptcy is this continues much longer. DL is in far better position to withstand this for a longer period. They won't need to file.
You must be comparing Skypesos with Spirit's frequent flyer program because United's Mileageplus program is far superior, even after they have shit on it a few times in the past few years.
@Sky Honkler All airlines employ the same monetization tactics, not just United. Delta sells their miles to American Express and other vendors just like United does with Chase.
United is my favorite, Continental was my second favorite airline because I used to live in Guam which was a hub for both airlines
I Enjoy this Video.

I mostly fly the US carriers flying from Europe to Mexiko with a layover in the States. In my experience Delta has been much better than United. Plus ATL is a fantastic airport. I did fly United last year once again and it was a better experience than before. The layover in Chicago was bad, though.
With AA I haven't been a "normal" passenger yet. I've only flown with them on Stand-by because my uncle works there, so they always treated me quite well. DFW is also a very good airport.
Many years ago the US carriers have the big six: United, Delta, American, US Airways, Continental and Northwest Airlines.
Now it’s just the big three. How times have changed.
United has one of the best Frequent flier programs with the option to book a flight with a decent amount of miles all the others ask for a crazy amount of miles that unless you truly fly all the time you will never get to redeem those miles for a trip.
Two things to correct here:
1) US Airways acquired American Airlines; they just kept the AA branding since it made sense for them
2) United Airlines today is not actually United; while the merger (which is still happening at the grounds-level!) was mostly equal, it’s easier to say that Continental was the major shareholder (both branding and livery as well as top corporate heads came from CO), but keeping the name “United”. I still appreciated the United Airlines history.
I prefer southwest for domestic because of their free checked bags and choose your own seat. I think for international I prefer delta, but I also like the Dreamliner cabin. For current safety standards, I think southwest and delta are best in that they still aren’t filling middle seat.
i would choose delta bbc american's delays are like hdaehffwhfaga. and delta also flies to YYZ airport which is the nearest airport to me
The first to introduce the MD-11 was Finnair in dec 20, 1990.
My airline choice is AAL, as my dad flies for them and we get discounts.
#teamdelta
If I can, I fly Jetblue over the majors as the service is better however, where they aren't available, I typically fly American for 2 reasons, I am a Qantas frequent flyer so the points go back to them and the last time I flew Delta, I stood at JFK for 2 hours waiting for my bags to come off the flight.
For me its 1. Delta 2. United 3. American
but on a side note if I can fly Alaska I usually always do especially being based out of LAX. I love Alaska Air.
United, Southwest, Alaska, American. Delta does not make the list.
I usually fly on Delta Airlines which is one of my favorite airlines to fly on, I used to fly on United airlines until their prices got to high, but in terms of low cost airlines I usually fly with JetBlue which is my all time favorite low cost airline to fly on to certain destinations in the United States.
Give me American anytime 🥂!! I am from UK and we got here a big fan base for AA . Everytime when I fly from London I choose AA eventhough BA operates to the same destination. Classy agents and lovely Guest service in their Admiral clubs . I like AA lot .
BA these days is absolutely awful. If you're outside London, they barely serve the rest of the UK. Much prefer Air France and KLM.
US Airways bought American Airlines, not the reverse as stated in your video. (I see this mentioned in other comments as well) Prior to that little ol' America West had purchased USAir. In each case a decision was made to keep the name of the acquired carrier for it's better brand recognition. Evidence of all this is the fact that Doug Parker, CEO or America West then USAir, is now CEO of American Airlines. Amazing to think Parker engineered the transformation of America West into the world's largest airline.
