Dip It #9: Peppercorn Pepper Mill

- Peppercorns! I take whole black peppercorns and turn them into and antique pepper grinder. In the process I get a lesson in the aromatics of vaporizing peppers.
In the end, I feel as though my sinuses are quite thoroughly cleared out, and I have a strong desire to never put pepper on my food. Ever again...

Peter, I would like to personally apologize for jumping on the bandwagon earlier and suggesting this. Honestly, I seriously didn't think through how potent those pepper shavings would be.
On the bright side, you've now fully earned the title of a well seasoned veteran of woodturning.
Seriously, thanks again for these videos and taking our requests... even the really stupid ones.
“well-seasoned”... >:V
Oh god that is dad joke and a half
This joke is four years old just got a genuine out loud laugh.
Alright that was pepper. On to the cinnamon
Agreed
Oh that"s just mean.....I like it.
Peter don't do it, you have a family
Poor dude, you are so mean :P
Chili powder?
Make a clock face out of thyme. (Jeeze, this is a horrible joke.)
bwhahahahaha....I want one...that would be super cool!
i like this one
yes please!
BrokenLifeCycle yep.
I'll second (though technically fifth) Brokenlifecycle's suggestion.
Remove bubbles by placing a sheet sander upside down (obviously with no sand paper on it) then allow the vibration to shake the bubbles to the surface. The same trick works for removing bubbles from concrete moulds. Place a sander against it and the vibration will shake all the bubbles free. With this you would obviously need to stabilize the cup tho.
Good idea. Another way you could do it at latest in this situation is if you have a shopvac with ruffly the same size hose as the cup. Just align the hose with the opening of the cup then turn on the shop vac, but that might just crush the cup. Idk
not with the flexible cup he was using. the external pressure being put on the cup would bend and warp it a lot.
Another simple way that many people might have is a air compressor and pressure cooker pot. Just make a simple modification to add pressure blow off valve and quick connect. High pressure in container will make bubbles shrink ultra small. Just keep blow off valve set psi to pressure cooker pot rating for safety.
could tdo that with a magic wand
"I'm weaponizing pepper!" 😂😂😂
new to this channel and I've been binge watching all night! love it ♡
I know nothing about woodworking or anything like this... But i still love watching these lol
Same
Me three.
I just love the creativity of it. There might be others out there who are creative like him but I do love how he does things and how he is so there is no reason for me to watch others.
FOUR!
I'm five
me to (:
I guess we can say "you are a seasoned professional" eh?
Cool looking project Peter, keep dipping!
way to take one for the team
thanks!
Do cinnamon now
i wanted to say that!
Right to the face.....
+Cerium Doge cinnamon will be almost as bad as the pepper because it has some of the same heat properties!!
i gave a like out of pity for the man. pepper spray aint no joke!
thank you kind stranger!
Well now i had to subscribe for the customer service!
If it makes you feel better I willingly choose to eat it
yeah well its also a different pepper.
That stuff must be absolutely miserable to work with! How about something with haberneros, or maybe ghost peppers? :)
Achoo!
@@hypnotkhaze5157 bless you!
@@faroshscaleHaha, glad to see there is still some friendly humor on the site. :)
xFearlessYoshi
I guess you havent been in the right places then :)
Model making/Dioramas/Painting guides and train dioramas/scenery all have lots of humour too.
(Less dangerous tho), excluding the minidrills and resins
Not any less expensive tho.. airbrush/paints/ etc cost around the same in the longer run.
The peppercorn spots make it look like a weird dalek.
"Dalek voice* Your. Pepper mill would. Make a. Gooood. Daaaalek.

Davetheknave2301 you make that sound like a BAD thing....lol

Ya know what I want to see next? Dip it #10: Hammer. Like a regular claw hammer, dipped in resin to turn it into a mallet.
I think it'd be cool!
I used polyurethane resin a few years ago to make jewellery and I found that if you LIGHTLY tap your mould on a flat surface as you are pouring your resin in the bubbles will naturally rise to the top where you can pop them with a pin or something similar (most of the time I just left them to pop by themselves). I have found this a very reliable procedure in everything I have made even when making things like plaster moulds they've always turned out perfect. Hope this helps 😅😁🤗
* Pepper burns to the face *
* Also almost dies from hacking up a lung *
“I think I can be honest. This probably wasn’t my favorite project.”
''we have a one inch hole.''
wow. all of us?
thank you, im here all night
*claps*
You said hole😂

😂
"I'm weaponising pepper" hahaha, brilliant!
Can you do a dip with ramen noodles?
Ramen Noodles!!!!!!
Ramen spatula
ramen fork handle.
Ramen ramen bowl
Sebastian Huth ramen chopsticks
Man I called it on the sneezing but did not think about the pepper spray aspect of it.
me either!
+Peter Brown do cinnamon now plz
+Sam Amberson that would be even worse for turning
THANK YOU for showing us how NOT to use a vacuum chamber!!! I'm on a budget! Your videos are the best!
You should try to capture liquid in a resin "bubble" of some sort not very practical but it might look cool
I cannot convey the many hours I have wasted on this. Someday I will figure it out....
+Peter Brown Have you seen how they make the iceball cocktails? I don't know too much about resin but you might be able to do it this way then seal up the hole with more resin or maybe try sculpting a sphere out of silicone putty (this might be considered cheating) and filling it with liquid? Sorry for the long comment, I can't wait for the video when you figure this out!
Catness Twig downside to this is most liquids actually inhibit resin curing!
Catness Twig. Yeeessss
Look up "spherification". It may not be quite what you're looking for, but it's definitely a viable way to keep a liquid in form without temperature being an issue. Also forms perfect spheres, which would look cool.
Your workshop is now ... well seasoned. c:
:D good joke im being honest
Someone had to😂
We need Sunglasses Horatio here for this pun xD
n i c e
Glad you guys enjoyed my pun c:
It would be really cool to dip broken up CDs, so you could see all the rainbow from the underside of the disc through the resin.
3:11 His face gets all sweaty
Hands dusty
Arms heavy
He's vomiting on his peppercorn already
*M O M ' S S P A G H E T T I*
Noeru Parisu I
Lol
"He opens his mouth but peppercorns wont come out..."
Thank you for your brave sacrifice Peter, we all appreciate it!
If you took this, and then dipped it I another cup of resin so the whole thing was incased in resin again, then turn it one more time, you would have a smooth finish, and would be left with an encapsulating layer of resin that you could polish smooth. If that makes sense...
Brady Nuss i know your comment was a year ago but genius!
Another way to do that but way way easier is to just brush some resin on top instead of dipping it
Dip it #10: make a sword out of a necktie! It's the perfect shape for a sword, and you can grind it sharp!
ooooooo, YES
10/10
omg good idea pls pls pls pls dooo it
but you cant grind it sharp, havent you seen his epoxy knife video??????
+Jeb it doesn't have to be razor sharp, just the process and the finished product would be nice to see in my opinion, it's Peter Brown, he'll figure it out ;)
Do you think you could dip cotton candy or do you think it would just melt?..these are the thoughts that plague me at night..
Oooooo that would look so cool if it worked!!
I don't think the epoxy has water so it might not dissolve. But it would crush it probably. Cool idea!
I think it would just melt
+Peter Brown It might be an idea to apply a finishing coat of epoxy in order to prevent the peppercorns from perishing
I was thinking the same thing, not that it would rot quickly but you're guaranteed to get pepper on the hands using it every time
"Which means, that my face now, feels like its on fire."
Love this show man.
I appreciate the dramatic irony you're giving us with these creations...
Good job Peter!
thanks!
it turned out so gorgeous. I'd love to have something like this.
Ouch, it's hot.....ouch, it's hot.....ouch, it's hot.....ouch, it's hot.....ouch, it's hot.....
Will he ever learn folks?
never...
Pepper spray is made from chili peppers, not peppercorns.
+VaraMahiesedotter lol
I'm a 14 year old boy who just found your videos, I subscribed and have watched many videos of yours. I love the creative and ironic ways you use different materials. Trust me, I love your woodcraft videos, but I love seeing things like this. Really cool idea with the peppercorn pepper shaker. Love your videos, keep it up, I'm sure I'm not the only one in my age group who loves your videos, even though we're not your general audience.
Peter, love your attitude to keeping things simple so others can attempt your projects or similar without needing expensive tools & machines. Far too many out there that show beautiful projects but use some machines that cost thousands. Those videos become boring pretty quickly. Keep up the good work for those of us that only have limited gear available.
Chili powder next?
Yes
And Trinidad scorpion after :)
Then Carolina reaper after that
djAnakin make the country of Chile out of Chili
I have a huge collection of rubber ducks (about 450 and counting) and I'd love to see you do something in the shape of, or incorporating rubber ducks. Maybe a resin "rubber ducky" with something inside? It'd be super-cool if it were a skeleton, but that would be morbid, but something...
thats a lot of rubber dicks
nimbuzz Yup!
+nimbuzz I get the feeling that that was an intentional misspelling.
A friend of my Dad made a mold from a rubber duck and made concrete ducks, they're pretty neat!
h3rteby That's awesome! I had some friends make one on a 3D printer, which was also pretty cool.
When you run out of pepper in the grinder, just sand a bit of the handle! How genius is that? Good job Peter!
mmm love me some resin-seasoned foodstuffs
i hear it's a popular ingredient amongst those who grew up ingesting lead
i appreciate that you do your crafts with the low income people in mind i am disabled and got a lathe for christmas (best gift ever) and love working with resin
Dude, kudos to you for even thinking of doing this, let alone following through! All that pepper dust must be awful and yet you still have a lovely looking piece!
I regards to using a vacuum chamber; in my works we have these large water-cooled transformers that I repair and once the coils are fixed and fully prepared I cast them in a block of araldite to help protect the coils and provide electrical insulation. One of the problems is of course the gosh-darned bubbles, and we don't have a vacuum chamber large enough to help remove them. What I've taken to doing instead is cutting a hole in a piece of stiff plastic and fitting the nozzle of a normal household vacuum cleaner through it and roughly sealing with tape. I then apply the plastic sheet to the mouth of the mold and turn the vacuum on. The force of this pulls the plastic flush to the sides of the mold, so don't worry too much about sealing the edges, and although it's nowhere near a true vacuum it still has a similar effect in removing the bubbles and pulling araldite into every nook and cranny. The biggest problem of course is that the mold has to be tall enough that your vacuum cleaner nozzle is not touching the liquid! I find this an effective way to get an even, solid fill, even around complicated shapes with lots of twists, turns and complicated shapes.
Not sure if it'll be the perfect solution for everyone but it's certainly a cheap and easy way to help without industrial level tools.
how about a lamp made of matchsticks ?
match sticks would be cool
yes
Nice idea but when the buld gets really hot your lamp will burst in to flames.
Melle Haanen most matchsticks nowadays only ignite by friction.
people mostly use energy efficient bulbs. CFL (compact fluorescent light) have a maximum of around 20w. LED bulbs are around 18w. Neither would get hot enough to ignite a match.
People use matchsticks to make model cars, ships etc all the time.
Or you could just cut the fire starting bit off?
Nicola Gregson well, good point.
Pepper spray is made from concentrated capsaicin, the chemical that gives the sensation we know as spicy. Peppercorns, on the other hand, do not contain this chemical. In fact, peppers, as in chili peppers, were named after peppercorns because capsaicin has a similar flavor to peppercorns despite being caused by different chemicals.
Interesting!
What confuses me even further then, is that when I put chili powder in a recipe I'm making, it doesn't seem to taste spicy. Black pepper, on the other hand, does make it taste spicy. At least to me. That's strange.
@@JoDidntHearYou If you eat a lot of peppers or spicy foods containing peppers, it could be that you have an acquired tolerance to the effects of capsaicin, while not having the same tolerance to piperine, the chemical in black pepper that gives it its kick. Piperine is about 1/100th as spicy as capsaicin, but peppercorns are 5-9% piperine by weight, while the most common chili peppers vary from anywhere from .01%-6% capsaicin, and are usually diluted much further in chili powder, while peppercorns are eaten raw. Given that chili powders generally have a Scoville rating of around 500 (very, very low), I'd say it's not hard to imagine there being at least 100x more piperine in ground black pepper than there is capsaicin in chili powder, which would make it hotter than chili powder, especially for someone who's used to consuming a lot of capsaicin but not a lot of piperine.
Brian Bethea I love that it’s 3 years later and I just got the notification that you responded to my comment. Thanks for the insight!
What about gummi bears, wonder if that would work.
you could make it like stained glass, it'd look cool with sunlight coming through.
Axe handle
I'm going back through your videos and love that you explain why you don't use a vacuum chamber, etc. It's appreciated.
Suffering for one's art. Respect.
Very cool! How about an onion ;)
something with flowers would be interesting ❤
I'm sure he would appreciate that after the pepper! I watched another youtube video somewhere about how to make rose aromatic extract or something, and it mentioned you can get petals from a florist for cheap/free. Dip it with rose petals would be lovely.
EDIT: It was an Alton Brown video on baklava, and he showed how to make your own "rose water".
why stop at peppercorn? Do garlic, oregano, coriander, I want an entire plate of cuisine in epoxy.
DrunkenRobot garlic would rot
You make BY FAR some of the most CREATIVE, BEAUTIFUL, INVENTIVE things I've ever seen!! You're an artist as well as a genius sir. I love your work and I am now a huge fan of your videos! 😊😘
I just found this channel a couple days ago, and I'm in love. Your projects are so fun to watch, and your personality just adds to the charm. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us!
I think this would look very cool with the multi colored pepper since it has white red and black!! You should try that next!!!
Those are extremely expensive commodities. For that size? Maybe £30
Dip It #10: Chilli powder
dude that would be hell to spib
*spin
Make a wooden doorknob
grats on 250k
thanks!
the little wooden handle looks like it can easily unscrew, can you make a peppercorn handle?
you should make a salt mill out of salt now
you can make a vacuum chamber from an old fridge pump, basically free if ones on the road side, they work great
Will the exposed sections of pepper rot?
you should use bb bullets dipped in epoxy
Hi Peter, will you put an insect in the resin. Like a dead dragon fly or butterfly.. i got the idea from Jurassic Park, ive always thought it would be pretty cool & if you had a magnifying glass it would be good to see it up close 😊 just an idea
SO GORGEOUS PETER!!!!!!!!!!!!! I absolutely loved this dip it!!!! Thank you so much for all you do!!
The part about the vacuum chamber was kinda inspirational...slowly wiping tear from eye.
make something with playing cards like a table top
yes!!
yes omg yes please
Thanks for the idea!
+Peter Brown no problem. I just love card art and thought it would look cool.
indeed needs to be done
make a bowl out of serial and resin
A cereal bowl made of cereal lol
+EndOfOurDays exactly!
Is there resin safe for food
+EndOfOurDays I have no clue
you might be able to seal it in something that is if it isn't (and he just used it to make a peppermill, so i doubt it's that poisonous)
So is it safe to assume that pepper has replaced salt on top of the all time most hated things to work with
I appreciate the sacrifice you have made.
Peter is such a pure person
Should you clear coat it? wouldn't the exposed peppercorns mold?
if you can't buy a vacuum chamber then show use how to make one Mr.Brown
How about something with fruit? .... Citrus? A pitcher made with Lemons and Limes and Oranges!
John Gallop the only problem with that might be that those are fresh non-preserved foods!! They might rot!!
I basically just spent 7 minutes watching you mace yourself for a home project. Incredible.
This might be my favorite one. It reminds me of something from rustic days
Maybe find away to do something with marbles...
Hey Peter I was wondering... Would It be possible to do like a double dip? Make a rough shape with the peppercorns and then, after the resin is hardened, dip it again and work with that dip so when you grind away you don't grind away the peppercorns? sorry if this made no sense :/
dip cereal and make it into a cereal bowl
YASSSSS Cheerios would look so cool!
prophecy
My wife and I enjoyed this episode a lot LOL thanks!
I stumbled upon this channel accidentally and have literally sat all day watching every single video. Amazing channel dude
Sooo, not a great advertisement for those dust masks then.
Will you place flowers in epoxy and turn them into a stand of some sort?
+Minister HaxAras Royal yes! A vase would be wonderful!
Homemade vacuum chamber.
I thought the same. a wooden box with a layer of resin inside to make airtight. a reinforced resin top with something inside to reinforce it, a rubber gasket attached to the top and a shop vac. may not be 'perfect but I think that could work for smaller items
Awesome build, I could feel the pepper up nose as you turned!!
Cool project Peter! Thanks for what you do and for sharing it with us.
Make some sort of plate/stand by dipping a whole pizza.
yess
I third that!
Yes nice idea
Lets make it happen
Dip It #10: Carolina Reaper shot glass
Shot glass with a tequila worm in the bottom.
Shot glass with an eyeball on the bottom looking up.
Shot glass with a fly in the bottom!
Shot glass with a quarter on the bottom! Somebody stop me. I need help.
I'd like to see what can be created with rubber bouncy balls.
great name
Thanks lad
Krombopulos Michael i have a guy i dont like. How much will it be?
For decades I made pepper jelly for Christmas gifts. Due to allergies I had to wear a breathing mask, face shield, long sleeves and at least 4 layers of gloves - + have lots of ventilation. Just the oils from various peppers touching my skin would cause whelps. My allergies became more of an issue so I ceased that tradition. (I even moved my setup outdoors hoping to be able to continue but was not successful.) Viewing your video reminded me of that discomfort. You had to be miserable, you truly appeared to have a sunburn on your face. I admire your determination to complete the video in spite of your discomfort.
Peter, you should make a video looking back on some of your older projects. That would be awesome.
Wood shavings in epoxy and make a box out of it
What if you make it so the peppercorns are in the middle, floating instead of exposed?
HanyouxFromxHell I think it will look like his coffee bean handle thing (cannot remember what it actually turned into) but it wasn't the best, he re-did it recently
coffee press. i think it'd look better, since they're black/grey pellets.
Make cinnamon tablespoon
It's a beautiful finished project! I really enjoy seeing the transformation. I totally laughed when you got the pepper spray thing. so funny!
The Pepper mill turned out awesome.
Can you make something guitar related?
You must really like us. I wouldn't do peppers. I don't enjoy my face on fire.
dip glitter
Lashay Taylor Holo glitter
Beautiful video, Peter.
The is great, as a pepper mill has hardly anyone.
Because the bubble that gets you possibly with a Ozillierenden sander (Fein, etc.) or orbital sander.
I really like the way that grinder looks
On to cinnamon
love Peter's ideas and creativeness
Try making something out of Carolina Reaper :-)
Do you want to kill him
+Stranded Panda Studios Would it be bad to say yes? ( ͡°╭͜ʖ╮͡° )
No Mad hatter it wouldnt
Then don't do a ghost pepper or stronger you'll die. Cuz I didn't wash hands good enough and took a bath I had to bathe blind.
What he does for our entertainment. Top chap
talk about suffering for your art, you excelled on this project. It's beautiful!
