  • What do you get when you cross a 5 lb bag of gummy bears, 13 oz of resin, and a wicked sharp double axe head? Sounds to me like a really bad idea...
    I love it. I had many "firsts" in this project, but I can say I'm happy as can be that the gummy bear axe now exists. Also, pretty happy to add this to the completed project column.

Just so you guys know, that way you don’t go out and spend heaps on a bag of gummies when you could spend little on making your own which looks pretty easy.

    While it would be a lot more tedious i feel like finding some way to make resin gummy bears in bulk and then breaking them apart and holding them together like you did with the real gummy bears could make for a much sturdier handle with pretty much the same effect

    • @hollt693
      @hollt693 6 лет назад +8

      That's exactly what I was thinking! You can get silicone gummy bear molds for cheap all over the net (a.co/3LkshRv ). Add a little dye to the resin and you're in business! Not only would it not gum up when sanding, but it would also produce a much stronger handle overall.

    I agree with some of the comments on using plastic or resin gummy bears, but also sanding and coating the handle in polyurethane would have probably been a good idea too. Sheets of acrylic and hot glue would have been a good mold form as well and more stable, and if you wanted to get real fancy you could use monster clay or any clay that doesn’t cure and make a two part mold.
    But coming back to watch this after your giant magnifying glass is so fun. You’ve come a LONG way Peter, and you’re one of the people who got me excited for resin and wood working. So thank you for being an inspiration, hun. Also, I bought micro mesh because of you and I love it!

    Love your idea and beautiful looking. I've worked with resin and fibreglass for around 45 years with boats and surfboards and the biggest problem with only using resin on it's own is that it's extremely brittle. To get more strength into resin for something that has a big impact like an axe it would be best to have 5-10 layers of fibreglass. The webbing gives you lateral and vertical strength. Hope this helps, regards from Paul in Salisbury East, South Australia.

    The way you handle this situation is by having two molds. in the first u do your regular pouring. This one is smaller than the final shape. The second is bigger. You put the thing you cast in the first mold (I would take it out before fully curing, just solid enough to take it off), then you use only resin on it to make a sandable outter shell and avoid exposing weak points (which the gummy bears are).
