Making A Pen Out Of Paper
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 сен 2024
- Micarta is made from layers of paper or fabric and resin. This pen is actually made out of paper. 20 layers of cardstock cut into 1" squares and then glued into a pen blank.
It was then turned on the wood lathe and assembled into a pen kit. I love the colors, the material and having a useful item that started it's life as paper...

I don't know about you guys, but I'd like to see those "confetti" shavings turning into a knife handle!
That would be cool.
...ever heard of kiwami japan?
@@lilmelon5400 no
Recycle the shavings and put it in resin and make a cake cutter handle. Very festive. Or maybe a confetti wine bottle opener.
That's cool! YOu should try dipping Honey Comb in resin, and making some sort of knife scale. That would be so rad!
honey comb or a wasps nest would be cool. Very cool patterns
Create Something yoooooooooo that would be so so so cool
I agree omg!!
It's a cool pattern to be sure, but the problem is that the wax might melt during the curing process, or you might just end up with something really transparent.
imwithstupid086 ohhh thats a good point
Use the micarta shavings for a dip it pen.
great idea
Use it to throw a party
I have made pens out of paper before. Usually it was when I only had an ink cartridge left in my pencil case. I rolled A4 paper around the ink cartridge and then taped it down at the end.
Yours is a little fancier though I guess :p
lol
lmao. thats exactly what i was thinking when i read the title of this video. those were the days man... in college I barely have any use for a pen with all this tech.
aljowen school educates us in the least likely ways huh
When I was younger I lived in an apartment complex where this guy was always gluing and pressing cardboard together then using that in the same way one would use wood to build furniture. I remember he made a giant dresser shaped like Gumby that had a fish tank built into it. Your work reminds me a lot of that period. The micarta technique is really cool and I think it would be a perfect fit for pressing skateboard decks. Try looking at some real decks in a skateshop and try making one with micarta. I think it could turn out really well.
What about a shovel/spade made out of dirt and resin?
Remember the gummy bear axe? Just as strong...
The gummy bear axe didn't work out because:
1. Resin itself just isn't strong enough (or at least I don't think so), and there were lots of pockets of nothing but resin
2. Gummies aren't a very strong material (that we can agree on) and they took up a lot of the volume of the handle, sometimes with not enough resin between them.
Dirt and resin _could_ work somewhat like cement, if mixed together very well. Usually the smaller the particles, and the less space between them (filled with resin) the better, so it might just work. At least for the handle, the actual diggy bit made of dirt and resin probably wouldn't withstand the erosion of digging into dirt.
B0NEZ
It sure might be doable as an object - but as a working tool for intended use, i doubt it. :)
A shovel might have some actual structural rigidity if the dirt is supplemented or completely replaced with fibrous plant compost. But even then - as you mentioned - the lifetime would be short.
+BONEZ A cement axe/spade handle wouldn't work very well, either, though.
Mix in some plant fibers.
A small shovel, like what you would use for potting plants, would be totally doable. Make the blade a bit thicker than usual, and it would be at least as good as the plastic garden shovels that you can buy. Maybe do this as a C-mas gift for Mrs. Brown.
I actually have no knowledge of woodworking or anything of the sort but I'm obsessed with these videos.
I'd love to see this micarta turned on an angle, so you get more interesting color transitions. I get the feeling it might be difficult to turn, though.
Laynie Fingers the shavings from the turning would be cool too
I'm reminded of a frank howarth segmented bowl with a chevron pattern; how one section of the chevron pattern was made could be done with micarta for that angled look. (Of course, it can also be squared before being turned.)
An angle plate would allow drilling the blank at an angle.
That would allow the blank to be turned on the bias, creating the color transitions you describe.
This is one of those videos where I thought "crap, I wish this was my idea"! Love it! Beautiful confetti and beautiful pen!
Thanks David! I'm just glad the mess was an easy cleanup this time!
Next Dip-It uses the micarta shavings. You must be over your resin budget by now.
YESSSSSSSSS
I am! But art resin sent me some to try out, so that will be next... :)
You should make something out of old vinyl records. My dad has a whole lot of old ones that he doesn't want if you need them
Very nice project, i love micarta...
The vaccum sucking up all the strings while turning was awesome
"Micarta is a fun material." he says as he remembers all of the pain and woe that went into creating the micarta blanks...
I love watching this channel laying in bed with no intent to move or make a sandwich let alone anything like this, but I just love it and find it so satisfying, I really don't why?! But I love your channel Peter, you're very good at all you do! 😊
thank you Sian!
Sian Pursglove I see you like demolition ranch
You should make another pen/project where the layers of micarta are angled relative to the turning axis, so that you get more interesting patterns than just concentric circles. You could also purposefully deform the original sheet of micarta (like a wavy pattern or something) so that when you plane it, the layers of paper/whatever look like Damascus steel.
Can we talk about how he got number 39 on trending! Nice job Peter!
Shoot, now that he's mainstream, quality's probably gonna go down ... sigh
quality has been down for a while... :)
Paul Vanukoff kkk
This video speaks to me because my dad use to make a lot of pens before he got very sick I still have his drawer full of pens parts and blanks
sorry to hear that. Pen turning can be a lot of fun, it's super addicting.
PLEASE make a clipboard out of the shavings and resin! That would be an outstanding combo.
make a pen out of (recycled) pens
WhoLock no make a pen out of pencils
or pencil out of pens
Penception
And then pen out of pen out of pen
@@YungDaggerYarak you're going too deep man! Be careful you might never come back
it's surprising how beautiful paper can be. I love how you took something we usually make art on and turned it itself into a little piece of art.
A beautiful looking pen!
I'd love to see something made out of glitter (or sequins) suspended in resin. The chunky kind of glitter that is fairly transparent (apart from a holographic/iridescent sheen) would look really cool I think :)
Dear Peter,
I have been following your channel for about a year, and i would like to say, you are one of my favorite you-tubers around. Your crafts amazes me in ways that i thought only a machine can do.
Please, keep doing what you're doing. And i can't wait for your next project.
Cheers!
Amir (from Malaysia)
do a dip it with the shavings!!!
Jordan Smithson yess
Ooh! Ooh! I have an idea! Make a complete scrabble set (including the pieces, tile holder, and game board) out of the materials you use frequently like wood, resin, epoxy, micarta, polyurethane, etc.
You could make Braille Skateboarding a set of wheels! You could pull that off easily too!!!! That would be awesome.
Oh baby! That close up shot was so smooth. Probably the most satisfying thing I've watched all week.
Damn it Peter! I'm supposed to be fixing my toilet right now...
Sorry! Thanks for wasting time with me instead!
You are oh so totally welcome but next tine think of other peoples schedules before posting amazingly interesting content sir!!! :P
Peter, I've come to get so excited every time I see a new video from you in my feed. From someone who works in the 'high-fashion' clothing industry where everything I patternmake seems very disposable season to season, it's a pleasure to see you experiment with unique materials to create lasting products. Yet, your accepting attitude toward the often fallible nature of experimentation (things blowing up into hundreds of pieces) is quite inspiring - definitely motivating! It's very true that few things work first time, or last forever, but it is the excitement and the experience of experimentation that really matters! Stay creative, we love it.
Wow, micarta is really cool. Pen looks great. How well do you think sheets of that would do on the scroll saw?
It works but because it is so hard better take it slow. And use saw blades for metal.
Thanks for the advice.
I was planning on making a scroll saw project with the original blank. I think cutting it at a steep angle would look really cool.
Peter Brown That would be neat. It would be pretty trippy on the eyes too. I wonder how well it would work if it was made thinner. I have a few projects in mind that I need some super thin material for (less than 1/8"). I may have to give it a whirl some time. Thanks for the inspiration.
Waylight Creations
I know the relationship of micarta and scroll saw mainly from cutting selfmade circuitboards to shape. Those are typically 1.5mm thick but astonishingly sturdy. They also are not that expensive so maybe worth a try to test something easier to get than the selfmade stuff.
Really all we need in life is some epoxy and a lathe! Keep on the awesome work, Peter, you're inspiring.
I loved the pattern ya got on that blank but I would've loved to see a blank made with the grain running in the long direction since it wouldve had a pretty cool "colored wood grain" look to it after it was rounded off. still super cool
Love the new Rockler stuff!
didn't think the dust collection for the lathe would work so well!
A candle holder with drilled holes to beam the light through, this could be a good idea for the lamps idea suggested.
Love this concept! A pen, made from paper, for writing on paper! Genius! Keep up the awesome! Can't wait to see another Dip-it!
Awesome video as always! The little square pieces looked so satisfying for some reason.
Oh, rainBOWs! Yeah, I like those.
So with all those kits, do you think you'll make a GLITTER pen?
Letting glitter loose in his workshop? I don't wish him that ill.
Glitter pen blanks are common, but in my opinion turn terribly
King Harkinian Not worth releasing the infection that is glitter, in other words.
The thing is, I left a comment that semi-seriously asked to see him make a glitter blank, and given his reply, it sounds as though he's going to risk making one... eventually.
AvenRox I've made one, but Im not same person from this video.
Nice job. The streamer coming off the pen going straight into the dust collector looks really cool.
Turned out really neat!
no pun intended?
I’m not stalking you. I promise
i made my first pen yesterday, and its 100% because of this channel. the body is 3d printed then sanded to 12000 grit to make the plastic super shiny and pretty. ♥ i plan to make many more.
ALL TEH CONFETTI!
HA!
Serious moment... you actually made money from making pens?? I would have thought the cost of the pen kit and sanity of turning something that thin wouldn't have been outweighed enough by the profit?
I sold most of my pens between $20 - $60. I would go into local gift shops and sell 10 at a time to the shop owner with a holder. Then I would restock them as they sold them. I also sold bottle stoppers and boxes, but mostly pens.
Can I be of the economic class that can afford a $60 pen, please??
i have literally no idea what youre doing but your videos make me calm and help with anxiety so thank you!!
Yo that little vacuum thing is lit
Micarta with jeans as a basic looks super amazing
damnit saw this notification for this video clicked it immediately, I love your videos Peter
thank you Aden!
Aden Cox same as soon as I saw it!!
Peter Brown make a multi colour resent phone case
Peter Brown no Peter, thank you, if someone said I could only watch one channel, it would be yours.
mndi89 because you can make more money on RUclips these days haha tv is dead
I am bing watching your channel. I have no intention on making these things, just find the turning satisfying to watch. Love your creative ideas.
I would 100% purchase one of these. Fine work! Also, I may have a new material for you! I've been saving the foil wrappings from chocolate for a long time now hoping to find a project. I think you could do them justice.
putting the vacuum behind while you're turning is genius!
Would it be possible to make a pen out of a pineapple... and an apple?
Seriously, though, you could probably make some nice blanks out of oven-dried or freeze-dried fruit.
Nathan Ware omg yes plz make it plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz plz😭
Nathan Ware this has got to happen
christ
Micarta sounds like a band I would actually go see. Peter and The Micartas.
Peter Brown, I have been watching you for awhile and I really enjoy your content. I was wondering if you could do a project with a reflective surface for example a mirror.
Sure. Did you have an idea for a project?
Peter Brown maybe a lamp or something?
Peter Brown Maybe something that is seasonal? I am British but I hear in America thanksgivings is coming up. However I do enjoy the home decor videos so maybe a picture fame and the fame be a mirror?
Marcus Octavius I like the idea of that.
A funneled lamp? mirrors turned in on the shade, like the reflectors on a headlight? focus and cast light upwards, rather than omnidirectionally?
A wood pen was the first thing I've ever turned and that was in February, I have fallen in love with turning and it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.
Funny, I started learning how to make paper beads a week ago!
The process is definitely different though.
Paper beads are so much fun to make! What kind of paper do you like to use the most? Which glue? I love using basic magazines and Mod Podge Gloss, especially magazines like Victoria or National Geographic because the pictures have such great vibrancy and there are more pages with pictures on them.
Yet another wonderful colorful video. I clicked as soon as I saw the rainbow! : ) Thanks Peter!
That turned out awesome Peter! Great idea using micarta for a pen, never really heard of it before. Got me thinking of all kinds of projects that would be cool with that material
I think you would like this material a lot! A little tedious to make the blanks though...
Well, it's worth trying out for sure. I was thinking about going with denim for the layers
Wow, Zac Higgins and Peter Brown, my 2 favorite Dunk'in and Dip'in channels!! you guys should get together on a project.
Yes!! I like your style :-) I think we'd have to come up with a really killer project where the differences in Alumilite and Epoxy/PR can be showcased a bit. That would be fun!
I find your videos absolutely delightful. I have watched every one for over a year, and you kindle my love of woodworking. Keep up the awesomeness.
Can I borrow your pen?
May*
@@Griseb4nk your wright about that .
Mike Hostetler you’re*
@@Griseb4nk I also said wright instead of right.
Mike Hostetler yeah i know, i that much of a grammar nazi
Ive never really thought about how pen turning can be a thing, it looks really fun and I may have a go at making some pens myself!
Now make a piece of paper out of old pens :^)
Really glad your micarta "experimentation" is paying off! Beautiful pen
Very cool project Peter. Puts me in mind of a stacked leather knife handle, perhaps stacked leather would make a good pen blank ! Cheers, Jim
I think leather would make a cool pen. And it should be easier to turn too!
Peter Brown was thinking the same thing myself as soon as I saw the stacked squares. should be easy to punch out using a a large punch die
Peter Brown was thinking the same thing myself as soon as I saw the stacked squares. should be easy to punch out using a a large punch die. great work
You should try a Milliput pen, now that would be cool!!
I'm glad that such a beautiful project came out of a material that gave you so much trouble! Great job!
Can you make a pen pineapple apple pen?
Shinijon Kimi Good idea!
Out of what? Wood? Paper?
Ejje out of pineapple and- WAIT FOR IT!- apple
Shinijon Kimi That would actually make sense, EXCCEEPPTTTTTTT they'd go rotten, unless they like freeze in resin or something.
+Ejje you sir deserve a cookie!
those micarta shaings suspended in resin would make a really unique looking pen think- clear resin with rainbow micarta over the brass insert- AWESOME!!
hey peter, you should try making another skateboard for the Braille channel, but out of micarta
I think a micarta skateboard would totally hold up!
Thats a nice idea :)
it would! i would recommend maybe even getting a real skateboard to create a mould for laying up the micarta, that way you get a perfect tip and tail shape, as well as the horizontal concave of the board
Never going to make on myself but for some reason I found it enjoyable to watch you create one .
That's brilliant. It looks like a lollipop. And NO FAILURES?! What is happening!!
So satisfying watching the shavings going up the vacuum
Hey peter, what about trying to deep an entire pizza, and make a plate out of it,,, and make it pepperoni of course!!!!
Thanks for the awesome videos. This might be an amazing way to get my daughters into wood turning. Using paper to make pens and other items. Have a blessed week.
make something out of the confetti please
like a coaster
Myah Chambers I think a clipboard would make for an awesome combo.
Myah Chambers love the micarta clipboard dip it idea!
or a dip it pen stand with the confetti
I love your safety shoes while you are turning! Very nice pen.
it'coming into Dec here in Ca, so I *might* have to switch to close toed shoes.... :)
Rick Dearmont 😂😂my bf does the same thing.
Make a pen pineapple apple pen
Imagine paper thin layers of dried apple and pineapple epoxied together and made into a pen. XDDDD
Omg I would love to see those pretty shavings in resin!!!
can you make something with baby crystal ?? anything.. i really want see it.. and i want make it to ☺
I tired. They're too wet and the resin won't cure. Too bad...
ouhh sorry I disturb you, I just want to learn to do something, if you have the time, I hope you do something with bubble gum .. if you can not do it, its okay ..
You're not disturbing me! Fire away! :)
okay, i understand .. thanks
make the squares 4" and cut on an angle of 10 deg and that would be an awesome look. thought the ends would blow out , great job Peter!
can you make a sonic screwdriver, that works on screws, still?
As something of a writer, I really approve of this ^_^
Making a pen out of paper plus with tons other different material that you need
There is a steep curve for getting into pen turning. So many specialized tools...
that turned out really cool , u should do yellow and black call it the bumblebee
Dip it: a banana phone case.

Watching your vids makes me so nostalgic for when I was younger and would watch woodcraft shows with my dad and grandpa. Keep up the good work my dude!
Rockler should carry some cardstock for your viewers and as a joke. XD
haha! That would be awesome...
I love watching the sanding process and how gorgeous it gets x)
Why not a milliput pen?
That would be very cool looking!
I'm obsessed with your videos, I wish you would post more.
Peter, did you see the pen that was made of cardboard? I saw it on Instructables a few weeks ago. Super cool!
I did see that. He posted it to reddit.com/r/turning. A place I frequent!
Peter Brown Great job and do you still sell them
so peter might be a really stupid question but would it be possible to turn glass
Thanks for including the link to the Micarta making video.
You should try to make a brush handle out of hair and epoxy.
Man it's so retro looking!
What do you do with all your left over materials you don't use?
I put it all in a bankers box. That is honestly quite full right now...
Peter Brown You should do a video showing it and ask for project suggestions using some of them.
Hi Peter, i just wanted to thank you because i really enjoy your videos and ive been having a hard time lately and your videos are a good escape. I know you probably wont see my comment but i wanted to say I love your projects, and your humor, so keep doing what youre doing because i will be here watching!
How about a pineapple pen?!
Pineapple?
Peter Brown search this on youtube "apple pen " you'll get it
I watch your videos because it's calming to watch you work on the spinning machine and you are just fun to watch :) I also love seeing what you make
Hey Peter, what's your monthly resin budget?
I spend about $40 a month on resin.
Pretty healthy habit there...er...
1ucasvb probably 3/4 of his income
When I saw those shavings, I remembered the confetti blank video! Great work Peter :)
thanks! Yeah, I ALMOST made a pen in that video...
Then make a pen blank using the shavings from this project!
Hi. Just bought myself some west systems resin. What's the mixing ratio for it ? Doesn't say on the thing that comes with the kit I bought
You need the pumps! It makes it some much easier. Most places that sell the resin also sell the pumps. Then it's just one pump of each.
Peter Brown so 1:1 then :)
yep! 1:1 with the pumps
I would love to see more pens
your projects always turn out so amazingly
