    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 года назад +1

      Hey Marten, thanks for watching-especially twice:) I would say for studio stuff it depends entirely on the look you like the most. A wider angle will show more space so if you have an interesting space you want to draw more attention to it can be great. There’s no ‘right or wrong’ here-just preference for a given look.
      There’s some examples in my studio settings video which quickly show the different ZV1 settings and use of the wide lens in a studio setting: ruclips.net/video/FjmUIo5Gf-c/видео.html

    Very nice comparison of both adapters. I got the Ulanzi, but I am not satisfied with it. The biggest criticism, which unfortunately no one mentions in their reviews, is that the WL-1 lens does not have a standard thread on the front. With the Ulanzi it is 61.7mm, so no UV or ND filter fits as an add-on.

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 года назад +3

      Hey OnTour, thanks for watching and the insightful comment. It’s a really good point.
      I’ve been using a 52m variable nd right on the zv1 then attaching whichever wide lens on to that ND. Basically after the real zv1 lens but before the extra wide angle lens.
      It seems ok and if there’s an impact on optical quality it doesn’t seem noticeable, but I can’t claim to be a master of optics to say for sure! 😆
      Maybe that workaround might help, fingers crossed 🤞, but as you say I have no solution for the non standard thread on the outside.

      Thanks, your video was very informative to choose between the 2, and I particularly like the chromatic aberration on the Zomei, but the no use of zoom is hard (altho I fear the weight of the lens can damage the camera at using too much the zoom)

    Great review thanks, subbed 👍🏻. I went for the Jobi telepod stick for now to use with my ZV-1. One thing i've noticed is the camera is more stable on the tripod so using both a WA lens and stick might be a good combo.

      Thanks KD, really appreciate you watching and the nice comment:) Welcome on board 💪 I think you’re right about the stabilisation- it seems to do a bit better with a grip extension of some kind and the brief footage I took here with the selfie stick and wide lenses looks pretty smooth too, so agree that it looks a good combo.
      My favourite thing about the wide lenses is that convenience of just putting in a pocket whenever you go somewhere in case you want to shoot. Some grip extensions fit that description too but the tradeoff is they are inevitably a bit bulkier.

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 года назад +1

      Hey DJ F, I’m pretty sure the lens requires both parts together to provide the wide angle view and correct optical quality. I haven’t tried the step up ring solution you suggest so can be sure but most larger lenses have multiple glass lenses inside; remove any one of them and the viewing angle, focus, distortion etc can all get messed up so I definitely would not rely on that step up ring approach working - the 2 elements together give that wide angle view. Hope that helps!

    Hello! Have you ever made a video of how to balance the sony zv 1 with the ULANZI lense since it’s so heavy because I am having a hard time balancing the sony zv 1 with the ULANZI lense, everytime I turn on the camera it will just face all the way down and crane M2 couldn’t handle it... and yes I use the same gimbal that you were using in the video. I’d love to hear an advice or tips from you 🙏🏼

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 года назад +3

      Hey Jerome, it’s definitely a bit more difficult to balance with the Ulanzi, BUT it definitely works:)
      The main tips I have are to put the zv1 as far back as possible on the mounting plate, which will help with the front heaviness of the lens
      Also ensure the camera is turned on and can balance facing up towards the ceiling before turning on the gimbal. It’s basically the same method as in this video: ruclips.net/video/zOEyHuCOsu4/видео.html
      The only difference is really the mounting plate thing.
      There’s also some brief tips/video of balancing the Zomei lens (same exact principles but slightly lighter) in this vid if some more visual reference is helpful:

    Great video,
    One thing that annoys me is the poor magnification ability of the 70mm end of the zv1 lens. Does the Ulanzi included macro lens improve on this, or does it only work at 24mm (which focuses close enough on me)?

      Hey Rudy, sorry for the slow reply - I didn’t get a notification for this comment so only seeing now I sweep up things I haven’t replied to!
      The macro attachment definitely helps with magnification and can help achieve some pretty nice macro shots, it also works well at all focal lengths from 24 to 70. Just bear in mind you’ll get a lot of bokeh and a very thin focal plane in the bargain too:) Hope that helps!

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 года назад +1

      Hey ISA, thanks for watching and sharing the kind words:) I took a look at the Hoheem Multi and the weight limit is apparently 400 grams. The Zomei is 94g and the Ulanzi is around 114g. I think the zv1 itself is around 300g.
      So theoretically the Zomei would be just within the gimbal weight limit and the Ulanzi would be just above, but it will be very close. Without having tried myself I’d say it may be better to look for a gimbal with a higher limit - running the motors to their limit and using nearly the max weight could be fine but sometimes it can also shorten the life of a gimbal or give less smooth results. Great review! However, I have yet to find someone who discusses how the weight, especially of the Ulanzi, will affect the ZV1 lens. The ZV1 lens mechanism is not designed to leverage such a load at the farthest edge from its anchor point. With the ZV1 lens extended, you'll notice that there is some wiggle to it and the weight of the wide angle lens seems to me that it could damage the mechanism that adjusts the ZV1 lens especially walking around. There seems to be too much torque on the extended lens with the weight of the wide angle lens. Am I missing something?

      Hey CP, thanks for the kind words:) The only impacts on image quality that I’ve noticed are the ones I mention in the video:
      The Zomei has some slight distortion/chromatic aberration at the very edge of th image; it also won’t work if you want to zoom in; though if you’re using a wide lens I’d actually suggest removing before you zoom as that will get a closer zoomed in view.
      The Ulanzi has neither of those issue and seems largely solid on image quality. The only minor thing I noticed was a bit of flaring around light last in low light situations. Hope that helps!

    Received the ulanzi today. Do you have any worries that adding that much weight to the lens barrel will cause long term stress on the motors? I've read that some peor hold 5he camera down when opening the varel and up when closing to let gravity ease the strain. Also orders the zomei. I attach the zv1 on top of an a7 rii so that I can walk around and take videos whilst photographing with family and on outings/vacation. Used to use a rx100 iii. With the zv1, cage, mic and lens, it's going to be quite a weight, so hopefully the zomei will help this compared to the ulanzi, and ease the pressure on the motors a little.

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 года назад +3

      Hey JT, great to hear from you and thanks for flagging the good question. So I do try to tilt the zv1 to let gravity do a bit of the work as you suggest, but I’m around 9 months in using the zv1 with some type of wide lens fairly often and no major issues yet. Ultimately there’s a logic that says extra weight would put a bit more strain on the motors but there’s nothing I’ve seen in real world use so far that has been too concerning, so hopefully that will continue:)

    I have this camera the stabilization sucks it's absolutely horrid even with active steady shot. Sure this add on lens is helpful for getting wider shots but the stabilization is a deal breaker I ONLY use my camera with a gimbal which no longer makes it a pocket camera since you must carry around another big piece of hardware.

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 года назад +2

      Hey Chris, thanks for watching and sharing the insightful comment. I think you’re right that the stabilisation isn’t as good as you would hope for vlogging but I’ve had some decent results with active steadyshot and more relaxed walking. Much quicker and you’re right-it becomes too shaky.
      I’ve also found using catalyst can give some really good results if you’re ok with the extra work in post production-that mitigates the need for more hardware but causes a different tradeoff.
      I think Sony in general have some great strengths but stabilisation isn’t their strongest suit (other than the most expensive stuff like the a7s3). I did some testing across all the Sony options and the active steadyshot of the zv1 was actually one of the better performers: ruclips.net/video/Ty2FoHbDff8/видео.html

      If you're that angry about stabilisation you're either a novice who had far too high expectations or you don't know what you're doing; the stabilisation is fine especially if you use Browse in post, and if you're trying to produce something of quality you should be using a gimbal anyway. Good luck finding a camera with gimbal-equalling stabilisation, especially for under £1000.

    Do you have any idea if we apply the ulanzi wide lens on Sony ZV1 , does it voids the camera warranty ? Please do revert if possible . Thank you !

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 года назад +1

      Hey Sirmovealot (great name!) the answer will vary with the country you're in and the type of warranty you have, but I'll answer as well as I can.
      In the UK Sony state that accidental damage or improper handling can void a warranty, however in reality this will come down to interpretation. Putting an attachment on a camera so you can use ND filters, wide lenses etc would seem a pretty normal use given the product and if you ever ran into a problem you could remove the adapter the lens attaches too before sending for repair.
      So, while I'm no expert n warranty law, I think:
      Would it definitely void the warranty: No
      Could someone argue using attachments is improper handling: Maybe
      Is there a high risk of someone using that argument to void the warranty: No, not in my opinion
      The other thing to take some comfort from is that the same adapters and and many of the same attachments that work for the ZV-1 have been around for years on Sony RX cameras and I'm not aware of people running in to any issues or Sony advising people not to use them.
      So I think it's very low risk, but not zero risk. Hope that helps, consider subbing if you like this sort of content and have an awesome day:)

      The real answer: not sure; I’ve always enjoyed abstract humour and wordplay and I spent a while working in retail, which was intellectually dry enough I started coming up with stupid random thoughts to entertain myself. Sadly it’s now a hardwired habit 😂
      Great to see you and hope you’re doing well 👍

    Hii, does Sony zv1 work with Dji ronin s gimbal? Please let me know

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 года назад

      Hey GTN, thought I’d replied to this but clearly not - sorry 😂 The ronin will definitely be powerful enough, I’d just check the minimum weight it’s setup for. The zv1 alone is 294g and some gimbals have a minimum weight of 300,350g etc. you can always add a cage and other accessories to make the zv1 heavier if that looks like an issue.

      Hey Sebastien, I just picked up the answer to this in your Q on the 7 best value accessories video ruclips.net/video/8II5PMJu5is/видео.html
      The quick answer for anyone with a similar question here: I try to respond to how bright conditions are and to preserve the setting I care about, like 1/50 shutter in some situations. So I can use the variable ND on its own or in combination with the built in one depending on how bright the scene I’m shooting is.

    I don't think anybody uses the zoom on the ZV-1. The ZV-2 would do well with a 16 or 20mm pancake prime.

    • @dbvares8745
      @dbvares8745  3 года назад

      Definitely agree about the wider lens, but while I don’t use it super often the zoom is handy at times for different shot compositions and b roll especially. Some of my favourite bokeh results came from being fully zoomed in as you can see here:
      ruclips.net/video/PfDZs2Zkfq0/видео.html
      Separately, pancake prime is an excellent phrase:)
