2020 Honda Civic Si RACETRACK Review: Running 'Trackcross' at Summit Point's Shenandoah Circuit

  • We see plenty of older #Honda and Acura models racing with NASA's Honda Challenge race series - but how can Honda's popular #CivicSi stack up when put on a racetrack? We took the 2020 Civic Si HPT Coupe to Summit Point's Shenandoah circuit for a day of "trackcross" - basically, autocross on a section of road course - and found out for ourselves.

    I purchased a 2020 Si coupe this summer and believe this review to be accurate. I like the car very much and think it looks great, but the drivetrain discourages aggressive driving. The rev hang is god awful due to the extremely heavy flywheel and ECU emissions tuning. Chang gear in this like you would in an S2000 and the car jolts due to the massive mismatch between engine and wheel speed. It's particularly bad in the 1-2 and 2-3 change, even driving calmly and shifting around 3.5k. It almost compromises safety because when accelerating from a stop, you have to wait what seems like an eternity for the revs to drop before releasing the clutch in 2nd gear for a smooth change. The person following you is now right on your tail wondering why you're not accelerating! You're also correct about the powerband. Revving beyond 5k in this car is pointless and frankly you don't want to rev beyond that because the rev hang is most severe when shifting at high revs or coming off full throttle in any gear. The pedal placement sucks and I had to buy a throttle pedal relocation bracket so heel-toe because the brake and throttle were too far apart. It's not all bad though. The suspension tuning is very good and throwing this car through tight corners is a blast. I don't regret buying it and if you want an affordable FWD coupe with three pedals that you can easily daily and also have fun on a weekend, this car is pretty much the only game in town. Or at least it was now that it's been discontinued. This response was way longer than I intended.

      It's always GREAT to hear from owners as we get a relatively short period of time to evaluate cars and it may or may not reflect actual longer-term ownership. Aside from the pedal bracket, have you done anything else to modify your Si? Others have indicated a tune helps quite a bit with some of the rev hang and power production.

      @@OutMotorsports No, although I understand K-Tuner can mitigate the ECU-induced rev hang. I'm reluctant to void the five year powertrain warranty on a brand new car.

      I don't feel that the pedals are too far apart. I have no issue with transitioning from brake and throttle.

    Using Hondata unlocks a lot of the power band.

    Thanks for the great and very knowledgeable review. I've owned this car for almost 3 and a half years now in sedan form and you hit the nail on the head. Was this a timed event?

      Glad you enjoyed! Yes, this was timed for paid entrants, though we weren't officially competing (Honda would allow "testing" but not competition).

    I own this car, and here's my 2 cents. Ktuner is a must. To take off revhang and improve the turbo response.makes a massive difference in driving. It's very tossable, weight tendering and getting little slides are extremely predictable and satisfying. Pedal placement is horrendous, first thing I needed was a relocater and its the best mod I have had. Great for autocross and spirited driving but needs some mods for serious tracking. Overall a great platform for whatever ur goals are, except for high hp, u don't wanna push a shit ton of hp.

    The fiesta ST has the same turbo behavior as the SI sounds like. The turbo is super small which makes the car feel like it has a much bigger motor from like 2k-5k RPM but it falls on it's face around 5k as the turbo runs out of steam which makes revving it out kind of pointless.

      Definitely one where you “drive the torque band” and peak HP is a little less meaningful...

    Du musst dich noch an die Schaltung gewöhnen und immer vor den Kurven Runterschalten und in die Kurve Gas geben 💪
