Having a protagonist with actual thoughts on the story instead of this "Tell don't show" approach that they love using. Hate how they're like "These characters are your avatar except for this small part when they're suddenly not anymore because they develop a personality that we are immediatly going to take away once this chapter is over".

I agree! They can actually show the feats and then go full anime monologue to actually ADD credibility to these Servants and characters than just adding to speculation or likelihood of things being possible. It MIGHT trivialize some of the things they intend to show because OP, but at least you DO have something to SHOW for it.

Three changes that could improve FGO :
    1. Give Ritsuka more personality. Like having a backstory instead of being just another self insert protagonist.
    2. Your choices and decisions matters because it could lead to bad end.
    3. Ritsuka expressing more emotions using voice acting. Hell, he's already voiced by Nobunaga Shimazaki and dude did a good job voicing Ritsuka in the anime.

I think he doesn't need much of a backstory taking place before Chaldea, since I think it's really interesting that he's just an ordinary guy that ended up in a situation way out of his league and he rises up to the challenge.
That being said, I'd love more stuff like the dreams he got trapped in in LB6, where moving forward, we get to see how the story so far has affected him as a person.

I had an interesting thought when reading some of the new Valentine's cutscenes. Specifically the one for Lancer Ryouma where there is a brief post-scene where Oryou and Ryouma discuss how even if everyone else abandons the protagonist. They will not. It made me wonder: "if Ritsuka wasn't their Master or on the same side as humanity then how many of their Servants would actually side with them? How many would hold personal loyalty towards the protagonist over their duty as Servants or when they no longer have an obligation to serve?" It reminded me of an earlier video you did about 'What if Ritsuka had their own Lostbelt' and I began to think: Who would side with Ritsuka in such a scenario? If Ritsuka was betrayed and thrown away when humanity no longer needed them. Which Spirits would stick with them through thick and thin? Very few I would think but Ryouma and Okita Alter are fairly likely to stay by Ritsuka's side which is ironic considering they are both former Counter Guardians.
If there was a future plot-line focusing exclusively on Ritsuka where all their worst fears about the end of the journey are realized. Where they are potentially faced with becoming an enemy of humanity against Chaldea for their own self-interest. Develop their own personality in this aftermath scenario without nearly as much supporting cast. What would you feel about this Tsiah? We know the world of mages is cruel and we've already seen an example in-game how the future prospects of the Last Master of Humanity don't bode well. Does this have potential to actually happen and what do you think it might look like if it does?

Ritsuka is the 2nd only good self-insert I've seen next to pokemon games but it's because Nasu's writing is so good it gave Ritsuka a personality. Honestly, I would think FGO isn't suppose to be that big because the concept of having these historical figures, myths, legends and concepts in one franchise sounds like a good concept but how well will it fare as a franchise is the million dollar question and Nasu answered it with Otaku shit and made it. Now the question is how would Ritsuka interact with the servants once he lost the character insert status, the "how would Ritsuka take it if he would finally be in the frontline" question has already been answered by the movie.

If there's any improvements, especially for adaptations, I'd say the biggest thing is that we should have Chaldean Servants play more roles in the story.
This is why I say that Turas Realta is the definitive adaptation of FGO, because it actually has Chaldean Kiyohime, Hector, and Arjuna actually play active roles and interact with the people in the Singularities when they come along with Fujimaru.
We only got this kind of thing during the Lostbelts in the game, and even then it was not all the time, and they often got overshadowed. I want to see the partners we bring actually get to shine and get along with the people we meet.

On second thought, the first four singularities after Fuyuki is just the writer paying tribute to histories and myths but headcannon is his writing style so Camelot and Babylonia writing are ironically good when he scraped off trying to be historically accurate with the stories when it's not to begin with.

I agree with people pointing out the problems of a protagonist who doesn't feel really affected by the journey, and whose impact in the journey feels limited when the stakes are barely altered by their actions (the first real impact was creating the Holy Sword in LB6). I understand your argument about entertainement being a priority for the consumer, but that can be said about other franchises which went to the abyss due to sacrificing every other good thing to rely on entertainment alone. Many popular LN and games have very poor quality in storytelling but rely on people who enjoy power trips or similar niches (Overlord, for example).
Beyond that, I would add that FGO is trying too hard to up the scales and build a multiverse at the cost of the consistency and autonomy of the previous works of Typemoon, forcing more retconning and reboots to retroactively explain new reveals. Goetia annoyed me when he first appeared as Fake Solomon and he started bragging about defeating Types and other monsters who we only knew from more obscure works such as Notes and and DDD, but then we finally fight Type Oort and that dude made Beasts look pathetic. We didn't fight the others Types before the big boss, we went straight for it. And when all pieces on the board disappeared, more reveals about Marisbury over the top secret plan and a secret Apostle as the puppetmaster (Black Zetsu vibes there).
At this point I would recommend working on a way to finish the story (or at least this volume) that avoids more abuse of Deux ex Machina. Heck, do not use the reboot of the timeline, that's like making every choice irrelevant and one of the most despised tricks in anime and manga.

    • @pougetguillaume4632
      @pougetguillaume4632 9 месяцев назад +1

@@Sirius-wh1cbI don't know lb 7 but i have a solid guess why oort is a problem. After we defeat zeus, the antagonist that has been built up to this point, we then have to face the even bigger baddie chaos for some reason. After beating cernunnos, the antagonist that has been built up to this point, we then have to face the even bigger baddie vortigern for some reason. I assume lb 7 will have the main problem, namely powercreep. even before lb 5 you could see the powercreep with each villain beyond goetia being an even bigger threat than the last (hello arjuna) with powers dwarfing past ones.
Remember when the nasuverse was about a few random people navigating their world to reach a personal goal? Welp no more, strap in boys we have to save the planet the 3rd time this week with our blank slate protag kun. Powercreeping is fgo's most insidious flaws and it's only gotten worse with story chapters
See the problem is that even if you justify the bigger bad guys existence in lore, it doesn't justify its existence in the story (doylan vs watsonian). For example vortigern makes sense lore wise, but narratively the story of lb 6 was over, everyone died and fulfilled their character arc. Post cernunnos can be boiled down to: oberon twist villain (because twist villains are always awesome aren't they disney?), vortigern threaten the world (how is it any different from cernunnos? It's game over either way), melusine deus ex machina (create an unsolvable problem then solve it the second after thanks to something out of the character's control, what an amazing idea), castoria shows up in servant form to beat oberon (her arc is already complete, she doesn't say or do anything of value beside participating in the fight). The only thing of value in the entire post cernunnos phase is aurora reminiscing about melusine, which could have happend pre cernunnos death specifically during the dragon melusine boss fight which would have actually enhanced the experience by contrasting aurora's thoughts with melusine's robotic breakdown and death. Instead melusine deus ex machina... Yay.
Fgo is fascinated by powercreep which has the potential to go very wrong if experience with shonen is anything to go by.

Reduce the time Mash eats by reducing her involvement and focus on the actual main character , just like in lostbelt 6 as we have seen him develop by having mash absent or like SERAPH or shinjuku and shimosha .

  • @meganut5541
    @meganut5541 9 месяцев назад +14

The story quality tends to vary wildly from chapter to chapter. You can have some really good chapters (Lostbelt 6, Babylonia, Camelot) and some really bad chapters (Everything before Camelot, Lostbelts 2 and 3, Agartha, Tunguska) and the game expects us to treat all of them with the same level of respect. Like one of the most important reveals in the game happened in London of all places.
It also doesn't help that the protagonist barely exists as a character. The one time we get a semblance of a personality out of them is the best chapter in the game so far, but for most of them they just don't interact with the characters so its hard to be invested. Like for example in Atlantis, I personally loved Atlantis but could not for the life of me get invested into Charlotte's plot because it was almost entirely one sided. Like yeah the protagonist shows her basic kindness and respect, but it ends up falling flatter than it should because I just can't see any meaningful connection being formed there.
The same problem exists with Mash too before Camelot and after Part 1. Mash's development is basically stunted by being the deuteragonist of a gacha game, so instead of developing her properly in part 2 we just get snippets of it. Again, one of the few chapters to rectify this and give her something to do besides being an exposition machine is Lostbelt 6, and its a lot better because of it.
I would say the best way to fix FGO's writing would probably be consistency. If they just gave the characters consistent long term character arcs it would help tremendously. And it's not like they can't do this either, just look at what they did with Goredolf, they gave him a multi chapter long arc and he became a fan favorite because of it. If they just built off of what was present in Lostbelts 1 and 6 for Ritsuka it would help improve him drastically.
Of course there are a lot more problems like story bloat, character dissonance from the gacha and story (Morgan is probably the biggest example of this), the blatant pandering to the audience, shallow writing for some characters (notably in the early parts of the game), and of course the ridiculous levels of main story powercreep, but I believe that consistency is the main issue for the writing.
This isn't to say I hate FGO with a passion, in fact I love it. I wouldn't have stuck with this game if the writing was that bad. Its just that the highs skew extremely high, but the lows are genuinely unbearable.

    - More screen time for Olga, we spend almost no time with her and the game later wants us to believe that her death was this great tragedy that motivates us
    - Cut the fat from the Singularities stories. They all have something random that is just there to take up space, especially in Septem and London.
    - More screen time for Goetia, he is the main antagonist of the First Part but we only see him twice before he dies.
    - Give Mash more personality early on, because before Camelot all she does is act cute and talk in place of the MC
    - Wait at least until the Second Lostbelt to introduce Da Vinci Lily. Her appearing literally right after the Original Da Vinci dies doesn't give us any time to feel her loss.
    - More personality for Arjuna Alter, he is a terrible antagonist and his only characteristic is "I am a God, I don't care about anything"

FINALLY someone with some common sense about Kounya!!
Edit: I agree this game would have done well with a route system, a little bit of a back story play along for us players to get to know our character more, and showing our character having reactions to what we choose for them along with some inner thoughts.
Heck Arknights kind of do the back story situation a little better since the game revolves around finding out who the doctor was, and solving the modern day issues our protag might have caused while also showing the doctors thoughts and how our choices have some adverse reactions, personality wise.
They even let us see some of the doctors thoughts before we make a speech choice!
However, I feel like Nasu would have shoved the entire game behind a pay wall if he made that choice at the beginning, but there are no excuses towards the end.
Let us have a chance to save the characters we hold dear then we will deal with the consequences afterwards Nasu, I don't like games that hold my hand all the time!

You know thinking about sith and comparing her to the other faes you really see how much of the short end of the stick she got compared to them in lb6. Even from the very start. Barghest gets to show off how strong she is and kill off Tristan when she first was introduced, melsuine wipes out an entire enemy group by herself while we basically play clean up. Sith man when we first fight her we won against her in a battle of mage craft of all things all because she ran out of tools? Really? The same person who is supposed to be Morgan's daughter, also studies mage craft, lost because of tools, and it just goes down hill from there for her when we meet and fight her in future parts.
I guess if there one thing I would change in lb6 beside from what already been mentioned in the video, is make us lose that first fight with sith, it wouldn't had shown even someone like her who basically a spoiled rich brat in first introduction is still a fae Knight that shouldn't be mess with and on top would have gave her a air of threatening antagonist, which was something she was lacking compare to the other two knights.

My 3 pieces which i believe would improve FGO
1, Give Ritsuka battle damage. This is one of my annoyances with fgo when you see how much stuff happens to Ritsuka, allow others characters/servants mention or talk about it, scars carry stories and build personality on a person, like have ritsuka in his swimsuit and have a character mention his stomach area looking a bit funny. A call back to when he got shot with a LITERALL cannonball in the American singularity.
2, consequences for bad choices. Now i don't think bad ends are necessarily needed for fgo, we are after all. Saving the world, and this is mostly a "no reset" run we are trying to do, but i would like to see actual stakes being played when im told "this is it guys! We are now OFFICIALLY cooked" having characters or servants meet an untimely demise because of a bad choice we did would up the drama and story.
3, less gag characters. Now, i love my Okita Summer Alter and i will died on the hill that the alter is better than the original but i digress, it feels like every time theres an event we have another servant introduced, and not even new original ones, its either a variant of an original of a even worst, a variant of a variant. (Were up to what? 12 variants of artorias by now?) Honestly, i get copy paste faces bring in money but at what point do you say that is it too many? I would like to know.

I've argued this repeatedly but my list of things that could have improved fgo are:
    1. Make Ritsuka an actual character. All i know about him is that he's a "generic nice guy" that everyone falls in love with for some reason. Hell Shirou is my favorite protagonist because he has characterisation I know his likes, dislikes, his dreams, talents, his relationships with others and his FLAWS. I got nothing with Ritsuka and trauma from the lostbelts doesn't make him interesting because he just resets at the start of the next chapter just to repeat the same plot beats anyway instead make the evets actually effect the protagonist and perhaps use that for some interpersonal drama.
    2. Stop relying on "Talk No Jutsu" it's annoying how a servant was all "ride or die" to their cause/side until 1 or 2 short conversations with the protagonist is enough betray everything and everyone they knew and switch sides. I can believe it for a few servants to do that but most of the time I don't buy it with alot of the other servants.
    3. Have consequences for the character's actions. There are so many times the characters ignore logical or otherwise good plans to do what are at the time impractical or might be a bad idea their excuse being "I Know it's selfish but please [blank]" and somehow it works out. How about having some of those decisions backfire badly instead making it seem they can do no wrong.
    4. Call out the protagonist on their hypocrisy and bs. Seriously it's really annoying when the main characters act like they got the moral high ground when by now their actions are no different than the antagonists. Or when they say "I'm not your enemy! I'm just going to "kill" you and everyone and everything you love but I swear I'm not your enemy."
    5. Stop trying to have you cake and eat it too. The game wants you to not judge a servant based on their actual background or what they did in a previous story chapter because that's not the same version of the character and they're a clean slate but at the same time they make the previous version of that servant like da protagonist so much and become friends even when they're enemies so that you will project your feelings onto the version you summon even though that is not the same version.
    6. Lastly stop making almost all the big bosses a dumbass that could easily end Caldea for some arbitrary reason until it's too late and bites them in the ass.
    7. Stop sexualizing the loli servants I hope I don't need to explain further.
Wow that was alot of my chest.

The issue with nezha is the same issue that alot of the other genderbends suffer from the reason why is just because waifu. Most of it starts and ends there jacq also suffers from this, I love the goffy spiteful jacq but that's about as far as her characterization goes, others like Drake have better explanations in other materials but are instead just reduced to they're women because they are.

I would say give Ritsuka more personality, have them be conflicted and stressed over being the last master, have them show a more outside perspective on mage society. I wanna see their reaction to all the stuff about mages they see, they probably have got to have formed an opinion on mages by now.
Have goetia interact with mash and ritsuka more, taunting them over their journey, maybe even reveal early why they are doing this, showing them what they saw.
Have da Vinci lily show up in LB2, with LB1 being the lowest point for our crew after what happened and the LB1 being a breaking point that can lead to a bad end if chosen.
Have the option to call out the cryptic stuff people spout and ask for clarification or layman's terms. Believe me, I think a lot of people would like this, like a lot can be answered if people just say what the heck is happening rather than dance around the topic. Having Goetia reveal to chaldea why he is doing this, tease the lostbelts early and that Goetia was trying to save humanity, flawed though it was. It could have shown goetia for its flaws.
rewrite Septem and Agartha. Enough said.
Have moments with Mash where we can flesh out Ritsuka as well, like ask about their life outside chaldea and what it was like, and their thoughts on everything till now.
More time with Olga Marie, I feel that killing her off too early hampered her. I would have love to see her interact more, grow as a person. Especially given what LB7 reveals about her dad, and Seraph too, would have loved to see her react to those revelations.
And lastly I did have a thought. If goetia woke up in this timeline, could there have been a timeline where marisbilly won because goetia didn't wake up? Would like to see if that happened to show what makes Marisbilly so dangerous.

Junk the camera. Good point about the lack of stakes. That hit hard. Death fake outs and shit are terrible too but the here's another version of the character heyhey is super lame. Death has no weight. Not even LB7 and ORT could trump that sense of "no weight". Plays a good part in why every chapter seems to blend together. Terrible placing too. It's expected though given the type of game since the writers have to incorporate monthly additions that were never planned in the main outline. So it's just like shoehorning filler. The OC arc is especially egregious.

In fact, it's still too ridiculous right now that the Fate/Prototype version of Gilgamesh is still not in FGO.....could it be that because of the slow pace of the Fate/strange Fake story, it make Gilgamesh will can not have a class that is much stronger than his Archer version?

Don’t make it a mobile gacha game. There are too many servants, not enough time. Focusing on quality vs quantity is pretty important. It should have been done in a different medium. A LN or manga.
Fan service is also an issue. How many Emiyas do we need? It’s excessive.
Lore inconsistencies. There are special cases, but in the lore, a servant can only be summoned once to a grail war. So they shouldn’t be able to be permanent members. Plus with the sheer amount of servants, the master would be dead.
The masters themselves are inconsequential. The stories should always surround the servants and not have some weird love story for the stand in protagonist and a dead person. They’re dead. That’s always been weird to me in the fate series.
