    Always consult a financial advisor or attorney for the most accurate information that pertains to your credit situation! Always pay your debts BEFORE they hit your credit. Individual results will vary, based on differences in credit reports, contract terms, state laws and statute of limitations. I make no guarantees that this method will work for you. Trust but verify and do your homework!
    www.experian.c...
    FIRST: pull your credit report & identify what is lowering your score.
    Navigate to Experian or PrivacyGuard.com (they have free trials) and pull your 3 reports + Scores! AnnualCreditReport.com has reports but DOES NOT display scores.
    💢 IDENTIFY WHAT’S LOWERING YOUR SCORE
    -1. You don’t have ENOUGH credit established.
    -2. You have late payments on your report.
    -3. You have accounts in COLLECTIONS
    -4. Your accounts are closed to being maxed out
    -5. You have a public record such as a bankruptcy or foreclosure.
    HOW TO FIX LATE PAYMENTS:
    -CALL the creditor and negotiate the terms of the debt and ask if they can adjust your account status back to current/paid.
    -EXPLAIN you are having a tough time and ask if they can remove the late payment as a COURTESY.
    -IDENTIFY any inaccuracies and dispute it.
    HOW TO FIX ACCOUNTS THAT ARE IN COLLECTIONS:
    -DISPUTE, DISPUTE, DISPUTE any errors or inaccuracies (name, account opened date, account amount, etc) Should you pay a debt collector in order to repair your credit report or is there a better way to go about collections
    -Ask the lender to VALIDATE the debt
    -ASK FOR “PAY FOR DELETION”* while I don’t recommend this method, here is how it can be used: Get a letter from the collection agency that states they will DELETE the negative account from your Credit Report, upon receipt of payment. If the account balance is already “$0.00” but the status of the negative collection is still on your report, dispute the debt anyway with the credit bureaus.
    -If (Equifax, Experian and/or TransUnion) cannot prove the debt, it’ll get removed*
    FIX MAXED OUT ACCOUNTS ON YOUR CREDIT REPORT:
    1. Pay down OR PAY OFF your credit cards, loans or any revolving accounts,
    2. Ask for the credit card company to raise your credit limit-(DO NOT USE MORE CREDIT; BE RESPONSIBLE).
    I raised my credit score over 300+ points and I didn't have to pay anyone! The most common misconception of improving one's credit score is that if you pay your collections accounts reported on your credit report, this will help your credit score. WRONG! I will explain why disputing collections accounts from your credit report is the BEST method to raise your score! Disclaimer: I am not a financial advisor. This is strictly for informational purposes and does not replace the advice from a financial advisor, credit bureaus agent or attorney.

    One thing I wanted to add is, when you send in a written (typed) dispute letter, please be sure NOT to physically sign your name. Instead, just type your name at the bottom of the letter. Some people will type their name and also sign their name in ink. DO NOT SIGN YOUR NAME IN INK! By signing your “signature” in ink to a dispute letter, gives the credit bureaus another way of validating the debt - your signature! The credit bureau’s will contact the creditor to obtain a copy of the original contract (if it’s available). Once or if it’s obtained, they will compare the signature on the contract to the hand written signature on your dispute letter. More than likely the signatures will be match and the credit bureau’s will deem your account “VALID”! So, the moral of the story is, only type your signature at the bottom of your dispute letters, no ink allowed! Hope this helps!!

    I managed a collection agency and I’d like to offer suggestions and some corrections. 1. Collection agencies don’t always buy debt. The trend for many decades has been to accept debt for a percentage of collections. For example, if they collect they get paid, if they don’t well they don’t. 2. Disputing doesn’t always work, even if you have legitimate claims. It can take multiple disputes sometimes which is unfortunate. 3. IF you are unsuccessful getting an item removed and you seek to pay it off I recommend two things. First, contact the collection agency and negotiate a settlement. ALWAYS get the settlement offer in writing. Most agencies will say they will report it as a “Paid Collections” item. DO NOT accept that. It’s the same as paying the original amount and will stay on your credit. Get the agreement in writing that the agency will REMOVE it completely from your report. Next, send a physical check and DO NOT pay online. Write your account number and “Paid in FULL” on the memo line. If a collection agency accepts it then they are agreeing to those terms. Which leads me to my next suggestion. You can write that in the memo as a settlement offer without speaking to them or negotiating the offer and if the agency accepts it that’s done. For example, if you owe $1000 and you send a check for $150 as a settlement offer and you write the above in the memo section and the agency cashes it, that’s acceptance of your offer. If you do either I recommend sending any correspondence by certified mail which provides you proof of receipt, I also strongly suggest reiterating any settlement offers with a letter stating your offer or agreed upon settlement. Take pictures of the letter and check as well as the certified mail receipt because many issues arise from “he said, she said” and unless you have irrefutable proof you likely won’t have a leg to stand on. 4. Lastly, if you can’t pay it in full, negotiate a settlement, work out payments that are short term, etc. it is best NOT to pay the debt. The reason is that the time clock starts ticking with the last payment you make not the original date of the debt. For example, you owe $1000 and can’t afford to pay it within a year or two and you make a payment, the date of the last payment starts the seven year clock over so instead of the original date which might have been a year or two earlier means that it could be on your credit far longer than seven years. I hope this information was helpful. Best of luck!

      I wish I could heart this 1,000 times!!! Thank you SO MUCH for your honesty and clarity. I truly wish what you said was common knowledge, but it isn’t unfortunately, which is why people “try to do the right thing” and pay collections and then get a rude awakening when their credit scores aren’t increasing. Thank you for helping the community👏🏾❤️❤️

      Hi James! You’re so kind to explain all this. Would you mind clarifying a couple things? If you send a check with an amount that says “paid in full” without speaking to them and negotiating a settlement - And they cash it - that is considered accepting your terms of agreement? What if they refuse to remove it from your credit? Would the next step then be to send a certified letter stating that the check was marked paid in full and they accepted the terms therefore you are requesting the removal from your credit report? Thank you again!

    I know this video is over a year old but it’s what gave me the information to MAIL a letter to my debt collector who had since given my debt to a 4th party. I asked them to do exactly what she said, to mail me back my original contract and in the next 30 days. I was fully expecting them to mail it to me. I received an email this week from the original debt collection company saying they had “recalled” my debt and have terminated collection efforts and request the credit bureaus DELETE OUR TRADELINE! I am honestly stunned. This shit never happens for me I’m telling you. If anyone is curious, the debt was with Jefferson Capitol Systems who then gave it to Unifin (who when I called immediately tried getting me to settle over the phone and when I asked questions the woman got so irritated with me and eventually she HUNG UP ON ME) Thank you again for your golden information, you are an American treasure. ❤❤❤

    The following day took him to urgent care. They daw him right away fixed the problem and charged $125. Next thing I know I get a bill from hospital for $1700. I wrote letter and disputed it. You probably won't get it removed with a settlement. That's okay. Settling is still SMART! It will still show you paid the debt and owe a $0 balance on your report.

      @@nancystark6693 hey Nancy! How exciting! 🤗 have you pulled your credit yet? The first step is always knowing what’s on your report. Most lenders want you to have between a 580-620 credit score to qualify for an FHA loan! You can get any lender, at any bank to do this for you or you can go to Experian.com and pull your 3 credit reports. If your scores are in the 620 range they will help you learn more about the Pre-Approval process that tells you how much they will loan you, how much down payment you need, and whatever grants you may qualify for! Well, I was taught financial literacy in high school. Unfortunately, a few accounts held me back due to a roommate situation. Living in the same state you know how to navigate your needs even with not so perfect credit. Now that I am moving upward in life, I definitely took the route of paying things off. But you are absolutely right that we have a legal right as consumers to dispute accounts based on certain grounds. And baby! I literally saved $3500 and my credit score is back at a 700.
    Please, please please everyone! Do your research and put in the work. You should not be held back by being financially uneducated in your early adult years. Especially when you were trying to correct it now.

    I worked for a credit card company and once the phrase “Due to FDCPA Laws” being stated, as the agent for the card company you had to be cautious with the remainder of the call or cease the call and notate the account accordingly.
    Also, paper trails with letters are best rather than verbal or sending in disputes online.

    • @ShaniFenderson
      @ShaniFenderson 3 года назад +35

      And the reason why the disputes are important with collection agencies and why they work is, the agency has to have original contract. Most agencies don’t. They “purchase” the debt in bulk but not the original contracts. Contracts contain your original signature that was between you and the credit card company.
      (I can go on for days about this but just a short synopsis as to why the disputes hold more weight under FDCPA).

    One thing to keep in mind, asking for validation with LVNV, Midland or Portfolio won't work as they are debt buyers so they will provide everything you ask which at that point settling would be best. Asking for validation with smaller or local collections agencies, this method for the most part does work.

      One way to FORCE them to play nice, is to play bad ass...SUE. Not the cred reporting agency (good luck with that) but the CC or other bad actor. You can do this by "proxy" btw....you just find someone...anyone, this is a little mean, so pick Walmart or BestBuy..someone who deserves it....and sue them, naming the CC as a second party to the suit. This forces Walmart to bring the CCs attorney to the table ...you do this in county civil court, btw...and you have to have the balls to face their "tough guy" attorneys...you can do it. They can glare at you and look mean...but they can't actually slug you. Some have WANTED to slug me...and I've goaded them...but never got one to actually do it. Yet.

      Hey sister! Omg please don’t pay ANYTHING unless they agree to delete the account off your credit (Pay for Delete). Otherwise, it’s a waste of money. I’d also ask for a settlement over full payment. If you dispute it and they delete the account, you may still be pursued for the balance but at least it’s be off your credit. So you have 2 options you can take: PFD (settlement) or dispute with bureaus ❤️

    Disputing inaccuracies is a good start but, when the debt is confirmed you're going to need to pay. The collection agency can sue and automatically win if you don't reply to the court. If you do decide to go to court then you'll most likely need a lawyer. I'm stating this from experience. I wasted money on a lawyer. Best option is to pay the one-time settlement amount if you can. It will be the biggest savings.

    • @JazzyMac
      @JazzyMac  3 года назад +28

      Hey Paul! Thanks for sharing your experience! I’m in favor of settlements only if they do a deletion. Otherwise, it doesn’t help your credit. 99% of collections will never go to court, but there’s obviously 1% of cases that will due to the amount or account type. The point of this video is to be strategic about paying collections AND NOT paying illegal collection fees. I’ve never been sued and I’ve always challenged my debts. Of course everyone’s situation will vary and state laws are different so outcomes aren’t typical 😀

    I also became my Mom’s POA a year ago because she’s mentally incapacitated dude to severe dementia so I also have to keep up with her payments on bills/utilities etc & back in 2020 before the dementia got really bad, she helped my brother buy a brand new 2020 vehicle & for the longest time I was under the impression/belief that she only co-signed for him but just the other day I called them because my brother has been severely LATE with his payments or just not paying at all. He’s single handily DESTROYED my Mom’s credit & she did some damage herself while she was still paying her own bills because with her dementia she was forgetting to pay her bills/utilities & within a very short timeframe our Gas & Electric were shutoff because of just how delinquent she was on her payments. Dispute it with the credit beauros (can't spell) you can get it reversed. I had a really late payment and I called and said it was unfair and they reversed it. I don't remember why I thought it was unfair but it worked.

      I also had something in collections. It was a medical bill that i didn't know exisisted. I explained that that was unfair as well and they removed it. Never hurts calling.

      @@HackerActivist A medical bill I didn't know existed popped up on my credit because I was looking at houses and prequalified for a mortgage. I guess that triggers collection agencies to add stuff to your credit to tank it so you will rush to pay them. I don't remember this bill, but I am afraid to dispute it or get further details because their letter to me acknowledged they cannot take me to court, and when I ordered my credit reports all say the date of first delinquency was in 4/2015, meaning this is set to fall off the report this year. Does disputing restart the clock on reporting and on allowing them to sue you?

    Paying collections is only good for applying for a home loan. The underwriter will pull your report history and they mark unpaid collections and charge offs. They will deny you or request for you to pay those collections. Better to pay them off before applying for a home loan.

    • @JazzyMac
      @JazzyMac  3 года назад +47

      Hey Maria! I would disagree that paying any collection is worth it because while a $0 balance collection may be accepted by the underwriter, that negative history will still cause you to have a lower credit “score”...which leads to a higher interest rate and more money out of your pocket! 😩 So, it’s always best to get the collection removed/deleted because even a $0 balance collection costs money in the end! 😊

    Hi Jazzy. Great video! Thank you so much for your great explanation of things. I know that several years back I disputed some collections through my Credit Karma account and it worked great. I happened upon a blog at the time that said "never to admit to it being your debt" and I thought that sounded a little fishy, especially if I knew I had an outstanding balance, with say a utility company. However as I continued reading I soon learned what was meant by this statement. If a collection agency contacts you, you can guarantee they are recording it, and this is where they get so many people. The minute you agree that you have an unpaid balance with that utility company it becomes much harder for you to dispute it because now they have you saying yes I know I owe them or whatever you say. What I found out and it is very much what you say Jazzy is this, you don't owe the collection agency because you never entered into an agreement them. Once I understood what I was reading and what I listened to you saying is the advice I used to raise my score over 200 points in under a year. The other thing also is that the original creditor, the utility company, now can no longer come after you either and you no longer owe that bill because they sold it and broke their contract with you. Your advice on writing in to dispute is huge and I never thought about it the way you put it but man are you right. Thank you for helping all of us Jazzy. It is an incredible thing you are doing and I hope you never stop. The world needs more people like you. I still always act like I don't know what they are talking about if I get a collector calling because I know 95% of the time if not more, by doing this the calls usually stop. I remember reading in that blog long ago that making them prove that I owe them was the next step if it was not removed through Credit Karma but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your advice of going that route right off the bat, you skip a step and repair your score that much faster. You are a Rockstar girl! Keep up the amazing work and much appreciated videos! God Bless.

    This video has very good informative content.
    Also, people need to pay their debts, it's not free money, they also need to not borrow irresponsibly, and when you charge something on a credit card, get it paid down asap, not just the minimum payment.
    But at the same time, this nations credit system is nonsense, there's been information out there that this new Administration may revamp our credit system, which I'm 100% behind.
    Also as you stated, never pay a collection anything unless they agree to a "Deletion" letter, not an update, not a settlement.
    You want it completely off your credit report, not just updated and left there.
    Keep in mind, just because you remove the debt from your credit, doesn't mean you still don't owe it...
    These banks, collection agencies etc are going after people left and right, garnishing bank accounts and paychecks...
    So you still need to get you a side hustle and start paying your debts off

    • @JazzyMac
      @JazzyMac  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Todd! All valid points! I encourage folks to pay the original debts and avoid them hitting their credit if they can!
      I’d love to see a revamp of our current system because it’s not designed to make us economically better. Who knows what will happen with that and student loan forgiveness 😆 I’m challenging Biden to bring his promises into reality as that would help so many Americans gain control of their lives.

      May you please tell me more about a deletion letter? I would love to do that.

    • @toddblack8029
      @toddblack8029 3 года назад +2

      @@prettymsdance Let's say you owe 1k on a collection. Start out by offering them $200. If they don't bite at that, wait a bit, call back another day, offer the same, if they don't bite, see what kind of offer they'll give you.
      So let's say they settle on accepting $500
      Tell them you'll do the $500 that day, "If" they'll email you a letter stating that once you pay the $500, they'll provide you with a letter stating the debt is to be deleted from the credit bureaus.
      Not settled in full, not "Updated" but "Deleted"
      If they refuse to do this, then don't pay them.
      Now of course could they garnish your check or bank account? Sure, but usually this works, and if it doesn't and they tell you one day they are about to take you to court, then you best pay the bill even if they don't agree to a deletion letter.
      This really doesn't work great with major banks etc, because they don't need your money like that, but collection agencies are in the business of collecting money.
      So this usually works best with charged off debts, debts that the initial creditor charged off as a bad debt, then they sold the debt to a 3rd party collection agency.
