True! I really hate it when people just in general define a character around just one aspect of who they are.
(Don’t really care when it comes to aesthetic OCs, I have many a character that I just like to draw who don’t really have a personality lol)
Nothing wrong with having gay black characters, we need LGBT characters in general. People of color are fairly uncommon in media, we still have the “token black guy” issue regardless of how much improvement there’s been.
Unless a show is built from the ground up realistically and with the intent of giving minorities positive representation, the show will always be viewed as “forcing it”. It’s a ridiculous balancing act that shouldn’t exist in 90% of cases.
We don’t need throwaway characters, we want heroes who grow and change. The type of character you can look up at and just admire. Smart characters, artist, gay, trans, anything that isn’t bland and overdone. At this point, just about anything you pick is an improvement from the horrors POC grew up watching in the past.
But yeah.... I get that some white, cis, and straight people get upset when they see too many people that don’t match them, but they need to shut up and realize that those people exist in the world and need an outlet just as much as you do. Creators shouldn’t feel like smashing together minorities is their only way to keep those bigots happy.
I wanna see a feminine lesbian, a masculine gay, a black person who isn’t all ghetto and takis, etc.
I understand but here is one of the reasons why there is at least one black guy in netflix. gay guy in black people eye's or in a god worshiping house hold men are raised to be strong and holy but some people in those lives are shamed and seen as "sus" and gay boy" this hurts and most the time there is not a lot of black or colored people that are LGBTQ and yes they need to make them real but still colored people can be gay to ik not every black person is gay people have diff sexual idea's but there need to be more people that are colored and show that not all races are straight
I personally don't have a problem with people drawing fictional characters however they want. The real problem lies with people (usually on twitter) redrawing a character claiming they've "fixed them". That's messed up.

As a african american artist I love when people take characters and redesign them into different races, weights,genders,etc but the only problems start is when you draw a character and claiming you're fixing them or saying "we need more _____ characters". A) You're not fixing sh*t you can't fix other people's art cause it's theirs B) When we say we want more ____ characters we aren't asking for a sad recolor of princess peach because we don't want leftovers of other characters we want something fresh and new.

Yeah, I really like it when people take characters and put them in different settings or as different races, it looks so interesting and fun! As a Hispanic, we have no official Disney princess so seeing things like that is so fun and interesting!

Controversial-ish but I feel like a lot of people forget that anime characters, unless specified ofc, are automatically Asian (Japanese), donghua/cnovel characters are Chinese, and so on and so forth. Just because they have lighter skin doesn't automatically make them white, white isn't the default for characters, and should never be. Reality is, if you've ever been to Japan you'd notice most people aren't dark-skinned, of course there are dark-skinned Japanese but lighter skin (beige, peach, yellowish tinge? I'm Asian and I think I can be written off as 'yellowish') is more common. But! Black characters in anime are starting to become more prevalent (like Dorothy from Great Pretender), which is a good thing. But remember, anime characters aren't raceless or white, they're usually Japanese/Asian unless specified.
Edit: this comment was mainly talking northeast Asians by the way, yes dark skinned Asians do exist, but as I have stated before darker skinned Chinese/Japanese arent as common compared to the southeast, so donghua/anime, which is made in China/Japan BTW, tends to depict them as lighter skinned/similar shades.
I feel like that's a problem from the general english speaking anime community at large, even if a character has a full japanese name and is seen partaking in their culture, a lot of photorealistic artists will draw them with completely white features which is :/ kinda the same as "blackwashing" imo

yeah, another thing people ignore is that Japan is much more homogeneous than America (or than almost any other country lmao), so of course most/all of them will have the same skin color

As a black person, I think blacktober doesn't create true representation.
Taking a pre-existing white character and making them black is just fanfiction-esque race-bending that's not really representation because the canon character is still white and their show is going to be with them being white and their toys are going to be of them white. Not black. Spamming around a re-draw of Princess Peach with brown skin and a full afro isn't even helping because what happens when a little black girl sees it and thinks "oh she looks just like me!", Googles her only to find out she's a white blonde? Disappointment.
Edit: Some of you down below are missing an integral part of where I'm coming from so Imma just put it here. I'm not saying anything on why Blacktober is good or bad or if we need it or not. I'm just countering one of the main defences some people use in favour of Blacktober being "it's to create representation." Nothing more, nothing less.

Personally think blacktober should focus on spreading around already existing black characters, and bringing more awareness to them instead.
I mean isn’t there something about black creators not being able to get anywhere? Maybe seek out black characters from black creators and give them some love instead.

@AM Because theyre mostly light skinned, NOT WHITE. As an asian, Asia's standards are usually having light skinned nowadays. But there are still lots of brown people in south-east asia but not rly in east asia (Japan, China and especially Korea)

Personally, I think there should just be more POC characters. No one wants a sloppy second. Instead of recoloring a character and calling that representation, why can’t we get a fresh, new character instead?

Oh, I can tell you why. Because people don't care, and will continue not to care about BIPOC characters.
It is simply the nature of most people to be more interested in art of series that they already know and are already interested in. Fanart is typically going to be more popular than original OCs and characters. That's just kinda, how it is. On top of that, series that feature BIPOC (in main roles esp) are simply less likely to be popular. Especially popular enough to have fanart that blows up.
I consider this more of a way to bring more attention to these artists through representation in other characters. I've found so many great artists and characters through blacktober, that I wouldn't have found otherwise.

In my opinion as a black woman. I find it wrong. We don’t need to make these already existing characters black. They’re fine the way they are. You don’t see people doing that with other races. We know damn well we would feel offended if someone switched Tianas race. So what makes this ok? We as a community need to push for more representation in media. That’s it. Let’s not change what’s already existing and rebrand it. Instead let’s fight for something of our own. If you want to see a black person in your favorite anime’s then you draw it yourself. Make a NEW character that can represent you. Not changing an already POC character. There are plenty of shows out there that provide black (non stereotypical versions) characters like Michiko to Hatchin, fire force, promised neverland, etc. Let’s try and have more! There’s nothing wrong with wanting to see yourself in your favorite media but IMO this isn’t the way to go. It wouldn’t be right if the roles were reversed so what makes this ok/acceptable. (It would be called racist if it was reversed). I think it’d be nice to see a lot of fanart coming out of blacktober of artists’ own additions to pre-existing media. Also “fixing” characters to look a certain way is DEFINITELY wrong when talking about race. I understand if maybe the design of the character was a little stereotypical (a lot of old school black anime characters have somewhat racist features) so you’d want to “fix” it in a way that was more acceptable/right. However that’s not the same thing. Your not changing the characters race or anything. You’d simply be changing the characters appearance to fit a more appropriate idea/theme. Take the design of Canary (the promise neverland) in the 90’s to the current one. A better representation of a black girl.

Blackwashing doesn't bother me since I also like seeing characters with darker skin tones, but what I thought blacktober would be about drawing fanart for stories and anime that have black characters in them for example I'm reading a magical girl manga called Adorned by Chi which takes place in Africa and it's premise is about college students becoming magical girls which is absolutely amazing, that's what I thought blacktober was about given more attention to these amazing stories created with black people in it I'm sad that they'll just end up. Not being noticed 😔

As a black artist myself I feel like this doesn’t help. 1. You’re just recreating a pre existing character that will 100% not be black in any future
2. There’s actual black characters that exist but no one acknowledges it
3. Is it suppose to be taking white characters because I’ve seen people doing this to anime and it’s like people forget anime characters aren’t white their skin is just different
4.Theres actual black creators with new fresh ideas but we can’t see them because of this

As a while person, I didn't really know much about other races other than that Strawberry Shortcake looked like me, Orange Blossom had a skin color I'd never seen before, Ginger Snap was the same color as my Hispanic friend, and Frosty Puff was the best because she had blue hair and at that age to me having colored hair was really cool (Also she was a snowy character and I liked that). I don't think I actually met someone who was black until I was like 8, even then I didn't care what color he was he was in my vicinity so he was my friend (also our dad's became friends so he was stuck with me).
There is a lot about black hair and culture that I don't know and am too afraid to ask, but at the same time, I assume that some may black people may have the same feelings I do of wanting to know stuff but not wanting to offend someone by asking.

Seriously!! I don’t know many people of color, (not many live in my area, my town is very white) but my African American friend is shy, polite, smart, sweet, and gorgeous. I can’t imagine her having the slightest hint of sass. People need to see more people like these gals in media!!! They deserve it wholeheartedly! 😤💕

A friend of mine was (she moved) black and she was one of the sassiest people i’ve seen. i know a lot of black girls who are sassy, and a lot that are very soft as kind. it just depends on everyone’s situations i suppose. i don’t live in a place with a lot of black people, either. it’s pretty interesting

As a black artist, I do think it’s interesting to see cartoon characters with darker skin tones. However, while I personally prefer black artists just creating original black anime characters (to avoid controversy for the most part), I like the idea of it. But those accounts who edit the picture because they want to “fix” it, obviously have a lot of racist undertones. And it’s funny because most of the time, they’ll give them extremely pale skin with blonde hair and blue eyes. But I think to the mental health of some of these black artists, I just recommend you ignore/block them. The art is gorgeous btw 💞
it's really gross to me when people edit someone else's art, like if you wanna see the character in a different way, just draw them that way. as long as it isn't disrespectful, I don't think the artist would mind you drawing their character in a different way. editing it implies that their art was wrong in the first place, and imo it's just gross

I think it's cool to see characters that are originally white (in skintone, not necessarily race), in a darker skintone.
BUT if you take a white character, make them darker, and calling it "fixing them" then i don't like you :D
small edit a year later: *Don't whitewash.* Pretty sure the video explains why it's wrong to do that, whilst "blackwashing" doesn't exist and drawing light skinned people with a darker skin is a form of representation to POC. It would've been acceptable to whitewash if it weren't for all the historical context + the fact poc are underrepresented in media.

As a black artist blackwashing is a thing and this month people are eventually just blackwashing a bunch of characters I thought this month was gonna be creative makeing new characters or giveing black artists a platform for projects but na so imo blackwashing is the same as whitewashing so essentially just don’t do it

@@mtgamer6432 blackwashing isn't real in the actual world though, but whitewashing is. its something very prevalent still, like the korean beauty standard and people bleaching their skin to appear lighter. "Blackwashing" doesn't have this effect...
my opinion, people should stop calling anime characters "white", because unless if they are called "French" or "American" etc. , they are Asian.
edit; idk if any is understanding what i was trying to say but, what im trying to say is that how people will look at an anime character and generally call them white, as in Caucasian, even though they are Japanese. unless if it is stated that they are in fact French or something. also, sorry if it didn't come out right.

If you want to reply, at least understand the point made. Don't just read the first paragarph. I understand I wrote alot but you could just skip it unless you're interested in the topic I'm talking about: underespresented Asians and how lumping them together with the few well-represented Asian nationalities (hint: Japan) helps in overlooking the rest.
Anyway to op: I see a flaw in this approach. Anime is not a race. That's like saying "cartoons are white". But cartoon/anime isn't a race, It's a style/genre.
Ofc it's safe to assume that an anime character might be Japanese. Though I read that the second most prevalent nationality (likely to also be protagonist and/or have the setting in their homeland) in anime is even British. Followed by other European nationalities (German, French, Italian) along with China and America.
Vietnamese, Taiwanese, Koreans, Thai, Mongolians aren't really represented as much in Japan's anime, so how can we use the blanket term "Asian" when it's accurate to just say Japanese?
this might be the reason why American media always bypasses Asian representation and mostly try to cover latino and black stories. because they feel that Japan's media is giving "a ton of asian representation". The blanket term "Asian" helps overlook asians who don't get anything less than problematic.
As someone from an underrepresented Asian culture, I feel it's inaccurate to think Asians are well represented when it's actually just one or two nationalities at most.

I'm not saying don't ever call the Japanese asians. Just suggesting that, if there's something specific to one nationality, it might be more accurate to just name that nationality
Actually, even in western (American) media, it's unfair to say most white people are represented. The blanket term makes it seem so, but if we were to specify, you see the same bias all over again...
In American media, the main characters in big films/franchises are usually American, then British, French... German/Italian/Mexican/Chinese/and Japanese again
The same is true in Japanese media, as I commented above. Main characters in noteworthy shows are Japanese, then British, American, Chinese Italian/German etc
You see only a couple of specific nationalities in every medium again and again.
Very rarely you see a Taiwanese, Singaporean, Mongolian, even Korean, Indonesian, Burmese and Hongkong person in films that aren't produced by their own country. If ever they're shown, they're always the token person without as much substance
Or tbf, it's only an off chance you see a hungarian, icelandic, portugese person

The double standards between blackwashing and whitewashing is literally the reason why we will never have equality and unable to end racism..
changing a character's race for the sake of "fixing" or "rep" is trash.
as a brown latina i'd be furious if someone did this for my people -- especially if a company did it. making a literal walmart-brand ripoff of a good movie that has 0 effort or love put into it, and just replacing the main character with a darker one, is not representation. it's "we don't want to put effort into this but we want money and we know people will see it if we pretend we care about poc". surely then the movie will come out and everyone will be upset that their representation was garbage.
and recoloring characters doesn't do anything for me... seeing a woman who looks like me and looking up her name to see yet another light-skinned japanese woman does nothing for me. i'm not going to watch that anime or read that comic, that's not the lady i want to see fight cool monsters. that's someone else's representation you tried to trick me into thinking was mine. now i'm just sad because yet another story doesn't care to let me see myself in their world. who did this help? not me. it helps the artist to pretend they're woke or whatever.
not to mention most people who recolor are just racist and pretend they're not. every time i see a latina recolor or something they've just taken a tall, thin, fair-skinned woman and made her fat, short, hairy, and brown. this isn't representation, this is a caricature. then they shove it in my face like "look! i made her look like you!" no you made her look like how a loony toons short from the 40s would portray me but thanks...

For those who say their "fixing" I agree that's racist but I empathize all to well with never having enough representation, especially with the things you love you realize you like things where everyone's skin is so light and then it becomes this thing where like you feel isolated.
Redrawing a character as your own race I don't see a problem. It's fan art, people are free to write fan fictions of their favorite books(tho I consider it rude somtimes lol so I suppose that makes me a hypocrite) why can't they draw what they want?
I think the only time it's messed up is when someone "fixes" a character, but even then I don't know if that's the label you'd use :/

If you would use the term whitewashing to describe a person's art that "fixes" a non white character, then yes black washing would be the right term for when it is a non black character "fixed" into a black character. I think the word for just changing the race for fun is "a different interpretation"
The point of blacktober is more about making fanart, isn't saying that this version is better than the original, it's just imagine a character being a different race. It's just for fun.

And even those that say thats what they mean, end up saying or portraying a different message. The ire is being directed toward those bad apples that make themselves more prominent than those just doing it for complete fun

Not 10 but ya know there is probably more then 1 main character that is black in those. Also that's just from a simple google search. If I went deeper I could most likely find more. While its obviously not as asian characters we do have to realize that while there is black people in Japan its a lot less then in America for example. I think there should be a lot more representation in the media but unless the character is cannonly white its taking representation away from smaller groups like asians or Hispanics.

Ngl, as a black artist, when I first heard about Blacktober I was thinking it would be about black artists showing off their projects / black OCs for the month. In my opinion, it's a huge missed opportunity to showcase the black experience using OCs instead of remakes of already existing canon characters.

Honestly anime was really the only Asian rep I got in school. So when I see people changing them it kinds hurts to see we can’t have anything to ourselves.
That’s exactly how I feel, I got someone who I thought was a friend yelling at me when I voiced my uncomfort as someone half Japanese when people blackwash already Asian characters (and in general too but that’s besides the point). Yes, I’m aware that black people have less representation in media and it does suck a lot. But that’s not an excuse to change the race of a character to fit you better. Characters with pale skin aren’t always white and characters with dark skin aren’t always black. If you want representation create fanart of poc characters that exist, create your own ocs, etc. There’s many more healthier and better ways to show black representation.
So many people just see light skin and think "white." But what they don't realize is that by making those characters in anime (which most of them are japanese/asian) they're taking away another representation. Anime comes from Japan, it makes sense why there are so many Japanese characters. Doesn't make it any more okay even if they were white.

This is my personal opinion so just hear me out, I never liked race bending.
It feels wrong to completely change an aspect of a character that is, well, a huge part of them. I'm Hispanic (Puerto Rican to be exact) and if I saw someone change an originally Hispanic person to a white or black or Asian person then it just feels wrong and rubs me the wrong way. I feel like race/ethnicity plays an important role in a person, and when you change their race, you're essentially changing the person from who they originally were. I always thought it'd be better to create your own new characters with different races rather than change a character, because, in the end, that character will always remain white, black, etc. Wouldn't you want something fresh to look at? Because imo I just feel like it would make you feel even less representation by making a character what they're not. I understand wanting to be represented, but no matter what race/ethnicity, to me it just doesn't feel right.

It's more of a personal thing for me, from my personal experience, changing someone's skin tone tends to have more racist intentions when genderbending usually doesn't have sexist intentions
I really disagree with the beginning part of the video. Yeah, I'm from Nigeria and a lot of what you said about how we viewed darker skin character in the shows/media is really incorrect when it comes to me and the friends I grew up with. Generation Z is taught from age 3 onwards to not judge people based off of their skin. These ideals have been drilled into us for nearly 2 decades, that's why its rare to see someone of Gen Z be legitimately racist. Many other kids and I didn't care about what the skin tone of the characters was because it's not important, and that's how it should be. When you speak to other people you shouldn't care about their race or their sexuality, you should care about THEM as a person. The same mindset applied to the way my friends and I viewed things. We didn't care because it wasn't important. In fact, we even joked about all characters in shows being white. The race of a character shouldn't be what makes them special, it's the way they think and act. That's why so many kids look up to anime characters like Naruto and Goku. I'm not here to speak on behalf of all black people but hat's just how it was for me and like 90% of black people I know. I don't think we'll ever move past this if seeing a black superhero or something deserves special attention. People think that giving shit like that special attention is helping the cause but its really only hurting it. This stuff should be normalized, not special.

As a Black person myself, I don't understand why the people participating in Blacktober choose to draw White and Asian characters as Black instead of... just drawing canonically Black characters like Static Shock, Black Panther, Cyborg, Green Lantern (there's a Black version of him as far as I remember), especially since I come from the NSFW community, where giving characters darker skin is a common fetish (because of the gyaru subculture). Recently I saw someone posting a Black version of Cure Black (character from Futari wa Pretty Cure) and INSTANTLY remembered of a ero-comic I saw one day which featured the same character being transformed into a gyaru (i.e. dark skin, light hair).
Besides, one can just pair their Black OC with a Black version of a canon character, there is such thing as OC X Canon, after all, and they are already exploiting the racism (White characters get more publicity than Blacks, so just pick, say, Superman and make him Black), so just try to exploit more!
If I participate in Blacktober someday, I would mix the fetish stuff with my Black OCs AND other canon Blacks.
And, for last but not least, WHERE ARE THE... "DUAL-COLORED SKIN CHARACTERS"?
Honestly I was kinda turned off by it. I dont find pleasure in changing other character for the "better". At first I thought it was gonna be something to highlight black character but apparently not. A real missed opportunity, all they had to do was look for them. I dont get why people delude themselves into thinking that good black characters just don't exist in anime, cartoons or other things🤔

There are too many good black characters in anime and ESPECIALLY comics. If I told you to name 10 Asian superheroes on the spot at best you could name 2, let alone the ones the aren’t stereotypes and use chi, Kong-fu, Samurai swords, etc.

Imo, I don't like racebending in general. It's just never been a thing I enjoyed drawing or anything. But seeing the blacktober tag isn't harming anyone. And the art is really pretty. Its just for fun and no reason to attack any of the artists.

Imagining a character as black is alright, but drawing them as such and claiming that you fixed them is still racist. Not only is that going to have offensive implications depending on what you found wrong with the character, but there are also many different races that happen to be pale skinned. "Fixing" a character such as one from an anime or similarly Asian medium/setting is essentially being racist towards many Asian nationalities, and still doesn't help with anything
I agree with you. Its unfortunate that for some reason people think overwriting a character's race is giving meaningful representation, and that they forget black and white people are not the only races on this planet, let along not the only race in AMERICA, the melting pot country

I'm really sorry Yukibunns, I'll have to disagree with your points, although yes black people should get more spotlight and should be represented in the right/good way in anime, movies etc. This is not the way to do it. Whitewashing and Blackwashing are both equally bad, because whether or not you changed their backstory or some other aspects, you are still changing someone's race. The people who make these characters, make them the way they are for a reason. Race should not be changed, its apart of these characters and its apart of us too. If we really wanna stop bad representation of black people, we have to do it in a way that doesn't change other peoples already existing creations.

There's a whole twitter page called " Turning you're faves black " and they are literally blackwashing white Asian characters and people in the comments are like "so cute!!" "Hot" or "They should have made this character black tbh" , I would say that it's incredibly disrespectful and to top it not even asking permission from the artist to make the character black. I don't really think it adds to representation. Regardless of what race you change a character it'll still be that original race. It literally does nothing and for that I find getting mad over it weird. It wipes no representation from other groups either because the original character is still whatever race it was before, and the creators of whatever show or piece of fiction isn't gonna start drawing the character that way cause a bunch of people started drawing the characters a different way. I really like blacktober and actually think it's pretty neat. I just don't claim it gets black people more representation. Nor do I think it wipes other representation. Representation is seeing people who look like you in mainstream media not on twitter, which is what a lot of communities honestly need more of.

However, I'm not offended when I see a character with pale skin because I know that this character (in anime) is asian, because no one specified that they AREN'T.
Blackwashing and whitewashing are both things I don't want to see nor take part of, because it feels like I'm being racist towards another race. I don't want to be known for saying, "This color is OK because it's (insert race)."
I know it takes alot of time and effort to make a character, but I still feel you should make your own characters.

This is going to be controversial but eh I’m already pretty controversial. I think that instead it being just abt black people, blacktober should be about all POC. Like Native Americans, Hispanics, etc. Because those people often don’t have representation of their culture which I think is pretty sad. Like yes I do think black people don’t get a lot of representation but I always remember what one of my friends said to me.I was talking about Black Lives Matter and she said “What about all lives matter? I’m a POC but I’m not black. But I still should matter right? I don’t see why it’s just them.” And it honestly stuck with me. We should have a month for all POC. Just to show that they matter too.

I'm black too, and I don't entirely whole "we need more black representation thing" OBVIOSLY I get that they're aren't a lot of black characters in cartoons or anime, but I didn't really see how changing a characters skin color makes a difference really. Their personality is still the same, they're still the same despite their color. I've been able to relate to many white characters growing up, I grew up with the powerpuff girls also thinking I could be like them and looking up to buttercups boyish attitude, I loved Mable from gravity falls relating to the sibling rivalry from the show too. So It does not feel like just changing the color of their skin really does anything. Yeah they look like me, but are they really like me? You could color any other character black, but are they really like me.

Nairu i think its ("blackwashing) a mix of some things: 1. we ofc want representation of black characters cause obviously black anime characters arent seen as much in anime & 2. we just want to have fun making a character we really enjoy be like us and it makes us happy & 3. ah I'm sorry. Didn't really like this video. I know I know, everyone can have their own opinion but like I generally don't agree with this specific one. Now, before I say anything else, I feel like I somehow have to say I'm justified at all in saying anything on this matter solely because I am also black. (and while I sorta get why, I also kinda don't agree but like, that's entirely situational, so-)
I don't really like race bending in general. like at all, no ifs ands or buts about it. I've only ever done something like it once and even then it wasn't racebending. I don't come from a privileged house of any sort. I have like- 0 self confidence and next to none self worth, but that hasn't been due to the media I consumed growing up, but due mostly to how my parents.. well parented. I've grown up watching whatever came on tv, I've had dolls and I've read books. I was pretty well informed on slavery at the ripe age of 14, I've never had to deal with anything like that of the sort however. I like to think that in the city and time I grew up in, I was relatively accepted for my skin color. I am in no way trying to devalue anyone else's experience growing up by saying this, but I have never felt the need to impose my skin tone onto a white or asian person. I feel as it's pretty stupid and unnecessary. I don't feel like it's a productive way to have black people be seen, especially when it comes to media. I think it would be far more productive for there to be some sort of movement to actually get this kinda stuff out there similar to Blacktober but like, with characters that are already black. The media is out there, but it gets buried because it's just far easier to get views when you draw your favorite character as black, rather than to draw your favorite black character. (I'm speaking about this more to the reasoning that this event somehow promotes black visibility. I'm not trying to stop people from having fun, and if that were all it was, like I genuinely wouldn't care.) I mean if you vote with your wallet, why not support black creators and black stories? buy more of these such things, that tells the folks that this stuff does want to be seen, and as a result, more of it will be made. I mean, take Steven's universe for example. A story that features mostly an LGBT cast, paving the way for more shows like it to even see the light of day. While I'm not entirely sure of it's history, I'm pretty sure it, and shows like it didn't get started all because someone drew a headcanoned LGBT character.

As a black poc myself, if you are doing it and claiming you’re “fixing” it then please stop what you are doing and re-evaluate yourself, but other than that I don’t have a problem with it. Literally all it is black poc artists trying to see how one of they’re favorite characters would look if they looked a little bit more like them. All they are trying to do is have fun doing some character designing and being happy that they can really and truly see themselves in their favorite character. A lot of you like to use the argument “well you’re erasing Asian poc” so firstly you guys are aware that dark skinned and black/Asian people do exist right no one erasing the Asian part just adding black into the mix, secondly most anime characters race are unidentified like we don’t know what most anime characters are. Totally agree. It just depends on the intent of the artist. If I automatically assume someone racebended a character just to be racist and "fix" them, then that's presumptuous at best. You can't pretend to know an artists' (as in, someone that's a complete stranger to you) intentions unless they openly admit to them. Sure you can speculate on someone's intentions, but like...using speculation as a way to assassinate someone's character--I'm thinking about zami00 in particular because I vividly remember that controversy--is severely problematic.

It’s Asian media made for Asians by Asians in an Asian country, it’s assumed with Asian names that they are Asian in media like anime, which is sold globally more as an afterthought than the point of that media. Unless named and generally stated to be otherwise, they’re Asian! Could they use more diversity in Asian skintones and races (such as Polynesians, Thai, Malaysians) as well as people from outside japan? (African Americans, Latinas etc) absolutely! But different country, different cultural problems, and a lot of the issues and arguments with “western”/(especially American) media shouldn’t be used because a lot of them are centered around cultural issues that just... aren’t in context for other countries!
Its really frustrating to see stuff like this as an Asian American because while sure we’re all trying to get our piece of the representation pie, it’s not a zero sum game, and stepping on other minorities is kinda hypocritical isn’t it?

I was there when it happened. What sparked the whole Nessa thing was that an Asian artist drew and colored it with light tone of her color palette because the artist was doing a light pastel color palette theme. Then an artist from ether Tumblr or Twitter came along and "Fixed" the original art piece, claiming that the og artist is racist for "Making" Nessa white washed, when in reality the artist who "fixed it" just didn't understand that it was a light pastel color theme.
People got angry at the "fixing it" artist because they just came along and started to shame the og artist for being racist when the "fixing it" artist just didn't understand the light pastel color theme, so in retaliation the people just went along and actually started to ether white washed Nessa or just draw her in a more racist manner as a "*fuck up" to the "fixing it" artist.

The thing with black washing is that you are drowning out actual black characters and series to black wash a white character.
So many comics and stories that are genuinely good is getting washed out by white people "being inclusive".
The whole idea of white people trying to be inclusive and taking away from black people wanting to tell stories is damaging.

If you want to write a black character, first thing you need to ask yourself is *why* are they black?

I feel like most people, when there’s a POC in anime, pay attention to just their race/ethnicity. Like, I’ve seen great pretender (and I have strong opinions) but when a POC like Dorothy is shown in clips... A good majority (like 500+) comments are about her is that she is representation. It’s cool their discussing it, because it is rare, but I could barely see anything about her character traits. Like, isn’t there suppose to be more to a good character than representation?
I completely disagree with racebending. I may have nothing against it based on the context, however making a non black character black isn't representation in my opinion. We need more original black characters. And yes I do think blackwashing exists, because its literally just making a non black character black, there's nothing more to it. Totally agree. It just depends on the intent of the artist. If I automatically assume someone racebended a character just to be racist and "fix" them, then that's presumptuous at best. You can't pretend to know an artists' (as in, someone that's a complete stranger to you) intentions unless they openly admit to them. Sure you can speculate on someone's intentions, but like...using speculation as a way to assassinate someone's character--I'm thinking about zami00 in particular--is severely problematic.

Whitewashing and black washing aren’t the same thing. Whitewashing is done with the intent to fix a character and blackwashing isn’t. Blackwashing really isn’t the right word for it because it has a negative connotation. It’s more like reimagining a character instead of “fixing” it in my opinion.

im a poc myself and i understand the struggle of dealing with racism, but idk i don't really like when people take a pre existing character and change their race. to me as an artist myself have never really found that to be appealing. Its way more fun to create your own characters, and to dress them like your favorite characters! there is more creativity in it, more expression in my eyes because it can lead to more interesting discussion around your own characters, and you can build a fanbase of people who are interested in your own characters! and they aren't just there for the work of another persons design, changed to suit their own ideal of what is "right" you don't have to agree that's my view on it, as a poc artist myself.

@@kiki-lk3gg the thing is light skinned and white people have had a plethora of representation, and taking a character these poc like me clutch onto and draw them lighter taps into colorism and can be offensive. Personally I don't get that offended if an individual artist does it because they don't take away from the actual show itself, however I do think its a problem when a large company or established public figure does it.
Over all, wonderful video, but I do have some things I disagree with.
1. "Telling people to make their own representation isn't a good argument because people have already tried, but it doesn't sell." Sure, if you're talking about television, however, it's not as impossible as you may think. We have ample platforms to share our works on. Various sites for writing, Various sites to post web comics, and various video hosting sites to host animation based stories. There are also a lot of people who are willing to invest their time in advertising. You don't need your content to be televised for it to be mainstream. Hell, look at Creepypastas. There are quite a few of them that are mainstream, and common house hold names without being televised. If people focused less on taking and race bending other people's characters for representation, and spent more time building each other up, that wouldn't be an issue. Hell, at that point, some television companies might even start picking some of those up just for the sake of making a profit.
2. "White washing has historically been for bad reasons." Im not going to say that it wasn't past, however I will bring this up. Art is subjective, what may have been true in the past, is not always the case. Some people may want to play around with different visuals, that doesn't always mean they hate the canon. There was a youtuber, a woman of color I will add, that stated there is nothing wrong with having racial head canons. And I personally agree there. You want your Black Wonder woman? Do it. You want your white Static shock, go right ahead. It's not my art therefor it's not my call to make. I personally hate race/gender bending because of the fact that I personally believe it's disrespectful to the creator, but as an artist myself, I respect that people have their head canons and ideas, and I never wish to impede on that. I do however take problem when people feel the need to condone one act, and then chew out another group for doing the same thing. I believe in freedom of artistic expression for all, not just some in certain categories and others in other categories. And that is double standards, which is another point I'll disagree with you on. Sure, you could call it partially justified double standards, but they still are, by definition, double standards, race does not suddenly erase that.
3. You mention that people who do white wash characters need to be prepared for the criticism and backlash. That's fair, but shouldn't that also be applied to the other side as well? Criticism and backlash is a part of the internet, undeniably, but there are people who act like this sort of thing can't and shouldn't be criticized, but then turn to do it to a variation of the same act. That's partly why people are so pissed, is because they see people doing something, and so they want to try and do the same thing with their own spin on it, and come to find they're being called, terrible, racist sacks of shit, and no one can say shit or defend it without being called the same in return. Either everyone should be criticized or no one at all. You can't have it both ways, or that's how more discourse comes to light.
My main opinion on this? I don’t rightfully give a shit anymore. Everyone is being petty about this. I'm on the side of those who do their thing quietly, and aren't intentionally causing harm. So the actual artists on all sides. Not the people bitching in the comment sections, or in the case of the Billy and Mandy piece, the fucker who thought it was chill to "Fix" the art piece by MALICIOUSLY white washing it.
i think we poc should, instead of having ‘blackwashing’ months, should have months like the #drawingwhileblack tag where we show off black or dark skinned original characters we created

As a black teen artist who has turned some of my favorite anime characters into darker skin toned characters it was a fun thing to do. I think as long as your doing it for harmless fun and not claiming you so called "fixed it" then just leave them be.

I do like how you noted that asians aren’t the minority in Japan where anime is created. If we’re talking about anime specifically, there’s a TON of Asian representation throughout the entire genre so to say they’re an underrepresented minority is an odd point to make.
HOWEVER, if the same thing were being done to Asian characters in American media (E.G. Mulan and Avatar The Last Airbender) it would be more of an issue because Asian representation in American media is scarce. It all comes down to context in which a work of fiction is created, imo. When almost every single character in anime as a whole is Japanese, I feel like it’s okay to portray some of the characters as darker skinned when Japanese media is very prolific in modern culture and its ethnic representation is significantly worse than American media (which is already pretty bad).
@nano you’re exactly right and i’d wish more people would understand it. japan has little to no ethnic diversity, and with that fact they’re going to make their content relatable to the majority (which is, surprise, Japanese people) so we shouldn’t get upset over anime. it’s silly to think Japanese animators and mangakas would change their cast to appease people who aren’t even in their country. still with all of that said there should be more representation in other places, which ARE more culturally diverse. granted it has gotten better over the past couple years but it’s still far from perfect.

I agree with a lot of your points but I don’t think the whole “they are not minorities in their own country” doesn’t really mean anything when anime is now overseas and non-Japanese people aren’t the only people interacting with the media. Japanese people such as myself find comfort in being able to consume media that originated from my motherland and tend to share it as is with non-Japanese peers. There are so many things I can relate to in anime and Japanese media in general and I sometimes like to explain the cultural nuances that don’t quite exist in the US.
i'd like to point out that asians aren't represented in western media so we asians tend to create representation for ourselves. anime is created for japanese people to relate to characters that are placed in a setting we are familiar of, it used to provide something that was lacking from a lot of western media. asian media, all from south east west north are for asians (no not just japanese, there are dark-skinned characters represented in most media here too that westerners just aren't seeing.) to enjoy because there are very little of that in the west, so taking anime characters who are established to be japanese is still quite bad than what you guys say it is. taking representation from a different minority and changing to fit yours is not gonna help anyone, if anything that just makes things worse.

Ofc... it's safe to assume that an anime character might be Japanese. Though I read that the second most prevalent nationality (likely to also be protagonist and/or have the setting in their homeland) in anime is even British. Followed by other European nationalities (German, French, Italian) along with China/America. Vietnamese, Taiwanese, Koreans, Thai, Mongolians aren't really represented as much in Japan's anime, so how can we use the blanket term "Asian" when it's accurate to just say Japanese?

Here's something that confused me. People are completely fine with turning a white character black but when people turn a black character white they send death threats?
Most characters in Anime are from Japan a homogeneous country and takes place there meaning that they are also will be the same race at the end of the day. But if it takes place in a heterogeneous country like the U.S there will be tons of characters that are vastly different.
As a black (Mixed, Mom's white) artist, this video is honestly what gave me my final opinion on the whole blackwashing thing in general. I started out years ago as really against it because of the whole double standard thing, then just stopped caring since I didn't have to see it if I didn't like it or follow the artists who did it. Now, this video gave me way more insight into everything and my opinion is "May be weird but do what you want, some of it does actually look pretty cool, ngl." But I'm still not gonna touch it myself with a 10 foot pole because, well... As an artist I know I would absolutely wring someone's neck if they drastically changed my character's design, especially their race of all things, like that.

Also I feel like a lot of anime characters that are meant to be asian look white and have more European features? I would honestly love to see an anime character that looked more asian? If that makes any sense but I feel like that would stop white people from telling other people of colour to stop cosplaying a specific anime character because the character isnt black ya know? But I get where you are coming from and I dont like seeing it either.

Blackwashing is a real thing (I guess you could use the term in both a negative and positive way? idk). It's especially wrong if you take a character of a lighter skin tone and make the skin tone darker saying you "fixed them". I guess you could say it gets a little more complicated with the whole "I just wanted more representation" thing. Even if people want to represent black people more it's still blackwashing no matter the intention of the artist. Not saying that people who do this all have ill-intentions. I would still say it's blackwashing because you are still changing the skin tone of a character. There's nothing wrong with wanting representation. There's also nothing wrong with wanting to change up a character a little. If anything it makes it interesting to see what they would look like if a part of their design was changed up a bit, just don't claim you "fixed" that character. In short, I guess blackwashing can be used for those claiming to "fix" characters. I'm not 100% sure where I stand in this. Please don't attack me, these are just my opinions...
(I used to have such a negative opinion about blackwashing and didn't even try to see it from different angles and that's kinda sad considering I'm black)

I think turning any character a different race is wrong, so turning a black character white wrong, turning a white character black is wrong
edit: it's only okay if that character does not have a canon skin tone, as if that character is an animal and you want to see them human you can make them poc or white, but if the creators have confirmed their canon skin color then you draw them that skin color or if they have a canon race

Things that I've noticed in regards to skin tone-washing:
- It isn't a problem on its own. Most problems tend to come in regards to people claiming that they're "fixing" the characters, which just makes the artist look like an ass.
- It doesn't really add to representation, considering that the original character still isn't the changed skin tone. Making OCs of those skin tones is better for representation.
Now, things are going to get... _tricky._
I've noticed that in regards to darkwashing/blackwashing, a lot of the people that tend to have problems with it are non-black people of color. This includes latino/hispanic, American/Canadian Native, Australian Native, black/African American people with less-dark skin tones, the various Asian groups (i.e. not just Japanese, Chinese, and Korean, but also darker Asian groups), mixed race, and "legally colored" people. While there are people within these groups that have skin comparable to traditionally-black tones, there are also many people that don't.
A lot of the cases of blackwashing that I've seen are not only Japanese characters being drawn darker, but also hispanic and mixed-race people being drawn as black because the character wasn't "dark enough," which is often seen as erasing the appearance of these groups. For many non-white people, seeing characters that are like them get lambasted by artists for not being "black enough," despite it being a black character on the lighter end of their spectrum, a mixed-race character, or a character that was never meant to be black in the first place can be seen as just as offensive as how many people perceive whitewashing and make people from these groups very angry.
For me I don’t really care about “blackwashing” or black edits. As long as you do it so that you see yourself in your favourite character, and don’t call it “fixing” and do it for your own personal fun, go for it!
I personally don’t see why everyone is up in arms about changing a characters skintone. At the end of the day you look up the characters name on Google and its still its original skin tone. Nothing is being “taken away” from you, your ‘ culture and representation” is still present and not changed in anyway. People honestly need to chill out

It’s just a tough thing because we often make things about race and representation - and while having a balance is better than not, the reason to have it is the murky issue that’s hard to identify and hard to solve.
As a black person/artist, I hope for a world where people don’t deny me anything based on race, but also that they don’t give me anything based on my race. It’s a fine line between fixing the imbalance of the past and creating a new balance. I don’t want pity, I don’t want benefits because “we need more black ____” and not because of my own merit as a person, not a “black person.” We are not far from the horrors of the past and we need to fix things (it’s going to take more than just another generation or two), I just can’t wait until race isn’t even a factor. It shouldn’t matter “how many black superheroes do we have verses white,” but I understand the current imbalance and the shift in people’s minds to try and correct that issue. A great example is that I had to preface this paragraph by revealing that I’m black as if that gives my words more merit on the matter or to avoid people seeing this come from the perspective of a non POC. It shouldn’t matter what race I am - but for better and worse, during my lifetime that’s often the first and last thing that will come to mind when people see me. As if that’s all that I am.
We need more equality - yet we must be careful about patronizing the black community instead of providing them genuine respect and equality, and we need to be careful about flipping the table and making black people more important than non POC based on their race alone. We need to strive towards a world where race genuinely doesn’t matter. The time we live in is a growing pain and we are at the stage where it’s “trendy” to be progressive - and while that not ideal since for a lot of people it doesn’t come from a place of genuine respect - it is better than the past and it’s not perfect but it is a step in the right direction and I hope we can all slowly but surely make progress towards a world of genuine equality.

I don't really care how people want to represent themselves in art, art is a way for artists to express themselves. If they want to interpret a character as black then let people have their fun. I just want people to feel safe in their own creations and not feel forced to give up their passion like I had to.
I'm deeply sorry that you had to go through that. No one should ever feel like they can't do what they love because of people nit picking about everything.

I personally don't like nor dislike blacktober.
I support black people, as well as many other nationalities, however, something botheres me about the fact that people can re-Imagine white/Asian characters as characters of colour and people would love it, but when the opposite happens (re-Imagining black characters as white or different nationality), people get mad and get off at the artist.
My second main problem is that if a young child of colour goes onto a website, see's a blacktober character, Google's the characters said name and finds out that they are actually white, it Would be absolutely upsetting to watch. A child would probably get excited to find a character of the same nationality as them, but then would be upset when they find out that they are actually a different nationality.
On the other hand blacktober gives artists creative freedom and allows them to experiment with different character designs that they probably never used before. It also allows people of colour to represent their nationality in the media.
I personally think blackwashing is as real as whitewashing. Please don't get angry at me for this, you may have your own opinion on this matter, however this one is mine. If you claim that you 'fix' characters by making them a person colour, stop, that's fucked up and wrong. Please don't commit a Zeena, you know better than that.

The word "malandro" is commonly use for Criminals in Brazil. Atsuko on the other hand is definitely black.

They do make their own characters. But the problem is the fact they cant think about alternatives like: Lifting up existing POC characters, Bringing up black artists if they want that attention so badly, or maybe trying to redesign racist characters from an anime.
