    Mindy Kaling makes reference to hating this cold open in her book "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me" (I think that's the title). I'm sure you'd love the book. By the way, gotta say, I never find that kind of humor amusing. Poor Kevin--all the time and work and also money to make something he was so proud of, and then it gets wasted. All his anticipation of his coworkers enjoying it and praising it is ruined. Sorry to be a stick in the mud, but I just don't get why stuff like that is funny.

      @milesjesu8050 3 года назад +4

      @@TheBatch62 If I remember right, she didn't give details but her stance was based on that she did not think it was funny. Also it led to a full-on-Kelly fiesty fit with her slamming out of the writers' room, and then the building, "stealing" a case of bottled water on her way out. She was lower on the scale than the ones she was disagreeing with and she says how after she got home she found herself wondering if she still had a job, and if so, how to save face. They called her and asked if she'd be back that day as they were placing a dinner order. So they patched things up very gracefully.

      I see both sides of this debate. Seeing Kevin’s effort go to waste is sad. But,many years ago,I read an interview by Chris Farley (I think) where he said,”Everybody likes to see the fat guy fall down.” Maybe it’s that simple reptilian reaction of our brains that we find funny. Unevolved and dark-yes-but also a part of human nature.

      To me, an avid large-pot chili maker and consumer. That has to be the most iconic and the most tragic cold open ever. Maybe even worse than running over someone with your car. I never laughed at it, but I can't think of a better show and a better character to have that happen to. The only way it could have been better was if there awas any sort of build up to that. Like if he had commented about his passion for making chili or had we known about the occasional "office picnics" beforehand. Anyway, it's an easy 5 out of 5.

    Phyllis' statement is unfair because Michael literally offered everyone the chance to become more with him (fair enough that only Pam came) but they all had their chance and refused. Always rings hollow but I love this episode.

  • @annaapanda

    Controversial: I don't like this cold open, and I also don't like Kevin after about season 5. I think this is the turning point for the character (yes even after Holly thinks he is mentally handicapped.) After this it's just cartoonish flanderization. And I do think the cold open is a bit cruel.

    I HATE this opening, always have. I have this weird personality that thinks of how happy Kevin would be all day with everyone enjoying his chili and how proud he would be for doing a great job. I just can't handle thinking of his disappointment and all his hard work preparing it for nothing. It bothers me to the point that I can't even watch the scene at all. I know he's a fake character on a fake show...again, I know I'm weird. Other than that, great field guide Chris. Excellent job editing! And I LOOOVE Cafe Disco so I'm so excited for the next one!!
