I actually do wear this to formal events, and get a LOT of compliments on it. It depends on your watch face, but the color is really spot on matching all colors you wear. And the quality feels really REALLY solid, like I have granite counter tops that i hit it on by accident, but no dents are on the device. But it is a little bulky, but the leather band becomes smoother over time, and only makes it even more comfy to wear with time. Cant wait for a solid Android wear update, but I am really pleased with the current experience.
Michael, please review the zenwatch when you get your hands on it. I'd love to hear your thoughts on what many consider the best looking wear offering on the market
After much consideration over the weekend I did purchase this from Amazon.I was torn between this and the 360 but that black bar at the bottom of the screen was really screwing with my OCD. Hopefully I will have made the right choice! I've never owned a smartwatch before but I do genuinely think this is going to become the future and I really like the way that Android Wear is going. The main thing I'll be using this for is whilst at work and in the car. Having navigation on my wrist will be hugely beneficial, and being able to see my notifications at work without taking my phone out will be so helpful too. My boyfriend bought the moto 360 today too, so at least I will have some comparison to see what I missed out on!
Great video. I watched this and then went and bought the G Watch R! Great watch, no regrets! The price is more than the others, but now i have it and in a couple of months I won't miss the bit of extra cash, but I will have a really sweet watch on my arm!
For me, I dont mind a small black bezel on the moto 360 and a bit less dens display... It is not worth more money. Moto 360 looks better(i am not active person, i dont need robust device) and it has bigger display. Moto 360 is just as good.
You may not mind the bottom bezel, or the less pixel dense display, but they're not the same. Different screen tech, bigger battery, a true always on feature. Plus a real ability to use nearly any watch band, the GWaR is the better device. If the Moto had equal or better specs, we'd hear about it. In this case, all we hear are excuses as to why they aren't that important
Great review Michael! I've got my gwatch r and I couldn't be happier. The voice recognition is actually really good on my end at least ! Can't wait for the big update!
I don't want need a smartwatch now especially in the early stages. But I have to admit that in the future I will definitely get one. Once the platform matures....
I sold my Moto 360 and bought this. Got tired of choppy animations, poor and unpredictable battery life, shoddy screen, flat tire, and general lag and sluggishness. This watch is the bomb.
Here in Switzerland the G Watch R is actually lower in price than the Moto 360 and it was also available earlier. But at the moment they are all sold out. Still waiting for my black Moto 360!!
Its only 10% more expensive than the Moto 360 in the UK and has the latest tech, so is more future proof. Along with a bigger battery, nice screen and more rugged build quality, I am surprised if that price differential would be a deal breaker. Mine has bugs, it disconnects every two days so I have to reboot the watch, but other than that it easily lasts two days and charges in less than an hour.
Wait, the MS Band is also IP67, if I remember rightly. Why do people knock it for not being water resistant while this is being called rugged (not specifically aiming this remark at you, Michael. I've seen a few reviews knock the MS band for "lacking" decent water resistance)?
So... Sorry for my ignorance but would buying this or a current Android wear not be a good idea because of Lollipop? Or will this be updated to current models?
Were you able to play with it at all linked with a apple device? I am not a fan of the futuristic Apple Watch design and would rather have a contemporary design. I have read features are limited are you able to provide any updates or links I may be able to browse? Thanks
I really like how the G Watch R looks as opposed to the 360 but that's just my personal preference. The price is indeed quite steep. I guess it's probably better to wait a while longer before getting a smartwatch as competition heats up, prices should go down & tech should get better. Oh, and is it too much to ask to get a smartwatch that lasts at least a week?!? We really need a new screen type (probably between OLED & e-Ink) or even better battery tech. I'm just wondering why Samsung or LG hasn't considered developing a kinetic generator (like they have in old self-winding watches).
Sticking with my pebble steel as nothing has come out that beats it for ease of use, bid quality and looks It may not have all the bells and whistles but I don't want a smartaccessory, I want a smartWATCH
I just got the R watch for $268 shipped. Is it worth the $50 more than moto 360? No.. Is it worth $18 more? Yes.. Especially with 400mhz more cpu power and bigger battery... Moto is already falling behind.. Didn't take long. Zen watch is really th he best bang for the buck right now but i wanted a full circle screen.
Michael, I've been waiting for your extensive review for Samsung Gear S. I dropped $340 dollar on eBay for this smartwatch that is coming to be delivered on first week of December.
I bought one, used it a week, sent it back for refund. The battery life is really a problem : I ended up every single day with less than 10% battery remaining. If you're on the go, make sure you don't travel a too long period of time away from a wall socket. Long flights are a no go. Oh and take along the bulky charger too by the way... It's not solid, not even close to solid : the plastic on the back is a cheap soft PVC that breaks lose at the lightest shock. The steel case in not anodised but painted with a really thin layer of paint, that started to chip away on mine on the top of the case after only a couple of days ! Scratch resistance is close to zero. The user experience is poor too : the clock doesn't even run smoothly, the sweep second hand sometimes hangs or even backtracks like on your video @ 6:29 and for a watch, not getting a precise time is quite a letdown. Let alone the broken voice recognition, lame launcher and every other frustrations that come along with android wear... No speakers, that means no alarm clock, a function even cheap plastic toys watches do have... A true disapointment in my opinion, and I gladly went back to a more regular watch that have a battery that can survive a trip to, at least, say, Mars...
Having none of those problems thankfully. Can go 2 1/2 days without charging, and it's always accurate. I heard some defective models with faulty Bluetooth would constantly unsync wasting battery and giving the wrong time. Maybe you drew a bad lot?
yeah same, none of these are problems for me and I have owned mine for maybe, like 2 months now. Sounds like you had screen brightness up and didnt give it a chance. On full backlight i pulled 1.5 days use, on lowest settings i got about 3 days of use, which impressed the hell out of me.
Chase Null He likely doesn't own one and just wanted to hate on it. Every reviewer I have listened to say it feels very solid and stout. Every reviewer touts the battery life. Every reviewer says it is very snappy. Ok if the seconds hand has to sync with something, but that would be expected in my mind. And most would take the watch off at night and use a real alarm clock or cellphone, so why does a watch need to?
I did own one. Wanna bet ? I could send you a pdf of my amazon invoice. And I also worked 4 years in the watch business and I can tell you from my experience, smartwatches are, at the moment, very poor watches, they are cheaper looking, made of undurable metal at best, plasticky at worse, far from similarily priced real watches in terms of construction quality, and have a battery that's just a joke. I do believe in the concept though, but true goodness shall come from watches makers in my opinion, like maybe Seiko (that nvented all the major modern innovations in watches like quartz, automatic systems, perpetual calendars...), not from phone makers, that do not yet understand the requirements to make a watch a good watch. Right now the smartwatches are to regular watches what a swiss army knife is to a Rambo's knife. Versatile, yet very poor for the main usage compared to the former... That were my two cents, for free :)
Spyro Le Dragon Given your supposed "experience" in the watch "industry", if you are comparing a high quality collectors watch to ANY smartwatch, no matter what the build quality is lower in the smartwatch. But that is NOT the reason why people buy them. It is for the functions they can do, the information they can provide at a glance is meant for pure luxury in the up-most sense for the tech savy person who wants to stay up in the times. Like it or not wear-able tech is the future. Collectors watches are still nice, dont get me wrong they will never be gone from the world, but they are in a separate category all together. So do not compare the two of them, since its like comparing a model T vs a prius. Both are nice, people love both of them, and they can do similar things, but people buy them for different reasons. If you didn't like the G Watch R for the reasons you listed, then you will not make ANY other smartwatch at all. As for me I have worked in electronic sales for over 5 years, and I currently work for a cellphone carrier(not ATT, I ordered my watch), and I can tell you one thing. There are select customer demographics for every item sold. You are not a Smartwatch customer, and with the feedback you have given, I would not recomend you buying ANY smartwatch, wether its Android Wear, Tizen, Pebble, or Apple, none of them will be what you are looking for. Not because they are bad products, but simply because this is the birth of a new technology all together DIFFERENT from the current world of timepieces you are used to.
Good and fairly accurate review as always. Though I can't seem to agree that the watch performs consistently. I own one by the way. There are times that the watch just hangs or lag for some reason. Maybe due to to the apps I've downloaded, or the watchface, I don't know...
Still far cheaper than an entry level swiss mechanical watch and on par with entry level swiss quartz/mid range Japanese quartz. I think LG is aiming at mainstream consumers and watch collectors with their design and pricing.
The Moto 360 isn't YET available from where I live (Philippines), so I have to settle with the G Watch R here. It's great if not considering the high price tag, though I wished the 360 had arrived here sooner...
It's really awesome and better battery, screen performance, but design wise that Moto 360 looks so much more elegant and expensive. It's a really tough choice. I think the 2ng gen Moto 360 will take the cake
Great review as always. The hardware is probably one of the best, and if the 360 is any indication, future updates can definitely fix any software problems the G Watch R has at the moment.
Marcus Thomas I've said that a few times before. A watch is more about form rather than function, especially in the case of Android Wear where the software is the same no matter which device you buy.
I have to agree about the price: the extra cash difference simply isn't justified compared to the competition. Also, am I the only one that noticed it suffers from "Bezel Inception"? A bezel inside a bezel! Yes, there's a thin black, blank bezel directly surrounding the entire tiny screen then there's the bigger, numbered bezel surrounding that... Leonardo DiCaprio would not be pleased! Ugh...
I'm thinking about getting this watch, but I read on the Verge review of this watch that the watch won't even show time if it's not connected to your phone. Is this true?
I have a question please abut the watch . You see I have now my Samsung galaxy s3 for more than 2 years I happy with it and payed a lot for it wen it was new and after so much using it I just changed the battery you have too . So my question is if I am willing to buy this watch and o will let the screen on because I like the look charging it every day no problem after a year or 2 I have to change the battery . So how it is done or could it be done is it expensive ?
1:00 For every smart watch buyers, price barely matters. All they want is the looks, sophistication and some utility. If this sold for $100 more, it will still be sold out. A person who buys a gold Cartier doesnt care if its worth $5000 or $6000. The pricier it is, the more exclusivity and snobbism it brings along.
Lol are you full of shit or what? I bought my watch for utility, as many other buyers have done. Btw, Cartier watches are of very high quality, made of precious materials and last for unbelievable amounts of time, that's why they cost so much.
Mike Messiah what the fuck are you supposed to buy it for? To show off like a douche? Not me, I actually have a need to be able to quickly take notes, and since I have quite a bit of stuff to carry around with me I can easily lose a train of thought just looking for my phone in my bags. It might not be useful to you but it sure as fuck is to me.
First decend looking android watch. When battery life in these wil get to two days on continuously and when they get qi-charging I'll get one. I don't get it why they're making them with proprietary docks when you could make them use standard qi charging. What would be more convient to just throw it on charging plate instead of inserting it on that one charging dock which might not be around when needed. Though obviously better dock than some horrible usb-connection.
I don't get the whole smartwatch thing even now. When we want to reduce clutter they aim to complicate things even more. If I really had to buy a wearable I'd go for the Microsoft band. At least it does something perfectly than everything.
Ash K You can say it, but that doesn't make it true. We spent a good amount of time talking about the flaws in the Moto 360 display: Moto 360 Review: A Stainless Steel Circular Smartwatch ^M
I don't recommend buying any lg smart watches because they will just screw you over again like they did with the lg g watch. It was way overpriced and didn't have very good build quality. Best buy realized this and not to long after launch dropped the price over $60.
It is expensive but it costs money to make a good watch. This will probably be the only watch able to compete with the apple watch. Moto 360 is cool but it uses inefficient older hardware which makes battery life really bad and performance not that great.
Pocketnow thanks for the response I hadnt realized they updated wear to be more efficient. I definitely like the P-OLED display on the LG G Watch though.
thekapeboy ;) thank you. I like how each individual pixel lights up on it's own. It makes the G watch's screen actually look like a watch face instead of a backlit LCD panel.
1:46 - You mention how the numbers serve no purpose but to breakup the thick bezel. You are stupid - to put it politely (as this angered me to hear). The numbers serve a great purpose and make the watch look better in my opinion. The numbers indicate the minutes / hour (top mark), just to let you know as you believe they serve no purpose. This is helpful for most people to indicate the time quicker than normal. A lot of people find this rather useful, and I love having numbers on the bezel of almost all my watches - besides the ones that have them inside the watch face.
Got mine today for 150€. Brandnew. I prefer the look from the Moto 360, but the Watch R is superior, and I love the look as well. I lovin it so far.
I got my G Watch R on Friday last week. It's really good. Two days battery, Good build etc.
Defintely my favorite looking android wear watch so far. I am not in the market for one, but it beats the flat tire on the Moto 360.
Michael, please review the zenwatch when you get your hands on it. I'd love to hear your thoughts on what many consider the best looking wear offering on the market
I'm still so proud of my Casio watch. nothing fancy, just a piece of black rubber!
I really don't get why they say this is not as high quality looking as the flat tired moto 360.
Edward Martinez Maybe it's because they don't like the bezel. IMO the G Watch R looks heaps better.
redlightmax agreed
I know it's late but mine is arriving on Wednesday. Can't wait. Got it for around 190$
Would be nice if you guys could do a Zen Watch review too. So far prefer the G watch though
For me, I dont mind a small black bezel on the moto 360 and a bit less dens display... It is not worth more money. Moto 360 looks better(i am not active person, i dont need robust device) and it has bigger display. Moto 360 is just as good.
Yeah haha these two devices are the nicest looking ones. Now its just up to personal choice
You may not mind the bottom bezel, or the less pixel dense display, but they're not the same. Different screen tech, bigger battery, a true always on feature. Plus a real ability to use nearly any watch band, the GWaR is the better device. If the Moto had equal or better specs, we'd hear about it. In this case, all we hear are excuses as to why they aren't that important
fhhh haha I like the gwatch more! I'm just saying obviously its popular for a reason. The 360 also looks refined
The Moto 360's display is awful though.
Noah Lach How? I mean, i dont notice the diffrence in ppi. Only in screen tech, where i prefer lcd.
5 stars for effort, but $300 for that is too much, nice review BTW
Great review Michael! I've got my gwatch r and I couldn't be happier. The voice recognition is actually really good on my end at least ! Can't wait for the big update!
I don't want need a smartwatch now especially in the early stages. But I have to admit that in the future I will definitely get one. Once the platform matures....
I sold my Moto 360 and bought this. Got tired of choppy animations, poor and unpredictable battery life, shoddy screen, flat tire, and general lag and sluggishness. This watch is the bomb.
With technology going the way of the wearable so fast, the first Pip-Boy is but a few years away.
Here in Switzerland the G Watch R is actually lower in price than the Moto 360 and it was also available earlier. But at the moment they are all sold out. Still waiting for my black Moto 360!!
Cool to check the weather by looking out the window.
I really hope the moto 360 holds up even after the upcoming update, considering the older processor.
Its only 10% more expensive than the Moto 360 in the UK and has the latest tech, so is more future proof. Along with a bigger battery, nice screen and more rugged build quality, I am surprised if that price differential would be a deal breaker. Mine has bugs, it disconnects every two days so I have to reboot the watch, but other than that it easily lasts two days and charges in less than an hour.
does it have access to simple fatures like stopwatch and coountdown timer? Does it have a 'sleep monitor' function? Thanks for anyone's feedback
Wait, the MS Band is also IP67, if I remember rightly. Why do people knock it for not being water resistant while this is being called rugged (not specifically aiming this remark at you, Michael. I've seen a few reviews knock the MS band for "lacking" decent water resistance)?
Excellent review and shots. Answered all my questions nicely, thanks guys.
Hi, great review, one question, how do you get Facebook or Twitter notifications on this smart watch
Thanks

The issue with using oled is that it is less visible outdoors.
I have to admit i can listern to your reviews all day long
Outstanding review.
The no 30 is little awkward on that beautiful smart watch.
Sticking with my pebble steel as nothing has come out that beats it for ease of use, bid quality and looks
It may not have all the bells and whistles but I don't want a smartaccessory, I want a smartWATCH

Scratch resistance is close to zero.

I wonder if LG will bring out a new model about a month before the Apple Watch is available in stores.
Soooo.. when is it coming to Canada?.. We don't have the Moto360 either.
Good and fairly accurate review as always. Though I can't seem to agree that the watch performs consistently. I own one by the way. There are times that the watch just hangs or lag for some reason. Maybe due to to the apps I've downloaded, or the watchface, I don't know...

now this a good review! good job sir!

It's a really tough choice. I think the 2ng gen Moto 360 will take the cake
... An unmade device is better?
hi, im looking into one of these to go with my note 4, whats the battery life like?
Could you please specify what type of face has it...I'm worry about scratches
Can this watch work with iPhone I was told we could download a soft ware and it was comparable just not sure
Really nice device. Wish it ran a different OS.
Great review as always. The hardware is probably one of the best, and if the 360 is any indication, future updates can definitely fix any software problems the G Watch R has at the moment.
I wished I didn't have problems with mine..i really miss it. Oh well
Orion Pax maybe the G Watch R 2 lol
Seems like choice of smart watch boils down to aesthetics.

Mike Messiah what? Lol
Moto 360 2nd Gen will, hopefully, fix the issues of the current version and dethrone the G Watch R.

can i use it with my asus zenfone 2 ?
Snapdragon 400 processor?!?! My budget phones have the same thing and run smooth.... That watch must be a fast watch!
does this watch have running features so I can track my run
I've gotta say, ever since Taylor left Micheal's reviews have gone up another notch. (Most likely since he's testing the devices longer.)
Alve Rolle All that heartbreak's gotta go somewhere. ^M
Pocketnow Lmao.
Whats that watch face at 3:30? Does it come stock?
Please review the gear s
Can I use it for my blackberry Z10?
does this watch vibrate or show any notification on phone call?
It also has a full circle screen. Rather than the Moto 360
Hi Sir, my lg g watch r has batt issues and doesnt reboot anymore...help pls
Will there be metal bands
Can I just say he says that about the other Android watches their all have beautiful displays
Ash K You can say it, but that doesn't make it true. We spent a good amount of time talking about the flaws in the Moto 360 display: Moto 360 Review: A Stainless Steel Circular Smartwatch ^M
Can someone tell me if there is a keyboard app for this device? THANK YOUU
Beautiful!!! LG done great job!!
Now that the price of this watch has come down, is it worth buying this watch to use for a couple years?
It is; if you for example go running while it rains, it will not be damaged like other smartwatches.
Sweet. It's a sharp looking watch. Can't wait to get one
Chris Kilts Cool, it's a pretty good watch, with a nice design and it is well suited for a rough hike or run :)
do you know how much the LG G Watch R costs now?
I think LG has something going but they always hike the price a bit too high than usual...
Give me a updated version of this. Amoled, snapdragon 2100, nfc. Done
I really want the LG R watch, but the $300 threw me off. Asus Zenwatch for me.
will it work on one plus phone ?
น่าใช้..แต่รอดู Samsung Gear S2 ก่อนดีกว่า ได้ข่าวว่ากำลังเปิดตัวอยู่ที่เบอร์ลิน...
does it have to be used with lg smartphones or can i use it with any ohter phone that i want ??
Any android phone with Android 4.3 or higher
Very nice
if I go to a beach will it survive? how long?
what is the actual price of this watch
And what about moto 360?
Better of waiting for LG G Watch R 2 in 6 months time.
This or sony smartwatch 3?
I got the original Samsung galaxy gear is that gonna get android wear??
Sad face
Root it and have more fun :D
what apps / games can you use on it?
If you are bored in class
Awsome video!!
SirPhilips89 Thanks! ^M
Who would have the G watch R and a purse?
so if im listening to music on my phone can i change the songs and pause an play all from the watch?
Yup
Harrison Relf Awesome.
Cool smartwatch..
Its more compelling than the 360
300? 50 more bucks and you got your self a one plus one ha even though i already got one but that is alot of money for a watch to a guy like me
where can i get it?
either online or a store nearby
does it stay on?
Yes
Amazon wants $ 569.00 for this Watch !! I Don t think So !!!
I don't recommend buying any lg smart watches because they will just screw you over again like they did with the lg g watch. It was way overpriced and didn't have very good build quality. Best buy realized this and not to long after launch dropped the price over $60.
No NFC no GPS
It is expensive but it costs money to make a good watch. This will probably be the only watch able to compete with the apple watch. Moto 360 is cool but it uses inefficient older hardware which makes battery life really bad and performance not that great.
Sean Bilstad Those issues have been corrected in the latest version of Wear. LG G Watch R vs Moto 360 ^M
Pocketnow thanks for the response I hadnt realized they updated wear to be more efficient. I definitely like the P-OLED display on the LG G Watch though.
Sean Bilstad It's P-OLED :)
thekapeboy ;) thank you. I like how each individual pixel lights up on it's own. It makes the G watch's screen actually look like a watch face instead of a backlit LCD panel.
Big upgrades coming soon.... 2.5 years later. Lol
