    I like my magpul bipod. What it gives up in stability, it gains back in light weight and affordable. It served me well Sunday in the Florinthian shootout stage of your match. Atlas bipods are nice, but they aren't $300 nice. That's the cost of a decent carbine course.

    Good discussion. I have four different bipods; Tiptop (Harris knockoff), Atlas BT10, Accu-Tac SR5, and MagPul. Of the four, the Accu-Tac is the sturdiest followed by the Tiptop. My preference for most of my shooting is the MagPul. As you mentioned, the MagPul is light weight, slick and easy to deploy. The single biggest drawback for me with the MagPul is there is no 45 degree position for the legs. They are either up or down, which is also true of the Tiptop. For a general purpose rifle or recce rifle, I personally think the MagPul is the best choice. You mentioned ARCA rails. I am a big fan of ARCA for the ease of adjustability. My primary setup is a MagPul Picatinny bipod mounted to an Area 419 ARCA to Picatinny adapter. I would love to own an MDT CKYE bipod, but I can not swallow the $700 to $1000 price tag.

    I personally liked the slack in the magpul bipod. It made loading much easier. I run a harris on my Mk12 now, but I have zero issues with the slop in the magpul bipod. I was also used to sloppy bipods being a gunner lol

    I have only used bipods in competition and not very often. Most of the times we shoot from barricades so I use a small, medium heavy, loosely packed rear bag as support under the handguard.
    For hunting I have never used bipod. Only tripod, shooting sticks or the rear bag if I find a log or branch for support.

    Over the years...I've tried a few.
    Grip pod...had one in combat. CHONKY. But works.
    Harris...also in combat. Loved them. Super durable.
    My Chinese Atlas knock-off...super light. Works. I want to hate it, but it just won't die.
    Agree about the quick disconnect. Great feature. Though I've been eyeing the harris mlok just for weight savings.
    As for why you might want one...try holding your rifle while in the prone long enough and it becomes evident. I'll throw in second round accuracy that far exceeds the ability of a monopod. And improved use of optics to boot.
    Best of luck,
    Phil

    ARCA is nice. There's a handful of companies that make small sections that fit onto MLOK: Area 419, Sawtooth, etc. That way the front is still on the slicker side and the bipod can be added when/as needed.
    MDT. just came out with a more budget friendly Oryx bipod for the same price as the Magpie (I'm assuming as competition. Will be interesting to see a comparison video on them.) That said, Harris costs about the same as a Magpie but then you get the coiled up legs, spring adjusted feet, and more with the Harris.

    What is your optimal length bipod closed and extended. In my opinion, i like bipods that colapse to about 6 inches and extend to 12. But i only have experience with bench rest shooting. No running and gunning. Im curious what size people like 🤭 for the scenarios they shoot.

    A large discussion is weight, a very important topic. But you can only remove so much weight right? Barrel profile yes but there are compromises, remove accesories mounted on your rail sure but you lose functionality. A titanium barrel nut absolutely. But how about the rail itself? I have an aluminum mlok rail, normally weighs 13 oz... yikes. I drilled, shaved and removed portions of rail i wasnt using and brought it down to 9 ounces, only 1.3 more than a $300 carbon fiber rail. I removed what i dont use, and saved a third of a pound while losing no function and no structural strength. Maybe you can do the same? Just a thought.

  • @2amichaelj
    @2amichaelj Год назад

    Accu-tac PC4 is probably the best do it all bipod I've owned.
    Magpul bipod can be QD with the ADM mlok to picatinny adapter. You'll have to buy the mount from ADM and put 3-7 slots on your carbines to gain that function so there's that but it works and works well. Better than the Kinetic Developments QD mlok to picatinny Magpul bipod imho.
    Atlas and Harris have worked well but I honestly like the lightweight design of Magpul better or the substantially better Accu-tac bipods. I own 3 different Accu-tacs and they are absolutely fantastic. Pricey but fantastic.

    Love your content on most topics, but not really buying into the lighter Magpul Bipod theme. Magpul's Bipod weighs 11 oz., and when you add an ARMS 17S style QD device you add another 2 oz. for a total of 13oz. An Atlas BT10-LW17 QD Clamp weights 12.7 oz. Even my Atlas CAL BT65-LW17 with a much wider footprint than the Magpul Bipod weighs only 14.5 oz.
    Yes, Atlas Bipods cost more, but that that much more. A Magpul (MAG951) costs around $105. and adding a QD AD-170 Clamp adds another $90. for a total of $195.00.
    The Atlas BT10-LW17 sells for around $270. and the Atlas Cal BT-65-LW17 for around $290. I have short 2" BT73 M-Lok rail sections on each of my AR's and swap the Atlas between them as needed.

      @m118lr Год назад

      ..I don’t quite get the “weight” thing, whatever..the MagPUL bipod EASILY handles whatever’s on the end of virtually ANY carbine/rifle. A muzzle device WEIGHT ‘comparison’?! Maybe you’re talking the “ounces equal pounds” thing I guess..

    • @Jazz3006
      @Jazz3006 Год назад +2

      I was looking for this. It's amazing how often people look at something and say, "well, it's made of a lower density material, so it must be lighter". No, it all depends on the design and how the materials were implemented. I really hate the idea of spending $200 on a wobbly Magpul unit when, as you said, there are Atlas units that are better in almost every conceivable way for just a bit more. It's not like you have to buy a new one of these things for every rifle you have. Just buy one and trade it around across all of your rifles.

    I have the Harris, atlas and magpul bipods, My atlas with QD is 2oz heavier than the magpul, If I were to QD the magpul it would be heavier than the atlas. Atlas for me is more stable, and when using it as a barricade stop feels more secure when I weight it. The magpul is sloppy and slick. However it is a smother designs if I was in and out of vehicles or a pack I would likely use it. It is far beatter then a grip pod or magazine. The harris is a rock, stable and fast, but utalizing it in any other way than a bipod is a pain and It sits on a small bolt gun. Atlas gets my vote
