I'm new to packout. I have the wheeling box, 2 large boxes, a small box and a crate. Unless I have to get something in the bottom box I haven't had any issues yet. Just unlock the lid on the box I need and lift the lid with the stack attached to it. I don't have anything for fasteners yet, I reckon drawers for fastereners would be ideal.
First time I saw packout I laughed (no drawers?). Never bought a single one because of that terrible design flaw. No way on this green earth was I going to unstuck and restack for a tool. I most likely won't buy these new drawer boxes either since they stand to tall stacked. You can't lay them flat either because all your crap shifts inside, so you're stuck unstacking them anyway just to fit in the truck. They are a much needed improvement though and would be perfect inside a converted work trailer.
I know this is old, but they’re still not bad as dedicated tool boxes to keep the garage/ shop organized. Like one per box, and tools you don’t use on the daily. For me it would be the nailer, sawzall, skillsaw, a few other stuff
I love the dewalt stuff in the Milwaukee tool boxes. L Also the tough system 2.0 is really good especially if you need to store larger stuff in the box. I do like the drawers though it looks very convenient. Do they latch together?
T E T R I S ! We already knew this when we first bought the stuff. So now you have plastic version of wooden casework. You could make the drawer units yourself, and use much stronger glides, and make the thing lock far better than Packout does. Now to add wheels, and a worktop... hey wait... that would be a tool chest ! It seems like we are making a circle back to what we used decades ago!
I like the drawer setup. Definitely looks more practical but a panel van would make even more sense. I know it’s not what you want or like but it is way better to work out of
love having my promaster, it is decked out with shelving and tools. i love it when i open the back or side door and people walk by. Every time they are impressed by the custom shelves and all the organization.
I personally like the t stack drawers system. It's the perfect size for tools, allot lighter and cheaper. Also for the garage craftsman versa stak fits on the t stack.
If that is a 6 or 6.5 foot bed you can get a 5.5 foot slider for the truck bed. You can place the new boxes on the slider and you will still have room at the front for your spray etc. The large slider drawer will actually help to hold the gear in front of it (closer to the cab) from sliding around. If those Milwaukee boxes are all a fixed height you could even put a sheet of ply in at the correct height across the bed to allow you to use the bed slider and still have a second layer on top for other tools and materials.
I dig em but not completely sold on drawers yet I'd like to see how they perform long term as far as casters, tracks, the plastic itself. Not saying I won't ever get em but wanna wait.
Yep, I've got tons of Ridgid boxes I've thrown out. I actually built two 5 drawer rolling wood cabinets with 8" tires and a welded handle on the back, but they're so heavy I can't take them up stairs. I can fit so much in them, but the mobility is the issue. Packout currently has the best drawers, but they're crazy expensive and they aren't deep enough for some tools.
Surprisingly decent quality:, HART has a nice portable 22" cantilever box with dividers top & bottom $20. Also, Craftsman has a 3 level Cantilever 80lb capacity w wheels @ Lowes on sale $79. I use for my PA equipment, inverter, mics, cords, etc. The system you got w drawers is rad. The cart with a pullout extension work great for your extra boxes. They might have a weight limit. There's also truck bed false floor toolboxes with pullout drawers for tools. Nobody knows tools are under the fake floor base. Great video.
Great video. Just about to pull the trigger on some pack out stuff and your new strategy was one that crossed my mind. I’m pretty sure I’m going to go that way after seeing this video, thanks. Regarding your back seat…I wonder how it’d work if you screwed a pack out tray to your floor in your back seat then locked in your boxes to that. You could even do several trays and put your most used tools boxes at the doors then you could just open the truck door and your tools are right there. I may try that on my truck when I get my drawers.
Bro I’m glad you posted this. I bought 2 of the regular Milwaukee Packout boxes and I didn’t bother getting more because of how tedious it is to stack and unstack everything. The droor boxes are definitely badass.
Thanks for the insight! Btw, I know it’s not as cool but think of your pick up truck as the obsolete pack out box and a high roof cargo van as the new and improved one! Just a thought after seeing you doubled over in the back of your truck :-)
Especially after he removed the back seats. Now the truck is a dedicated “work truck” & can no longer support the family as a weekend outing camping/ off-roading/ family vehicle.
Exactly. It's what stopped me from buying Packout in the 1st place. Was it just me or wld it have been annoying to unstack everything for access I thought. Now, w/ the drawers I'm all in!! Got the 2&3 drawer & I'll wait til they come out w/ a drawer version of their new Packout toolbox, leaving only the box that integrated into the dolly. Maybe the Hand truck wld eliminate having to unstack the bottom 4 modules altogether?
I have a ram 1500 lone star and I really wanna do the same with my back seat. I love the idea of all the storage space under the back seats but it's a pain to get to them when I have a bunch of tool bags piled up back there. I do keep all my sandpaper and framing squares stored between the seat and the little fold out platform that isn't too difficult to get to
I can agree that the drawers are an absolute necessity, buy for a lot of us, we can't get all of our tools in them. Where would you put your circ saw or recip saw?
I’m returning my packouts to HD and buying the drawers. Where do you store your larger tools that don’t fit in the drawers? Planer, circular saw, belt sander…
Packout, dewalt, ridgid, all of em should just start making everything drawers or even a cabinet maybe. The bottom rolling box should jus be a 1 big drawer or multiple drawers. Have options. I have toughsystem 2.0 and some 1.0 and i primarily leave my bottom box with the wheels empty unless i really need to throw more stuff in there b4 going into the job. I work out even a 17' box truck so i have a lot space for a lot of boxes. I utilize a wall rack in the truck with the arms which is awesome. Working organized is definitely key.
Yup, I just bought 4 dewalt single tstak drawers and it’s the a game changer, everything is organized now except for my sawzaw, circularsaw but will get a deep storage dewalt tstak
You've got to get a van! I make and fit windows/doors and had a land rover defender pick up truck for a few years (my dream wagon) and loved it! I made it work like you're doing and bought a trailer for it. It broke down and I hired a van for a week, WHAT A REVELATION!!! Ended up getting a ford transit custom and wow it makes my life so much easier, and is like driving a car. Trucks are cool but impractical. No more having to tie things on the roof or getting sheets wet in transit.
Thx for your videos. What is your coverage area? How far is too far for you? As a self-employed tradesman, I stay within my zip. But I do a lot of different things. As a finish carpenter, I would imagine I would have to cover more area to stay busy.
Just got my 2 drawer packout they are nice also milwaukee makes wall mount racks for the drawers that might work for the back seat so you don't have to use bungee cords
I built wooden drawer slides that are 20 inches high, go as high as u want , I used 3/4 plywood on everything, used furniture wax on plywood, I have a lot of weight and it still slides great, the top even slides out , u have to drill enough holes on the back of the box that the drawers are in because of the suction, I will never go back to anything else, I can fit a ton in it, I would say one has to be 300 pounds , should weigh them , decked drawers don't make them deep enough.
As a retired trim carpenter, you dont have to convince me that it's more important to spend money on tools, rather than a new pair of shoes for mama....lol
Might consider mounting a few of the packout mounting plates in the back. Will allow full access to the drawers anytime you need them (the bungee cord might get I the way). Cannot seem to find the 2 drawer sets anywhere though.
I have pretty much all the old packout boxes, they are really good to store bulky tools. I pretty much have all the main carpentry Milwaukee cordless tools, and I think it'll be a pain in the ass to store them in the drawers. i fit 2 impact drivers, 2 grinders , 2 drills and one nail gun and planer + 2 batteries in the big briefcase. but for small stuff the drawers will be perfect.
The dewalt drawers lock themselves in place so you don't need that silly bar infront of them. The reason I stopped using these things is because if they tip over or jump around in my van then everything gets mixed up. They stay in my shop now!
I waited for the drawers, since I have drawers for Festool Systainer. For Festool, the box will slide out. But they are pretty small. And I needed my Sawzall into the box. So I waited. I have two drawers at the bottom. Three drawers in the middle and XL box at the top. And I have a radio in between and have the socket wrench at the top of XL box. Love them
You could carpet that platform in the back seat and it would help a ton to dampen the noise of them bouncing around and also keep them from sliding around
Slide out drawers for everything! Your back seat replacement platform needs to be on full extension slides. Just pull out the platform tray to get to your drawers.
I tried to stay away from Packout for a long time but the drawers made me cave. I just couldn't justify the price so I bought the Husky 22" connect system and it worked great but it still has the same downfall of having to unpack everything. I do like that it was much thinner than packout but the drawers make my life so much easier. I do a lot of commercial rollouts so being able to bring all my tools in and only take up a little space is a big deal for me.
Hey Google T Dula carts. They make custom hand trucks that mount to your hitch with a custom release mechanism. You could mount those boxes to the cart and never have to lift them again.
You can get packout bases and bolt them to your seat delete panel to fix the drawers in place in the cab. No sliding and you won't have to worry about strapping them.
Brother, I've been saying that for years now ... i've been a diesel mechanic/welder for 35 years and have only ever used toolboxes with drawers or soft bags for service calls .you're going to have way more room and you're not gonna be limited as to how you can organize your tools. I realize carpenters can't have metal toolboxes due to weight but at least with drawers you can access everything so much easier. good job of recognizing that, I'm sure you'll be able to sell all those pack out easily. Man, the time you're going to save woo wee.
DIYer here, I have a garage full of Festool boxes, I do not complain of how much it costs me to organizes my stuff, I just started researching and buying Milwaukee products and it’s some of the best organized stuff out there and price comparison, great value for the price
I’ve got the 3 tool box on wheels from Home Depot kit and large, med, small organizers. And it’s great I split them up grab what tool box I need ....go to job ! However in the garage I’m going to start another system with tool box with wheels and Two ....2 drawers and a one 3 drawers on top ! Cause it is a pain if you need to get at stuff!
I carry my Packouts in a van cargo hold, so only the rolling cart will fit, no room for the dolly, so I cut a drawer into mine. Now I can wheel my stack to where the job is, pop a few latches and work right out of it.
AMEN Brother ! I always wondered why they didn't do drawer options. I always have to un-stack them as well and it drives me nuts. I've actually bought more hardware, or a tool, instead of digging into the stack.
I really think u need a trailer for ur work even 6*10 will do the job . I was doing what u doing and I always need more space. Then I got a 6*12 trailer and man it's a big Is different . U should try that and u be getting more work done for sure . Thanks for your great work
That's why you get toughsystem and the toughsystem dolly. You can grab the bottom box or the middle without unstacking everything and they have had drawers forever.
Seems Milwaukee got plenty of complaints from guys who bought into the full pack out stack sets. These drawer units are definitely a big improvement - since I have the same complaints about the stack system, especially when they're filled with lots of specialty hand tools, etc
The problem with the Packout drawer system is the drawers are plastic and the bottoms will sag & drag when loaded up with heavy gear. I'm not saying that they are bad, but they are not the perfect solution for everything. They have their place in the Packout line-up, just don't expect them to handle extra-heavy items and hold up in the long run.
Funny when the Pack out came out years ago, I saw the issue of getting tools from the bottom and didn’t purchase any Packout. Fast forward I’m picking up the drawers and the crate bin. Puzzle me who the hell designed the packout at the start, lol
The thing is they didn't sell both items at the same time. One was designed later. The first gens served their purpose for me so I'll keep em and add on. I might leave them at home more.
Get a trailer and a shelving system for your tools. I had a cleaning business and all my supplies had a home and they were secure and out of the weather. This my first time seeing your you tube channel and it reminds me as my business was growing having the same issues.
Had they released is sooner I would have their drawers over the t stak. I have had the DeWalt t stack now for three years and they work well for me. I have to work in right areas and just have no room to unstack.
You can still use the lid ones for the top of your tool box stack. I use the Tstak; drawers on the bottom, lids on the top with the dolly cart. Works great. Or the Toughbox racks/hand truck which allows you to slide a box out.
When tool manufacturers drop there prices drastically on any tool line usually means new stuff is coming out to replace the current models so they can get rid of there old overstocked inventory
I’m thinking of getting the drawers too, but then I’m like hmmm what’s going to happen to my existing packouts 😞 I want it but I do t want my old stuff to go to waste. Problem is they didn’t release the drawers until much later. Early adopters always get screwed. Being the first kid to show it off comes at a cost. Need to find a use for all my packout tool boxes and half containers, and milk crates
Don't get rid of them, yours are still good, so are mine. There is always going too be the New next best thing. I'm going to get (1) 3 drawer and (1) 2 drawer and implement then in to my gear. The $99 cart at the bottom the 2 drawer & 3 drawer then the Large box with two small parts containers and the Crate for loose items off I need too toss it on the Top and I have the work top if I want too or need to throw that on top. I like the originals also, they are sealed up great from the Elements so they do have a great use. I think the drawers are also great for smaller part organization, both styles have there place. People have just gotten a little lazy, a little spoiled and, get sucked into every new product that comes out. I think all of the pack out gear the original and newer items are all pretty cool and will serve us all well for a good amount of time. There very well made, very expensive yes for sure, but they should last for a few bit of years.

You are a funny guy, I love the little bits here and there. Real comedy is rare so thank you.
I love the dewalt stuff in the Milwaukee tool boxes. L
Also the tough system 2.0 is really good especially if you need to store larger stuff in the box. I do like the drawers though it looks very convenient. Do they latch together?
I legit laughed out loud at the ending, thank you for that, I needed it on a Friday :D
That's what I'm saying. The drawer systems are plastic tool chests.
You make THE BEST finish carpentry videos. Period. Plus, you are good on the camera. Chill. Smart. Concise. Good.
Do a giveaway with the old ones. That would be fun!
Bro I’m glad you posted this. I bought 2 of the regular Milwaukee Packout boxes and I didn’t bother getting more because of how tedious it is to stack and unstack everything. The droor boxes are definitely badass.
The boxes are more water tight than the drawers. But yeah. Drawers are better if you don’t need the water proofing.
Looks great. You might look into adding some sort of casters on the bottom units...
Thanks for the insight! Btw, I know it’s not as cool but think of your pick up truck as the obsolete pack out box and a high roof cargo van as the new and improved one! Just a thought after seeing you doubled over in the back of your truck :-)
Came here to say this exactly
I appreciate you getting right to the point and not making me fast forward through 2 minutes of video to see your neat new gear.
All us married tool enthusiasts felt that emotional plea @2:50 but her agreeing to needing more tools is a bit of a leap😅
I’d gladly buy those from you! I’m just starting my own company and always looking for things to help keep me organized.
Thx for your videos. What is your coverage area? How far is too far for you? As a self-employed tradesman, I stay within my zip. But I do a lot of different things. As a finish carpenter, I would imagine I would have to cover more area to stay busy.
Appreciate the heads up, i agree, it saves so much. Please keep us in the loop regarding durability and problems. Be well and stay safe.
There is a 4-drawer Packout available, too. Didn't see it at HD but found them online for sale.
The ending was truly epic. 👍 I needed a good laugh thanks for that!
Rock On . . . 👍🍺🍺🍺
What is car seat? I thought they were always for tools! Gotta keep those babies safe.
You need a transit. 130” wheel base, 3.5 twin turbo, 3:73’s in the back with some hackney shelves inside. It’s a great combo!
I put my hand tools in the drawers, power tools in the boxes, and call it a day.
To help with any sliding in the back seat delete, maybe a packout base? (no wheels)
Check out Bed Rug for your cargo space. It will eliminate sliding tool boxes.
Thanks for your great work
Thanks for the video. I am struggling to get more organized. I did what you did under those saw horses.
Will the old style mate with the new? You could put one of the old style on top of the drawer stack.
Of course….
One question I have is can you use the old system with the new system and have them stack together?
show us again the "walk back in with a smile!" It was great - you are made out for the movies!
Fill the holes in the extension ladders with expansion foam to prevent the whistling.
You can get the plates that the pack out boxes snap into. If you attach them to your truck that might be nicer than bungies
Mechanic boxes also work good, they have drawers, but are usually not easy to move, might be great for a back seat thing though.
Look up "overland truck bed kitchen". Replace the kitchen stuff with tools and you could build a pretty cool "truck bed shop".
Thanks for the great info !!
Do the drawer boxes snap into the original packout boxes ??
You mentioned you'd found a storage system for a Ram with the backseat deleted. I searched but couldn't find anything. Do you have a link?
The thing is they didn't sell both items at the same time. One was designed later. The first gens served their purpose for me so I'll keep em and add on. I might leave them at home more.
Pack out floor/wall mount plate attach to the wood where back seat was. Lock together and no movement.
Get a trailer and a shelving system for your tools. I had a cleaning business and all my supplies had a home and they were secure and out of the weather. This my first time seeing your you tube channel and it reminds me as my business was growing having the same issues.
You got lucky... I've been playing whack-a-mole trying to find those drawers... nobody has them in stock!
Got mine at Napa
Had they released is sooner I would have their drawers over the t stak. I have had the DeWalt t stack now for three years and they work well for me. I have to work in right areas and just have no room to unstack.
You can still use the lid ones for the top of your tool box stack. I use the Tstak; drawers on the bottom, lids on the top with the dolly cart. Works great. Or the Toughbox racks/hand truck which allows you to slide a box out.
When tool manufacturers drop there prices drastically on any tool line usually means new stuff is coming out to replace the current models so they can get rid of there old overstocked inventory
Dewalt makes a hand truck style dolly that i absolutely love. Much easier than unstacking every box individually
