  • Turning left is a complex manoeuvre that often proves daunting for new drivers. Watch the video step-by-step instructions. SUBSCRIBE TODAY! ► / smartdrivetest
    Turning left is a high risk manoeuvre for any driver, but more so for new drivers. Scanning the intersection thoroughly and judging the gap required to safely move through the intersection are learned skills.
    More important, steering the vehicle in the correct path of travel varies with different intersections. To learn left-hand turns, begin with residential streets and back roads. When you become comfortable with left hand turns in quieter areas, move to busier intersections.
    Observe, observe, observe!! Scan the intersection thoroughly and ensure that you look for pedestrians, cyclists & people on scooters on the cross-street where you are turning. And be sure that you have adequate gap between you and the oncoming traffic and that there aren't other road users in the intersection that may block your intended path of travel through the intersection.

    I make sure to check twice before I make a left turn, or any other turns I do when I am driving. I also stay alert with everything that is going on around me. I limit all of my distractions as well.

    the green arrow is the protected turn. Where oncoming traffic stops for you. You can turn on green light, but you have to yield for on coming traffic right?

    • @LyxaMendelle
      @LyxaMendelle 4 года назад +9

      Yes, the person turning on the left side yield the right to the people driving straight (oncoming traffic)

    For new drivers.
    When turning left make sure good observation and always look into the road your going into
    The entrance might have some debris on the road or someone might b at their vehicle so you might have to adjust your turn to take this into account.
    Take your time nice slow speed and relax. when you have completed the turn then build up speed gradually to match the road speed limit and of course weather conditions.
    Be safe and have fun.

    Im a new ish driver id say one thing that eases my anxiety at left turns is to know the other drivers possible moves, so the lights green meaning you dont have to worry about cars coming left or right (check to make sure anyway) so your mostly looking out for cars in front of you and pedestrians to your left definitely eases my worries

    I have a problem with intersections with medians and where to position my car at the medians. At times the medians seem really thin/lean to be a median which kind of puts me in a dilemma if I would be blocking the incoming traffic ( from behind my car). Could you suggest a video on left turn with medians?

      Kind of a late response but for people who has a similar question as this one: if you are in a lane with a yield sign you must let the traffic on the through road have the right of way. You can enter the intersection without stopping if there are no other pedestrians, cyclists, or vehicles in the through road, but you should slow down and stop if necessary.
      This information can be found in the ICBC Learn to Drive Smart manual. Hope it helps :)

      You turn enough to clear the centre line that will be on your left..and don't cross any part of the line on your right hand.
      If your talking about the physics of turning. Stick to taking the bus. We don't need more people with out basic motor functions on the road

    When I did my G2 Entry Exam a couple weeks ago in Walkerton, Ontario, I was told to do a left turn at an intersection by the instructor. I did my signal early and slowed down and stopped at the thick white line. The light was green but I couldn't turn due to a stream of oncoming vehicles still crossing the intersection. A driver behind me starting honking like mad. As far as I could tell I did not do anything wrong and the instructor said nothing. A gap appeared and I took the turn. She told me that I did fine but next time to go further up.
    What did she mean? I did pass the test though.....what a relief because I was positive that I failed.

    Hello Rick, turning left to multiple lanes if you are already positioned on the thick white line and waiting for a safe turn, and didn't proceed bec of the crazy busy upcoming traffic and seeing that cars are not slowing, would that be considered as a failure for a road test?

    Should you move your car past the white line in a big interaction? Some interactions are very wide and it'd be difficult to find a gap if you don't move forward. In that case, how much should you move forward? Thanks!

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 лет назад +4

      Hi Kayung Caleb Lai - Thank you for your comment and query. Even in big intersections for the purpose of preparing for your road test, stay with the steer tires on the front crosswalk line. When you see the gap approaching, start to move forward to meet the gap. If you are preparing for a road test, I would encourage you to take a practice driving test if you're not already taking driving lessons. That way you'll know whether to use my technique, or move into the intersection which is the other school of thinking. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. Hello, I'll be doing a G road test in Ontario soon. You said for the purpose of a road test that after making a left turn you should go into the right lane. Is this correct? Even if the instructor doesn't tell you to go into the right lane?

      @smartdrivetest  5 лет назад +2

      Hi The Grabbin' Dragon - Thank you for your comment and query. Great video. But let's say you are at an intersection about turning left with your front wheels outside the crosswalk waiting for a safe gap to make your turn while the light is green. Just when you have enough gap to make your turn you noticed a pedestrian crossing on the road you are about turning to, you waited for the pedestrian to finish crossing but light has now turned red. So what do you do in this situation, remember your front wheels are already outside the crosswalk?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 лет назад

      Hi Abimbola Orebe - Apologies for the late response. Thank you for your comment and query. If your light is about to go yellow, it is very unlikely that there is going to be a pedestrian on the cross street. Also, when your light goes to yellow, you MUSt clear the intersection. More and more people cross against the light..when they should be waiting. Big cities are the worse.
      So I suggest that you but and install a trucks air horn. That make them those pedestrian law breakers run. If they're not slipping on their own poo.

    I've been researching about left hand turns because in Indiana people tend to turn to the far right lane of the street they intend to turn into, instead of turning to the left lane. Apparently it's not an illegal thing to do because of a judge's interpretation of the law. Thoughts?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Mikei97 - thanks for your comment. Actually, if you look at the legislation, you may find it is against the law. Look for turning in the Highways Traffic Act there in Indiana and I'm sure you'll find something about turning right - right lane to right lane; and left, left lane to left lane OR turn into the closest lane. As well, it is dangerous because you're turning and merging at the same time. And finally, it's an unpredictable action. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

      Yes..it's not idea.but if you need to get into a place like a gas station...that they often place on intersection cross road corners. You can do the legal thing. By legally turning g into the left lane from the left lane. And slowly, with great care. Indicate and then move into the the right lane to turn into the gas station or other entrance. You won't be asked to turn off of the roadway like that on a driving test..but you can do it legally.

I often run into this and a lot of times the other car will stop and not move at all and I'm not sure what to do. So, the point of doing the zig-zag in the intersection is to get out of the way of the cars behind you ...so that as you're turning you they won't bump you into on-coming traffic on both your left and right?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  3 года назад

      Hi Jewel Thompson - Thank you for your question. The purpose of the jig-jog is to see past the large vehicle on the opposite side of the intersection. You move to the left, but so far that you're not in the way of oncoming traffic. And you bring your wheels back to straight so that in the unlikely event of being rear-ended, you don't get pushed into oncoming traffic. All the best, Cheers Rick

  • @Snappers1_

    If you live in Connecticut, do NOT slide the steering wheel back. You have to put it back by doing hand-over-hand to the right.

      Hi FlipnotePikachu - Thank you for your comment. Thank you for that information - where are you in CT? I have found that the manipulating the steering wheel back tends to be localized with different driving instructors and examiners. I would be interested to hear your story. Thank you. All the best, Cheers Rick

    I took my road test twice so far and failed both times. During the second attempt, the instructor told me it was because I stalled at the intersection and was too slow/disrupted flow of traffic. Please help?!? I just wanna make sure I'm prepared enough and able to pass the 3rd try. My 3rd attempt is in 2 weeks.

      1) Where in the world are you taking your driving test?
      2) Are you driving a manual car for your test?

    I have a question, let’s say im making a left turn in a 4 lane intersection, if a pedestrian is walking towards me on the cross walk , meaning the opposite way I am facing, when is it safe for me to make the turn? When he reaches the middle of the street or until he is completely on the other side? Also is it legal for me to make a left and turn onto the far right lane if safe?

    What's the point of shoulder checking on left turns? The traffic is in the opposite side anyways?

    When you are in the left lane and your instructor tells you to turn left at an intersection, do you have to stay in the left lane when you make the turn and wait for them tell you to change to the right lane or do you do it without them telling you?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 лет назад

      Hi Michi111996 - Thank you for your comment and query. Unless the examiner tells you to stay in the left lane because you are going to turn left at the next intersection, ensure that you get back over to the right lane as quickly as possible. Examiners--for the most part--are really good at giving you lots of notice. Most of the time you'll move back to the right lane after turning left. But if they want you to turn left, they'll tell you to stay in the left lane. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

      would I be marked if I stay in the right lane instead when turning in the intersection? I just want to make sure if it is allowed to go in either one. thanks for the reply :)

      When you are in the left lane and your instructor tells you to turn left at an intersection into a two-lane road, is it okay if I stay in the right lane? does it matter whether you go into the right or left lane?

    • @appletree8441

      You must be joking..yes?
      If you don't know this basic..you should keep taking lessons until you do.
      Or just keep taking the bus
      It's almost too easy to get a license..but after a person does..far too many are still morons on the roads.
      Have a nice day.^_^

    Well, what if, besides all these valuable advice, you find yourself stuck in the middle of the intersection unable to turn left because of oncoming traffic, and your light turns red? Are the other drivers that now have a green light supposed to let you make the turn? Thank you

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  4 года назад

      Hi Kostas Vlamos - Thank you for your question. Have a look at this video my friend: ruclips.net/video/QQskdDGE6LY/видео.html If you're in the intersection and the light goes red, you. OWN the intersection, and you must clear it. Check, double check, and triple check that the oncoming traffic is coming to a stop and then proceed to clear the intersection. And watch the pickup truck at 15:30. The driver clears the intersection on a "VERY" red light. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    So when I’m coming to an intersection wanting to take a left I go in the middle of the intersection when the light is green, and I’m waiting until I can safely take the turn, what if it is not safe and to many cars are coming and the light turns yellow, do I take the left because I am in the middle of the intersection? what do I do

    Could you be so kind to provide some theory and video for turning left at the intersection with median, basis green light or flashing green light? I just got failed in my road test in BC due to my bad left turns at median, but it seems there are different argument on google where exactly you should wait and check traffic at median...
