For new drivers, turning pose the biggest challenge when learning to drive. Turning combines the 4 fundamental components of any road test:
1) space management:
2) speed management;
3) observation;
4) communication.
When turning, the driver must know the rules for right-of-way. He or she must demonstrate due care and control of the vehicle at all times. And to showcase this ability, the driver must be competent with the primary controls of the vehicle.
The most common challenge is speed control. It is important to slow to the appropriate speed before commencing the turn. In other words, brake first and then steer through the corner. If you look in your path of travel, the vehicle will go where you are looking.
When turning right, the vehicle's speed should be no more than 10-15kph (8-10mph) and when turning left the vehicle's speed should be 15-25kph (12-18mph). Getting the vehicle to the correct speed first is one of the key components of turning successfully. As well, the slower you travel with any vehicle, the sharper it's going to turn.
Every turn or lateral movement in vehicle requires 2 shoulder (head) checks minimum. One head (shoulder) check approximately 1/2 block from the turn, and another immediately preceding the turn.
Good luck on your road test.

The most intimidating thing about turns for me is that in slowly down someone could get impatient and rear end me. People can't drive here, and that makes me so nervous.

Great video! Love the double screen showing both you turning the wheel and the road view. I don't get much driving time and when I do, no one who takes me out explains anything about the actual driving process. I didn't know that making a right turn is actually a very short action of turning the car right and turning the wheel back straight before you're fully in the lane you were trying to turn into. I was always holding the wheel to the right, far too long. Now, hopefully I can get some real practice applying the new knowledge.

I am taking driving lessons while I am in the Middle East. I initially trained for 9 days for the first test which are theory, drum test and slope tests which I passed 2 days ago with a bit of driving from home to the practise location. Today I started training for practical driving on a very busy highway, and I wanted to quit after the 1 hour lesson. I am not sure why the heck I was driving on a very busy highway during rush hour 6:30 to 7:30 in the morning when the driving instructor knows I am still struggling with keeping the car in the center of my lane, I still lack steering control - over steering and understeering, and I am scared to drive 40 kph when turning left and right and u-turn and entering and exiting roundabouts. I just cried after going home and I just wanted to quit
Thank you so much, your videos gave me more knowledge and I passed the test

Im taking my second test soon im praying to pass, I have trouble turning mostly because I don’t know when to start slowing down to make the turn. I was told by the instructor that I was stopping too much to make the turn!
Your videos helped. Thank u so much.
Nice video. I found it while looking for something else. I drive 40ft and 63ft buses for a living. A vehicle like these, requires of me to do not more than 3 to 5mph to maintain stability and control on left and right turns. So it is good to start off slow when learning how to do turns
Hi Douglas McGehee - Thank you for your comment and information. Yes, for a larger vehicle you're going to need to keep you speed slower than for a passenger vehicle. Your centre of gravity is going to be higher; therefore better to get going slower. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Unfortunately I didn't pass my road test today :( honestly I was very nervous and I guess my nerves got the best of me. I was checking my blind spots and mirrors constantly. I had to make a right turn but my instructor said I rolled out too much to check for traffic and failed me :( super bummed. Hope I get it on the next try 🤞🏽

Allisa Khan hello Allisa make an imaginary line from the top of your hood of the truck right to the white line on the street in front of you talk about it with your instructor because that may put you right at the right spot you need to be that way you know where to stop and you're not too far out...

When and how should I turn right in a busy road, where the traffic is quite fast? Highway 42. Garner.Nc. Business area. Traffic light controlled intersections.
I was driving on this road, passed the intersection then ( turning right) to the fast food parking place from the busy road. I signaled early , change to the right lane, braked, check blind spots and turned right. But my " driving instructor" :) family member told me I slowed down too much and I should not slow down that much as I can be hit by a car behind me. Any way that make sense but what should I do in this case ? Should I not slow down 10 mph ? Can I turn faster? I thought that was quite a sharp turn. Thank you

Hi Jagruti Patel - you are most welcome my friend. Drop us a note if we can help further my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
This vdo is very helpful!!!! I never checked the speed while turning and sometimes I felt that I was going too fast! Now I know what to do better.
Question: When can we safely slow down before turning? For example, I am on the highway with 55mph and I will have to make a right turn very soon. I was told to just let go of the gas pedal first, but no breaking til I get very close to the corner. Sometimes I end up turning with an improper speed. Scary! Yikes! I am really not quite sure about this. Thanks.
Hi June June - If there is a deceleration lane, you don't want to slow until you get completely into the deceleration lane. If there isn't a deceleration lane, you do want to let off the throttle prior to the turn. And you probably want to start using the brakes approximately 1/2 city block before the turn. Again, that manoeuvre is one of those practice, practice with the vehicle because different corners are going to need different responses, and the geography is going to have an impact on your speed too. Thanks, Cheers Rick
Great work once again :)
When is the right time to shoulder check?
Do we check just once immediately before turning or do we check twice once few meters before we turn and the second time immediately before we turn?
Hi Ben - thanks for your comment and praise. For every turn, you are required to shoulder check 2 times. Once approximately 1/2 block from the turn and again immediately before the turn - see ruclips.net/video/uJ4w63wZyFQ/видео.html. Did you find the 3 point turn video? Thanks Cheers Rick
Thanks

Hi, nice video. I have a question. When making a right turn, as usual, we need to turn into the most right lane which is the closest to the curb. What if this lane is a parking lane? Should I still turn into the parking lane and then signal left to change to the driving lane? Thanks.
Hi Kim Huang - Thank you for your comment. Turn into the lane closest to the curb and then merge over. This video may help: ruclips.net/video/yVtJSertVvw/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Rick. I’m a bit unsure as to the exact sequence of mirror checks when you turn. So after you signal, do you look at the rear view mirror first, then side mirror, then shoulder check. Then just when you are about to turn, you do just a shoulder check? Is that correct?
Hi Taniuska Lopez - Thank you for your query. Have a look at this video my friend: ruclips.net/video/ynynZGrOLFA/видео.html And for shoulder checking, this video: ruclips.net/video/uJ4w63wZyFQ/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. 3 things for me, wide turns, shoulder checks and speed control
so when you are in the left lane and your intructor tells you to turning left into a two-way street, do you stay in the left lane then change into the right lane without the instructor telling you that?
Hey, I'm really new to driving and have been watching a lot of your videos.
I was just wondering, for when I'm turning am I applying the gas while making a turn or am I letting the momentum of the car take me around the corner?
What exactly should my feet be doing is pretty much what I'm wondering.
Hi Jason - bring the vehicle to the correct speed before turning. Right - 10-15kph (8-12mph) and left - 15 - 20 kph (10-15mph). For the first half of the turn you will be manipulating the steering wheel and observing, and at the half way point of the turn you will be accelerating, and looking up into the path of travel. And I would suggest that before you work on turns to start here: ruclips.net/video/dJpMKkwEhxI/видео.html If you have further questions drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

I go too wide turning left or right and that is my issue
Hi David M. - Thank you for your comment. Two immediate changes could help fix your wide turns - slow down to 8-10mph (10-12kph) for right turns; and 15-25mph (15-30kph) for left turns. The slower you go in any vehicle, the sharper it turns. As well, look in the direction you want the vehicle to go. And for better turns, perhaps go back to the fundaments and work with the primary controls in a parking lot for a couple of hours. See these videos for exercises and tips: ruclips.net/video/dJpMKkwEhxI/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/w3Dc8k1jOq8/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Hey Ricky, I'm taking my road test in vancouver and how fast should I drive in residential areas? My instructors have told me to go as close to 50km/h as possible but with cars parked on both sides and the chance of Jay walkers, what should I do during my roas test?
When turning left or right do you brake first when you coming to the turns then turn your wheel the way you turning and the push on the gas again ?
Thank you this helped my daughter!!
Hi @_JerryLopez_ - you are most welcome my friend. Drop us a note if we can help further my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest Thank you, I sure will. In fact, this was for my 1st daughter, I have 2 more girls and then my son...they're all within 1-3 yrs away from driving. I shared your video with all of them. Thank you!
One more question Rick. What about the procedure for doing turns at a traffic light? Are they the same?
Hi Taniuska Lopez - Thank you for your query. The fundamentals are the same. These videos will help further: ruclips.net/video/QQskdDGE6LY/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/kKCNrHYsoOU/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Love from Uganda east Africa 🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬🇺🇬
Can you also do the push pull method please?
Can I do push &pull method while turning? Thanks
thanks a lot! questions: when I make my turns either left or right, my left foot keeps on pressing the clutch on my first gear, I cant move it up or balance it with my right foot stepping to the gas. Either the engine stops or the car accelerate so fast. :(
Hi Eli Arrieta - thank you for your comment and query. I might suggest that you go back to the parking lot or other quiet area and revisit some of the basics - that might help with your problem. Have a look at this video: ruclips.net/video/dJpMKkwEhxI/видео.html As well, have a look at the manual transmission videos - these might help too: ruclips.net/p/PL0x-bChcUvwE4covDy04Sre8cPPb-q4HL If there's anything further we can do, drop us a note. Hi Rick! Why is there shoulder check needed if you are at the very right side of the road? I followed this advice and did a shoulder check when I was with an instructor and was told that at the test they can take points off if I do unnecessary checks. I am in US. Thanks!
This video may answer your question: ruclips.net/video/uJ4w63wZyFQ/видео.html All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi sir, do you have to check both side mirrors for the Mirror, Signal, Shoulder Check if you are turning left, so do you have to check your right side mirror or just left side mirrors?
Just in the direction your are going to turn. Have a look at this vid: ruclips.net/video/TrtgVbd87SY/видео.html Drop us a note if we can help further. Cheers Rick
I’m trying really hard to get my licence I just had a question about the proper procedure when turning, in the video I see you shoulder check then check your mirror when your coming up to the stop sign but then right as your going you shoulder check again, my dad insists this is wrong and that I should shoulder check only once I’m doing the turn not while I’m coming up to it. Please explain. The instructor doing the test wants to see you shoulder check when your coming up to every turn or is that only right hand turns? And does he want to see you shoulder check twice?
Hi Daniel Hanson - Shoulder check 2X for every turn and lane change. One as you're coming up and another immediately before the manoeuvre. Have a look at this video - ruclips.net/video/uJ4w63wZyFQ/видео.html Tell your Dad--with all due respect--that there's a difference between social driving and preparing for a driver's test. And you are most welcome. Have a look at this video for lane changes: ruclips.net/video/xLQ8lkwvR5E/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. Hi Butterfly Rose - thank you for your comment. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
I'm not sure if you did a video on this and not sure what rules are established in your country, but could do one on turning on a stop light or intersection and what lane to stay on. If the instructor says turn left here it's obvious but what lane should one stay in left, middle, or right?. Some instructors will ask those questions and that's confusing but obvious as to which lane you should stay in.
You want these videos for right turns: ruclips.net/video/kKCNrHYsoOU/видео.html And you want these for left turns: ruclips.net/video/QQskdDGE6LY/видео.html Drop us a note if we can help further. All the best, Cheers Rick
When you go for a turn. How can you turn the wheel? Can you do push and pull. Or do you have to do hand over hand. That's the thing I'm most nervous. I'm not good at turning with two hands but I have a one hand on the top of the wheel for the support and use the other hand to turn. Would that be acceptable or would I have to learn to do hand over hand or push and pull.
Hi Ryan winters - Thank you for your comment. Most testing authorities want you to do hand over hand. See this video: ruclips.net/video/L4DkGGJKzlE/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Check your meddle mirror, side mirror ,

Hi Kavi DL - Thank you for your comment. And that is an awesome summary of the steps for executing a turn. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
I would like to know when ( the correct distance)should I slow down to turn right if I am driving on a 70 km maximum speed road. I have to do that every day to go to work but it seems to me I am slowing down to soon to turn the right as there are cars coming behind me and I am scared to get into an accident.
Hi L SSPapp - thank you for your comment & flattering compliment. On most turns you are going to start slowing approximately 2 to 1/2 block(s) from the turn, but changing road, traffic, and weather conditions are going to impact that distance. Have a look at this video for protecting yourself against being rear-ended: ruclips.net/video/LzgcJbBmAfc/видео.html And look at this video for right turns: ruclips.net/video/kKCNrHYsoOU/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. There is more to make turns than just controlling the speed. When do I start turning the wheel and how much?. I know it is different on right turns than on left turns. For those used to driving, it is easy to forget that first time drivers do not have a clue about that.
You want this video my friend: ruclips.net/video/2fEJL0NHqsA/видео.html Nobody can tell you when to start turning the steering wheel and how much because EVERY corner is going to be different. BASIC rule is to start turning when your body is in line with the cross-street. Learning when to turn the steering wheel and how much MUST be learned in a parking lot before going out on the road. Before heading out on the road and working on turns, you must have mastery of the primary controls (the gas, brake, and steering wheel). Drop us a note if we can help further. Cheers Rick
I want to thank you because I learned a lot from your videos. I finally passed my actual driving test yesterday:). Do i have to wait for my drivers license card before i drive by myself or I can already use the paper thing that they gave me ? thanks a lot!!!!

Do you know what’s the correct way to hold the steering wheel when turning in California? I’ve heard people say hand over hand but also some people say you need to use the push and pull method. Just don’t wanna fail my test from something so small
Our understanding is that it's hand-over-hand. A local driving instructor would have the definitive answer for you my friend. Drop us a note if we can help further. See this vid too: ruclips.net/video/L4DkGGJKzlE/видео.html All the best, Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test Thanks I appreciate your help
How do you use your camera 2 screens ....not able to get
It's difficult for a new driver if he doesn't have a car to practice. Driving schools charge money. That time is utilized properly. After that it's not easy to procure a car and practice. I have a GDL class 7 in Alberta and can't drive without supervision. I can't have my own car also as I need to get insurance first. More practice means shedding more money :) Thanks.
You are a good instructor and I am trying to follow your videos. But the practical thing is always different then the class or virtual thing.
I’ve just failed my test earlier, actually I failed twice. Hope I can contact or talk to you so I can ask for help and guides. I only have one try, I’m very scared.
Hi Kiel Marquez - Thank you for your comment. What can we help you with my friend? All the best, Cheers Rick
