    Hey Matthias! thank you so much for the video! I just got into notion a few weeks ago and I'm loving the content. My favorite tip is the one on relations and self referential filters, kind of simple things when thinking about data management but really reminded me how much I love data connections 😍😍 . I did have one question, early on in the functionality section you talk about putting everything in databases (love it), and then talk about putting all pages in a pages database as well, I was a little bit confused as to whether you meant that all pages (including those that could be created in other databases) should also be in the pages database? thanks for any help, and I hope you're having a great start to your week 😊😊

      Thank you so much, really appreciate it! And no, if you have a specific place where a page should live, add it there. It’s more about properly storing places in this fallback place if they have no other location to go to. They should never just sit in the sidebar - that’s the most important part ;)

    • @mfreihaendig
      @mfreihaendig  5 месяцев назад +2

      There isn’t a built-in way, but you could use two workarounds:
      1) use formulas to manipulate the order using the sort() command
      2) create a linked view with a self-referential filter as shown in tip #49 and then sort that database accordingly
      If you want to use formulas, here’s some help:

    I have a question. I'm in the middle of the functional section. Do you mean that every notion page should be in one mega backend database? or that there should be a backend page where the originals of the various databases should reside? This is all very good. I don't do much of anything with tasks exactly, but can see how, when I was working on my masters the various task manipulations would have been useful. I realize its old-fashioned but I use Google calendar and color-coding for to-dos and assignments. So I'm wrapping my head around how you're using databases and seeing if it applies or could apply to my current project. I've heard others talk about using linked databases on working pages, and keeping the originals safe elsewhere, and I have done that. Buttons are still top of my list for learning to use something new and trying to figure out how to integrate them in a sidebar in a synced block so they can appear on every page of the project. The working from one item to the next and comparing of items has always been the most tedious aspect of my work. Thank you so much for doing this.

    • @mfreihaendig
      @mfreihaendig  4 месяца назад

      I‘m so happy to hear you like it!
      And regarding your question: sort of.
      I think a workspace should have a very limited amount of top level pages and those should mainly be to organise the content in your workspace
      So instead of just creating new top level pages for notes, having a catch-all database to store them would be great.
      Databases should also all be stored in one place for easy access (at least your core ones). They can’t go into another database directly, but you can create a backend page for them ☺️

    Hi. Please help!
    I've been doing the setup that I learned from you, in this video or another, I'm not sure anymore. Anyway, I made a Backend where I created areas, projects, tasks, and a few other things. I connected all the databases. However, when I go into a project and add tasks directly there, I can't get them to assign the area and project automatically to the list. They do sync with the Tasks database in my Backend, but they have no further categorization, no area or project, so I have to do that manually each time.
    Also, some of the tasks I created have just disappeared or gone into the wrong project, and I have no idea why or how that happened.
    I'm freaking out that some important stuff will end up getting lost like this.

      Hey there ☺️
      That’s likely because you‘re setting the wrong filters - make sure to check that you apply a proper self-referential filter 💪🏻

    • @Lenastar23
      @Lenastar23 4 месяца назад

      @@mfreihaendig it could be too many? but it definitely returns a random finite selection. I generally work out of the desktop app. I can sometimes fix it by going directly to that page so that it is 'current' and then come back to what I'm working on. But recently, it doesn't seem to work very often.....
      Let's say I'm trying to @ my January 2024 page- it will bring up JAN 2 but not find January 2024 at all even when spelling it out in it's entirety

    • @mfreihaendig

      You need to create a database first - you can do so by just typing /database inside the page and then name it accordingly 💪🏻

    @Matthias Frank Still don't fully understand the masterdatabase:
    Backend > Masterdatabase > all pages in Masterdatabase including other masterdatabases
    or
    Backend > Masterdatabase > all pages in Masterdatabase inlcuding other masterdatabases
    AND Backend > masterdatabases as pages?

    • @mfreihaendig

      I‘d create a single backend page and store all your master databases in it. One of those then stores all other pages 💪🏻

    This video very neatly showcase why I dislike Notion - everything is a workaround and a hack, so the system you end up with isn’t ever really good at anything and you’re never finished tweaking it. I get the appeal though for DIY people who aren’t developers and can’t program their own tool.
