    Doctor Who is one of the best shows ever made in my option because everyone loves different things about it. Like I disagree with a lot of what you’re saying but I know a lot of people who will think different things then both of us. Doctor Who is so fun because everyone gets something different out of it. It’s how RTD liked to stretch out of the plot (because we’re at the point where the Doctor himself is a huge plot mover and needs to get trapped to slow things down). Honestly, I only liked the last of the time lords. The family of blood dragged on too long and that whole John Smith thing got silly and frustrating. 1) Why is this random “nice” kid stealing stuff? I mean I’m just saying but if the entire plot could be avoided by one random little kid not stealing the plot device and hiding for 2 episodes then there’s a problem. 2) I didn’t really get the whole relationship thing. Like they over dramatized that way too much. John Smith had been there like a month and got to know that blonde chick for like a day. “Maybe” there was a budding romance there, but neither had spent enough time with each other to be risking the entire planet over it. Then it just made me mad beyond end when she got mad at 10 for not torturing himself by turning back into this guy she had just met and “maybe” would spend the rest of her life with. 3) I hate John Smith. He was far too against becoming the Doctor again when that whole persona existed like a month and the world was in danger. Utopia just takes that whole concept and does it so much better. Professor Yana is allured to the watch after it was pointed out to him (makes sense. It represents unimaginable power and opportunity) and he opens it and has that twist very quickly. Maybe the family of blood would have been better if that little kid opened the watch and “became” the Doctor, after which he and Martha would have to work to turn him back human and make John Smith the Doctor again.

    Chibnal's era is perfect for pure historicals, as Demons of the Punjab showed. If he wants to make a mark on the show, go for more pure histoicals.

      It’s not about allowing, she hasn’t put any of her own spin on the character...as she put it in an interview, her “spin” on the Doctor is “written on the page...” Shes not even TRYING. Just phoning it in.

    • @vullord666
      @vullord666 3 года назад

      The problem with pure historicals is they don’t really offer anything for the audience and as such the show anymore. In the earliest days of Who (1960s), pure historicals were amazing because it did something unheard of. It let audiences experience history firsthand through the show and learn about things they might not have. The problem is back then history was only taught in the textbooks (if that) and just showing it added a lot to the conversation. Now, we have so much exposure to history that it needs to go beyond that. We have video games that put in right in the shoes of characters (and are really accurate and informational on top of being fun) and literal search engines on the phones that we carry around in our pockets we can use to look up any history at any time. Not to mention all the RUclips videos that make it fun (because history is hilarious) and all the other media with it (historical fiction is also much more common of a genre because its easier to research). Modern who has done this so far by instead focusing on historical figures or space invasions with the historical setting being in the background. Even when they focus on historical figures its not just a history lesson, but putting this figures in difficult and challenging situations that show us their character in ways we’d never seen (like Charles Dickens having to deal with alien ghosts). Chibnall’s historical are written like the show is still airing in the 20th century. They don’t add anything new to the conversation or interest me at all. The Demons of the Punjab was about the best of the bunch, and I still don’t really understand the “point” as a viewer with how it ended (also those demons are just knock off testimony), and during it the historical characters weren’t really “challenged” we were basically just watching history unfold as it did. Which is nice, but I mean... I can just look that stuff up. I kinda need more from my favorite show. The Rosa Parks episode was just nothing. I live in the U.S. and have gone through public education in the south. I’ve had to read Rosa Parks biography, watch endless videos/documentaries, and learn about the era in class. I’m black and I have to say I don’t care THAT much about something that happened before I was born. Racism was bad. We get it. Teach us the history and we’ll learn from it. Keep repeating the same thing over and over again and I’ll drown you out, and that’s all the episode did. It just restated basic information and added nothing to the conversation. Even the time traveling racist was JUST a racist (and there’s a LOT that can be discussed about race that no one ever does (like that human’s don’t have races biological and it’s just a social construct we can’t let go of, or that racism is just a result of a larger issue of people forming groups and seeing people outside their group as the enemy, or that we still haven’t taken the necessary steps to completely defeat racism, or that people are focusing too much on the government to solve it when it’s a social issue, or just anything... literally anything besides “racism is bad”). Arguably the pure historicals would work better if Doctor Who was a purely kids show. It’d be great for learning, but it’s a family show and has a MUCH larger audience to appeal to. Then there’s the issue that while writing these historicals Chibnall is still failing to develop any of the main cast or create any sort of coherent plot.
      Is Jo Martin the actor for Ruth? Because I absolutely hate what the Ruth Doctor is (timeless child nonsense), but completely agree that her portrayal had a lot more presence than 13. Whitaker honestly doesn’t seem suited for the role (not that she’s a bad actor, but her style and personality doesn’t fit). Martin (if she was Ruth) definitely felt like she’d make a great Doctor, and now I’m just made that was denied her own actual incarnation or run and was slotted to be this stupid timeless child nonsense. For that same reason the New Master (Sacha) feels like he’d work better as a new villain entirely (the entire character is a regression from Missy’s arc and the master was never that suicidal). Then again, I’d like for Gallifrey not to have destroyed twice in one series (or at all after it was brought back) so clearly Chibnall doesn’t care what the fans want.

    Mind you they put a lot of effort into the design, and you honestly wish we got more stories like this instead of roughly 75 % of the modern series taking place in contemporary Britain and us having to get told about the amazing off world adventures the Doctor got into that we *just* missed and which happened totally offscreen. And when we get an off world story, it's usually just set on a spaceship, prefferabely somewhere close to Earth anyway, the amount of actual *alien worlds* we boith visit *and* get to see (none of that Girl who Waited crap where we never see any of it, nor any of the inhabitants CUZ REASONS) is shockingly low.
    The Classic series had half the budget of a daily soap on a slightly unpopular TV network and yet they managed to split episodes between Earth and foreign planets based stories almost for the entire run, until the last season, which was hobled by Michael Grade's stupid budget cuts.

      Yeah, I felt the same way about Rings; there was loads more world-building and understanding the personal stakes that it would have been great to see explored (which would have allowed me to more easily overlook the fact the Doc just basically destroys a millions-of-years-old civilisation and noone bats an eye, ot that he and Clara could both apparently ride a space bike in outer space with neither needing a helmet.
      I bloody loved the singing, though.

  • @tTaseric
    @tTaseric 4 года назад +39

    I just realised that Night Terrors is the exact story that Fear Her wanted to be. It's a perfect example of a scared alien lashing out, and they didn't include anything ridiculous like the entire world being erased, or the Olympics. Night Terrors kept it intimate and personal, on a quite literal smaller scale. The dolls are still the only Doctor Who monster that i can confidently say i'm creeped out by.
    I have to say, i completely disagree with your ranking of the monk trilogy from Season 10. Pyramid at the End of the World's only negatives are the episodes that surround it. I'd personally give it a 8 or 9. I don't understand why you rate Pyramid at the End of the World so low because of Lie of the Land, but Heaven Sent gets a 9 despite Hell Bent's existence. It's utter perfection.
    The Doctor's 'defeat' of the monks feels totally earned, but then Bill saving the Doctor and dooming the world just set up the PERFECT episode to follow it up. Lie of the Land drags it down but Pyramid is still a great episode.
    Unlike the Master or the Daleks, the Monks are intimidating and threatening even when they're 'defeated' at the end of Pyramid. I still feel genuinely scared for Bill when the monks start to ask her for consent. The human leader's downfall all seem totally earned too, of course they wouldn't trust the Doctor with their planet like that after being shown the end of the world. The monk's plan made perfect sense, all the character motivations were great and the side characters were all genuinely compelling. I would've loved to see another episode with Erica. I personally couldn't see how they could stretch his blindness to another episode, but i see where you're coming from. I see why you don't like Pyramid, but giving it a 4 just seems bonkers.
    Also your point about the Master being ripped off.... yeah. I kinda see where you're coming from, but again i disagree. Sacha's master is what Simm's master tried to be. It added the extra bit of spice that made him a full character, unlike Simm's obnoxious and two-dimensional character. I personally think Sacha's master seemed so "over-the-top" was because no one else really tried. No one else has really portrayed that emotion in Season 11 or 10. I think Sacha would've been the perfect Master for 9 or 11. It was the amount of fun that Sacha was having that really saved his master for me. His actual character design is probably my favourite out of any Master.
    I think they should've brought back the Confession Dial. Let The Doctor dump the fam back on Earth because she's so scared of losing them to the Cybermen (Seriously... Why would she even let them in the same UNIVERSE as the Cybermen after what happened to Bill?) and have the Master dump the Doctor in her confession dial. The Doctor left the dial on Gallifrey in Hell Bent so this would've been perfect. Let the Master and the Doctor chat for 60 minutes inside the Dial. You get the same results, but your protagonist isn't literally trapped for the entire episode. The Timeless Children seems like if a fan watched the first 20 minutes of Hell Bent and thought "I could do better" and made something that's worthy of being called a fan-fiction.
    It's been SOOO long since we've seen an episode with only the Doctor and the Master. Martha and Wilf stole the show from Simm, Danny and Bill stole the show from Gomez. An episode where it's simply the Doctor and the Master in the confession dial, maybe exploring his own confession dial, would've been perfect. There's no need to ever touch the Cybermen again after the perfection that was the Season 10 finale. You simply cannot top that. It baffles me how Season 10 made the Cybermen the greatest antagonists ever put to screen, then just two seasons later they were made into a generic Sci-Fi robot army.
    The Timeless Children was okay for me. I liked the twist, because i've never cared much for the supposed Canon. I like the potential this brings for the future of the show. I think these Cybermen are the best designs aside from the Mondasian Cybermen from Season 10. I think the amount of energy and passion Sacha put into his performance was very fun to watch. 13 and Ruth worked well together, but she should've been more present.
    Season 12 is literally the season of "Wow are they gonna do this! This is such a cool concept! Could they perhaps... oh no it's over" The best example of this is Can you Hear me. There was an absolute PERFECT villain there! Yeah the fingers in the ears was a tiny bit cheesy but in a fun Doctor Who-esque way. Two immortals simply playing with the peoples of a planet because they're bord was a perfect metaphor for The Doctor and the Master. I was waiting the entire episode for a line like "You're no stranger to this Doctor..." or some sort of acknowledgement that yes the Doctor is also immortal and could potentially relate here. Let 13 have a new exciting take on Immortality that no other Doctor has ever had before.
    As a whole, I think Jodie's era is best summed up with "Oh... That's it? It's over already?" Every episode left me wanting more, but not in a good way.

      Pyramid at the End of the World is a fantastically acted, fantastically realised mess of a story that breaks logic in order for its plot to work. I mean literally every single plot beat relies on impossibilities. A lab that vents toxins into the atmosphere as a cleaning method? A scientist who goes to work hungover? A scientist who leaves open every single security feature of the lab? A scientist who takes his mask off in a toxic environment? A door to a lab with a complicated combination lock? This is all meant to isolate him and take everything away from him until he's finally had enough in waters of Mars where he realises that life is unfair and he has the power to change that fact. The 10th doctor is one of the most tragic because he's constantly shown his dream life with John Smith, human Doctor, river who who is meant to be his wife but dies, his daughter who dies and everyone moving on. And even after saving the world without sacrificeing his morals he's not even allowed to "live". RTD comes out of the gate running with series 1, stumbles somewhat with series 2, returns to form in 3 and knocks it out of the park with 4 and the specials. Series 5 is my favourite Eleven series but for me it gets progressively worse until we reach Capaldi where each series builds on the greatness of the last. Then Chibnall takes over and I could not be bothered to continue past Rosa with series 11. Even so, I still prefer the 3 episodes I saw from series 11 over 12 because at least it was trying to be different and not rehashing old story beats from a decade ago as well as fiddling around with lore (that's not even necessarily referring to the Timeless Child because I've been disliking what seems like his utter dismissal of Moffat's era).

    After hearing the harsh snarky nitpicking I've heard another reviewer treat season 11 and 12, seeing you give some of the Whitaker stuff an 8 or a 9 (even if you find the other 2/3 is still underwhelming) is a breath of fresh air. I really am open-minded with the Timeless Child twist (it gives us some more mystery about the Doctor's past) though I can see why not everyone likes it.
    From what I've gathered, I think one of the main issues with Chibnall is that his stories seem better suited for a much longer episode (say, 90 minutes) than the 50 minutes he's given. That would explain why a lot of his episodes have rushed endings and little time for character work. Either he's not adjusting to the episodic limits, or he really needs more time. Granted, even his two-parters have issues, but its an observation.

      If Chibnalls era had been standalone then I might agree with you but compared to other series it's just dreadful. I mean compare Human Nature to what you consider to be Whittaker's best and it's laughable.

    I'd actually give TWWFTE an 8. Not the strongest 8 but an 8 nonetheless. To me it's genuinely the most fresh DW has been since The 11th Hour! It has a cool villain with an even better atmosphere (man Tim Shaw's theme makes my ears get an...orgasm), 13 feels like the incarnation we were supposed to get after 12, and if you ask me it's one of the best Whittaker stories. Also companions are fun and so full of potential here that in general I think that this episode came out from a different writer all together

    Also Beast Below is just a mess mate. The plot makes no sense and the story forgets the goverment are the same people who was willing to murder children for minor school grievances and created the murder robots the gang runs away from, yet which are kinda treated as if they were not a thing the local goverment controls.
    Also, why was the UK the only country not to have a spaceship ? Never explained.
    Why did they need to keep wiping "Liz X's" memory and how does she not realise nobody she knows is even alive anymore.
    The story says that 1 % of the population can also decide to murder the other 99 % if just one percent agrees to Protest....why ?
    Also let's point out that hitting "Protest" drops people into the stomach of a whale. And even if the whale "doesn't eat children", considering the booth is only to be used by adults _and_ we never hear anything about adults....yeah, the whale might have eaten thousands of people.
    It's a confused hodgepodge with two obvious versions of the script that were smooshed together and no one made sure that stuff from Part 1 makes sense in Part 2.

    This was an enjoyable watch. I don’t agree with every review, but who would? I’m sure you weren’t expecting anyone to. This was a nice look back at all of new who. Notably, I do agree with your opinion on the series 12 finale and timeless children. At the end of the day the timeless child being the doctor is just an idea (I mean it is a fairly terrible one that almost certainly won’t work, but still just an idea). Whether they make it interesting or not or do anything with it that engages me/the audience we just don’t know yet. They don’t have to touch it at all; it’s something they CAN work with down the line. The problem with the finale is that the entire episode focused on telling the Doctor they are the timeless child. A series finale where half the cast is pretty worthless, that’s 2/3 exposition (and the Doctor being talked to at that), and with the Doctor doing pretty much nothing/doing what she’s told/letting someone else destroy her planet for her (and a character we JUST met at that) is just bad; objectively bad. The finale just showcases the root problem with Chibnall; he doesn’t know Doctor Who or the Doctor’s character and doesn’t bother to try. He just shoves cool sounding things into an episode and hopes we don’t see past the shiny new cyberman design.

    • @christopherbennett5858
      @christopherbennett5858 4 года назад

      Especially when this was the THIRD finale in 6 years which was the Master commanding the Cybermen.
      Chibnall is a weird one. He wrote a lot for Torchwood but could crumble.
      He did some good work in the Moffat Era but that's just it.
      Chibnall isn't a guy you put as a head writer for a sci-fi/fantasy series. He's a guy that needs direction, not one who sets it.
      When I was watching the Tesla episode, I loved the story but made a headcanon that the writer could only get it made by the BBC if it was a Doctor Who story and was forced to use the cast.

I just sometimes couldn't see if the rating was a 0 or an 8... They looked very similar, maybe use a slightly different font next time? it wasn't impossible to decipher but just unnecessarily harder to read. P.S. I wish 13 had character, its been 2 whole seasons and she still has me feeling up in the air. maybe if she was a bit more introverted like in the end of 'Can you hear me'. as it was definitely different to the other doctors. Anyway, peace!
