    The problem that people have with Angels Take Manhattan is sort of explained mainly because Rory's death is a fixed point in time and so if that changes then it could tear reality apart as a paradox mainly because it was all written in the book and they witnessed his death and they could maybe try and change Amy's future because she technically didn't die in New York but Rory did so he wouldn't be able to leave New York and because they'd be back in the 1930s the Angels would still be there.

    Doctor Who was such a special show to me growing up, it was one of the things I watched religiously both as it came out and in the intervening months as I bought all the DVDs - for zoomers, imagine a Netflix show that can’t be deleted from the service in your cupboard - and was happy with every single episode. I preferred S4 immensely but for a while, I could have watched anything from the first six seasons and been very happy for the evening. Even all the way up until S7, I was emphatically in love with it and I didn’t know at the time whether I was just getting too old for it or if the quality was actually declining. (I now realise it was very much the latter, but I digress lol.)
    It still doesn’t even feel real that we might actually be about to return to that Golden Age quality with RTD’s return, I had written the show off as dead and was content to accept what we had but now, now for the first time, I feel genuinely hopeful again. 😅

Why do they hate you soo much? I'm Clara Oswin and I am a human! Run you clever boy and remember. Doctor who? Oh Clara you're brilliant you made them all forget. This is going to be an EXTREMELY spicy take but I have softened on Hell Bent over the years.
    I hated it at first like you do and everyone else did at the time. And I still feel that when you take all of its elements together, I can't justify it being any higher than Middling/Bad. But I've realized that the main thing that brings it down is that it's set on Gallifrey. If this episode had nothing to do with the return of Gallifrey (and cut out the Ashildr stuff) I think it would be far more well received as a continuation of Face the Raven and Heaven Sent. If you go in recognizing that the Hybrid just *does not* matter, and focus your attention on the relationship between the Doctor and Clara and away from all the Gallifrey nonsense, I think it's a really solid conclusion to Clara's character arc and an apt character study on how far the Doctor is willing to go when he feels he's been wronged. The conclusion is a good subversion of what happened to Donna too, where Clara instead takes back her agency and goes out on her own terms as Face the Raven had intended. Series 9, in spite of all it's faults, has a really strong through-line of the Doctor and Clara pushing themselves and each other to extremes, and this episode kinda takes that to it's own logical extreme. That of course gets kinda borked by her flying off with Ashildr in her silly Diner TARDIS which also brings it down a lot but taking out those things lets me at least appreciate what they were going for.
    Again, pretty hot take I know but that's how I feel. That said, I think the rest of this tier list is more or less pretty accurate to how I feel. I can't make any excuses for the Timeless Children. That episode is genuinely a war crime.

    When I saw The Lodger and Closing Time, I had no idea who James Corden was. Having an unbiased viewing I think brings The Lodger up to about middling or good tier. I genuinely enjoyed this episode and it was hilarious to me. I still quote it to this day. Closing Time wasn't as good, I'd probably put it in middling or bad. It had some good bits, but it was mostly kinda boring.

    I feel like Daleks in Manhatten/Evolution of the Daleks could have become more interesting if they actually allowed the human Daleks to survive as a good offshoot of the Daleks. Over time, we could see how Dalek Sec would lead his new race and how they would grow to differentiate themselves from the standard Daleks. The fact that they effectively created a new species, only to kill them all off in the next episode feels like wasted potential. It wouldn't have fixed all the issues, but it would have added some intrigue with how a race of "good" Daleks could evolve as time went on

    Finally some Doctor Who content 🙌
    I'd say I agree with you from a critical viewpoint, but from a personal viewpoint I'd probably change two things: End of Time to being God tier, I can't explain why I just love everything about that two parter, and anything below God tier feels like an injustice to it;
    and the middling Chibnall episodes would be bad/awful. The last era just made me so mad I don't think I could ever say those eps were above bad.
    Loved the video mate! Hope to fucking God we get some Dr who analysis videos next year. I would just love to hear you pick apart episodes and analyse the shit out of them.

It plays off of the pilot when Rose goes to the conspiracy theorist about the doctor like it reinforces that there are people out there that are searching for him that know about him on earth. Yeah the monsters dumb it was designed by a child. I believe RTD made a pretty decent script without having to rely on the doctor or Rose for an episode. Nice to see Hell Bent and the Timeless Children in War Crime where they belong.
    Not to be biased since this is one of my favourite Capaldi episodes, I personally think your a bit too harsh on into the dalek where you say it's trying to be like Dalek from series 1. While Dalek examines the dynamic and the parallels between the doctor and the Daleks. Into the Dalek has the doctor trying to show the dalek morality and help it rise above it's hatred and the dalek shows the doctor that he has the same hatred for the daleks within himself.
    I think "You are good Dalek" means that the dalek see's the doctor as a good man even if he's not sure about it himself.
    And the question of this episode of, can there be a good dalek and what would that mean for the universe and to the doctor? It’s a very thought provoking and original idea.
    I'd like to know what you think

    • @LazerzZ
      @LazerzZ  Год назад

      I don't think the questions posed are bad, I just wish the rest of the season bothered to answer them or tackle them, Into the Dalek isn't bad on it's own, it's just bad in the context of the overall show because it doesn't contribute anything outside of vaguely suggesting ideas that would be fun to explore but the show just never does.

    I was with you the whole way and fully respected your opinion on each episode in this, until your stance and placement of twice upon a time, It was the perfect ending for the 12th Doctor and is my favourite episode of his entire run, Matching the final days of the 12th Doctor to the original doctor, who's thoughts and feelings about regeneration we didn't originally get to see when his death and first regeneration came around it was beautifully done, 12 also got to say goodbye to his companions Bill, Nardole and especially Clara like 10 got to say goodbye, Yes its not perfect is has a few pacing issues and the "villains" are a bit meh but overall it is an absolutely beautiful episode and in my opinion this where doctor who ended, The doctor died when the 12th doctor regenerated into her, and no amount of dragging David back as a short lived incarnation for the 60th is going to revive doctor who for me, Even with RTD and Ncuti as 15

    My own personal ranking that I’ve never really considered before but since we’re here I might as well lol:
    (Congrats if you’re reading this now, it means I’m still watching the video and editing the list, you’re #early :p)
    Rose: Great. While it accomplishes a lot of setup for a new audience and is extremely competent at the characterisation of our main duo, I’ve always felt that it falls short of what a great introduction episode can be, perhaps mainly due to the unimpressive villain. Nothing to critique really, just missing that something that would push it up a level.
    The End Of The World: Middling. Juggling the first true adventure for Rose combined with the story of the episode was always going to be a challenge, but I just don’t think EOTW accomplished it very well. I like the theme of the episode being that everyone was so focused on their own survival they didn’t even notice the thing they’d come to witness, and it has a lot of moments that I really love but it also has lot of dumb, contrived, nonsensically written moments as well. I think the character moments between Nine and Rose are enough to save it but based purely on story execution, it would be much lower down on the list.
    The Unquiet Dead: Middling. Like with EOTW, there are some good moments of characterisation that save the episode, but it’s overall just a forgettable episode. On an objective analysis, the threat is well established and presented effectively so I can’t fault them there, I just can’t recall that much worth remembering, I can’t even remember how they defeated the Geth on memory alone. But on the other hand, Dickens is a great addition, not-Gwen (I don’t remember her ancestor’s name) was phenomenally creepy and cryptic with her prophecies and the scene in the dungeon where the Doctor explains the concept of time in flux to Rose is appropriately horrifying. All good things, I just wish there were more good things to accompany them.
    Aliens Of London/WW3: Middling. I keep putting episodes in this tier cos none of these episodes do anything horrifically bad, but none of them do anything terribly impressive either. The span of episodes between Rose and Father’s Day is what makes me wary of recommending Doctor Who to people as I can see it turning them off as problem episodes. So I like the slitheen as villains, I like the political commentary, I like that they make the scale of the threat feel genuine, I love Mickey and Jackie’s characterisation, I love Harriet Jones and I love that the Doctor comes around on Mickey, but also… farting aliens? Walking pigs? Vinegar explosions? ….Really? I can’t say I find it bad but I can’t say I find it good either so into the middling pile it goes.
    Dalek: God Tier. What more can be said? The villain is terrifying, as is the Doctor. Rose’s humanity has such an important role in the story as what causes all the death but also what averts it, which I adore. Every scene is tense and dramatic as everyone knows what will happen of the Dalek escapes, and for the Doctor, it’s like one last battle he has to conclude. But most importantly, it establishes WHY we should be terrified of just one Dalek, nevermind a whole fleet. It is as close to a perfect episode of Who as it is possible to have.
    The Long Game: Good. I struggled with whether to put this in middling or good, as I do like a lot of this episode and what it touches on thematically… but also it’s not done very well. I like the otherworldly and alien aspect of the future, I like Adam as a colossal failure, I like the Editor as a character but also, the set design is very bland, the big blob monster is silly and the plot is serviceable and mediocre. I think the way the finale ties back into this brings it up a lot from just middling, but that’s still not saying much.
    Father’s Day: God Tier. About as perfect a time travel story about the dangers and consequences of altering the past as it is possible to have. Rose’s character goes on such a journey learning the importance of what it means to be a time traveller at the Doctor’s side in this universe with the rules and responsibilities that entails. The reapers are meaning and threatening though I wish we saw them in something else, as I was obsessed with seeing more of them as a kid. What’s more, I love that the true hero of the story is Pete, who does what he was meant to doe and die in a stupid hit and run accident but instead of it being tragic, he makes his death heroic by sacrificing himself to save his daughter. It shows what was really in his character when everyone else assumed he was just a failure, and does not diminish anyone else in the process of uplifting him. Just a powerful, POWERFUL episode, and what I would show people as the second Who episode to keep them hooked. I just adore it.
    The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances: Great. This two parter is just so well done, and accomplishes everything it sets out to do with a surprisingly memorable and menacing villain, a story of motherhood and unintended consequences and as an introduction to Captain Jack. What keeps it from being higher is that I felt some of the scenes get very drawn out and padded so I find myself bored in a lot of them, but what’s good in these episodes is still really good.
    Boom Town: Fantastic. It’s this high just because of “I can do this all day,” I could watch a 10 hour edit of that, I love it so much. 😂 But on a serious note, the episode tackles the topics of justice, revenge, punishment, redemption and a person’s true nature SO well. As a character study of Margaret/Blaine, it is phenomenal especially as how it contrasts with the Doctor and how he acts knowing what he’s done and why he can walk with righteousness while condemning her. Likewise, I love that it gives character to Mickey whose jealousy and bitterness is really at the forefront here as the consequences of Rose treating him like a toy to be picked up whenever is addressed so well as you understand why he feels that way but also why Rose can’t stick around anymore. The only thing that keeps it from being god tier is that her plan to escape is, well, silly, and I never understood how she was going to surf her way out of there. “Stand back boys, surfs up” is also remarkably cringe in hindsight. But the ending of the TARDIS giving her another chance really saves it again. I wish I could give it god tier but sadly it just falls short.
    Bad Wolf: Great. While most of the two parters go together, I really do have to separate the S1 premiere out as I have such different feelings about these two episodes. Primarily, Bad Wolf is held back by dated cultural references, as when you introduce new, and especially non-British, viewers to this episode you can see the confusion on their faces as they don’t get it unlike the British public would have in 2005. Also, the plot is just very basic and setup-y for the final shot of the Dalek fleet to establish the finale’s threat. Tho even as a kid, I knew Rose wasn’t dead so that subplot had a very obvious conclusion. I like Lynda, but not that much. Not really much else to say that except if the final 5 minutes weren’t in this episode, it’d be much lower than it is for me as Nine’s “No” speech is one of his character’s defining moments.
    Parting Of The Ways: God tier. The weakest of the god tier episodes as the conclusion is a bit contrived and resolves everything a bit too easily, but still a god tier episode nevertheless. It does EVERYTHING so damn well from the threat of the Daleks to the Doctor having to save Rose to revisiting his choice from the Time War to sacrifice innocents to defeat the Daleks to the plucky human resistance doing all they could to Jackie coming around on helping, the episode is packed with so much tension and drama and raw, human emotion as well as the mind blowing conclusion to the Bad Wolf story thread. There are also just several visuals that just get me. The sight of the Dalek fleet leaving their ships combined with Murray Gold’s consistently god tier score just puts a smile on my face, as does Bad Wolf Rose. The “You need a doctor” moment came off as more cringe than comforting and I certainly never wanted these characters to be romantic but it’s whatever. I just adore this episode so much as an episode of TV, as a Who story, as a season finale and as Chris’ send off episode. Not flawless but amazing all the same.
    The Christmas Invasion: Great. You can split this episode into two parts, namely pre and post Ten. Before he really comes back with “Did you miss me,” the episode has a lot of tension and dread as no one knows the scale of the threat or how to combat the Sycorax. The absence of the Doctor is so noticeable in how much Harriet is struggling to just keep things going without risking mass death and/or the enslavement of the human race, but also… the Doctor is absent. There is just something huge missing from this story, and while the other characters are strong enough to carry it on their own without it being boring, it’s just not the same. But after he comes back with the greatest Doctor introduction scene we’ve ever had, the episode improves markedly as the doubt the characters and audience were feeling for Chris’ absence are washed away in the wave of David Tennant’s charisma. There is a lot to love about this episode, but also… the robot santas and killer tree are very silly. It has the capacity to be fantastic but just misses the mark, yet is solidly a great episode.

      New Earth: Great. The word that comes to mind when I think of this episode is “good,” not great or anything above that but serviceable and solid. I love the moral dilemma presented between what amount of suffering is worth a good outcome, I love both David and Billie having the chance to play Cassandra, I love Ten’s delighted cheers when the cure works on the patients, I love seeing the Face of Boe again and I LOVE Cassandra’s death scene in that the last person to tell her she was beautiful… was her all along. A part of me wants to put it higher but I know it just doesn’t belong there for reasons I can’t explain. There’s just an element missing, or perhaps present, I can’t explain that holds it back from being a truly amazing episode which it has the potential to be.
      (YOU CAN’T JUST INVENT ANOTHER CATEGORY JAMES FFS)
      Tooth & Claw: Bad. I really wanted to like this episode when I was younger because of Queen Victoria and the idea of a werewolf in this form, but it’s just not very good. The monks are goofy as hell, the werewolf is very boring as an antagonist, his origins aren’t well explained, his human form is funny more than scary, the connection with the Koh-I-nor is paper thin and the conclusion is more mumbo jumbo than usual. The Lord of the castle has a pretty good redemption arc but that’s not enough to save the episode. It is simply a boring, bad episode which sucks because the premise had a lot of promise.
      School Reunion: Fantastic. This episode would overall just be a great story if Sarah Jane wasn’t here but her presence lifts this episode up immensely and her scenes on their own are god tier. Yet even outside of her return to Who, I like the Krillitanes as villains, I adore Anthony Head with this role, I love the idea of using children to unlock the secrets of the universe, I love the utilisation of the school setting, I adore K9, I like how Sarah gets the Doctor to reject the proposal by coming to terms with her own time being over, I love that as a kid I was asking why they didn’t just pull the fire alarm since they’re giant bats and then Kenny did just that on a very personal level lol. It just isn’t special enough to be god tier, and the concept of the God Maker is far too important an idea to be relegated to this one off episode which makes it absurd that they are the only villains to ever attempt this in hindsight, and also the “fight scene” was very, very silly even for Doctor Who. It does a lot right as an episode, but sadly not enough.
      Girl In The Fireplace: Fantastic. I know everyone ranks this as god tier, and I cannot find any fault with the episode from a storytelling perspective as the writing quality is flawless here, but I’m just not THAT in love with it. There’s just something that hits for other people and doesn’t for me as I’m never struck with the tragedy of the episode as a lot of people are but I can’t deny that the tragedy is there. There are few time travel stories which are able to capture so much with only one episode tackling the themes of loss, obsession, love and, of course, time. I will say I think the clockwork robots are very bland antagonists who lose their appeal, at least for me, and I can’t remain threatened by them for long. I acknowledge this episode’s superb quality, I just wish it hit me like it did other people.
      Rise Of The Cybermen/The Age Of Steel: Great. When I was younger, I would probably have ranked this Fantastic or even god tier, I loved this two parter so much but with age, I can see a lot of its shortcomings more but it is still a solid story. I like the depiction of the alternate universe, I like Mickey’s character journey, I love the design of the Cybermen, I love the dystopian vibes of this world, I think the threat of the Cybermen is extremely well done and all the characters have something of worth and value to contribute to the story, no one feels left to the wayside. Yet it doesn’t have any truly striking element that makes it a very powerful story, it’s themes are put across well enough but it’s more of a standard action story than anything. Nothing wrong with that, but it pales in comparison to some of the others on this list. Yet it remains a solidly great story.
      The Idiot’s Lantern: Middling. I like a lot of what this episode is going for, the setting is really interesting and the dynamic with Tommy’s family was really well done but the episode overall is just very meh. The Wire is a goofy villain, “FEEEEEDDD MEEE” will never not be funny, Magpie’s anguish isn’t very well established, the faceless people are just silly looking and I found much of the climax rather boring. I can’t say it’s outright bad cos it is competently done, but nothing stands out as particularly good either.
      The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit: God tier. This has been one of my favourite sets of episodes ever since I first saw it, I cannot express how much I adore them. I love the concept, I love the themes, I love the mystery surrounding everything, I love the cast of characters and I above all love the uncertainty that we never know exactly what the Beast is or how much it was telling the truth concerning it’s own nature, but if anyone was going to get into a philosophical debate with THE DEVIL, it’s the Doctor. I particularly love how much Rose comes into her own here and asserts herself as a leader when the Doctor is gone. The only underwhelming part is that the Ood aren’t very threatening enemies, but they’re effective enough. I can see a lot of people just putting it in fantastic but for me, I really think this episode excels as a piece of storytelling and while not the strongest episode deserves to be recognised for what it does and does brilliantly.
      Love & Monsters: Bad. I will say, if we were only taking the first two acts of the episode into account, this would easily be a god tier episode. I absolutely LOVE these characters, I love Elton and the whole cast of LINDA, I adore seeing their daily lives in this time, I love how Victor’s arrival ruined it all, I love his turmoil over how he’s been using Jackie, I love how his relationship with Ursula develops and I love what a commentary it is on fan communities and the role of having fun vs doing whatever the group was formed for. But sadly, there aren’t just two acts. The absorbaloff ruins the entire episode with one of the silliest stupidest climaxes in all of New Who, bar none. I could tolerate a goofy ending in a goody episode, but a goofy ending in what was such a well written episode before? That’s what hurts me the most. I want to give this episode all the accolades for the things it does well but I must acknowledge it’s flaws too, leaving it with a - perhaps undeserved - bad rating.
      Fear Her: Awful. I don’t hate the episode as much as everyone does, and I do like a lot of the elements in it, but there’s simply no denying that it’s a very dumb story. I think the initial mystery works, the concept of the Isolus is fascinating, the setting is surprisingly interesting for the time it was made and the themes it’s trying to tackle are interesting but none of the plot beats are executed very well, the pencil monsters are laughably bad and the Isolus has an absurdly ridiculous amount of power to be never seen again. Perhaps there’s a decent story in there somewhere but you really have to dig - ON A COUNCIL ROAD - to find it.
      Army Of Ghosts/Doomsday: Fantastic. I think this is on the lower end of fantastic episodes, but still better than great episodes. The mystery of the ghosts is really interesting, the introduction of Torchwood is well done, the sphere is mysterious, Jackie is a great contribution and the way the Cybermen managed to cement victory so easily was phenomenal. And following on from this, the long awaited battle of Daleks and Cybermen was everything I could have wanted if I knew to anticipate it, Rose’s farewell is appropriately soul crushing and the victory is agonisingly bittersweet. A great finale to the season, and what we assumed was to Rose’s character as well.
      The Runaway Bride: Fantastic. The introduction of the iconic Donna Noble is phenomenal and her character was amazingly set up for what we assumed was only one episode, but Tate knocked it out of the park. Their dynamic alone is above god tier, but sadly the rest of the episode drags them down a bit. I don’t like the return of the Santa robots, I think the racnoss are an under-utilised concept as this ancient race from the dawn of the universe since we never see them again and Lance was just very forgettable. On the other hand, the Doctor watching the empress wail over his children was dark as hell, a perfectly executed scene. It has the capacity to be god tier, it just sadly misses the mark.
      Smith & Jones: Fantastic. Just another really well done episode. Martha has an amazing introduction, the idea of being on the moon for outer space police as neutral ground is hillarious in a good way, the judoon are memorable for the limited time they have and even the plasmavore is appropriately sinister. Not much else to say except that it’s just really, really good.
      The Shakespeare Code: Bad. I really want to like this episode since air love this portrayal of Shakespeare, I love the lead witch, I love the horror they inflict… but it’s overall just very unimpressive. I can’t even really explain why, I just get a sense of boredom when I think about the episode, which sucks because a lot of the pieces are there for a truly great historic episode, it just fumbles the execution of them.

    • @Longshanks1690
      @Longshanks1690 Год назад

      Gridlock: Great. This is another episode that I wish I could place higher because I love so many of the aspects of it, but something just feels missing from it. I love the setting, I love the culture of the motorway, I love what has happened to the people outside of it, I love the final scenes of the face of boe, I love the renditions of That Old Rugged Cross and Abide With Me, I love the dread, horror and despair that has been created in this world and realising that the only reason the people trapped are living as they are is because they were trapped to save them from an even worse fate. But I think it’s the pacing that keeps me unable to rank it higher because it does feel very slow and boring in a lot of the middle section, which I grant is the purpose but it also doesn’t help much. I’d rank the final 15 minutes or so fantastic, possibly even god tier, but the episode as a whole sadly doesn’t match the same quality.
      Daleks In Manhattan/Evolution Of the Daleks: Middling. When I was younger, I would have ranked them fantastic as I really enjoyed them. A few years ago, I would have ranked them awful as I really disliked them on rewatch. But now, especially knowing how Helen Raynor felt after seeing the visceral fan reaction, I’m much more kind to them and I appreciate what she was trying to accomplish here. I actually do think the idea of Daleks abandoning their paradigm to survive through the only species who endures more than them, humanity, is really interesting and poses a lot of questions for them even though their strictly villainous worldview. That being said, the design of Human Sec and the pig slaves are silly, no question. But the supporting cast is fine, they do their jobs ok. There are just a lot of mixed elements here, and while I do enjoy it now, there’s no doubt there’s a lot here that could have been much improved on.
      The Lazarus Experiment: Middling. If the character of Lazarus himself were not done as well as he is with his obsession of escaping death at any cost because he believes himself above other people, commenting on themes of death, justice and mortality, this episode would be outright awful with how goofy most of the plot is as the idea of an “option rejected by evolution” doesn’t make any sense at all. I do like Martha’s mother and siblings, but those characters aren’t enough to save the episode. I appreciate the ideas they were going for, they just deserved to be in a better story.
      42: A war crime. The only scene in this episode I liked was Martha calling her mother, that was fantastic quality. Everything else was awful and I hate this episode so fucking much, it’s stupid and everyone involved with it should feel bad for subjecting us to it. I have nothing else to say about it, just straight up terrible.
      Human Nature/Family Of Blood: God tier. If I have to explain why this episode deserves to be here, you probably aren’t a Doctor Who fan. The character work here is flawless and impeccable, and “we wanted to live forever” stands out as one of the most iconic moments of Doctor Who history. There are no flaws with this story, everything about it is simply perfect, it’s probably my favourite Who story in the modern era.
      Blink: God tier. This is what many consider a great introductory episode for new fans to get acquainted with Doctor Who and… yeah, that’s a great notion because this episode does so much to introduce you to the world of this show without ever really showing the Doctor as a part of the story, he exists as this kind of outside force influencing Sally’s story. The writing is impeccable, the angels are terrifying, the mystery is brilliantly built up, Sally is a great character and the music is flawless. Blink is simply a masterpiece of storytelling, you could make an entire film out of this concept.
      Utopia: God tier. I almost wanted to package it with the other two of its trilogy, but Utopia deserves to stand on its own as a truly god tier episode. The idea of the TARDIS going to the end of the universe just to escape Jack is phenomenal, the setting is depressing and dark, the character work is great and, of course, Derek Jacobi delivers a standout performance as Yana and The Master for the short time that he has the role, which Big Finish thankfully corrected but I digress. The scene where Martha observes the watch alone is a masterpiece because they already went to the trouble of showing what this is so you know to be intrigued and afraid of what it means that he has it. The only thing I disliked was scary teeth lady in the base bearing her teeth for the audience which was… silly, but other than that, the episode was an amazing, top tier episode of Who.
      Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords: Great. Unfortunately, the latter two episodes of this three parter have a number of flaws which prevent them from being on the same level as Utopia but they’re still very good. The Master’s level of control is sinister and his plan is terrifying, especially with the realisation that he’s won and the Doctor failed. I love that Martha is the one who is the real hero who unites the world in hope of the Doctor and you does his plan using the same mechanism by which the Master established control in the first place. But sadly, a lot of the plot is contrived and rather poorly paced so I can’t even put it in Fantastic but it still has a lot of good to be admired.
      Voyage of the Damned: Great. Not much to say about this one, except that it has a lot of great character moments, the tension is incredibly high and the loss of Astrid is unbelievably tragic for the short time they shared together. Unfortunately it’s just shy of being fantastic.
      Partners In Crime: Great. What a fantastic reintroduction of Donna’s character to the show, what an iconic way to have them reunite, what a… middling plot to being them back, ok the fat babies aren’t the most thrilling story but that’s honestly secondary compared to their character interactions which we’re all really here for. I especially loved the “they just missed each other” moments straight out of An American Tail, absolutely brilliant. The adipose plot wasn’t the best story ever but it was serviceable enough to provide a good foundation for their character dynamic to build up off of which they do brilliantly.
      Fires of Pompeii: Great. There are aspects of this episode which are not just fantastic but outright god tier. Everything with Donna’s desire to save people, the Doctor’s struggle with what he wants to do vs what he ought to do as a Time Lord, the theme of time is at the forefront of this episode and all of it is executed flawlessly. Then there are other, weaker aspects to the story which drag the episode down a lot and don’t really need to be there like the Sybilline sisterhood which don’t add much. I also love the ending shot of the son being truly grateful for the household gods as the Doctor not only saved his life but gave him a purpose too, he’s a really underappreciated character as far as side characters go. There are a lot of amazing elements in this episode, but sadly not every element is.

    Im with you on how Doctor Who is at its best when mixing that human emotion and relatability into the plot and the Doctor's character, but I feel you had a hard time understanding how you can't put that into the focus a lot of the time when you do bigger or more complex story stuff. Daleks in Manhattan and Evolution of The Daleks is amazing and everything it shows and builds up not only keeps the Daleks scary while also showing them doing more dangerous stuff in numbers, but also strengthens what was shown in Dalek and the more stuff we will see with them in their last David Tennent story. Same goes with the introduction of the Cybermen in the new show and other episodes.

    After my rewatch of Classic and New Who, my list ended up being more negative, with the RTD era ending up as the weakest era so far. Episodes like Love and Monsters, Last of the Time Lords, Voyage of the Damned, The Doctor’s Daughter, Journey’s End, The End of Time all ended up in A War Crime, and aside from the Moffat episodes there were scant pickings for episodes I really loved. Moffat’s era ended up as more of my cup of tea, with Series 6 and 9 coming out as my favourites. With Chibnall I felt it gets worse as it goes on, with series 11 being better than 1, 2 and the 2009 specials, but with series 13 as the weakest of the revival. I agree with you, re The Day Of The Doctor. It's pretty mid to me. I preferred the sixtieth specials. Especially #2 and #3.
    But I just found the plot pretty 'meh'. It just felt like fan service rather than a fascinating plot. I prefer episodes like Midnight, Water On Mars, Listen, and Amy's Choice to TDOTD.

    So much of the discourse around Jodie was the gender of the Doctor. Even though the same faux outrage did not come to the surface for Michelle Gomez. But when the lead character became a woman, the manufactured angst machines cranked right up. My issue was not the Doctor becoming a woman but rather the writing (as you note in the video) the characterization (sunshine and rainbows when she was explaining history and context and downright anti social reactions when empathy was called for) and the overall lack of gravitas from the actress. In another imagining of this era, we would have someone like Phoebe Waller-Bridge. I think Jodie is a fine actress but would have been suited to a featured role in an episode ala Carey Mulligan.

    I believe in The Day of the Doctor, all three should have destroyed Gallifrey together, it would have been a bittersweet moment. 10 and 11 kept disowning The War Doctor in parts of the episode but near the end, realising that he had to make the most difficult decision of their lives and accepting he was THE Doctor in that moment was really nice to see.
    But of course, Clara had to butt into a decision that’s way out of her depth.

    I have to disagree on certain episodes especially Chibnall's (i think they should be higher) but it is unfair to bring POTD up only because it is the end and you know what is coming later. also to anyone else reading this it is unfair to call a season bad if you have not watched the full season not including shorts.

    • @LazerzZ
      @LazerzZ  6 месяцев назад +1

      Fair enough to disagree, not everyone is going to enjoy things in the same way, or find issues the same way. I also agree bringing POTD up for that reason is silly, but the video was sort of meant to be a bit of fun more than a solid ranking, I'd probably change half of these. I have seen every season of the show though, I didn't rank anything I haven't seen.

    i’m always sad to see the hate season 7 gets across the fandom. 7b is my comfort doctor who , i love the gothic fairy tale vibes and Clara and Elevens effortless and not too serious romance. but i KNOW i am in a small minority and despite this personal bias , share most of the typical whovian zeitgeist beliefs abt the show / episode rankings lol

    • @LazerzZ
      @LazerzZ  2 месяца назад

      I can have fun with series 7b, but the major issue I find is that it really does a disservice to the 11th doctor, he steadily got worse from series 5 but 7b is a huge departure from what his character always was and even in some episodes, what The Doctor as a whole is all about. If I ignore that I can have fun for sure and 11 and Clara have decent chemistry, but I do think it's a shame how poor 11 became as a consistent character by the end of his run.

    I can't believe what a Doctor Who fan you are! All I have to say without doing a rebut video is Gridlock is one of my favorite episodes, mostly for the character development, so I agree there. However, I LOVE The Idiot's Lantern all the way down to the corny single jail cell filled with faceless extras clinching their fists on and off, the Long Game is quintessential Season 1 Eccleston Who, The God Complex is profoundly "meh" rather than fantastic, though still worth watching. And finally, The Girl Who waited had so much potential, in concept, but in all practicality it's just awful. For that matter, any time the show attempts to make characters "older" it fails on its face! They tried it with the 10th Doctor, Amy, and the 11th Doctor, none of them could convince me they were physically that old. Otherwise, we we like and dislike the same eps, just about!

      That's absolutely INSANE... Chibnall cannot write to save his life. Sure S2 of RTD might be his weakest, but it's still very very competent and entertaining television with plots that make sense and characters with arcs and consistency and episodes with actual theming. Chibnall literally writes like an 8 year old who doesn't understand the first thing about what techniques actually create good art.
