    THANK YOU!!!
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome back to the channel for another thrilling tier list ranking. This time, we're diving into the epic world of Doctor Who series finales. It's a journey through time and emotions as we assess each finale, from the truly iconic to the slightly underwhelming.
Hold onto your sonic screwdrivers as we venture through the timey-wimey tapestry of New Who's grand finales. But wait, there's a twist! We've got more categories than you can shake a Dalek at, and we're not afraid to use them. If you want to play along, find the tier list linked below and share your results with us on Twitter @crispypro.
First up, we revisit Series 1 with the unforgettable "Bad Wolf" and "Parting of the Ways". Reality TV gone mad, Daleks, and a heartbreaking regeneration. Classic Russell T Davies.
Series 2 presents "Army of Ghosts" and "Doomsday". A love story across dimensions, Torchwood's grand entrance, and that scene on Bad Wolf Bay that could melt even a Cyberman's heart.
Series 3 introduces us to "Utopia", "The Sound of Drums", and "Last of the Time Lords". Martha's shining moment, the rise of the Master, and a touch of timey-wimey magic.
Fast forward to Series 4 with "The Stolen Earth" and "Journey's End". All companions on deck, Dalek-Cyberman faceoff, and the unforgettable "I don't want to go" moment.
Series 5 gives us "The Big Bang" and "The Pandorica Opens". Timey-wimey confusion, a universe-ending prison, and Amy's wedding with a twist.
Series 6 delivers "The Wedding of River Song" as timelines collide and reality gets wibbly-wobbly. But is it enough to match the standards set by previous finales?
Series 7 (Part 1) presents "The Angels Take Manhattan". Farewell to the Ponds and a Weeping Angels tale that tugs at the heartstrings.
Series 7 (Part 2) takes us to "The Name of the Doctor". Secrets, introductions, and an epic trip to Trenzalore. Plus, Missy's debut as the Master.
Series 8 gives us the two-part finale "Dark Water" and "Death in Heaven". The Cybermen rise, and Clara's character arc takes a pivotal turn.
Series 9 shines with "Heaven Sent" and "Hell Bent". The Doctor trapped, Gallifrey in sight, and Clara's poignant journey.
Series 10 impresses with "World Enough and Time" and "The Doctor Falls". The Master's return, Cybermen horror, and a standout finale for the Twelfth Doctor.
Series 11 takes a different approach with the understated "The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos". Does it deliver on the grand finale expectation?
Series 12 brings the divisive "The Timeless Children". A deep dive into the Doctor's past with controversy and revelations. Where does it stand in the ranks?
And finally, Series 13's "The Vanquishers". Flux comes to an end, but does it provide a satisfying conclusion to this epic story arc?
So there you have it, fellow time travelers and Whovians! My definitive ranking of New Who's series finales, from highs to lows, and everything in between. Share your thoughts in the comments and remember to subscribe and hit that notification bell for more Doctor Who content

In my view Hell Bent is the last of a three parter; Face the Raven, Heaven Sent, Hell Bent, it's a classic three part narrative. Similar to Utopia, Sound of Drums and Last of the Timelords.

I'd say it's better described as a trilogy rather than an actual 3 parter

I think Hell Bent as one story because all three episodes would imo have to be written by the same person and series 9 has loose two parters and true two parters.

Agreed. I consider Utopia, Turn Left, Face the Raven, and World Enough and Time, all the first of three-parters. Each episode is it’s own story, but much more so part of a bigger narrative, but more closed off than entire season arcs.

can someone explain to me why World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls is so beloved? for me it was a Heaven Sent/Hell Bent situation all over again where the premise and set up and execution of the first part was perfect, literally amazing and perfect, but the second half was just a bunch of messing about and nonsense that doesn't pay anything off. I was so painfully disappointed by The Doctor Falls and I don't get the hype behind it.

The best series finale is obviously Series 5 - pretty flawless! It's the kind of story that's so crazy it just shouldn't work (especially after that cliffhanger), and yet Moffat knocks it out of the park
    Then Series 1.
People always call it the end of the Bad Wolf storyline though - it's not about that. This is The 9th Doctor finding himself in basically the same situation he was in during The Time War, and completing his character arc by choosing a different outcome; The 9th Doctor in episode 6 wouldnt've done that but, with help from Rose, he is now a changed man - and then he LITERALLY becomes a changed man. It's poetry! That series was so well thought out and the finale ties EVERYTHING together, not just the Bad Wolf thing
And then sure, Series 10's was great too...

I love Heaven Sent, my favourite Capaldi episode, and it annoys me that its associated with the God awful Hell Bent.
Heaven Sent was the perfect way to end Series 9, and have a completely different story take place on Gallifrey for a Christmas special.
But no, Moffatt couldn't leave it there and had to completely undo everything and make the Doctors imprisonment in his confession dial completely pointless

I'm the complete oposite with Hell Bent. I have tried but I simpley just don't like the begginng scenes for various reasons, but I find myself enjoying the episode a lot more when Clara comes back to to the chemistry between her and 12. There are things I don't like after that point though, such as the constant cutbacks to the diner which completely ruin the pacing for me.

I don’t hate the timeless child messed with the regeneration count I hate how the doctor was the reason behind everything to do with timelords, regeneration, and the stories that deal with regenerations. It ruined Matt Smiths last story and the 12th doctors hybrid being himself. I’m just hoping the master was the reason behind it and putting false memories into the doctors head.

    • @Mejoree113
      @Mejoree113 9 месяцев назад

The Doctor isn't really behind everything, Tecteun is. The Doctor seems to constantly be a child through the Regeneration experiments, and it's just something that happens to them. Yes they are 'more important' but not because of anything they did, or fate, or anything that makes them particularly 'extraordinary'.

I adore S6 and the S6 finale lol. I really don't understand why it's so low for people. I must be blinded by my love for River haha. Anything involving her is right at the top. I think S6 is so high for me due to River's speech to the Doctor, "I can't let you die, without knowing you are loved. By so many and so much... and by no one more than me." Idk, just that one sentiment, especially with all the Doc's self-loathing, "I can't let you die without knowing you are loved" oof, gut punch.

  • @Dalek97
    @Dalek97 Год назад +5

Personally I think RTD broke the numbering. He had the Doctor regenerate in Series 4 with no consequence at all to it. So either someone was going to count that as a regeneration or come up with some contrived explanation for why the Master, who sought more lives, didn't just do that if it's a loophole around the thirteen life limit. Plus it makes Ten more sympathetic in TEOT if he's on his penultimate life.

The Timeless Child plot-line is seemingly a continuation of the founding fathers plotline (sometimes known as the Cartmel Masterplan) from the 1980s, which was intended to bring back the mystery of the Doctor that was arguably lost in "The War Games" when they made him a Time-Lord. Chris Chibnall has stated that he wanted to dispel what he calls the sense that there was a "locked-in, fixed myth" for Doctor Who. This is why the fob watch has been left in the Tardis for now, so the show has effectively been reset to the status quo of the 1960s, when the Doctor's origins were up in the air. Time is a character from the 1990s novels. It is the sentient, cosmic embodiment of the force of time and, in the books, is one of the Eternals, a species first seen in "Enlightenment" They were recently referenced in "Can you Hear Me?".

My favorite finales are series 1, 4, and 10. These three stand out the most in my mind for their performances, plot, and concepts. As a fan of the daleks and Davros, the series 1 and 4 finales were really great. I've always been a fan of the original cybermen, so to see a story that brought back the Mondasian versions was great and scary.
As for Series 8 and 7, they were great and enjoyable, but not as much as the other three. The same thing can be said about series 5's finale. As for series 3 and 2, while fun to watch and enjoy, I'm not a fan of the 10 and Rose romance story, and of course, the whole space Jesus part in "Last of the Time Lords". Series 9, while having some really great parts like the first half and the Doctor stepping back into the TARDIS and getting his new Sonic, was not that great. Series 6 was very forgettable for me, there were some great moments, but nothing groundbreaking. As for series 11, 12, and 13, I have very mixxed feelings about. I'm the kind of person who enjoys the experience of watching any show or movie, even if it's bad, so the thought of it being bad most of the time won't click until a second viewing. Series 11, and 13's finales were very boring and/or convoluted. As for "the Timeless Children", this is the first Doctor Who episode that actually got me angry. As someone who grew up with the show, I just felt that the Doctor being the Timeless Child makes no sense given the established lore for over the past 50 (I'm going off of when the episode aired) years. I just think it's disrespectful and undermining the Doctor as a character and what their story had been..

    1. Hell Bent was great. Not the best, but great.
    2. The Timeless Children... Yeah, on its own, completely removed from anything and everything else, it's only kinda shit. More or less just not worth the time. But in the context of the rest of the show, this is the WORST story ever told in Doctor Who, and that includes things like "Kill the Moon", "Kerblam", and other hilariously horrible stories. It actively burns canon to the ground. No other story had ever managed to destroy the Doctor Who canon so much.

I reckon the Series 4 finale was overrated - there was too many cast members, too much going on, and generally too loud and bombastic. Series 5 however, is an underrated. Really enjoyed the pared back nature.
Totally agree Moffat knocked it out of the park with the Series 10 finale - amazing stuff.
Also agree that the Series 11 finale was incredibly dull. Nearly five years later, and I can't remember a single thing about it... except that it was dull.

Pretty much agree with the whole list aside from The Stolen Earth/Journey's End would be at the top with Capaldis's last finale, and the Timeless Children. Would be right at the bottom.

My personal thoughts on my worst and best
Best: Series 10 2 parter. Just wow. An excellent companion exit, a phenomenal multi master concept, the cybermen regain a fair amount of their original horror elements, Capaldi is at his best in my opinion (I love grouchy Capaldi, but damn he sells all the emotion, that speech about doing what is right, him helping a small group of humans regardless of if it's just delaying the inevitable, I just love him here) I don't shut up about this episode it's just great. The concept of time moving differently for the different groups of the main cast is genius and using that to show the cybermen upgrade themselves over years while its only been hours for the survivors is so cool. The master's betrayal of not only the doctor but missy too, a full self sabotage out of spite for the doctor. He can't stand the idea of giving up his malice that he commits suicide the long way round because he hasn't experienced her growth and doesn't believe he ever will, while she lays dying in the dirt wondering if she actually could redeem herself, or if he was right. The questions this finale poses for the master's potential in the future of RTD2 are mind boggling, will a master redemption story ever be retried or can they actually never be redeemed. Was the master right or was missy? We'll have to see if they pick that back up in later series. It's the perfect balance in the main timelords. 12 is reitious and kind, missy is evil with a real compassionate heart burried under centuries of conflict with the doctor, and the master just being fully consumed and amused by his own evil. It's just a joy to watch, I have absolutely no issues besides the teasing lead into the underwhelming Christmas special, because if this was Capaldi's swan song this would possibly be the best Doctor exit of all of Doctor Who, not just the best finale.
Worst: tied between series 11 and 12.
11 is like you said bland. It's just a below average Doctor Who episode that's lazy on all fronts, evident as it was literally a first draft. And 12 is just painful. Canon breaking aside, it borders on disrespectful to the long term audience as well as the short term. It offers up explainations of the doctor's origin that in the grand scheme of things are totally irrelevant and inherently damage their entire history with Galifrey and their whimsical nature. It makes it to where the doctor isn't special because they broke free of Galifreyan society and did good throughout the universe, but instead were special by birthright and created the timelords making the doctor the most important being in all of creation simply for existing, which again negates the whole point of the doctor being some nobody from their homeworld that BECAME important. And remove all implications of the timeless child aspects, which is the entire point of the story, absolutely nothing happens. It's a bland destruction of thw cybermen which is undone mere episodes later. No lasting impact from a story that promised earth shattering revelations, no short term impact as all its creative choices have since been either dismissed or outright ruined, and they destroyed Galifrey over this terrible idea that they've already forgotten about. So many story opportunities gone by the wayside over something that practically doesn't exist anymore. It's a boring episode with an even worse base concept. But it's still tied with the series 11 finale because allowing a first draft of any episode of television (unless it's an immediate masterpiece first try) is absolutely absurd, especially when the episode count was cut from 12 to 10, there's no good excuses to film a first draft when you can't even develop a single main character beyond the surface level apart from ONE episode. Less episodes to worry about yet less work was put into every single one.
Those two finales are gonna be hard to beat for worst, unless RTD gets hammered in the writing room and just has a random side character narrating softcore doctor who smut or something stupid. It's going to be a tough challenge to write a worse finale than those ones and I pose that challenge to any writer that wants to take it lol

He didn't blame Moffat for Chibnall's writing at all. He blamed Moffat for setting a precedent for breaking the numbering of the Doctor's regenerations. Personally, I blame Robert Holmes for inventing the dumb 12-regen limit to begin with; it's caused no end of unnecessary trouble.

Crispy's entitled to his opinions. It's all subjective in the end. I must confess, not to care for the precise order of doctor. For me, the story is central. I'm still kind of waiting for a pay off, for the timeless child. It just went nowhere, and meant nothing. Maybe RTD2 can fix it, with a decent story, but I suspect he'll move past it, leaving it to Big Finish. Chris' tenure felt like a massive misfire, he didn't shine as Showrunner, or lead writer. The budget must be harder to balance in such an effects heavy show, (against Broadchurch), and with the pandemic. It's time for a new reboot, and I'm excited for November and beyond!

The Timeless Child plot-line acts as a continuation of the founding fathers plotline (sometimes known as the Cartmel Masterplan) from the 1980s, which was intended to bring back the mystery of the Doctor that was arguably lost in "The War Games" when they made him a Time-Lord. @@MrRjhyt

Yup... Yup, a good ranking. Russell was consistent, but Moffat's peaks could be stellar. He was being distracted by some other show... Has anyone heard of... I think it was called 'Sherlock'.
Sadly, I've found very little in Chris Chibnall's tenure that holds my attention, or warrants a second viewing. It makes me reticent to give a damning judgement, but it just feels like there's no subtle by-plays to watch for, not much nuance to any of the characters. In Jodie's first season it felt like Graham delivered the most doctory style lines. The other companions were just interchangeable info dumps to prime the viewer for the Doctor's next actions. Nothing seemed to flow.

Not gonna lie, finales have rarely been good. Personally I feel they focus too much on world ending stakes and it has to be bigger than the last.
