Happy Maggot Monday! A huge thanks for all of the supportive comments I've gotten recently. I'll be filming Eyeless today. Not sure how I feel about that. :)
I have to say Craig`s work in this song is really amazing. The atmosphere he created here is very impressive. If you close your eyes you may think you are inside a horror movie.
To me, the thing with IOWA it`s not even the song itself but how it gains a new aspect once you know the story behind it. For exemple some screams you hear in the recording are real screams of pain, because corey was cutting himself with broken glass while recording. And also, some of the things that Corey says during the song (due to his very altered mental state) that were not supposed to be said at first since they are not in the official lyrics of the song ( like you will live forever, its mine, i fucking told you and etc). These things are what makes the song something else entirely to me. Very different from everything i`ve encountered.
@@MusicCatsandCoffee yes a lot of it was on the spot and they just kept the tape rolling and left it all in pretty much. Perhaps the most disturbing ad libbed line, to me, “I can smell you, I can smell you on me” referring to the smell of her dead body that hes been fornicating with, as thats essentially what this entire song is about. However, given all that I see this song as more of an experience, like an only audible movie where you are just listening to someone become a character as you would watch in a movie. So if you close your eyes and just listen and experience it, its perhaps even creepier than watching a movie based on the same thing. Just a really unique thing for a “song” to become.
19:47 fun fact: when Corey was recording this song he was naked, throawing up on himself and cutting himself with broken glass, and in that part he says “DONT LOOK AT ME” cuz clown (one of the band members) was watching him through the control room in the studio
I think for me this song is one of my favorites because it's a level of raw emotion you rarely see in bands now a days. The reason the song lingers on in some parts is because the band was just letting Corey get out whatever he needed to. He stripped down naked and went into the recording booth, he was drunk, angry and just in a state of mind no one should be in. He was cutting himself open with a broken glass and vomiting all over himself from how drunk he was and the pain he was in. Half the screams on that song are actual screams of emotional and physical pain. Corey went into a dark place in his head, that even he said nobody should go to that place in their own mind, but it's what was necessary to get the emotion he needed for the song. There's a part in the song where he screams something like "stop looking at me" in the background, thays because clown was watching him record this and Corey did NOT like being watched at that moment. Sorry for the looong kinda meandering response, but yeah, that's why IOWA is probably one of my favorite songs. It's pure raw emotion captured in a way, that I don't think, that kind of emotion gets captured in anymore. Loved you're reaction and can't wait for the next Maggot Monday. 🤘🤘🤘🤘
There is an even longer version of this song that's like 25 min long. They only played it one time at knotfest 2016 when they performed the complete iowa album live. It's an really messed up performance and they will probably never play the song iowa live again unless they are doing a full album show again. I would definitely recommend watching this performance or the entire concert.
Yes, this song is my favorite; just the ambience, the weirdness, the darkness, it's such an eerie cavalcade of sound that makes the horror lover in me smile
I think the whole song is metaphor on creating this album. They like maniacs took they deepest emotions, cut it from themselves, and created ugly and beautiful at same time monster - "Iowa" album
Maybe I'm offbeat, but I listen to this on the regular. But I listen to this album a ton. I know I say that a bunch in the comments, but I can't overstate how much this album means to me.
I listen to this song at night. Also my favourite song from the Iowa album, and the reason is because when I first listened to it I was in my all-time darkest and lowest point, so it went perfectly with this song and Scissors.
14:55 to answer your question yeah these lyrics are reversed and what’s impressive is when they performed the whole song in 2016 Corey sang the reversed lyrics live himself that was SO cool I almost couldn’t believe he could do that. And it’s best if you hear the story behind this song from the man himself ruclips.net/video/pYGmKkbxKWQ/видео.html . And to answer your other question. Iowa is not my favorite but I listen to it regularly because it’s very comforting I listened to it last night and I fell asleep on it :D
I'm about to become a Mega Maggot, but while that's going on I must say that Iowa and Gematria are in contention to be my favorites. Now I say contention because my list changes every time I open my metal playlist, lol. But the reasoning is because both Gematria and Iowa are technical masterpieces in different ways. Gematria is just an absolute monster of a song, Slipknot never plays it live probably because the effort that goes into it would mean it would be the only song played that night, lol. I hyperbole of course but point remains. Iowa however, is a technical masterpiece because of the layering. As the song progresses, each band member enters the fray one by one until slowly but surely they fade away until it's just you and Corey, as Paul's bass disappears, Corey walks away, and you're left with the aftermath. It's a chilling song with a live 26 minute rendition back in 2016 that is captivating. It's why no matter how many songs I listen to in Slipknot's catalogue, Iowa will always be a contender for my favorite. As far as where DJ Sid and Pinhead 133 are, I believe that Craig is on the right headphone while Starscream and his scratches/mixes are on the left headphone.
This song to me was very therapeutic during a hard break up. I think it’s the baseline of the album that carried me through my grieving. It’s just…. A masterpiece 🤌🏼
The song has barely started, but I wanted to put this out there: it was rumored that this song was done in one take. I don't know how true it is, but if it is, it just makes it that much more special. This album means everything to me.
This is more an experience. I think I have to drink so much and be in kind of a depressed mode to put this on and listen to. I've been through some time that I needed this kind of 'noise' to cheer up a bit (long ago 😀). When I heard this I always thought to myself that there are people with much heavier problems.... Cheers again 🍺🤘
I love this song and listen to it on the regular. It puts me in a trance or something. I think it's a masterpiece musically, it doesn't feel like it's 15 minutes long. The build ups make this song super heavy and it hits me hard everytime. The lyrics reflect on how I am romantically, clingy and obsessive. It's definitely more of an experience than I song that you loose your mind to. I absolutely love the bass and the drums in this song too, Paul and Joey kill it (RIP). Also Corey has said that this song is about being alone with a corpse, so do what you want with that information.🤷🏻♂️
This is one of my favorite Slipknot songs. It’s like a really messed up super dark version of a tool song. It’s an experience. It’s also very cathartic and relaxing.
When I was going through trying to love myself. I played this song everyday and yelled the part "you are mine you will always be mine" everytime cause its what I wanted to feel about my body so I wouldnt treat like shit. And now I've been free of self harm for 4 years. The whole song to be helped gave me the power to love myself finding the evil in me
Lauren, idk if this helps your appreciation of this song but... the image it suggested to me, ever since I first heard it so many years ago - is that of an abandoned, rusted-down amusement park/carnival, during the night, with carousels, swings etc being moved slightly by lone winds, with the echoes of children sounds accompanying the sound of the wind. Arguably one of the most disturbing and creepy settings a song can suggest/paint an image to someone. And no... it's not a song you listen to on a regular basis. It's a motherfucking beast that demands your full attention and takes its toll on you, if you allow it to play with your mind. Atmospherically speaking, this is a goddamn masterpiece coming from The Nine (a prelude to this sort of feeling IMO is on Gently, also from IOWA album), going full horror/serial killer vibe, all the while giving off a strong experimenting/jamming feel to it. All I can say is... they've gone to some really dark corners of their mind to pull this one off.
I feel like listening to that whole album front to back steals something from you, like, physically or some shit but you're ok with it since it's so damn good.
Did u notice in the end the intruments stop playing one by one thats so cool...they did this song in 2016 live and all the members left the stage one by one it was so cool. U need to check that out.
this is my favorite slipknot song. i think there is something very special about it, like its less of a song and more of an art piece if that makes sense? its something that can't be recreated, not even by the band. its a one time thing and i think that gives it a lot of artistic value.
Iowa the track is not something I actively seek out when just listening to a random assortment of music, however when I do a full Iowa album listen (as I am prone to do a few times a year) I do not skip over it.
Yep, I think you got it: it's an experience. I love the Iowa album and listen to it often. However, this is the one song that I tend to skip. It's a fun song to listen to laying down with your eyes closed while you try to catch all the weird sounds and atmosphere, but outside of that it just gets boring to me in a typical listening experience.
I think my favorite part of this video is when you said anti-valentine day! I can’t stand Hallmark Holidays, I don’t need a date on the calendar to tell me how to treat someone! Also, I realized I always watch your videos all the way through yet I skip a lot of others with long intros. Idk if it’s because you’re calm (I know weird relating calm and Slipknot) or because you have a nice voice, maybe both, but you’re definitely my favorite reactor. No, I don’t care for Iowa (song) much either.
I listen to this song a lot, I really like to listen to it when I have enough time. I listen to it once or twice a day. I love the lyrics and the screams are amazing.
It's my favorite song, it's not even the most disturbing song I have on my playlist... Disturbing music is a daily thing for me, because I seek that cathartic experience in order to cleanse myself and free my head from my dark thoughts.
about my opinion of this song, this is something i seek out. I am going through an ungodly amount right now and if my soul had a sound this song would be it, just super dark and full of anger. i just love the pure emotion this song provides bc you cant find much like this.
When I buy a cd, I'll sit and listen to the whole thing, to get a feeling and appreciation for what they're thinking, and why they layed the album the way they did. I listened this the first time, I've skipped it ever since. It reminds me of the trippy hidden song on Tools Sober album. You could probably put Slipknots AOV and If Rain is what you Want on a poll, both those are pretty awesome imo. It was a good reaction, thank you, would of been nicer if it was metabolic, but that's just me.
"When I buy a cd, I'll sit and listen to the whole thing, to get a feeling and appreciation for what they're thinking, and why they layed the album the way they did."
When you hear the genuine pain screams in the background that’s Corey literally slitting his arm with broken glass from in the studio that he head butted broken and he was naked he wanted this song to have that level of emotion in it so yeah those screams are just genuine pain
I have always thought that Slipknot were massively influenced by Korn. The musical style is very similar. I have never heard this before until today and it reminded me of Daddy by Korn!! A tune full of the lead singers emotional release that goes on for an extended period of time. Some find it disturbing, others find it fascinating! Id be interested to see what you make of Korn....
I wouldn't say my favorite song, but I did listen to the whole album when it came out every night before I went to bed for a long time. lol I listened to 'Subliminal Verses' and enjoyed it pretty well, but I kinda fell out of listening to them around that time. Haven't listened to much after that, just a bit here and there. I definitely have a preference for 'Iowa' and their self-titled album. Was very obsessed with them during that period. I believe this album came out when I was in 8th grade. Was listening to self-titled a lot when I was in 6th and 7th. I do really like their atmospheric songs. Was something I'd listen to on headphones when I laid in bed at night just so I could hear all the intricacies. The album itself is my favorite Slipknot album. And this was at a time when Slipknot still was pretty mysterious and I loved that mystery. The period after 'Iowa' is when they all started to do their different side projects more. (Mostly because how taxing 'Iowa' was on the band.) Then the mystery died because it was obvious then what they looked like. Before that, there were only a handful of images floating around and it was mostly speculation. I used to post on a forum about them, but that forum closed down years after 'Iowa'. A lot of us enjoyed the mystery, talking about their music, wondering more about who they were as people, and talking about the masks. Honestly, I think it was the best time to be a fan of Slipknot because of these things.
when you say you like it more than scissors do you mean it as a song in general? or do you think this is creepier than scissors? I think with iowa or scissors, these songs are more about the raw emotion that they are trying to portray, it's not something people would normally listen to unless they are seeking for it. Iowa just out of context is not that great, but when listening to the entire album it really fits well. Thanks for the video! :D
Ooo, good question. I like the sound of it more than Scissors. If I'm remembering correctly, I just wanted Scissors to be over when I was making the video. lol That was more in your face emotion, whereas this is more subdued--at least sound wise. But I 100% agree about the context thing.
How I see it with it being an experience; not just the song but the whole album itself from start to finish. Because it's literally the last song on the album. Kind of what he said at the beginning of the song "Relax it's over." Hmmm whole album reaction? Lol jk
God this tested my mega maggot status to the extreme. Well done to you for sticking with it but there are more amazing songs than this in their arsenal so let's crack on with them.🤘
iowa is on my playlist Just because i like the beat i listen to EDM which is mostly about the beat & rhyme of the song i listen to kavinsky & magic sword the most tho Nightcall from Kavinsky is one of my favorite songs ever
This song reminds me of rob zombies house of 1000 corpses song to me today. Maybe just the long drawn out horror movie vibes. Virus of Life is still the creepier song in my opinion.
im suprised no one has commented this yet or if you found out yourself, and i know this is a late comment, but its about necrophilia! a person falling in love with a girls corpse after they kill her
To me this song it’s just 🤯 When I heard for the first time I was like 13 14 my best friend cousin like blast me with it and I shit on myself when I heard they heavy brutal Corey lol but then when I grow older I listen to it again with knowing how this song actually were made with drunk Corey take over the mic it just something else man I can never hate the rawness of his voice in this song I know it’s dark and creepy but hey just listen to Paul bass line and he’ll get u back to home xD
I like this song, but only when listen to the whole album. Don't know if makes any sense lol But the real question here is WHEN we get to see your anti valentine's day playlist?? I need this asap :D
Imo this won cuz the storys behind the song, what corey did and all that. when I listening to the whole iowa album playlist I listening to this whole song and i like it but this song is overrated imo. Definitely shouldn't have won the poll cuz the other songs are more fits to what you doing the reactions for lyrics and the music.
Defo not one of my faves. Not listened to this for years and now I know why.lol Cut this down to about seven minutes and I'd be a fan. Maybe get me hate but there you go. And at 8.13 you reminded me of Stewie from Family Guy when he's talking to Brian about his novel. Just a little observation of mine.😁
It’s not my absolute favorite of theirs, but it’s in my top 5. This was the song that made me think they were going the progressive route with their following album. It showed Slipknot’s potential. But as we all know they went more commercial.
This was by far the most boring slipknot song ever lol, now I remember why I dont listen to it. Kudos to you for getting thru it. Happy maggot Monday, ready for your next video. If I may suggest a song its called black rose immortal by opeth, if you want a journey go thru that song cheers.

@@MusicCatsandCoffee aah okayy, yea i agree, ive definitely heard Iowa more number of times than scissors :p
Corey cut himself with broken glass while recording this song
I feel called out "only laughs on the inside" 😂
I wish they'd do more songs like this but at least we have Naked City's "Leng Tch'e" which you should check out.
I need clarification. Am I a mega maggot because I stick around for the whole video even though I’m not a maggot? LOL
How I see it with it being an experience; not just the song but the whole album itself from start to finish. Because it's literally the last song on the album. Kind of what he said at the beginning of the song "Relax it's over."
Hmmm whole album reaction? Lol jk
That would literally take me all day. :D
God this tested my mega maggot status to the extreme. Well done to you for sticking with it but there are more amazing songs than this in their arsenal so let's crack on with them.🤘
lol
Anyone want to buy a Ed Gein songbook? I think Corey did. This song might be on page one.
this is 100 percent my fav song by them, either that or new abortion
at the end of the day it's music Plain & simple :)
Laughing corey might be my favorite corey next to angry corey
iowa is on my playlist Just because i like the beat i listen to EDM which is mostly about the beat & rhyme of the song i listen to kavinsky & magic sword the most tho Nightcall from Kavinsky is one of my favorite songs ever
This song reminds me of rob zombies house of 1000 corpses song to me today. Maybe just the long drawn out horror movie vibes.
Virus of Life is still the creepier song in my opinion.
Yep, Virus of Life is the creepiest to me too. By far.
Hello from Iowa
im suprised no one has commented this yet or if you found out yourself, and i know this is a late comment, but its about necrophilia! a person falling in love with a girls corpse after they kill her
My favorite don't know why
To me this song it’s just 🤯
When I heard for the first time I was like 13 14 my best friend cousin like blast me with it and I shit on myself when I heard they heavy brutal Corey lol but then when I grow older I listen to it again with knowing how this song actually were made with drunk Corey take over the mic it just something else man I can never hate the rawness of his voice in this song I know it’s dark and creepy but hey just listen to Paul bass line and he’ll get u back to home xD
How Iowa won over Skin Ticket, is beyond me... lol
I like this song, but only when listen to the whole album. Don't know if makes any sense lol
But the real question here is WHEN we get to see your anti valentine's day playlist?? I need this asap :D
That makes perfect sense. I have a few songs like that. As for my playlist, it's pretty damn good. :D
Fun fact about this song, Corey recorded this song in two takes and he did naked, cut himself and threw up on himself as well
Haven't been up to date with the reactions. She hasn't heard 515 yet has she?
Nope
You should do the Mr Bungle discography after Slipknot
Hey you should check out slaughter to prevails new album kolostom
If you ever feel like doing another long song again, you should do The Decline by NOFX. I'd say it's a goddamn masterpiece.
This is my favorite song.❤️😈
The crying laughing and screaming in the intro is Sid. He recorded himself having a mental breakdown during the recording of the record.
Slipknot went through alot of shit during self titled to ahig but thankfully after that they were fine! For real though thank god
Deftones Kimdracula plz
buen video :)
I support the anti-valentines day list.
Completely agree
Please react to wait and bleed. The clay animation video is the better one.
You evil bastards made her listen to this?
lol
@sindiel taylor cry about it
Defo not one of my faves.
It would be great to see your reactions to "Bullet Train To Iowa" by Puscifer
...Please
The official video is very interesting.
This was by far the most boring slipknot song ever lol, now I remember why I dont listen to it. Kudos to you for getting thru it. Happy maggot Monday, ready for your next video. If I may suggest a song its called black rose immortal by opeth, if you want a journey go thru that song cheers.
This is one of the few that I skip. There's absolutely nothing on this.
