Vol. 3 as a whole is very "relationship" driven, songs like vermilion, the nameless, the virus of life, all kind of covering the spectrum of how ugly it can get. And I think you're right, if I had to guess the "virus" is some kind of analogy to love. This is inside us all, we all have the capacity to be like this, and love is just a symptom of the larger disease. One of my absolute favourites off this record, just the energy is so sadistic and creepy. And what a perfect ramp up in tension on the album, this track is second to last, and right after this ends it goes into danger, keep away. Which really feels like the calm after the storm and is one of the prettiest songs I think they've written
The unsettling guitar creates a very suspenseful mood in the song, is quite amazing. It`s almost a horror movie made in the form of a song. I really liked your video, your analysis are always on point.
It’s amazing to me that so many people misunderstand the meaning of this song, or try to pick up on some “deeper” analogy, and then miss the obvious one. It’s right there in the name lol. The only analogy is the one presented: Life as a virus. The creepy voice stalking the victim is an anthropomorphized caricature of LIFE ITSELF - stalking you to eventually kill you, waiting until you’re vulnerable to really fuck you up, and seeming to take joy in the suffering it causes you. “Empty you and fill you up with me,” as in, life will mold you, shape you how it wants, and try to break you before it kills you. The caricature of life sounds sadistic and rapey, because for the suffering, that’s how life often feels - as if the universe is out to hurt you and thwart you at the worst times and is taking pleasure in it.
The Nameless, this song, and Danger Keep Away are the last 3 songs on the standard edition of Vol. 3. You should check out Danger Keep Away just to see how it transitions out of this one. It's also a pretty chill song.
Happy to see people mentioning the lesser known, but fantastic Slipknot songs. Danger Keep away is just a great tune to belt out in your car on the way home from work.
That sound at the end reminded me FUN FACT COREY vomits before every live show usually inside his mask...or at least he used to. Maybe sober Corey doesnt do it in the mask anymore.
This song always reminded me of Michael Myers from Halloween. Slipknot tends to use metaphors to deal with covetry and obsession. Rather, the inherit desire to control and own, especially when it comes to relationships. You should check out the title track IOWA. It's 15 minutes or so long and is just as creepy but more atmospheric.
I remember the first time I got the cd and was playing it out loud while my brother was playing Fifa in my room, he was jamming to the beat of this song till the vocals came in then immediately turned around in shock and said " J, what the fuck is this crazy shit you're listening to" :D
