There’s a correlation between dub prices and what sounds charge to participate in soundclash events as well as what is expected of the said sounds who take part. You can’t expect the sounds alone to bear the burden of a broken supply chain, the whole chain must feel it down to the consumer.
The 100% dubplate clashes watered down the value of a dub while undermining the power of the 45 and also the failure to usher a new generation of soundman into the clash world (You’re average soundman is about 40)

Chin make very factual points. I think the business element in clash is void. Anyone is free to put a value on their product. Just as the consumer has a right to decline. I say let the old sounds charging an arm and leg rest. The business can not thrive without new creative energy. No new sounds have really bust in the last 15 years. That is why the business stagnant. As much as I love hearing the old sounds. I can say some need to park and just play annual events. A smart promoter would be looking to bring new rivals and younger audience

10 reasons sound clash are dead not in any order
1 the youth do not care it so there very little new attendees
2 there very few youth getting involved with play big sounds or even building sounds and cutting dubs in the 90s in Brooklyn every block had 3 sounds
3 the music sucks and the artist are not talented and creative
4 the artist charge to much , I doubt they giving much free dubs anymore and the artist don't hang out in front of studios any more and you can work something out for a dub.
5 cutting a bag of dubs is a losing investment
6 guys involved in a certain trade would trow money in to a sound to have some sort of clean money but there are better ways now
7 the sound charges the promoters to much
8 there are no new rivals
9 women don't attend clash so no point of going
    10 shit dead lol

Every sound is playing the same dubs. No creativeness in cutting dubs. To be honest, most of the new sounds I hear, are playing these trap beat reggae that has little or no bass line. Gone are the days when you could hear a sound like Kilimanjaro, Jack Ruby, stereo Gav, Black Scorpio,
Stone love etc, Along with some older overseas sound. Played some great dubs.

Forget the avatar, account was for my daughter. Chin make good points from a promoter perspective (little bit from sound perspective as well). I grew up with sound clash and love it from long time. After reading a couple comments, the one that resonates the most is no women in the dancehall. Straight!! A new sound that focus on true entertainment rather than just a cuss the other sound is warrented. Remember world clash '99 when mighty Crown won. Fi dem first round was legendary due to the fact them did just run bare dubs that sound good and ran without much intro. Fi dem energy that day even got women interested in clash events! Hope sey a sound come out like that again..... Also, notice mighty Crown used new tunes and riddims to get the crowd on them side (I don't think dem even have a Garnett Silk dub). Long rant but I think the clash arena needs to broaden their market to encompass more people (especially women). More gal = more man = more people/money for everyone.

I truly believe sponsorship like Gui--ess etc and the rules of no profanity killed it.... just saying, you cannot clash with no violent chat or profanity it becomes boring, especially when the tunes are violent and have profanity it makes no sense
plus the tunes today are not going to win someone a clash, and it's not like u can get foundation dubs from past legends and the new artists can't give u that authentic dub because they aren't hungry or in love with the music enough to make good music that will push the culture and do dubs. This cannot be down to just wanting a high purse alone, I remember when most sounds would do a clash for free just for the love but we all searching for where the love went...

When you have sounds not paying a single cent to download a 45 (single ). But will turn around and pay $1000 for the dubplate and still don't get respect from the artist eventually a breakdown will occur where the sound will want to pass on the excess overspending to the promoter and the sound can't even pull 50 patrons. My solution is if a sound charging $10,000 give them $5000 cash and then $6 - $7000 in tickets for them to pocket and then they will really see it they have drawing power

Ego runs the route...and as such, looking at what one sound makes compared to another sound is always going to be ever-present. Sound systems in jamaica play a dance for 50 - 100 gran , apart from the Stone Love , Bass Odessey , Fire Links etc. when you go to these dances with these top sounds they play a lot of dub plates ! what I think Irish & Chin can do to help bring back clashes , start back the world clash series set a standard price e.g.. We know the elite clash sound so there's a base price then you have other sounds have there price ! to make it clear world clash a Jamaica line up , Bass Odessey , Pink Panther , KILLAMANJARO , Soul Supreme & Rodigan . just an example, now there are 3 elite sounds , Panther a elite selector but not elite sound, as the promoter u set a price ask for their participation , to be honest the culture need this back , and the covid factor !

Everyone has his or her Point. And all are Acknowledge, however in my Opinion one of the biggest contributer for the decline of sound clash is these Microwave Clashes with two much strick rules, soundsplaying some 15, 10 and 5 minutes rounds. Pluss dance with all 10 sounds in it sounds droping out at each rounds and yet sometimes the sounds that drop out early in the rounds are the better sounds that should be at the end for dub fi dub etc. Reggae & Dancehall are Jamaican Culture and Sound Clash is our thing so these rules about not playing any dubs that discriminate any form of gender of society or no bad word tunes etc. are just some rules that help to kill the Clashing Industry... personally I am a clash fan yet weather Clash or Juggling i wanna hear lots of dubplate specials.... not paying my money to hear the very said 45s that are played on the radio everyday in a dance the same way ... Hell No !

    💯 agree
I think to rebuild a reasonable Industry, to leave out those Sounds and Artists that don’t want to be part of.
It’s the same with Dubplates, I voice Dubplates but never ask for certain Artist as there prices don’t fit in my Budget.
If certain Artist not played so what if you still have good dubplates to play 😂
Let’s say promoters and reasonable Sounds build up nice Clashes that entertain people, the Sounds use there creativity to play Artist that like to be voiced and we will see.
I think there are good promoters and reasonable Sounds that could do good clashes that patrons will love.
In the end patrons should get there money worth, promoters should make a profit, of course a Sound should get money for there work and pulling power.
If certain Artists Dubs and some Sounds are not part of it, after a time no one will miss them.
Get back to the Sounds and Artist who want to be part of it and leave the rest.
No need to talk about prices from dubs and Sounds that don’t care

The Jamaican Sounds Were OverCharging And Not Preforming & Underachieving To The Price They Were Charging (Out First Round). Just To Be There And Get A Check!! So I Suggested,, Do A Winner Takes All! A One Cash Prize Of An Amount That was Never Achieved Before By A Sound In Sound Clash!! Were These Sounds Will Invest In Themselves!! Instead Of Using The Promoter’s Money To Voice & Cut!! My Thinking Was You’ll Get Better Performance & Dub Cuttin. At That Time Chin Disagreed That It Will Work Because No Big Sound Will Go For That. Funny Now In Present Time Here In Georgia,,, We Have A Thing Call Put Up Or Shut Up Tournament Were The Sounds Put In A Fee And The Winner Takes All. This Idea Is Different, Fresh & Creative. Respect the Chin for bringing up the conversation but most sound clashes have a tune fi tune, best out of 10, I calculate that to be 20k bills straight away especially if you buy custom dubs.
It’s more factors that come into the discussion, if a sound is gonna touch a big stage then they’re gonna need at least 500 dubz. Especially how some sounds playing a dub plate special for 30 seconds 😆
Long gone are the days when a sound plays two minutes of a dub plate and wheel up the tune ten times.
Nowadays the promoters have to find new ways to make the money back like pay per view because sounds can’t win a clash and won’t attempt to clash in a big arena if they don’t have custom dubs.
The main point is that if you’re doing it as a full time job, you have to make back your money and pay bills or you’ll be broke very quickly.

And, as you say, and I quote, “ Nowadays the promoters have to find new ways to make the money back like pay per view”. Enough said.

Sound Systems are Artist Also. Why can't they charge like Artist charge for Shows. Prices shouldn't be the same. We would have to look at their worth, not what they think their worth. Still understand they're spending money on Dubs from the advance money for the clash.

Chin… you know what killed sound clash the day every man/woman with a sound system or a laptop started cutting specials & they didn’t just cut different specials but all are cutting the same specials so the artiste lose interest in making a tune that can be bought & sold all the artiste is thinking about how many sounds or D.j’s will buy that special off him so now instead of having a reggae/dancehall chart we have a specials chart & specials can’t be bought by the public so it’s mashing up the whole business.. In my day specials were only played in cup dances & not just specials but new unrealised tunes would be played to which made the dance worth going to & memorable when we went home now it’s just boring it’s just the same ting I’ve even stopped listening to the recordings of dances now because you just know what they are going to play from the first tune played.. & everybody’s bored of it…

First of all let me preface this by saying that I am 52 years old so that's where I'm coming from. I think soundclash is dead because the music they play in the soundclash is old. If you go to a soundclash selectors are playing music from 20 and 30 years ago. Music made in Jamaica nowadays is not recognizable as reggae music. If you take off the voice track with the Jamaican accent what remains is not recognizable as dancehall reggae.
The reasons for this are many
The money streams in music has moved in the digital age and this affected all forms of music. Producers of music have been force to become lean and mean. Back in the day a danehall/reggae song was created by the collaboration of many talented people(years of experience). You had a bassman, a drum man, a melody man, a writer, joe lick shot to do the intro, producer to mix it all down plus the artist. All these roles have been down sized to one guy on his computer in a bassment with no musical background.
I feel like the elders failed to pass on the thing to the guys doing it now. It not that they dont want to make good reggae music, they just dont know how.
Foreigners come to JA to hear our unique art form and all they get is a regurgitated Jamaican copy of the stuff they could have heard at home.

All in All sound clash is a gamble.. you have to have real love for it and not watch or think of money...the payoff will come in the long run. These sound mon just want a quick come up because they don't want to work...

You need to go back to the old style when the money goes to the winner of the clash. No pay to just show up. $10,000 to the winner $5,000 to the loser and the rest goes to the promotion. You can’t pay the bigger sounds just for appearance because there is nothing left for the other sound and promoters. If the big dogs don’t want to agree to these terms, then go back home and let your dubs collect dust and your sound will fade away. Time for reset to happen and let the next generation step up and start clash. Let the legends retire. Europe had many new sounds it’s time for the US and Jamaica to introduce new talent likewise. Just my opinion. But makes sense. If they don’t want to cooperate then move on without them. Fresh slate. New sounds. New war.

hello, i wanted to comment on ig but doesn't work, with all respect you are wrong saying dubplate price going up doesn't explain sound booking fees going up - i am not super old in the business but remembering the early 2000s when you could have a lot of living legend for 150 per song and now it's the price for unknown artists and most of those living legends has gone up to 250-300. You expect (as a promoter) a big show, and most of the clashs now are dubplate only so you know sounds will have to draw many thousand dollars throughout the show, so they are asking money accordingly - why would a sound would ask 1k for a show if he have to invest 50-100k on one dance cutting top artists or/and customs for the show ?! if you would promote/organise a clash which requires less funds (45 clash, freestyle dance, or whatever) the sounds would ask LESS money, and it wouldn't be less entertaining, that's it! sounds are asking more because artists getting money, promoters getting money, and sounds only spend money
