When you have sounds not paying a single cent to download a 45 (single ). But will turn around and pay $1000 for the dubplate and still don't get respect from the artist eventually a breakdown will occur where the sound will want to pass on the excess overspending to the promoter and the sound can't even pull 50 patrons. My solution is if a sound charging $10,000 give them $5000 cash and then $6 - $7000 in tickets for them to pocket and then they will really see it they have drawing power

At the end of the day, whether spoken or unspoken, soundclash, from an owner's standpoint has rarely ever been about business. Ego runs the route...and as such, looking at what one sound makes compared to another sound is always going to be ever-present. But if we look at Chin's perspective, regardless of whether you agree or disagree, what stance did you expect him to take?
He's a promoter to each is own he's speaking of keeping the sound clash arena alive but hin still must remember say majority of these people who own system dont just take it for a sport to them is a business that dont come with any pension
Sound systems in jamaica play a dance for 50 - 100 gran , apart from the Stone Love , Bass Odessey , Fire Links etc. when you go to these dances with these top sounds they play a lot of dub plates ! what I think Irish & Chin can do to help bring back clashes , start back the world clash series set a standard price e.g.. We know the elite clash sound so there's a base price then you have other sounds have there price ! to make it clear world clash a Jamaica line up , Bass Odessey , Pink Panther , KILLAMANJARO , Soul Supreme & Rodigan . just an example, now there are 3 elite sounds , Panther a elite selector but not elite sound, as the promoter u set a price ask for their participation , to be honest the culture need this back , and the covid factor !
Everyone has his or her Point. And all are Acknowledge, however in my Opinion one of the biggest contributer for the decline of sound clash is these Microwave Clashes with two much strick rules, soundsplaying some 15, 10 and 5 minutes rounds. Pluss dance with all 10 sounds in it sounds droping out at each rounds and yet sometimes the sounds that drop out early in the rounds are the better sounds that should be at the end for dub fi dub etc. Reggae & Dancehall are Jamaican Culture and Sound Clash is our thing so these rules about not playing any dubs that discriminate any form of gender of society or no bad word tunes etc. are just some rules that help to kill the Clashing Industry... personally I am a clash fan yet weather Clash or Juggling i wanna hear lots of dubplate specials.... not paying my money to hear the very said 45s that are played on the radio everyday in a dance the same way ... Hell No !
💯 agree I think to rebuild a reasonable Industry, to leave out those Sounds and Artists that don’t want to be part of. It’s the same with Dubplates, I voice Dubplates but never ask for certain Artist as there prices don’t fit in my Budget. If certain Artist not played so what if you still have good dubplates to play 😂 Let’s say promoters and reasonable Sounds build up nice Clashes that entertain people, the Sounds use there creativity to play Artist that like to be voiced and we will see. I think there are good promoters and reasonable Sounds that could do good clashes that patrons will love. In the end patrons should get there money worth, promoters should make a profit, of course a Sound should get money for there work and pulling power. If certain Artists Dubs and some Sounds are not part of it, after a time no one will miss them. Get back to the Sounds and Artist who want to be part of it and leave the rest. No need to talk about prices from dubs and Sounds that don’t care
I agree with everything you say and it’s not subjective it is fact - no other industry in 2022 operates with this each to their own cowboy system. It’s not practical or functional or rational or logical.
The whole clash culture is responsible for what’s happening now. Dub price reflect what a sound charge. If you put blame on a sound you must put blame the artist them. Drugs mon sound don’t exist anymore
I BELIEVE EVERY SOUND WANTS TO PROTECT THEIR BRAND AND WANT TO CHARGE A LOT OF MONEY TO THE PROMOTERS, TO CLASH. REMEMBER, WHEN YOU LOOSE A CLASH ITS HARD TO BUILD BACK YOUR REPUTATION.
The dub prices talk is rubbish, they’ll clash in Jamaica for 80,000jmd with the same subs that they want 20,000usd for. And the clash in Jamaica will pull more crowd than the clash overseas. A the same sound man dem kill the clash culture.
Chin big up my brother I agree with what you're saying you said something that makes a lot of sense if I'm charging 10 grand and only get that once a year and another man charge 2 Grand and make that twelve months out of the year he is ahead of the game just saying
Chin & I Had This Convo A Long Time Ago,,, At The Heights Of The World Clash Arena. The Jamaican Sounds Were OverCharging And Not Preforming & Underachieving To The Price They Were Charging (Out First Round). Just To Be There And Get A Check!! So I Suggested,, Do A Winner Takes All! A One Cash Prize Of An Amount That was Never Achieved Before By A Sound In Sound Clash!! Were These Sounds Will Invest In Themselves!! Instead Of Using The Promoter’s Money To Voice & Cut!! My Thinking Was You’ll Get Better Performance & Dub Cuttin. At That Time Chin Disagreed That It Will Work Because No Big Sound Will Go For That. Funny Now In Present Time Here In Georgia,,, We Have A Thing Call Put Up Or Shut Up Tournament Were The Sounds Put In A Fee And The Winner Takes All. This Idea Is Different, Fresh & Creative. But Respect To Irish & Chin Because In Spite Of The Financial Fight They Got As Promoters,,, They Found A Way To Make Classic Memorable Sound Clash Events!!!
100%. that and social media. The not so big secret is that if ya frightened fe clash just charge silly number. Nuff of dem scared. If there aren't budget clashes there won't be a scene for the big clash dem to draw from but they want to claim "Soundman" they don't want to actually be one.
No creativity. No rivalries No exclusives Sounds hid behind the legacy, when real talk the new selectors / mc’s nah have no clash name. Artist charging a different money for certain songs No youth aka no new talent (they dont care about clash) Out pricing themselves. And the same sounds will go do boom clash These sounds spend untold money on dubs every week on their own, and then want to charge the promoter. They want to try and recoup money in one clash. And they bring no fans. Beat it.
Last post kinda all over the place. Haffi simplify it. 1. Promoter job is to make money, sound job is to win the clash, I don't hear no one's number one goal is to entertain the people. 2. Not enough women in the clash. Need women to attract men, more people = more money. No idea how to change it (who am I??) But maybe a change in format?? (Get rid a no playback tune, mek the people boo the sound of them playback as some sound just race through dubs in first round to get rid of tune). Nuh know.
Sorry bro but I disagree, what’s ruined the sound system dancehall scene is the change to juggling/ bashment style. These so called soundman just running their mouth instead of playing music to entertain. The money also ruins things as they’re chasing 💰without entertaining people. Promoters can’t stump up large sums of 💰without no financial gain. Chin’s right about the greed not matching the value to fans & promoters,
Sound system should be rated as per season, there need to be a sound system league with set price depending on where you are on the table of ratings,. for example Ricky Trooper #1 worth $18000 per attendance. Mighty Crown #2 $16000 David Rodigan #3 $14000 Each sound should pay $1000 towards promotion fee to keep public prices real and affordable.
Some of the dubplate cost$$$$, charging 20thou shouldn't be an issue if your sound is established. Sound like mighty crown, soul supreme, matterhorn, panther, addies, etc. If you're a legendary sound for example stonelove charge more.
The "it's just business" is a fuckry argument. I own a sound, and I would rather work once a month for $4,000 than once a year for $20,000. Yes, sound has to make money, but so does the promoter Sounds, artists, and selectors need to wise up. It is not a money tree.
Respect the Chin for bringing up the conversation but most sound clashes have a tune fi tune, best out of 10, I calculate that to be 20k bills straight away especially if you buy custom dubs. It’s more factors that come into the discussion, if a sound is gonna touch a big stage then they’re gonna need at least 500 dubz. Especially how some sounds playing a dub plate special for 30 seconds 😆 Long gone are the days when a sound plays two minutes of a dub plate and wheel up the tune ten times. Nowadays the promoters have to find new ways to make the money back like pay per view because sounds can’t win a clash and won’t attempt to clash in a big arena if they don’t have custom dubs. The main point is that if you’re doing it as a full time job, you have to make back your money and pay bills or you’ll be broke very quickly.
Excellent point! The sound s are now looking at this as a business and charging to play based on their expenses. They have to pay selector, transportation, engineers, just to name a few. There is no way 20k pays for all that. The sounds were loosing money for far too long now. And, now that they have decided to be more business savvy, they are the problem. Wow!!
@@aryakodestudios couldn’t have said it better, I buy dub plate specials for the love of the music but even wouldn’t pay thousands for one dub that another sound can play back without demanding good compensation. It’s down to the promotion to get innovative to make money the money, my job is to play music and entertain.
@@WorldEndMedia When Netflix started they never blamed Block Buster for charging their customers late fees for movie rentals. They rented said movies and told their customers to return it whenever they want. The rest is history. I say that to say this; I truly believe that if we are serious about building an industry that is sustainable, we have to move away from finger pointing and innovate. And, as you say, and I quote, “ Nowadays the promoters have to find new ways to make the money back like pay per view”. Enough said.
@@aryakodestudios Have a listen to a sample of dubz I've got, let me know your thoughts but bare in mind I was just testing levels etc. Sub if you like what you hear. Bless
Sound Systems are Artist Also. Why can't they charge like Artist charge for Shows. Prices shouldn't be the same. We would have to look at their worth, not what they think their worth. Still understand they're spending money on Dubs from the advance money for the clash.
Microwave sound clash rules killed it….when a sound knows they ongle have to play a certain amount of tunes the entire experience is watered down…play til yuh run out…no 45s neida..
Chin… you know what killed sound clash the day every man/woman with a sound system or a laptop started cutting specials & they didn’t just cut different specials but all are cutting the same specials so the artiste lose interest in making a tune that can be bought & sold all the artiste is thinking about how many sounds or D.j’s will buy that special off him so now instead of having a reggae/dancehall chart we have a specials chart & specials can’t be bought by the public so it’s mashing up the whole business.. In my day specials were only played in cup dances & not just specials but new unrealised tunes would be played to which made the dance worth going to & memorable when we went home now it’s just boring it’s just the same ting I’ve even stopped listening to the recordings of dances now because you just know what they are going to play from the first tune played.. & everybody’s bored of it…
Long story short if your running a sound clash and going to sustain the industry the promoter should put a cap on their prices simple change the business model done.
First of all let me preface this by saying that I am 52 years old so that's where I'm coming from. I think soundclash is dead because the music they play in the soundclash is old. If you go to a soundclash selectors are playing music from 20 and 30 years ago. Music made in Jamaica nowadays is not recognizable as reggae music. If you take off the voice track with the Jamaican accent what remains is not recognizable as dancehall reggae. The reasons for this are many The money streams in music has moved in the digital age and this affected all forms of music. Producers of music have been force to become lean and mean. Back in the day a danehall/reggae song was created by the collaboration of many talented people(years of experience). You had a bassman, a drum man, a melody man, a writer, joe lick shot to do the intro, producer to mix it all down plus the artist. All these roles have been down sized to one guy on his computer in a bassment with no musical background. I feel like the elders failed to pass on the thing to the guys doing it now. It not that they dont want to make good reggae music, they just dont know how. Foreigners come to JA to hear our unique art form and all they get is a regurgitated Jamaican copy of the stuff they could have heard at home.
Welcome to the evolution of business. Sound Clash with the current formula has run its course. Time to consider some new formula to propel this great Jamaican tradition back to its highs! "can't keep doing the same thing and expect different results". Sound Clash is a multimillion dollar organization. I'm talking, paid subscription, advertisement, international access to clash, etc...
Chin I think reason why the soundman them, a charge so much, is because of the dubs prices. i think you the promote some 45 only clashes, which will force the entertainers them to stop charge so much for dubs
Nah it's more than that cause a soundmon/soundsystem under change and the dance ram the promoters of the event yam a big food and the soundmon dem left feeling like a robbery got committed on them...and there a lot more to it! All in All sound clash is a gamble.. you have to have real love for it and not watch or think of money...the payoff will come in the long run. These sound mon just want a quick come up because they don't want to work...
Sounds clash is a bygone era,get over it,nothing last forever. Proof:no more 💿 no more vinyl records,no more cassette.times have changed nothing stays the same
Khago forward and seh something like 3 dubs for USD $250 and if u took more dubs from him u get free dub as well, and if I am wrong correct it Dub price too high and it has a domino effect bredda
Lets start with chin. How much him pay the sounds when he had world clash. Gobal clash.. or did the sounds fly themselves in. And pay for all their own expenses. And how much him run away with. $50 door prices
Chin to tell you the truth the sound thing is a business to a lot of people some just used it for hype so if a person can spent 50 to 80 thousands to buy a sound not to mention dubz i think that should be respected so much persons are making so much money from the business so y not sound owners i don't understand
But your forgetting the price of the dubs is real some sounds have more clout than others in terms of dub pricing it is expensive to prepare cant go round it times have changed promoters have to work with it or put up a good cash prize and let the sounds enter on them own
Just change the rules!!!! New soundsystem that don’t have a dub from an artist weh already dead!!! Is qualify, that will level the field!!! If ah soundsystem have a artist dub weh already past are can’t give ah dub it shouldn’t not play!!!If yuh have anymore ideas please give !!!!! You need to go back to the old style when the money goes to the winner of the clash. No pay to just show up. $10,000 to the winner $5,000 to the loser and the rest goes to the promotion. You can’t pay the bigger sounds just for appearance because there is nothing left for the other sound and promoters. If the big dogs don’t want to agree to these terms, then go back home and let your dubs collect dust and your sound will fade away. Time for reset to happen and let the next generation step up and start clash. Let the legends retire. Europe had many new sounds it’s time for the US and Jamaica to introduce new talent likewise. Just my opinion. But makes sense. If they don’t want to cooperate then move on without them. Fresh slate. New sounds. New war.
hello, i wanted to comment on ig but doesn't work, with all respect you are wrong saying dubplate price going up doesn't explain sound booking fees going up - i am not super old in the business but remembering the early 2000s when you could have a lot of living legend for 150 per song and now it's the price for unknown artists and most of those living legends has gone up to 250-300. You expect (as a promoter) a big show, and most of the clashs now are dubplate only so you know sounds will have to draw many thousand dollars throughout the show, so they are asking money accordingly - why would a sound would ask 1k for a show if he have to invest 50-100k on one dance cutting top artists or/and customs for the show ?! if you would promote/organise a clash which requires less funds (45 clash, freestyle dance, or whatever) the sounds would ask LESS money, and it wouldn't be less entertaining, that's it! sounds are asking more because artists getting money, promoters getting money, and sounds only spend money
There’s a correlation between dub prices and what sounds charge to participate in soundclash events as well as what is expected of the said sounds who take part. You can’t expect the sounds alone to bear the burden of a broken supply chain, the whole chain must feel it down to the consumer.

10 reasons sound clash are dead not in any order
1 the youth do not care it so there very little new attendees
2 there very few youth getting involved with play big sounds or even building sounds and cutting dubs in the 90s in Brooklyn every block had 3 sounds
3 the music sucks and the artist are not talented and creative
4 the artist charge to much , I doubt they giving much free dubs anymore and the artist don't hang out in front of studios any more and you can work something out for a dub.
5 cutting a bag of dubs is a losing investment
6 guys involved in a certain trade would trow money in to a sound to have some sort of clean money but there are better ways now
7 the sound charges the promoters to much
8 there are no new rivals

glacklin studios says ...show off kill sound clash and reggae music on a whole ,,,,,,,,one person want to be look up on as a don....I remember back in New York 1987 a dj by the name Puerto-rican John(he looks like a Puerto-rican but he's Jamaican ) beat every sound using bob Marley songs rasta man go a him dance dem....more respect to the world lets all share and spread love
You started them price rises
💯
New Soundclash
3 sounds on stage
$2500 down-payment each.
$5000 to winner
$2500 to runner up
This is how you develop, hungry new talent. The egotistical dinosaur selectors will be benched and wonder why
We need to hear the Dubs more than 3 seconds, it's boring now, we see that in the audience. No fun to be there.. More people rather watch online now.
True dem nuh draw crowd nuh body nuh wah hear dem and prizes are so high. The promoters are trying to give some of them ilight
Hell No !
Yup, for me this is a key reason soundlcash is dying, 30 mins, 15 mins, then dub fi dub, a wha dat fadda!!
💯 agree
I think to rebuild a reasonable Industry, to leave out those Sounds and Artists that don’t want to be part of.
It’s the same with Dubplates, I voice Dubplates but never ask for certain Artist as there prices don’t fit in my Budget.
If certain Artist not played so what if you still have good dubplates to play 😂
Let’s say promoters and reasonable Sounds build up nice Clashes that entertain people, the Sounds use there creativity to play Artist that like to be voiced and we will see.
Sound man, artists and some waste promoter killing sound clash culture
Lol
BADMIND IS THE MAIN KILLER TO THE SOUNDCLASH INDUSTRY APART FROM PRICING .
Badmind gets used too easily
The whole clash culture is responsible for what’s happening now. Dub price reflect what a sound charge. If you put blame on a sound you must put blame the artist them. Drugs mon sound don’t exist anymore
Your on point .... but trust me as a young dj I'd clash for free .. but no clash not keep man them a over price themself
Good show, I never looked at it from that prospective
It's been going that route. Pricing on Sound side and Dub side..
Sorry Chin, you and your homie Irish played a significant role in all this too. Just keeping it real buddy.
Hello Chin, I believe have the solution for all of this - how best to contact you?
However you look at it it senseless for soundman to end up broke In the end
100%. that and social media. The not so big secret is that if ya frightened fe clash just charge silly number. Nuff of dem scared. If there aren't budget clashes there won't be a scene for the big clash dem to draw from but they want to claim "Soundman" they don't want to actually be one.
💯🙌🏾
🇯🇲🇨🇦🇯🇲🇨🇦 in the house clash thing can't done dubs cost a lot just probably got to do some more negotiation promotor and sound man got to come together
Good show enjoy
No creativity.
No rivalries
No exclusives
Sounds hid behind the legacy, when real talk the new selectors / mc’s nah have no clash name.
Artist charging a different money for certain songs
No youth aka no new talent (they dont care about clash)
Out pricing themselves.
And the same sounds will go do boom clash
These sounds spend untold money on dubs every week on their own, and then want to charge the promoter.
Nuh know.
what killed soundclash? simple answer = people/sounds being stuck in the past
Chin’s right about the greed not matching the value to fans & promoters,
Watching from Antigua #268
Sound system should be rated as per season, there need to be a sound system league with set price depending on where you are on the table of ratings,.
for example Ricky Trooper #1 worth $18000 per attendance.
Mighty Crown #2 $16000
David Rodigan #3 $14000
Each sound should pay $1000 towards promotion fee to keep public prices real and affordable.
True word Chin
Some of the dubplate cost$$$$, charging 20thou shouldn't be an issue if your sound is established. Sound like mighty crown, soul supreme, matterhorn, panther, addies, etc.
If you're a legendary sound for example stonelove charge more.
a real talk chin
Once the drug game got fuck up all di big sounds dem park and sound clash era fade out
The "it's just business" is a fuckry argument. I own a sound, and I would rather work once a month for $4,000 than once a year for $20,000. Yes, sound has to make money, but so does the promoter
Sounds, artists, and selectors need to wise up. It is not a money tree.
It's has simple has this, it is all about Pulling Power it you can't generate the fans coming through the door then you can't demand big prices
Especially how some sounds playing a dub plate special for 30 seconds 😆
Long gone are the days when a sound plays two minutes of a dub plate and wheel up the tune ten times.
Facts
I’m glad you know
Microwave sound clash rules killed it….when a sound knows they ongle have to play a certain amount of tunes the entire experience is watered down…play til yuh run out…no 45s neida..
And this dude arguably started the microwave ting...
& everybody’s bored of it…
You personally play a big roll mash up sound clash you and the mighty clown sound
These 3 things killed the industry:
1) dub plate prices
2) Irish and chin
3) artists pushing songs for RUclips not sound system
FACTS!!!!!!
Long story short if your running a sound clash and going to sustain the industry the promoter should put a cap on their prices simple change the business model done.
100% agree.
It’s the same thing why sting is no longer keeping
Sound clash thing water down, only the Jamrock Cruise clash at sea did a gwaan wid a thing until the Covid drop een
The reasons for this are many
The money streams in music has moved in the digital age and this affected all forms of music.
Chin sound cost alot to maintain and pay people to take care of sound
Even if the promoter paid the $20K, why would they make it public for the industry to know.
People talk, things. Sound Systems, owners have friends.
Straight
Chin I think reason why the soundman them, a charge so much, is because of the dubs prices. i think you the promote some 45 only clashes, which will force the entertainers them to stop charge so much for dubs
Most sound systems think promoters like you make big money from the door and online streams so they try to hit you hard.
Proof:no more 💿 no more vinyl records,no more cassette.times have changed nothing stays the same
Khago forward and seh something like 3 dubs for USD $250 and if u took more dubs from him u get free dub as well, and if I am wrong correct it
Dub price too high and it has a domino effect bredda
The sound from wayyyyy out a country you ah talk lol...
and they deserve it for all they've done..
Big sound a big sound .... Country for life.
Lets start with chin. How much him pay the sounds when he had world clash. Gobal clash.. or did the sounds fly themselves in. And pay for all their own expenses. And how much him run away with. $50 door prices
Yeah it's not 2005 anymore
Time to reset and go back to classic juggling...chune a play fe 8 seconds and selector a backspin. Tek it back to basics
1000 for a dub plate figure dat!!!! Plus specials different money dat plus custom
The industry is over!
Chin to tell you the truth the sound thing is a business to a lot of people some just used it for hype so if a person can spent 50 to 80 thousands to buy a sound not to mention dubz i think that should be respected so much persons are making so much money from the business so y not sound owners i don't understand
Why no body complains about American's artist salary, Jamaican's Artist are dying broke. Sometime is wrong.
Next bad artist should not give deals because of favoritism!!! Like he’s from my neighborhood!! If ah soundsystem have a artist dub weh already past are can’t give ah dub it shouldn’t not play!!!If yuh have anymore ideas please give !!!!! I’m already trying to contribute to reach the next generation with the creation of “Songklash” check it out
You need to go back to the old style when the money goes to the winner of the clash. New sounds. New war.
Get $15k $20k then gets 70% less calls from promoter.
Sounds need proper business manager... Your ego will truly fail you. ..
But king! When they have to pay for dubs 1.500 a dub come on king..........
hello, i wanted to comment on ig but doesn't work, with all respect you are wrong saying dubplate price going up doesn't explain sound booking fees going up - i am not super old in the business but remembering the early 2000s when you could have a lot of living legend for 150 per song and now it's the price for unknown artists and most of those living legends has gone up to 250-300.
A covid kill sound clash cause any weh sound clash mi deh deh nuh care if a local sound or big sound
