  • Sound Systems have played a pivotal role in the development of music globally. From hip-hop to punk, grime to garage. Sound Systems are tied up in the story of every music culture.
The impact on musicians, DJs, and punters right here in Ōtautahi has been felt for decades and has furthered the development of music in our city, powered by hard work, passion, and innovation.
Ōtautahi Sound System Culture is a short documentary filmed by RDU 98.5FM that explores the people, history, and construction of Ōtautahi’s rich sound system culture. From the role of the sound system operator to the variety of experiences on the dance floor.
Sound Systems who are showcased in the documentary include Subtle Sound System, Bass Factory Sound System, Eyes Down Sound, Chief Remedy Sound System, Roots Fire Sound, Boom Candy Sound System, Irie Sound, and RDU 98.5FM’s own micro sound system.
The Ōtautahi Sound System Culture Documentary was made with support from The Christchurch City Council and its Virtual Ōtautahi fund, originally set up in 2020 to help produce visual content about communities from our city post COVID-19.

A good representation of Christchurch soundsystem culture as it stands.
I liked that it was briefly touched on about lack of venues, and noise complaints.
That was quite a curve ball but very relevant in the post-EQ environment.

Originally the sound systems played R&B from the states. Coxson used to take trip to the states to buy records.

Is there still a scene like this in Christchurch? I am from Australia and here for the weekend. Attend and organise warehouse parties in my home town so keen to see what it up.

He is corrected by the narrator who saus that in fact it was just a matter of technology that evolved from the 50’s small boxes to big stacks. But who knows about 70s and 80s dances in Kingstown knows that he is not right in saying that.

@@gabrielcalcott6340 you think you slick! I’m talking about speaker box now you talking 8 scoop! Scoop wasn’t the important part of Soundsystem before it became easy with the transistors they focus was on mid-range speaker ,frequency etc and to show they have that skills to build a speaker one needs to have an understanding of electricity. The change for a larger speaker box in the 1950s was ”The House of Joy” speaker end up becoming the standard in those time.

@@gabrielcalcott6340 You said “They make use with what they had” no! They make changes with what they had to something better. They are innovators and inventors don’t look down on them as a no thinker and simple minded ppl.

@@gabrielcalcott6340 I might give a little information, but Documentary! That’s not an easy reach for me! The closest I can get for now to show my appreciation is my Board game “Songklash” that’s base on Soundsystem which I’m planning to relaunch again.
