Heya JB! While I haven't built this kit, it looks awesome. I have already recommended it to a couple of folks that were asking about how to get into this hobby. :) Thanks for everything you do! I'd have had a LOT more difficult time getting into this without your incredibly informative videos.
I'm gonna tell you how good JBs videos are. I've been building long enough that I don't really need to watch. So why was I glued to all (5) videos in this series? Frankly on the off chance I might learn one more nugget - and in this case I realized that I don't add strain relief to my power cables. The second, and most important reason, is that its just fun to hang out with and hear JB explain it in his way. Honestly, I just get inspired with the enthusiasm. Fantastic sign off too!!
I was just going to say (mostly) the same. In my case, the nugget was that yaw works in turtle mode; for 3-ish years, I've used it with pitch and roll, but never thought to push the yaw stick. Knowing that would have potentially made the video that I'm currently rendering mostly obsolete (spoiler: I spent over a week getting a quad out of a tree and had to "invent" a tool to help me do so.) Not sure if turtle mode on yaw would have _necessarily_ helped, but it could have. Now I know for next time 🙂
Would you believe if I said that I almost cried when JB said that little closing message. Really brought out an emotion that I never thought existed. Been in this hobby for over 4 years now and just realised what a game changer has it been in my life, maybe in small and subtle ways but in a way for sure.
JB is legit the saint of FPV. He has so many useful easy to digest videos on pretty much anything. He does it with a smile and adds in mistakes and tips. Truly a great man!
Bought kit, followed tutorial, could barely solder, stripped screws, couldn't flash with the EdgeTX passthrough, decided it needed the Medlin Drone FPV gimbal, followed that video too, got all that CLI code wrong a million times, finally everything is working, I maiden the drone fly for 5 minutes, become disoriented, failsafe, drone crashes, FC is fried, reorder that thing, and rewatch the entire bit about configuring the FC. Finally it's all working again and I've ordered parts to build another drone from scratch because if I crash this one I at least would like to fly another one while I wait for parts. 10/10 would highly recommend! JB's videos are the only reason I even attempted this, I'd have been so lost in the sauce without these as reference, even though my build didn't go exactly like the video it was enough for me to use the right terminology and go looking in the right places to get the results I wanted (minus the bad piloting).
I am about to build a drone, from scratch for the first time. I picked a Lumenier QAV-PRO Micro Whoop. And this series has been very helpful Thanks JB 👏👏
Thank you for all you do for this community! I love your closing thoughts, I think that if I had the whole picture of just how challenging this hobby is before I started, it would have scared me off. However, jumping in not knowing what I was getting into and addressing those issue and challenges one at a time as they kept coming has been so immensely rewarding. I can't wait to build my first 5 inch quad almost half a year after watching 14 minutes of Steele trying to dive a ladder, finding freestyle, and realizing that FPV was more than just DRL and racing.
@9:27 So, just finished my first build in 8 years, brand new O3 unit, followed your instructions, went outside to the side yard to hover test safely, and my quad demanded to immediately go swimming. js, kind of wish I did the test inside. That's my fault though, just bummed. Thank you for everything you do for us Joshua!
Great again as usual. One other thing I do when battery mounting is to insure to position the battery to balance the center of mass so that the weight balance point is aligned with the center of the X frame. A poorly out of balance quad either too front or aft heavy will require those motors to work harder in level flight and such will reduce your maximum speed. The speed will be constrained by the most demanded motor(s) upper limits.
Great series!! I was a beginner 6 months ago, and so many of your vids helped me along the way. Thank you! And congrats to new pilots/quad builders, happy ripping :)
Today, i learned something ! Thank you for the turtle mod lesson. I never managed to work and retrieve a quad without moving myself. Now i just have to wait for buying this quad (and upgrade to digital)
Congrats Pilots 🎓️ gr8 series! much respect for effort put into the vTX & optional DJI controller part(s), TIMELINE must have been a nightmare Nailed it!
Hello Joshua I am having a problem with my xm+ reciever . It wont bind and when i try to flash the reciever the radio says (FW update error Not responding) ?
Good job with the explanation. I have that question asked all the time. I also love you have the same xt60 issues as the rest of us. Wish this build was around when I started.
The new build, using the QAVS frame is head and shoulders better than the first XILO frame and build. This quickly became my favorite frame last year, followed closely by the Moxy (Bubby) from rotor riot. The bubby is indestructible. This frame is a pseudo copy of the apex, which is twice as much. I made a video (bitchy and whiny) about bardwell pushing his first drone package, which really wasn't great, but reluctantly went to his 'ultimate freestyle build' which this ended up copying (sort of) and it was head and shoulders better. I don't agree that the best way to learn to fix your drone is to build your own initially. It is too much for most beginners, but when you do decide to build a drone, this is an excellent option.
Thank you! I have finally finished. I am still scared that the quad will run away, I did watch the video about why the motors will spool up on the bench. So crossing my fingers.
Inspiring and educational! Thank you so much JB! You made it simple for someone who is starting. Just a question: with battery, how much does it weight? Thank you so much!
Thank you for all your work Bardwell! I've been in the hobby for years, but I like build videos so I watched this one. Your words at the end are so true and inspiring. I must agree, a very big congratulations to those who completed their first build! Welcome to the hobby, my friend :) PS I notice this video is unlisted haha. Early views!
Hey JB, the tutorials are great and I am looking to get in to the hobby. is there a FC you would recommend with GPS? looking for a return to home function.
You should be looking at iNav firmware and the FC that support iNav, if you care most about GPS return to home. Betaflight return to home is pretty basic and not as reliable as I would want.
Ummaagrip and 2 straps for sure... I order from rdq so I have a lifetime supply of straps. And I don't think I broke one rdq strap ever.. they do fray eventually though
Hey Joshua, your videos are really helpful and informative for me as a beginner. Thanks for that! I've just started getting into FPV and decided this drone to be my first build since I don't really know about compatibilities with the FC, ESC, motors, etc. and wanted to get to know my first drone inside out in case something goes wrong :D But I've got two questions right now: I bought the Taranis X9 Lite S and wondered if I should go with the XM+ receiver to just get started for now or if I should rather get the ELRS module for the radio and ELRS receiver to have it easier to follow the tutorial and get into things? The second question is if I could change the receiver from the XM+ to the ELRS later or is that not possible? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me ^^
I would like to ask a question, what controllers, goggles and lipo charger would you suggest for somebody that is starting as a beginner and is cheap enough to afford. Thank you
Just one question I just got a few lipo batterys to start fpv but when i plug them into my battery charger there is a pop and little spark Is this bad?
I know it is complicated, but do more of these videos. These are soo goooooooooooood. BTW. I do have an issue with a different build/quad, where it does pop-up in the air with bare minimum throttle position, what could potentially cause this?
I strictly DO NOT buy freestyle frames that do not have some sort of space for the XT60 either through the front or rear of the the top plate. I'm not trying to bash the product Bardwell and this is a GREAT series as always but that's just a pet peeve of mines. I really wish more frame designers took the xt60 lead into account when coming up with designs
@Joshua Bradwell Hi, I’m having trouble with burning up the right rear motor. I was doing initial flight and was able to cover for about 90 seconds but then dropped the throttle to quickly and landed on the back right corner and that sent the motor up in smoke. I ordered two new motors and was just doing some more test flights and made it about 5-7 minutes when I came down and did the exact same thing. Any thoughts? Bit more info, this is my first quad copter away from the DJI Mavic, which practically flies for you lol so it could just be newbie mistakes!
Right my build is done everything looks solid motors are spinning did all the flights test and hover waited a bit longer just in case then the rear left motor just cuts out as im just hovering any thoughts is my motor toast nothing looks like its connected together im at a lost HELP
This is why I dry-fit EVERYTHING before building... that includes planning out how I want to mount the battery/battery leads. More than half my build time is dry-fitting
JB I have an issue, I was doing the hover checks and I have no yaw, pitch or roll when at 0 throttle, once throttle is applied I can yaw pitch and roll. Is there something in beta flight or on my controller (Radiomaster T16S MK1) I should check? In betaflight I can see the receiver responding to inputs but nothing when armed at 0 throttle. Thanks in advance Much appreciated.
Missing an ESC? The amount of available ESCs does not match what the flight controller is reporting. This can have multiple reasons: The ESC was not ready yet. This can for example happen if it is playing a melody. Also a previous flash could have gone wrong and it needs longer to boot up than usual. There are simply not more ESCs connected. The MCU of the ESC is defective. Try a different USB cable - sometimes they are not properly shielded and might result in such errors. Should your radio be turned on, try again after switching it on. Switched on radios have been reported to cause issues with electro-magnetic interference and thus failed reads/writes. If the result is not what you are expecting, try clicking the 'Read Settings' button again.
I've followed the build to the tee, but as I'm doing final tests I notice I can barely walk 5 feet away without the video feed breaking up and my link quality is like 5. I don't understand why.
