- I haven't played this game in ages and I assume neither have you! Let's take a look at the systems Paradox threw against a wall to see if it would stick in 2004 that eventually led to the CK franchise.

CK3 on Steam: store.steampow...
Crusader Kings III is the newest generation of Paradox Development Studio's beloved medieval role-playing grand strategy game. Expand and improve your realm, whether a mighty kingdom or modest county. Use marriage, diplomacy and war to increase your power and prestige in a meticulously detailed map that stretches from Spain to India, Scandinavia to Central Africa.
But uneasy lies the head that wears a crown! Your cunning is your greatest weapon, and intelligence is the key to all successful strategy. Guard your life and the future of your dynasty, because enemies foreign and domestic envy your status. Engage in espionage, join political factions, punish heretics or use assassins to make sure your throne passes safely to the next generation.

It's really funny to see just how limited and board game-like CK1 was, BUT when it released what it was was a hugely new step for strategy games. I hope we're gonna think of CK2 like that one day as well!
Wow. I never played CK1. Amazing to see how far things have come.
Basically feels like an advanced version of Lords of the Realm.
never actually seen any CK1 gameplay - the predecesor of my favourite game
Same for me
Meanwhile, I like the predecessor of CK1-the riveting end to the true Crusades.
Right? I always wondered about it as well... Was not even sure if it really existed. A real eye-opener!
Same here
I've never even seen it mentioned, good or bad. Though I'm late on the whole CKII train, I knew of it for ages.
Everytime I come back home, i watch myelf in the mirror and wonder:
What's my piety ?
5.
You know it's an old game when it has a 4:3 aspect ratio ;)
From 2004
I use a CRT monitor to this day. It can run both 4:3 and 5:4.
I would be really disappointed if I were to boot crusader kings 3 and it forces me to use 16:9.
Or locked to 1280x720 :)
I bought an old new stock crt for this reason.
It only does this for me in the main menu map screen is fine super weird
I would be willing to bet that the popularity of character-based AARs on the Paradox forums was key in informing the company of the players desire for more RP focus when they developed CK2. At one point I think I had read, or at least browsed, all of the CK AARs on the forums prior to CK2 release (EU3 at the time was my favorite game, which CK2 quickly supplanted).
Sidenote: I really wish that they would release an early access demo to CK3 like they did to CK2 (it was locked so that you could only play as Hungary in 1066, and could play as long as you liked in a single session, but couldn't save the game).
@Heberth Ryan Argentina would be even better
@@Kustosz2137 Should have been Australia
@@headsetsquirrel2581 It is called *_New Holland_*
So true! There were so many great AARs for Crusader Kings on the Paradox forums. The gameplay in Crusader Kings 1 was fairly limited at the end of the day, but that just really showcased the creative energies that people tapped into when writing these AARs. Really glad that Paradox didn't play it safe by just sticking to their established larger IPs like HoI or Europa Universalis but decided to lean into what made Crusader Kings distinctive.
Is no one going to mention that the minimap uses an earth tone for water and light blue for land?
That had me so confused for a solid 2 minutes!!
I was always confused when I was playing the game
It's funny, I played this game when it came out years ago. I spent years trying to remember what the name of it was, as it was a fond memory of my first steps into the PC world. Then after playing CK2 for years I finally realized I had played the first one all those years ago. Now I feel a very specific bond for this game haha
The series or the game?
I spent years with this game before I went with CK2... and now I cant wait for the third one. This series is really something else.
Was that when ck2 came out
@@mikeoxsmal8022 yes, I had a serious potato back then, but still enough for CK1
Omg the Same!!!
They should still use the character rings in ck3 since it's iconic, like its only used during succession or something.
I don't think they'll keep it. It would probably be just your character's face.
I know it's iconic but it really doesn't fit the style of ck3. It's a lot sleeker and easier on the eye now
I mean it doesnt have to be an exact copy, the design can be updated to march the theme of ck3. Imagine during succession, your previous dead character is enshrined o a character ring
Another reason i want it there somehow is because whenever I see ck2 memes it almost always feature those character rings
@@jackiecozzie4803 the style of CK3 is modern garbage
@@0rangevlad at least it doesn't hurt the eyes. It's a lot simpler and I don't mind it much. I see why other people don't like it tho. Also *modern
When ireland has more provinces in ck1 then ck3
Really? 😰
Than
Me: 2004 that not that long ago
Brain : its been 16 years
Me: ... oh god
You're old
Here, I'll make you feel better: for me, 1989 was not that long ago. Also, I remember the Fall of Saigon.
I was like DAMN, crusader Kings is as old as me?
@@KnightofAges 1989 was 31 years ago. That's a rather long time I say 😆
I’m younger than CK1, oof
Reading the comments and feeling old 😅
I remember when CK was released, it was brand new, and we were still going to the shop to buy a CD of it, only to realise there are so many bugs that you will have to wait for the release of a patch to download on your super slow connection 😋
I never found the gameplay so different, i am astonished he found more differences than similarities...
Oh and CK was unplayable after a century. Because :
- you had so many provinces and people in your court that you received 10 pop ups a day...
- there were so many characters in the world that the same game was going over 100MB (a bloody text file!!!) and the computer could not cope anymore 😁
Finally! I don't think there were CK1 videos made in years!
I’m impressed with how good the interface is
Still better than March. Of the eagles
I remember we needed to be at peace for culture conversion events to fire back in those days. I have fond memories of this game, thank you for reminding it, OPB.
ah yes, old paradox games who were still driven by passion instead of profit
Those were the good times
Everybody gangsta til your black ghost son scares u
I take history very serious. I couldn't start playing CK3 without first watching this. And I have before this of course watched gameplay of the predecessor to what we watch here: "Svea Rike". I just love the passion in your voice and what you are saying. And you made me remember that feeling of coming home from school looking at games like this and just marvel, haha. The beauty, the intricacy.
The original Crusader Kings? I was just 4 or 5 when it came out! Still, it's very interesting to watch and see how it influenced its successor games. I really like the peace deal thing - hopefully, we can do that (tributes, hostages, marriages, etc.) in the offer peace screen of Crusader Kings 3. Ugh, such a 2000s game - I lol'd at the browser game-like menu! Can relate, what a throwback x
I absolutely loved the county building screen in CK1 it was one of my favourite parts
The minimap was tripping me out so bad. I thought blue was water and the red was land.
it actually looks like america if you think the red is land, but that kinda makes sense cause of continental drift
Brings back so much memories from back when I played this, that and eu2 and from the glory. Loved the song of ice and fire mod
One thing I hope ck3 borrows from ck1 is the whole loyalty vs opinion that ck1 had. I always was irritated how if someone had low opinion in ck2 they were also disloyal whereas life was very rarely that straightforward so I hope ck3 takes loyalty into account
Thanks for showing us this blast from the past.
I remember getting in to CK2 with a very early beta version of the game. Back then assassination, like in CK1, would just be a money dump choice with instant consequence. So much has changed in CK2 since then... Awesome video OPB!
I remember getting this game as a kid in a magazine and i had absolutely no idea how to play this lol
Ah yes, one of my all time favourites, I used to play it for years. Exactly because of the unique concept of playing a character instead of a nation.
It also had some very good mods, like TASS. 😀
Actually, historical research suggests, that the original Mekka was in the Jordan valley. So these older games may be by accident more accurate in a way :)
Makka in Jordan you knew that there also historically say that makka was in the same place
The Count of Eu. I always have a Eu savegame and will again be my first in CK3
I also miss that holdings screen in the upper left corner so much. Watching that empty field slowing turn into a town was so much more satisfying than the way CK2 did it.
Paradox should make an RPG, just for the giggles.
Oh, I remember playing hours and hours in ck :) Also there was a mod that let you play muslims and pagans and it was super fun. I remember a cool campain as slavic wends fighting German and Polish forces and super good one in which I started as jewish count of Itil and migrated to Jerusalem. So much good memories.
I just started playing this one because I didn't have a 64 bit OS, thanks for the demonstration!
Amazing choice about ending the war or keeping it up and gaining zealous traits. Game must be 20 years old and still has more immersion than CK3
My man going back
When they announced the new "Fascination" system for CK3 I had a huge flashback to CK1: Deus Vult, where you did chose a tech to spread faster in your lands.
I think it was a great choice to "step back" to doing that again.
Man, that brings me back. I played the hell out of that game.
Hell, I think I was a Beta Tester for it (though I worked more on Hoi:2 and Vicky 1).
This makes me feel really old.
Second CK1 anything I've seen (watched Flying McGuffin's old Brittany Grand Campaign).
No wonder, i ignored this game then... How foolish i was. CK3 now is one of my favorite game ever!
I remember always playing as Nubia because it was easy to conquer land or kapadochia due to the godly stats on stewardship
What won me over to CK (back even before Deus Vult) was the fact that one didn't have to play a singular entity. You could just be a cog in a larger machine, a vassal, and scheme while having the world evolve below AND above you. I mean, CK was a buggy mess and, taken by itself, I believe it was even considered a failure (and one of the first cases of Paradox working with outside developers not turning out to well - something that would later be repeated with Magna Mundi, East vs. West, and the entire AGEOD acquisition) - but somehow that game kept me busy for hundreds of hours despite its EU2 technical base which had already aged BADLY. There just was nothing like it. And the A Song of Ice and Fire mod (Game of Thrones, the series, was only a rumor back then) was already amazing.
CK1 was this broken, barely playable mess, but if you looked close, you could see there was an incredible game buried deep under the jank.
That game is called CK2. Don't play CK1.
Can we have he grand barvarian games in this game
i actually see this game very nice, i would like to play it
Let the Eugenics begin.
Do you know that there is a submod for HIP that makes you call your vassals to war as allies, named Call to Arms? Even the AI, if you attack, they choose whether to help you or not depending on the relationship, but almost certainly everyone helps if it is a defensive war.
Not many people today will play this game but if it wasn't for CK1, we wouldn't have CK2 and 3.
This was my strong hook into history. :3
Ah CK1. The only Paradox game when you can discover chicken
I usually play with Pentum Scruta in CK2 and when I sometimes play a multiplayer game my eyes hurt from looking at those ugly shields
William 'Funky' de Normandie
I like the cartoony portraits, but man that map hurts my eyes.
I have this game but I can't for the life of me play it again after I started playing ck2
Stable video👍
Don't forget Svea Rike. Never forget
Can anyone help me with my game? I try to turn on CK1, but I only get stuck in menu, with NO options to choose (no new game, no exit game...). What should I do?
Nostalgia OVERLOAD!
It was already hard to look at compared to HOI2 around that time 😁
I have never gotten into CK2 but CK1 is my jam and I love it.
Please play more Ck1
yes
I think difficulty was a good option, it would have been good for CK2
I will never understand why youtubers will start their videos with several minutes of just a static screen.
As cool as it is to see the original, I’d don’t think I’d ever play. If nothing else it serves as a demonstration of how far CK2, and hopefully CK3, has come
What a game
I bought this game in the complete edition by accident thinking it was CK2 :(
I was born 2004
Ah man back in the day, everyone not Muslim and Christian was "Pagan" and you could usurp the Golden Horde for free army spawns XD
I love how you speak so week about a old game. Most people just say "oh, this is horrible!"
My eyes hurt looking at this
Epic :D
can you play byzantine here?
They had better research system here compared to ck2. By far
damn i was 6 my brain is confused
Orange Jerusalem is atrocious
Looks old and still raw compared to CK2 🤔🤔🤔
I'm having flashbacks to Rome AARisen.
Hahaha you are one proud bavarian

My inner 14 year old just went "Niiiiiiiiiice"
5:15 "Mana is [...] essentially a quantification of an abstract concept"
Actually, any games are an abstraction of reality and game mechanics are an abstraction of interaction. I get what you are trying to say, but I wouldn't call all quantifications of things "mana". Prestige is prestige, and Piety is Piety. They are both quantifications of soft power, but they are different to each other just like piety is different to gold. They might sometimes even have similar mechanical uses, but they are not the same and you would not call all numbers "gold" because of that, so why would you generalize with the word "mana"? We don't think you use it negatively, we just think it doesn't fit.
DEUS VULT
Crusader Kings seems vastly inferior to Nobunaga's Ambition, for the PS2. (mechanic wise)
And crusader kings 3 is very disappointing. The diplomacy in the game could be hoh so much more.
this should not even be considered a video game
germans and proud 😂 NEVER!!!!!!!!!!
Ck3 is too cartoony and they made it a lot like euIV, those are my complaints.
The hell is this? lol
I afraid of no Paradox game. But that thing... it scares me.
