It's the umbrella term used on law enforcement to indicate inactive license. Using the other terms us specificity and usually becomes an argumentative situation focused on the method not the outome. When was it revoked? Why was it suspended? What do you mean it's expired? Cancelled or inactive. I prefer the term inactuve.
They always run your plates before they pull you over, now today in 2020 they have a few cop cars that just drives around with a plate reader on the roof and can read up to 3500 plates per hour and if you owe tickets, license are suspended, no insurance, they can pull you over. Just like the parking enforcement in NY, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit and other big cities have plate readers that know that you owe parking tickets and they can put a boot on your car.

Nor is it an abuse of power. Plate readers are used by a lot of cruisers and departments even have cars with multiple reads designed to check plate validity for parked cars. I've seen Staties on the highway behind me then break off when they get a clear report back. I'm not afraid of police because I have nothing that would get me stopped....my actions might, but my car won't. So I'm aware of what I'm doing to avoid my actions being a cause for traffic stop.

You don't need to provide any kind of document or ID card UNLESS you are engaged in an activity that requires it (like driving a car or, in some places, carrying a firearm).

They always run your plates before they pull you over, now today in 2020 they have a few cop cars that just drives around with a plate reader on the roof and can read up to 3500 plates per hour and if you owe tickets, license are suspended, no insurance, they can pull you over. Just like the parking enforcement in NY, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit and other big cities have plate readers that know that you owe parking tickets and they can put a boot on your car.

Even in a stop and ID state, you don't have to hand over any actual documents when lawfully detained. You just have to IDENTIFY YOURSELF. It is sufficient to verbally state your name, date of birth, and current address. That's identifying yourself. And that is sufficient for all stop and ID laws. You don't need to provide any kind of document or ID card UNLESS you are engaged in an activity that requires it (like driving a car or, in some places, carrying a firearm).
