Thank you for this Self-Sabotage eject plan. As a 32 year old Mom to three little girls, I’ve always told them that it’s okay and normal to not be good right away. To equip them with encouraging words about perseverance and self compassion. But I’ve realized I preach this so passionately to them because it has crippled me my entire life. “Paralyzed by Perfectionism” would be the title of my Autobiography. 😂😭
So I’m actually really excited to have an opportunity to expose myself to these ugly parts of myself through the process of learning how to skate. I’ve always wanted to learn how to do the ‘C’ circle spinny move thing since I was a kid, but have never faced that fear of failure long enough to actually try. I’m so glad they are going to get to watch me on this journey to put these things into action. Eventually I’ll get them on wheels too!
Sorry you’re slowly getting my whole life story through random comments, Dirty. 😂I just think this journey is going to be very transformative in my life. ❤️

When I look at your skates gliding around the rink, I feel it. That’s how we use to skate between songs.
My family says they can see that I just want to takeoff skating but those voices in my head tell me, Don’t do it, you’re going to hurt yourself. No confidence in myself now. 😢 Great advice!!👩‍🦳💗 🛼 💗

Change your vibrational energy from low to high(eg fear to reason/love/joy) and you’ll pick up the pace a lot faster! Trust the process! Even with 10 minutes a day with your roller skates will help so much with your confidence and comfort!
For the first time ever I went to a roller skating rink last week and I only had been skating for two months and limited space in the kitchen. Can you believe that I was skating very fast, and without falling for two hours straight?! My friend couldn’t believe how fast I’m learning!
Please don’t beat yourself up! This is a journey, and it will take patience, time, willfulness, passion, love, encouragement, ,confidence and of course lots of falling(duh!) to get to your final destination!
Be the super roller skating star for YOURSELF and nobody else’s! ❤️

For years I have been telling myself I can't skate or skateboard because I don't have balance. I always think about how much I used to hold onto the wall whenever I was at FVSC or ice skating. But of course, now I know that isn't true because I am learning and getting better every day.
Thank you for all of your videos because they have made learning to transition and skate generally a bit easier for me! I was terrified because it seems like falling is soooooo easy. I'm tall so the ground is already far enough away, but on skates it's even further and I am so scared of falling. But after watching a few of your and other peoples' videos, I have been able to transition without falling or grabbing onto something and I am much more comfortable on my skates now!!!
Hope you can re-open soon! I really wanna come skate!!

But positive talk comes from myself as well as fellow skaters! So many people passed me today and told me to keep going and I'm doing great :) it made me realize I should be telling myself this all the time, too!

Thanks dirty Deb! One thing I’ve struggled with with skating is the ability to focus while there’s people around. Maybe I’m ADD idk but I can nail something at home and then in public I struggle with it. Once I relax and realize that just skating itself is a achievement it helps me feel better and I’m able to focus more on what I’m trying to do. So I guess what I’m trying to say is focus on what you can do not what you can’t because you can!!❤️👍🏼

Whenever I try a new thing I repeat a quote from Adventure Time of all things to myself- and this is getting a lot of mental play as I struggle to learn to skate; "Sucking at something is the first step towards being sorta good at something". Applies to everything with few exceptions and just plain keeps me going when my head goes into that 'I suck at this' space. Loved this video, RUclips autoplayed to this just as I was feeling kinda down about my skating so I'll call it kismet! Thank you!

  • @e_lena9656
    @e_lena9656 4 года назад

Sooo true! It's very important to understand that you don't suck at anything while you're just learning it! I remember, when I just tried to returned to rollerblading after about 17 years long break (i did some ice-skating though) I was like "ok, seems like I've lost all my skills, so I probably won't be able to do that again. But I must keep trying for the next 40 minutes because I promised myself 40 minutes long workout! So yeh, I kept forcing myself to skate/blade and 20 minutes later my body remembered what to do, and I realised that I'm not that bad as I believed I was just 10 minutes prior!
I think, it's easy to quit when it hadn't worked as expected at the very beginning. So, giving yourself some time frames when you are not allowed to quit really helps. Sure, it requires some self-discipline in the beginning but later you'll be keep progressing simply because you've became truly enthusiastic about what you're doing.
And another thing that helps me personally in my progress is that I don't force myself into progressing too quickly. I even allow myself to never learn some tricks. It's like "roller skating is a good fitness itself, so, even if I never learn how jump or spin on roller skates/blades it will still be good for my health!" And then I find myself doing all those tricks when I'm ready to! 😁

I'm been skating a while but there are still so many challenges, you will constantly be learning and have challenges, thats what makes skating so fresh every time I skate. Your words are important as to how our responses even in the quite moments when we are reflecting where we are with our skating when there is a skill that we keep trying and trying and still can't get it. When I used to sing solos at events and have to learn a new song, I would tell myself not to get discouraged (I had no right to) until I had practiced the song at least 100 times. Well needless to say I had to song down quite well long before 100 times. I love your words that its n NOT suppose to be easy. I think that's what makes me put on those skates and keep trying because I don't want the challenge of not being able to do it have the last say and win atleast until I have tried the move 100 times ! Thank you for the video !

I've been trying to learn to skate on some inlines. I've been outside twice and I can't manage to go more than a foot before falling. I make zero progress. I have a tendency to do this a LOT--ill pick up a new hobby, not be instantly good at it, and drop it in shame. for some reason, skating has been really helpful in breaking through that for me! I think because when I was younger I was SO sure I'd never be able to skate at all, so whenever I manage a new thing--going from one end of the garage to the other without falling, or stopping smoothly-- it felt like such a huge accomplishment that I didnt feel bad about how far I had to go. I've been trying to bring this attitude into other hobbies, too, especially writing, and this video is so inspiring and just fills me with a drive to go out and practice!

A lot of ppl who are good skaters have been skating, training, practicing for years. Ppl need to be realistic about skating (as well as other sports, activities, etc.). It is okay to be a beginner. Well said. You don't step out on the floor or ice and do an axel. In fact, not everyone will do an axel. And that is okay. The fear factor gets worse as you get older. I have had 2 serious skating accidents. But in 45+ years of skating, I have only fallen 2 more times than I have gotten up!

Great video! I’ve been skating in some form for over 30 years and this talk is still relevant to me. My opinion: I think many people at the beginning of their skate journey (or any endeavor) speak down of themselves because they see how well everyone else around them are doing and don’t think about how long those people have been practicing or working at it. I know I’ve had those thoughts. Seeing people at the rink glide by effortlessly can feel intimidating. Even though people aren’t judging you, you “sense” that they are simply because it’s a feeling of not looking like the others and sticking out. Also, could it be a form of ego protection? I know I’ve said I’ve sucked at something at the beginning of trying it because I wanted to beat someone saying it to me (although no one has ever said anything negative to me when I’m trying something new!) If I say I’m awful at something before someone else does it’ll lessen the blow if they do say it (and again no one ever has!) I love, love, love to encourage new skaters and if I see them excel quickly past my abilities, I keep encouraging. This is how you support your community. Fantastic DDH! I’ve been a fan of you for years and hope to skate with you some day!

I just came out of the skating rink telling myself the exact thoughts you mentioned. It definitely made me tear up to watch this! This is exactly the reminder I needed I’m excited to keep learning as a beginner and watch myself grow ❤️ Thanks for the video Deb

Hello Deborah, good night. Thanks for the sympathy, not sending Deborah's smiles, but in the filing I don't know where your smiles that I received and saw will stop. I will try to find them again. It's already 10 pm. One good night.
