Good job. I just hatched my first ever quails. A lady had 7 eggsand I bought those. So the only thing I did wrong was only leave the last 2 eggs another day. I may have thrown out one egg that felt heavy. Oh dear. But , we live and learn. 5 out of 7 ain't to bad.

I have just witnessed a fantastic phenomenon. I had a quail chick that was born with deformed legs. I was sure he was gone. Being that my incubator is DIY it is at the same time a brooder and incubator, It can support 100 of them for the first two weeks. I made it tall so that quails can not easily mess with electronics. Anyway, on day 3 the chick with a deformed leg learned how to fly and was flying constantly to get its food and water or to go wherever he wanted. Believe it or not, he is now either fixed his leg or has managed to escape captivity :D I see no more chicks with deformed legs. So, it turned out that the height of the brooder may not be needed for standard chicks, but it sure helps those with deformed legs survive.

I see you just have the standard egg turner. I recently got the quail rails and I will say I love them. I now incubate 100 eggs or more at a time. I love raising quail more than chickens because they seem more hardy. The grow so fast and taste so damn good!!

Great video, we just our Coturnix Quail last Friday, and the guy gave us about a dozen of eggs at no extra cost. My husband decided to eat most of them, before I could tell him I wanted to test the incubator before we waste time collecting 48 eggs, then possibly have something go wrong. I have 3 left, and put them in the incubator last night. Temp holds well, but the humidity goes all over the place. Just a few drops of water will make it rise from 40% to 60%. Right now it is still sitting around 50-60%.

I find that if I set it up about 3 or 4 days before I start incubating eggs it tends to level out a little. Actually 50 to 60% is about right though so sounds like things are going good. A friend found some eggs that looked like the ones u incubated. She asked me if I wanted to take them and put them in my incubator. Well I said yes and only one of the 7 eggs hatched. It was a red and yellow quail chick. I fell in love with him/her and named it happy feet. Lol I just ordered some cuternix quail eggs of rare colors so he can have friends. By the way your chicks are so cute!
aweseome. Congrats on getting one to hatch. Just a word of caution though, it is probably illegal to keep that bird (not that anyone is going to charge you or arrest you). It is generally illegal to keep wildlife without a permit. Good luck with your new hatch though, I am sure it will go well.

They both work good, I have a still air incubator And that’s worked really well for me. But a circulating air incubator is better because it makes it so the temperature is the same throughout the whole incubator. If it’s still air one side might be hotter then the other or have a higher humidity level then the other
Hello, please may you help me. I made homemade incubators using styrofoam boxes, I would need to open the lid to turn my quail eggs. I would need to turn about 300 eggs. How much time would I need to spend doing this without the temp fluctuating too much? Or would the temp fluctuation not been an issue too much?
it shouldn't be a big deal as long as you work fairly quickly. If you are overly concerned with it you can just prop up one side of the incubator a little and then switch to the other side. Do that a few times a day and you are basically turning the eggs without opening the incubator. I hope that helps.

I live in South Florida and would enjoy raising a few quail. My biggest problem is doing something with them after they are grown. After feeding them and watching them grow, I am not going to butcher them. I know quail are native to Florida. I would probably just take them out and let them go in an area where I know quail already exist. Do you know if quail raised on a porch and hand fed could adapt and survive to a wildlife environment?
Letting them go is a bad idea. These are not the same as the native quail in your area. Coturnix are domesticated quail...more like chickens than quail. It is highly unlikely that they would survive more than a few hours in the wild and if they did Florida sure doesn't need another invasive species. :) You can probably find someone that would be happy to take them. Just post it on Craigslist and I am sure you would have no problem finding new "homes" for them. You really only need to keep around hens and no roosters if you just want the companionship and the eggs. You would have to buy new hens every 2 years probably but you wouldn't have to worry about culling birds that way either. Just some thoughts.
Ok good suggestion, I certainly do not want to send pets I have raised off to die in the wilderness nor do I want to release a non native species into the everglades. I did not know these were a different kind of quail. Speaking of Florida quail though, I recall when I was a teen I would stay with my cousin that lives in the country. Every morning I would be awakened with the sound of whistling, almost like a teenage boy whistling at a hot chick. It was loud. Will I have to deal with that when the chicks become mature? I am ok with it, but doubt my neighbors in the condo below would appreciate the wake up each day.
I have got used to the climate in Thailand And at the moment it feels quite cool So I put my first 15 eggs in a cool box for most of the first day But then When I bought a temp gauge It was just about double the required temp So I lowered the temp to the right setting But are the eggs worth incubating
Living in Thailand I did realise how hot it was The first day of savings eggs to incubate I put the eggs in a cool box But didn't realize the temp Till I bought a temp gauge and the storage temperature was just over double recommend So I cooled it down to the correct temp But are the eggs after one day at high temperatures ok or not Cheers Mark
I had my incubators in the garage while it was extremely hot outdoors. Seems like the eggs just rotted in the heat but the incubators never registered over 99 degrees. When I looked inside several eggs exploded. Any ideas on a remedy? Thanks

Most of the videos I have watched so far spend more time telling about building their brooder and less time about care and well fare of the chicks.

I find most videos are more about showing off what you can do than teaching and often make things sound so much more complex than they are so I am trying to fill that niche a little. For example, I am trying to learn to use my grandmother's old sewing machine but every how to sewing video is so complex that it doesn't cover the basics. I need to start with threading the bobbin not with how to do some crazy complex stitch. I already have an old 3 hole cage that my poultry lady gave me. It would be perfect for them. And since I also raise chickens I always have feeders and waters around. I just need birds and know what to feed when. Like chickens get starter for 8 weeks then grower for so long. Do I feed the adult game bird feed all the time or is there a starter in that as well
I feed a Game Bird Starter crumble to all my birds, even the newly hatched birds and they do great. It is high protein somewhere around 28% I believe. Hope that helps.
having a hard time sorceing game bird starter around here. even with 4 feed stores in town some have a basic game bird feed but the actual starter is expensive
you can probably get away with basic game bird feed. if they are not laying well you may need to find a higher protein food. You might also look for things like turkey or chicken starter and just get the one that has the highest protein. I hope that helps.
I have a question. I'm incubating eggs for the first time. Quail shipped eggs. Today is day 12 of the incubation and i candled the eggs and took away the ones that lighted up like a bulb. I did the autopsy on those and I could see most of them died in like day 5-6. That's the same day I did the first ovoscopy. I did it only on a few eggs, no more than 5-6. And I was relatively quick opening the incubator and picking the egg. I opened it once for each egg. The thing is, I am feeling terrible thinking I kill those poor chicks by opening the incubator to see what was going on in the eggs, if anything was noticeable already. I saw in many videos people doing this and it didn't seem such as a big deal to open the incubator that many times. Do you think it was such a big deal opening the incubator as for killing like ~10 eggs out of 41? Or could it have just been anything else?
do you know a company online i can buy quail at but not 50+ birds i dont need that many i am new to this and i have 6 birds from someone but there hard to find and ive had them 3 days and non have laying yet but ther 4 months old
I don't have personal experience with ordering birds or eggs online but I have heard good things about James Marie Farms (www.jamesmariefarms.com/purchasing-pricing.html). If you are looking for birds locally check craigslist and local poultry swaps. As far as your birds not laying yet, be patient. It generally takes at least a week or two after a move before they start picking back up their egg laying routine. Also make sure they have plenty of light (14 hours a day). I hope that helps.

this was good and simple....we just tried quail in the incubator for the first time but only 1 hatched out 7 I believe...but our temp was probably not always constant and even didn't hatch till what we thought was day 22 or 23 I think on the calendar...our incubator is less reliable but same brand as yours. but more basic and our temp in the room was too up and down...but my only question is do you use the same egg turner for quail and chick?
it sounds like the temperature was the issue for sure. I do use the same egg turner. I did invest in some quail rails for it but i have used the chicken rails before and they worked fine.
I just set up my new incubator up and need to know what to do when your temp alarm goes off also what to do when the humidity alarm goes off. I thought this may make a good topic for a new vid. Regards John.

It's a WQ48 Chinese brand. I was getting low temp and humidity alarms constantly. I found a vid by Mark at selfsufficentme that led me to insulate the incubator which has solved my problem. I do think a vid on incubator setup, alarms, operation, maintainence, cleaning ect. Would be a great resource for those of us that watch your Chanel. Regards John.

hi Chris.. another way to keep your humidity up there.. is to cut up a sponge and place in the wells.. or tear up a cotton T shirt into strips and add them... then add your water =0) just saying =)
Greetings sir. I just came across your videos as I was searching on how to hatch eggs. I must say your videos are very educative. I just started the process of hatching by placing the eggs in the hatching machine. But my problem comes as I try to set the temp and humidity....the machine can allow me to set to my desired temp (99.5) but then the temp reading still shows 38 or 37, I was thinking that after I set my temp to the desired it will then show 99.5 on the temp reader but it's not. For humidity iys not allowing me to even set it to my desired. What could be the problem for this to happen?
hi Chris...just wondering...I got one Chinese button painted quail that just hatched (2 days early) and I have 8 more to go. my question is, how much time can he/she stay in the incubator after drying? I don't want to hurt the other eggs by opening up the incubator so I am constantly checking to see pips but I don't see any so I assume the one I have is just an early hatcher. thank you for any help you can offer. I have considered it but haven't found a good deal on one yet. I also have found that just setting them on the counter or in a small cooler works just fine most of the time so not really a big need for it. Good suggestion though.
I have been getting an abundance of eggs lately and have decided to try to sell some. Most people are wanting eggs to incubate. I am in Arkansas and it's pretty cold right now, maybe 30-60 degrees in the day. I'm not able to gather eggs until the evening everyday. I'm wondering if the eggs will still be viable after sitting in a cold hutch all day? Thanks. Love your channel.
Those temps are pushing it on whether or not the eggs will hatch. it will almost definitely affect the hatch rate though. Really any temp below 40 is too cold. I like to keep them above 50 myself. If business is good enough you might consider moving a breeding set into an indoor cage. if you have about 10 hens and two roosters inside (garage or something) you could get about 60 eggs together to sell or incubate each week. Just know that when you move them they will stop laying for a week or two. I hope that helps.

Oh no, I am so sorry about that. No, don't adjust the temp. It should remain at 99.5 (or 101 if using a still air incubator) the entire time. Just bump the humidity up a little to 65 or 70% at lockdown. Good luck with your hatch.
Honestly, there isn't a ton of difference between the styrofoam incubators. Farm Innovations and Little Giant are probably the most common and both of them will work just fine. If you can get a Hovabator, they get very good reviews. I don't have experience with the smaller incubators so i can't speak to those.

Picking up my first quail batch tomorrow to put into my incubator. I tested the incubator first with chicken eggs first a month before to make sure the temp stayed stable. I will be picking up 4 doz quail eggs 🥚

Hi! Love your channel. I'm rewatching old videos cause I'm finally hatching my own. Question most have hatched. I still have a few that are trying but not getting very far. Its day 19 should I help them or just keep waiting? This is torcher.
It is always difficult to make that decision. It is usually best to let them try and hatch on their own. But sometimes they just won't do that. You can try to help them out if they have been going for more than 24 hours and still haven't made it out of the egg. Just be aware that they don't usually make it at that point. They are usually week to begin with and that is what is causing them to not hatch in the first place. Good luck with them.
I wash it out with soap and water real well. I do sometimes use a weak bleach solution on it and then make sure to rinse it well. If it isn't overly dirty, just soap and water and air dry works.
Hello Cris I need your help! I had a Quail egg brake in My incubator and it was taken out that day but the mess was in there for 2days I cleaned it out last night And it still smells it's a air force incubator so I added some vanilla essence in the water when I filled the tray Lock down is in 10 days do you think the eggs will still hatch.
They will probably still be ok. it may affect your hatch rate a little but I doubt it will keep all of them from hatching. There really isn't much you can do about it at this point anyway so just hope for the best.
I don't have a hydrometer. If I kept a dish of water in there with them would that be enough to ensure they get humidity, or could that give them too much humidity?
it depends on a lot of things. How much humidity you have in your climate, how much surface are is in the bowl. Unfortunately, without a way to measure the humidity there is no way to know for sure. It will probably be fine but if I were you I would pick up a hydrometer. They are cheap and easy to use.
Hey Chris, I live in Louisiana, and the humidity is always high out here. I'm going to be raising coturnixso and bobwhites, Have you ever heard of dry incubate, then add water on lock down? I have a huge incubator and with no water in it, it runs 37% humidity. what do you think?
I have heard of it and known people that swear by it. I think you are onto something with living in Louisiana. Especially in the summer time I would think the humidity would be naturally pretty high. To be honest, I add water but i don't pay much attention to humidity prior to lockdown.
hi cris I bought a hovabator non digital the temperature turns off at 101 f and comes back on at 98.2 if I adjust it any lower it gets in the 97 f range is this acceptable they sent another digital thermostat because I didn't trust the one that came with kit there is a 2degree difference so I used my inkbird thermostat control to see which one was correct so one is close to inkbird should I be concerned wish I bought a digital model thanks

I haven't figured out how to fix it but I forgot to tell you that the eggs hatching doesn't actually occur until about 12:00 minutes in. At the 9:49 mark i am just showing how I prepare the brooder box and get it warmed up a few days before they hatch. I am still working on fixing the issue though and figuring out what occurred. I have the original video and it plays fine.
Love all of your videos. I’ve learned many things from them. I have a quick question though, my humidity percentage was lower so I added water in. When I checked it again the percentage was a little lower, I had the bottom water trays nearly filled up with water but the humidity wouldn’t rise. I took out half of the water a little while later and the humidity rose to 65 and 70. What do you think the problem is and how should I go about correcting it? Thanks in advance!
That is strange. Makes me think that there may have been a problem with the humidity guage. Sometimes when you add water it takes a while for it to register though. It takes a while for the air to absorb the water and raise the humidity. I think I would just fill the trays up (only a few them are needed probably) and not worry about it too much myself.
Okay thanks. That’s what I’ve done is just used past experience and field 2-3 trays to keep it around 50% for now and just fill every one of them up for lockdown. I was just getting really frustrated because I didn’t want a whole batch of eggs to be ruined lol.
@@Slightlyrednecked It's the surface area that increases the humidity Not the depth of the water Some wet sponges with warm water and have the bottom in the water trough Or to quickly raise the humidity spray water on the sides of the incubator But that only lasts a few hours

I just ordered about 120 eggs off eBay and they have been shipping for about five days. do you know how long quail eggs can last in the mail for? This was a great video and was very helpful.
+Nicole and Max I don't have any experience with shipping eggs but I generally go by a rule of eggs are viable for about 7 days if stored properly. Good luck and let me know how it works out if you would.
Don't stress about it too much. I use a cooler and just put one of those freezer packs in it (not directly touching the eggs of course). I don't know the exact temp but it keeps it slightly cooler than outside and it works fine.
well you can pretty much figure about 2 square inches per bird to start with but by the time they are about 2 weeks old they need about 4 square inches per bird. Of course, more room is better if you can do it. Hope that helps.
I've watched this video so many times! I tried hatching bobwhites and was unsuccessful. This morning I got coturnix quail eggs and I am so scared that I'll fail again! The waiting will kill me lol
I a brooder is where the chicks go when they leave the incubator. It is basically just a large box with a heat source to keep them warm until they feather out. I use a large Rubbermaid container with a heat lamp. As far as add ons, the only one I can think of right off hand is an egg turner. hope that helps clear it up a little.

It is definitely ok to turn the eggs from the first day. In fact you should turn them. I like to wait about 24 hours to let the eggs settle before I incubate but I am sure they will do fine if you started incubating within four hours. Good luck on your hatch.
So I don't know if this is the incubators fault but my humidity is always around 47-49 and sometimes 50 or 51. I fill in 3 channels and it still is around 47-49?
Strange. I am assuming you live in a dry part of the country. Remember that humidity is surface area not volume of water so you need to get more surface area. You can cut out part of the foam between the channels to make it a bigger (wider) channel or you can try to add some soaked sponges but they will need to be replaced often. Don't stress too much about it really. I have been experimenting with dry hatching and I am not sure how much humidity actually affects the hatch. At best I think it needs to be raised at lock down but before that doesn't seem to make a huge impact.
Slightly Rednecked I live in Portland Oregon... and it's pretty rainy when it's not summer but it's summer now so I don't know what to say.a few days ago I did try the sponge thing and it still stayed the same humidity, maybe it's broken?
sounds like it. As long as there is water in the trays i don't think I would worry about it too much. if you have a lot of problems with chicks piping but not making it out of the shell then I would look at it harder. I hope it works out well.
my new hovabator still air incubator is turned all the way up but the temp on the bottom rack with the eggs wont get any higher then 94 and the room is over 70. its hatch day and nothing not even a pip
Oh no, I am so sorry to hear that. It sounds like there is a defect in your incubator to me. I would suggest that you try to contact the company and see what support they can give you.

That is a very tough question to answer. it depends on where you get them from if you are ordering them or getting them from a local breeder. They go for about $4 American dollars per dozen (12) eggs. I am not real current on incubator prices right now but you should be able to check on Amazon for them. I hope that helps.
Chris, I'm trying to hone my skills at hatching eggs and hopefully get a better hatch rate. Today is day 10 and I noticed a couple eggs that had fracture lines across the middle. also, a weird smell, maybe the smell from the eggs, I tossed them out. Also I increased the temp this time around to 37.6c hoping a little extra heat might assure hatching around day 17-18. Last time I got about 3 or 4 chicks out of 12 eggs. I think, about day 21-22 on the last hatch, I gave up on those eggs that didn't hatch. Also I'm thinking, I let some of my eggs sit around, in the quail coop for 3-4 days before going to the incubator, is that possibly something that would affect the hatch rate?
If you haven't already, get a couple of calibrated non digital thermometers and double check the thermostat reading on your incubator. Long hatch rates is generally a sign of low temp but you really want to be sure before just raising the temperature. Letting them lay around for a few days could definitely affect it, especially if the temperature outside is over 75 degrees. They could start incubating early and then die before really getting going. Hope that helps.
Hi! Do you reccomend Quail as pet? We had 2 chicks we were raising for eggs and as pets, but a predator got em. Are the quail more friendly if you handle them from day one and hatch them out yourself? Also, theres a channel named a chick called albert that keeps a single quail indoors and takes them out ocassionally and the quail seems fairly healthy and friendly. Do you think that is possible? it is definitely possible. I have seen some quail that were very tame and would even ride on peoples shoulders. if you want to put the time into it they can be made into very good pets.
I don't know that I would do that. They are probably full of bacteria at that point and I would worry about it making my dog sick. But honestly I am not sure.
My temp is hovering from 91-100 but constantly staying in that range humidity is at 30-55% I'm at day ten will this affect my eggs I turn them 3 times a day. And have been scince the beginning.
It depends on how much it is fluctuating. 91 is very low but if it is just happening when you are opening the incubator to turn the eggs and then it levels back out you are probably fine. If those swings are constantly going on it may very well affect your hatch rate. Not much you can do now but just wait and see how they do. I hope you have a great hatch.
I don't remember how many hatched (it was a long time ago). I typically get about an 80 to 90% hatch rate though. I think the incubator was about $100.
The egg turner i have will hold about 100 eggs. I think the incubator cost about $100. It is a Little Giant Forced Air Incubator. I hope that helps to answer your questions.

I have just witnessed a fantastic phenomenon. I had a quail chick that was born with deformed legs. I was sure he was gone. Being that my incubator is DIY it is at the same time a brooder and incubator, It can support 100 of them for the first two weeks. I made it tall so that quails can not easily mess with electronics. Anyway, on day 3 the chick with a deformed leg learned how to fly and was flying constantly to get its food and water or to go wherever he wanted. Believe it or not, he is now either fixed his leg or has managed to escape captivity :D I see no more chicks with deformed legs. So, it turned out that the height of the brooder may not be needed for standard chicks, but it sure helps those with deformed legs survive.
I bought 6 quail and they laid 4to5 eggs a day i waited till i hade 50 eggs
Then put them in the incubator i hatched 40 eggs

We have 2 incubators w/quail egg turners. 1 is a backup. It’s been hard finding incubators at stores this year as I think so many have decided to do more homesteading to be more self sufficient with their own food this summer
Stores stopped carrying them when the demand dropped about 30 years ago. Even then they weren't a heavily stocked item.

I see you just have the standard egg turner. I recently got the quail rails and I will say I love them. I now incubate 100 eggs or more at a time. I love raising quail more than chickens because they seem more hardy. The grow so fast and taste so damn good!!

Great video, we just our Coturnix Quail last Friday, and the guy gave us about a dozen of eggs at no extra cost. My husband decided to eat most of them, before I could tell him I wanted to test the incubator before we waste time collecting 48 eggs, then possibly have something go wrong. I have 3 left, and put them in the incubator last night. Temp holds well, but the humidity goes all over the place. Just a few drops of water will make it rise from 40% to 60%. Right now it is still sitting around 50-60%.

I have similar issues with humidity as well. I find that if I set it up about 3 or 4 days before I start incubating eggs it tends to level out a little. A friend found some eggs that looked like the ones u incubated. She asked me if I wanted to take them and put them in my incubator. Well I said yes and only one of the 7 eggs hatched. It was a red and yellow quail chick. I fell in love with him/her and named it happy feet. Lol I just ordered some cuternix quail eggs of rare colors so he can have friends. By the way your chicks are so cute!
aweseome. Congrats on getting one to hatch. Just a word of caution though, it is probably illegal to keep that bird (not that anyone is going to charge you or arrest you). It is generally illegal to keep wildlife without a permit. Good luck with your new hatch though, I am sure it will go well.

Hi red, would you recommend a still air incubator or a circulating air?
They both work good, I have a still air incubator And that’s worked really well for me. But a circulating air incubator is better because it makes it so the temperature is the same throughout the whole incubator. If it’s still air one side might be hotter then the other or have a higher humidity level then the other

Hello, please may you help me. I made homemade incubators using styrofoam boxes, I would need to open the lid to turn my quail eggs. I would need to turn about 300 eggs. How much time would I need to spend doing this without the temp fluctuating too much? Or would the temp fluctuation not been an issue too much?
it shouldn't be a big deal as long as you work fairly quickly. If you are overly concerned with it you can just prop up one side of the incubator a little and then switch to the other side. Do that a few times a day and you are basically turning the eggs without opening the incubator. I hope that helps.

I live in South Florida and would enjoy raising a few quail. My biggest problem is doing something with them after they are grown. After feeding them and watching them grow, I am not going to butcher them. I know quail are native to Florida. I would probably just take them out and let them go in an area where I know quail already exist. Do you know if quail raised on a porch and hand fed could adapt and survive to a wildlife environment?
Letting them go is a bad idea. These are not the same as the native quail in your area. Coturnix are domesticated quail...more like chickens than quail. It is highly unlikely that they would survive more than a few hours in the wild and if they did Florida sure doesn't need another invasive species. :) You can probably find someone that would be happy to take them. Just post it on Craigslist and I am sure you would have no problem finding new "homes" for them. You really only need to keep around hens and no roosters if you just want the companionship and the eggs. You would have to buy new hens every 2 years probably but you wouldn't have to worry about culling birds that way either. Just some thoughts.
Ok good suggestion, I certainly do not want to send pets I have raised off to die in the wilderness nor do I want to release a non native species into the everglades. I did not know these were a different kind of quail. Speaking of Florida quail though, I recall when I was a teen I would stay with my cousin that lives in the country. Every morning I would be awakened with the sound of whistling, almost like a teenage boy whistling at a hot chick. It was loud. Will I have to deal with that when the chicks become mature? I am ok with it, but doubt my neighbors in the condo below would appreciate the wake up each day.

How long do they need the heat lamp for and will a heat plate work
I have got used to the climate in Thailand And at the moment it feels quite cool So I put my first 15 eggs in a cool box for most of the first day But then When I bought a temp gauge It was just about double the required temp So I lowered the temp to the right setting But are the eggs worth incubating
Living in Thailand I did realise how hot it was The first day of savings eggs to incubate I put the eggs in a cool box But didn't realize the temp Till I bought a temp gauge and the storage temperature was just over double recommend So I cooled it down to the correct temp But are the eggs after one day at high temperatures ok or not Cheers Mark

I had my incubators in the garage while it was extremely hot outdoors. Seems like the eggs just rotted in the heat but the incubators never registered over 99 degrees. When I looked inside several eggs exploded. Any ideas on a remedy? Thanks

I find most videos are more about showing off what you can do than teaching and often make things sound so much more complex than they are so I am trying to fill that niche a little. For example, I am trying to learn to use my grandmother's old sewing machine but every how to sewing video is so complex that it doesn't cover the basics. I need to start with threading the bobbin not with how to do some crazy complex stitch.

I already have an old 3 hole cage that my poultry lady gave me. It would be perfect for them. And since I also raise chickens I always have feeders and waters around. I just need birds and know what to feed when.

I feed a Game Bird Starter crumble to all my birds, even the newly hatched birds and they do great. It is high protein somewhere around 28% I believe. Hope that helps.

some have a basic game bird feed but the actual starter is expensive
you can probably get away with basic game bird feed. if they are not laying well you may need to find a higher protein food. You might also look for things like turkey or chicken starter and just get the one that has the highest protein. I hope that helps.
I have a question. I'm incubating eggs for the first time. Quail shipped eggs. Today is day 12 of the incubation and i candled the eggs and took away the ones that lighted up like a bulb. I did the autopsy on those and I could see most of them died in like day 5-6. That's the same day I did the first ovoscopy. I did it only on a few eggs, no more than 5-6. And I was relatively quick opening the incubator and picking the egg. I opened it once for each egg. The thing is, I am feeling terrible thinking I kill those poor chicks by opening the incubator to see what was going on in the eggs, if anything was noticeable already. I saw in many videos people doing this and it didn't seem such as a big deal to open the incubator that many times. Do you think it was such a big deal opening the incubator as for killing like ~10 eggs out of 41? Or could it have just been anything else?
do you know a company online i can buy quail at but not 50+ birds i dont need that many i am new to this and i have 6 birds from someone but there hard to find and ive had them 3 days and non have laying yet but ther 4 months old
I don't have personal experience with ordering birds or eggs online but I have heard good things about James Marie Farms (www.jamesmariefarms.com/purchasing-pricing.html).
If you are looking for birds locally check craigslist and local poultry swaps.
As far as your birds not laying yet, be patient. It generally takes at least a week or two after a move before they start picking back up their egg laying routine. Also make sure they have plenty of light (14 hours a day). I hope that helps.

this was good and simple....we just tried quail in the incubator for the first time but only 1 hatched out 7 I believe...but our temp was probably not always constant and even didn't hatch till what we thought was day 22 or 23 I think on the calendar...our incubator is less reliable but same brand as yours. but more basic and our temp in the room was too up and down...but my only question is do you use the same egg turner for quail and chick?
it sounds like the temperature was the issue for sure. I do use the same egg turner. I did invest in some quail rails for it but i have used the chicken rails before and they worked fine.
I just set up my new incubator up and need to know what to do when your temp alarm goes off also what to do when the humidity alarm goes off. I thought this may make a good topic for a new vid. Regards John.

It's a WQ48 Chinese brand. I was getting low temp and humidity alarms constantly. I found a vid by Mark at selfsufficentme that led me to insulate the incubator which has solved my problem. I do think a vid on incubator setup, alarms, operation, maintainence, cleaning ect. Would be a great resource for those of us that watch your Chanel. Regards John.

Greetings sir. I just came across your videos as I was searching on how to hatch eggs. I must say your videos are very educative. I just started the process of hatching by placing the eggs in the hatching machine. But my problem comes as I try to set the temp and humidity....the machine can allow me to set to my desired temp (99.5) but then the temp reading still shows 38 or 37, I was thinking that after I set my temp to the desired it will then show 99.5 on the temp reader but it's not. For humidity iys not allowing me to even set it to my desired. What could be the problem for this to happen?

hi Chris...just wondering...I got one Chinese button painted quail that just hatched (2 days early) and I have 8 more to go. my question is, how much time can he/she stay in the incubator after drying? Have you thought about a wine fridge? They usually have an adjustable digital thermostat and 55 degrees is the perfect temp for wine.
I have considered it but haven't found a good deal on one yet. I also have found that just setting them on the counter or in a small cooler works just fine most of the time so not really a big need for it. Good suggestion though.
I have been getting an abundance of eggs lately and have decided to try to sell some. Most people are wanting eggs to incubate. I am in Arkansas and it's pretty cold right now, maybe 30-60 degrees in the day. I'm not able to gather eggs until the evening everyday. I'm wondering if the eggs will still be viable after sitting in a cold hutch all day? Thanks. Love your channel.
Those temps are pushing it on whether or not the eggs will hatch. it will almost definitely affect the hatch rate though. Really any temp below 40 is too cold. I like to keep them above 50 myself. If business is good enough you might consider moving a breeding set into an indoor cage. if you have about 10 hens and two roosters inside (garage or something) you could get about 60 eggs together to sell or incubate each week. Just know that when you move them they will stop laying for a week or two. I hope that helps.

Oh no, I am so sorry about that. No, don't adjust the temp. It should remain at 99.5 (or 101 if using a still air incubator) the entire time. Just bump the humidity up a little to 65 or 70% at lockdown. Good luck with your hatch.
I really want to hatch some quail eggs but I don’t know which incubator would work the best... I wouldn’t get a very big one.
Honestly, there isn't a ton of difference between the styrofoam incubators. Farm Innovations and Little Giant are probably the most common and both of them will work just fine. If you can get a Hovabator, they get very good reviews. I don't have experience with the smaller incubators so i can't speak to those.

Hi! Love your channel. I'm rewatching old videos cause I'm finally hatching my own. Question most have hatched. I still have a few that are trying but not getting very far. Its day 19 should I help them or just keep waiting? This is torcher.
It is always difficult to make that decision. It is usually best to let them try and hatch on their own. But sometimes they just won't do that. You can try to help them out if they have been going for more than 24 hours and still haven't made it out of the egg. Just be aware that they don't usually make it at that point. They are usually week to begin with and that is what is causing them to not hatch in the first place. Good luck with them.

What do you sanitize the incubator with before the next incubation?
I wash it out with soap and water real well. I do sometimes use a weak bleach solution on it and then make sure to rinse it well. If it isn't overly dirty, just soap and water and air dry works.
Hello Cris I need your help! I had a Quail egg brake in My incubator and it was taken out that day but the mess was in there for 2days I cleaned it out last night And it still smells it's a air force incubator so I added some vanilla essence in the water when I filled the tray Lock down is in 10 days do you think the eggs will still hatch.
They will probably still be ok. it may affect your hatch rate a little but I doubt it will keep all of them from hatching. There really isn't much you can do about it at this point anyway so just hope for the best.
I don't have a hydrometer. If I kept a dish of water in there with them would that be enough to ensure they get humidity, or could that give them too much humidity?
it depends on a lot of things. How much humidity you have in your climate, how much surface are is in the bowl. Unfortunately, without a way to measure the humidity there is no way to know for sure. It will probably be fine but if I were you I would pick up a hydrometer. They are cheap and easy to use.

Hey Chris, I live in Louisiana, and the humidity is always high out here. I'm going to be raising coturnixso and bobwhites, Have you ever heard of dry incubate, then add water on lock down? I have a huge incubator and with no water in it, it runs 37% humidity. what do you think?
I have heard of it and known people that swear by it. I think you are onto something with living in Louisiana. Especially in the summer time I would think the humidity would be naturally pretty high. To be honest, I add water but i don't pay much attention to humidity prior to lockdown.
hi cris I bought a hovabator non digital the temperature turns off at 101 f and comes back on at 98.2 if I adjust it any lower it gets in the 97 f range is this acceptable they sent another digital thermostat because I didn't trust the one that came with kit there is a 2degree difference so I used my inkbird thermostat control to see which one was correct so one is close to inkbird should I be concerned wish I bought a digital model thanks
I don't think I would be overly concerned with it. It is probably just reading more accurately than a digital one would.

I haven't figured out how to fix it but I forgot to tell you that the eggs hatching doesn't actually occur until about 12:00 minutes in. At the 9:49 mark i am just showing how I prepare the brooder box and get it warmed up a few days before they hatch. I am still working on fixing the issue though and figuring out what occurred. I have the original video and it plays fine.

Love all of your videos. I’ve learned many things from them. I have a quick question though, my humidity percentage was lower so I added water in. When I checked it again the percentage was a little lower, I had the bottom water trays nearly filled up with water but the humidity wouldn’t rise. I took out half of the water a little while later and the humidity rose to 65 and 70. What do you think the problem is and how should I go about correcting it? Thanks in advance!
That is strange. Makes me think that there may have been a problem with the humidity guage. Sometimes when you add water it takes a while for it to register though. It takes a while for the air to absorb the water and raise the humidity. I think I would just fill the trays up (only a few them are needed probably) and not worry about it too much myself.
Okay thanks. That’s what I’ve done is just used past experience and field 2-3 trays to keep it around 50% for now and just fill every one of them up for lockdown. I was just getting really frustrated because I didn’t want a whole batch of eggs to be ruined lol.
@@Slightlyrednecked It's the surface area that increases the humidity Not the depth of the water Some wet sponges with warm water and have the bottom in the water trough Or to quickly raise the humidity spray water on the sides of the incubator But that only lasts a few hours

I believe they hatch a little later than coturnix, I think they hatch out at 20 to 21 days so lock down would be day 17 or 18. Hope that helps.

no. That should be fine. Just be quick when you do it and stop turning at lock down.
I just ordered about 120 eggs off eBay and they have been shipping for about five days. do you know how long quail eggs can last in the mail for? This was a great video and was very helpful.

180 degrees seems like a pretty extreme angle but as long as they stay in the turner and don't fall out it is fine.
My fridge is around 43 degrees and outside temperature is about 73, those temperatures don't seem ideal . what do you suggest
Don't stress about it too much. I use a cooler and just put one of those freezer packs in it (not directly touching the eggs of course). I don't know the exact temp but it keeps it slightly cooler than outside and it works fine.

How large should the brooder box be--is there a square inch per chick guidline?
well you can pretty much figure about 2 square inches per bird to start with but by the time they are about 2 weeks old they need about 4 square inches per bird. Of course, more room is better if you can do it. Hope that helps.

I've watched this video so many times! I tried hatching bobwhites and was unsuccessful. This morning I got coturnix quail eggs and I am so scared that I'll fail again! The waiting will kill me lol
Well I have lots of questions... Firstly what is a brooder? Also what are add ons to an incubator?
I a brooder is where the chicks go when they leave the incubator. It is basically just a large box with a heat source to keep them warm until they feather out. I use a large Rubbermaid container with a heat lamp. As far as add ons, the only one I can think of right off hand is an egg turner. hope that helps clear it up a little.

It is definitely ok to turn the eggs from the first day. In fact you should turn them. I like to wait about 24 hours to let the eggs settle before I incubate but I am sure they will do fine if you started incubating within four hours. Good luck on your hatch.
So I don't know if this is the incubators fault but my humidity is always around 47-49 and sometimes 50 or 51. I fill in 3 channels and it still is around 47-49?
Strange. I am assuming you live in a dry part of the country. Remember that humidity is surface area not volume of water so you need to get more surface area. You can cut out part of the foam between the channels to make it a bigger (wider) channel or you can try to add some soaked sponges but they will need to be replaced often. Don't stress too much about it really. I have been experimenting with dry hatching and I am not sure how much humidity actually affects the hatch. At best I think it needs to be raised at lock down but before that doesn't seem to make a huge impact.
Slightly Rednecked I live in Portland Oregon... and it's pretty rainy when it's not summer but it's summer now so I don't know what to say.a few days ago I did try the sponge thing and it still stayed the same humidity, maybe it's broken?
sounds like it. As long as there is water in the trays i don't think I would worry about it too much. if you have a lot of problems with chicks piping but not making it out of the shell then I would look at it harder. I hope it works out well.

my new hovabator still air incubator is turned all the way up but the temp on the bottom rack with the eggs wont get any higher then 94 and the room is over 70. its hatch day and nothing not even a pip
Oh no, I am so sorry to hear that. It sounds like there is a defect in your incubator to me. I would suggest that you try to contact the company and see what support they can give you.

Yes. Set the eggs next to the incubator and let them rest for 24 hours before incubating. Hope that helps.

That is a very tough question to answer. it depends on where you get them from if you are ordering them or getting them from a local breeder. They go for about $4 American dollars per dozen (12) eggs. I am not real current on incubator prices right now but you should be able to check on Amazon for them. I hope that helps.

It shouldn't affect the eggs as long as you are fairly quick about it.

Chris, I'm trying to hone my skills at hatching eggs and hopefully get a better hatch rate.
Today is day 10 and I noticed a couple eggs that had fracture lines across the middle.
also, a weird smell, maybe the smell from the eggs, I tossed them out. Also I increased the temp this time around to 37.6c hoping a little extra heat might assure hatching around
day 17-18. Last time I got about 3 or 4 chicks out of 12 eggs. I think, about day 21-22
on the last hatch, I gave up on those eggs that didn't hatch.
Also I'm thinking, I let some of my eggs sit around, in the quail coop for 3-4 days before going to the incubator, is that possibly something that would affect the hatch rate?
If you haven't already, get a couple of calibrated non digital thermometers and double check the thermostat reading on your incubator. Long hatch rates is generally a sign of low temp but you really want to be sure before just raising the temperature. Letting them lay around for a few days could definitely affect it, especially if the temperature outside is over 75 degrees. They could start incubating early and then die before really getting going. Hope that helps.

I don't do anything to the water, just use regular tap water. If you wanted to use bottled water it wouldn't hurt but not necessary.
Hi! Do you reccomend Quail as pet?
We had 2 chicks we were raising for eggs and as pets, but a predator got em. Are the quail more friendly if you handle them from day one and hatch them out yourself? Also, theres a channel named a chick called albert that keeps a single quail indoors and takes them out ocassionally and the quail seems fairly healthy and friendly. Do you think that is possible?

it is definitely possible. I have seen some quail that were very tame and would even ride on peoples shoulders. if you want to put the time into it they can be made into very good pets.
Can the unhatched semi developed chicks be fed to dogs as part of a raw diet?
I don't know that I would do that. They are probably full of bacteria at that point and I would worry about it making my dog sick. But honestly I am not sure.

Sure. You don't have to save them up, you can incubate them right away if you just want to incubate a few eggs.
My temp is hovering from 91-100 but constantly staying in that range humidity is at 30-55% I'm at day ten will this affect my eggs I turn them 3 times a day. And have been scince the beginning.
It depends on how much it is fluctuating. 91 is very low but if it is just happening when you are opening the incubator to turn the eggs and then it levels back out you are probably fine. If those swings are constantly going on it may very well affect your hatch rate. Not much you can do now but just wait and see how they do. I hope you have a great hatch.

You don't have to be quite that precise but I would go into lockdown on the 16th.

You shouldn't "wash" them. Wipe off any debris but avoid actually scrubbing them with water.

I don't remember how many hatched (it was a long time ago). I typically get about an 80 to 90% hatch rate though. I think the incubator was about $100.
