Your quail videos were my motivation to start raising quail in Virginia, USA. I have 20 three plus week old quail and they are doing great. Have 30 eggs arriving tomorrow and can't wait to see them hatch.
Hey mate, I raise quail and chickens and I noticed your cardboard. As a rule you never put chicks, quail or chickens on slick surfaces. This can cause sprawled leg in your chicks. When their legs sprawled you usually have to cull them. I use a rough shelf liner that helps them to grip the surface when they move about. Learned that the hard way myself. You should never put new born chicks on a slick surface. Just food for thought. My wife loves your channel as I. Have a good day mate!
Not sure what you mean by a rough shelf liner. I’m trying to think of a cheap disposable alternative to slippery cardboard. Maybe corrugated cardboard with one layer torn/peeled off.
Thanks for this video Mark. I've done 2 rounds of hatching quail, with a bit of success, but didn't know if what I was doing was correct. Seeing what you do has really helped. Only a recent subscriber in the UK, but I'm glued to your channel.
Thank you for subscribing! I'm glad the video has helped out - like I said in the intro, sometimes I like creating "doing videos" instead of scripted "how-tos" because often they're helpful in other ways such as showing different methods or unintentional tips that otherwise would be missed. Cheers :)
I bought some eggs but only one quail hatched. We felt bad for it so we bought it a mansion. Not too long after we bought some more eggs so it could get a friend. They are currently incubating. Hope they hatch!!
This is glorious, been searching for "quail backyard chickens" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Eeyila Rudimentary Expediency - (do a search on google ) ? I'm hoping tat I take care of them well. They r so tiny n lovable😍❤️. Wish me luck guys❤️
I have really enjoyed you and your videos. I first came in for the gardening and have found that you have created content for many of the endeavors that I am doing. Thank you.
I love to see you put them on wire so soon! I've had several hatches and can't stand the stink in my set up. I'm going to try something similar to what you do next time. Thank you. I really learn so much from watching your channel (all the way from South Texas USA)
Have you tried mixing charcoal into the floor bedding? It helps reduce the smell. Also having isopods (such as Porcellio laevis, or Porcellio scaber) helps break down the waste.
I have 2 questions: 1) How long will they stay in the brooder? When and where do they go next? and 2) What would you do if you found a baby chick with a deformity or one that is not doing well? Incidentally, I really enjoyed watching this video; it's an eye-opener, so interesting. Thank you.
First rate video. I questioned the cardboard walls at first, but it seems to work and if you trash it between batches you can guarantee you're not carrying over parasites or germs from batch to batch. Keep sharing.
I like the. Cardboard pieces for the biddies to go to keep off any breeze.. i have used cloth, paper ttowels and large shavings myself to do the same... do you find the biddies have problems walking on the slick surface ? Have used a cardboard box for the first week or 2 with paler towel and shavings, then just compost the box and move the biddies into a bigger clean area with hardware cloth like urs. Tried .25 inch but found thr droppings would clog the mesh. Have you considered using 2 temp controllers to add more precision to the heating element. Let each control one side of the element to make the full power a narrower window. Make half power just before the desired temp and full power under the temp..... or use the 2nd controller to bring in outside air once it crosses a bit over the temp setting. I have found they hatch faster if its on the high side of the temp window
I have a similar ceramic heat lamp. Set up with a temperature controller which turns it on & off within a high/low range. Nice setup with the mesh to allow manure to drop through floor and the cardboard sections for them to walk on. I’ve found my chicken chicks will walk on anything not hanging above floor level, and scatter feed out of containers if they have a chance.
Hi. Great video. I’m trying my first hatch but I’m having terrible trouble keeping humidity at 55% . It is swinging from 40% to 70%. I’m on the Fraser Coast. Any ideas on how to reduce humidity?
Thanks for the video sir. Very informative and I also really enjoyed seeing the tiny baby chicks! Just had one question. Is the wire for their flooring not a possible risk for hurting their feet?
I put down cardboard or newspaper for a few days until my chicks feet grow big enough that they don't fall through the holes. After that I remove the paper and the wire is fine for their feet.
Just a quick question... I have never seen that type of incubator before. How many layers of eggs are in there? They look pretty well piled up. How do the eggs on the bottom hatch? I would think the ones on the bottom would have trouble fighting their way to the top of the pile after hatching. Love all your vids, learning alot. I had some quail last summer, and was hatching some out. Unfortunately I lost my last female to a snake. I am just now looking into ordering some eggs from Amazon. It's winter here, and I know the eggs will get a chill during shipping, but I have had success incubating refrigerated chicken eggs in the past. I hope it works out well with the quail. Wish me luck with the hatch rate.

great video :) I also save the feed at the bottom of bags for chicks. Its almost all powder and small bits down there anyways and my big birds dont really prefer the powder at all so waste not want not
Standard pet food stores probably wouldn't know much about it. Try finding a "produce stockfeed" store and if they don't have it they usually can order it in. If you are still having problems let me know :)
What do you do if you get a quail chick with a deformation or something else is wrong with it? I'm curious because I hope to have some quail eggs soon and these will be my first quails ever.

Soo cute, mum and would love to have chickens and or quails but we have cats and there’s a lot wondering cats in the suburban area we live in (and well we don’t have a place for them to live safely atm) but we do like them
I know this is old and you may not see this, but as someone who considers off grid life, I'm wondering how they kept chickens and birds incubated without electricity. Why don't the birds incubate their own eggs? It seems so unnatural. Forgive my ignorance. I'm debating whether I should raise quail or rabbits for a SHTF scenario here in Illinois (US) and I'm learning about what is necessary to raise each.
I'm new to learning as well, but I know chickens will get broody and hatch their own eggs the majority of the time, whereas quail are rather uninclined to do so in a captive situation. Some people say they have had their quail go broody when given more space, but they are rather ditzy birds and lay on open ground and never go back to the egg generally. There is more to consider like whether you plan to eat the eggs or hatch them out as replacement birds, since their lifespan is pretty short you need replacement birds, but hatching out every batch would give you a whole bunch of birds which is fine if you plan to use for meat as well.
I don't think I could manage hatching them and raising them to eventually eat. Even looking at them now I was having trouble. :( I just get too attached to babies.
Hello i am looking to get a young quail but i have never had one before it will be being kept indoors and was wondering what type of set up you would recommend and if i can keep 2 of the same sex together also are they easy to sex thank you (mandy from the uk )
Hi Mandy, yes people do keep quail as regular pets (my cousin keeps two in her house) in a standard bird cage. Personally, I would recommend a large cage at least 3 feet high and wide for two birds, because whilst quail can be kept in very small areas my observations over the years has led me to believe quail do enjoy space. Think of them as guinea pigs with wings and use a litter or mulch (or even sand) on the floor of the cage for them to play in. Alternatively, have a small tray with sand so they can have an occasional dust bath. If you are keeping the same sex together I would suggest keeping females as males have a tendency to fight. In regards to sexing of quail, yes it's pretty easy once the birds are over 4 weeks old generally the females have a spotted chest and the males have a coloured collar and on mature birds you can turn them upside down and check the genitalia for more info see my blog post here www.selfsufficientme.com/poultry/quail/raising-common-japanese-coturnix-quail-general-outline
Self Sufficient Me thank you for the reply it has helped alot i really appreciate you taking the time to reply i have subscribed to your channel just love these quails there adorable they will have about 6ft of room to run around but i am also planning on letting them roam part of my house for a few hours a day once again thank you ( mandy) 👍
... It's cool!! Hi from Russia! :)) there is a remark: Corrugated cardboard - slippery, folders at young baby birds part, injuries are possible. Grid of 10 mm x 10 mm - large for one-day baby birds. I advise to apply diapers to newborn 60 cm x 60 cm within the first week.
Thanks for your informative video Mark. I hatched some quail under a broody hen last year. I don't recommend it as she stood on most of the babies and killed them. I put remaining eggs into a incubater . Three hens survived. I can buy fertilised eggs locally . What time of the year is best to incubate some eggs? I am thinking early Spring, what do you recon? Can I introduce the babies from the brooding box into the large cage with the adults? Sorry if you have a video that answers my questions. I have only just found you. I am keen to buy that food you use and will look for it. I have been using turkey raising blend. About 32% protein, I think. I transferred it to a drum and haven't got the label any more. Thanks for you help.
Hi Mark. The very next video up answered my question about introducing chicks to adults. He he he. Do you have a video explaining your watering system please. It is a battle to keep fresh water up to my three. Need something less work so I can go away for a few days and stay friends with my neighbour who feeds them. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I better check your blog. ..maybe there? Thank again.
Hi Leigh-Ann in this article I have explained how I made the quail drinker/system www.selfsufficientme.com/poultry/best-drinkers-for-chickens-and-other-poultry The best time to incubate eggs is in spring or when the temps are stable and mild for least stress on the incubator unit. All the best! :)

Hi....... Mark, thank you for sharing your video 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 🎥👍👍👍
THEY'RE SO ADORABLE 🤯
...
It's cool!!
Hi from Russia! :))
there is a remark:
Corrugated cardboard - slippery, folders at young baby birds part, injuries are possible.
Grid of 10 mm x 10 mm - large for one-day baby birds.
I advise to apply diapers to newborn 60 cm x 60 cm within the first week.
Thanks for the tips Andrey, I do appreciate it. Cheers :)
Can I ask why Mama quail can’t just hatch her own eggs?
is there a website where you got it?
What was the name of the feed mix
Laucke game bird starter. :)
