This reminds me of the time when I was into RC helicopter (before the "drones" came out). There was an old guy with a glider and he always brought a lawn chair to sit on while flying his glider, because it takes forever for his glider to come back down. He's got the thermal mastered. :)
You can have a LOT of fun with DLGs! If anybody's new to the idea, don't think that you have to spend £1,000+ on an all-carbon competition model with ailerons, flaps, etc. A simple, built-up design with some carbon spar reinforcement and rudder/elevator only will fly well, too. I built a DIY plane (called Spindrift) with a 66" wingspan for under £50. Typical flights are around 60 seconds, but my longest flight with it from a flat field was just over 18 minutes. Something to bear in mind if you're looking for duration (it's really satisfying to hit lift from a hand-launch!) is that less is more. Every time you touch the sticks you're creating drag and shortening your flight. You don't NEED ailerons or flaps unless you want to fly aerobatics. If you want to tear about the sky then you won't be worried about duration, but even then, the more you disturb the model, the shorter your flight times will be. One really useful control on even the simplest model is variable wing camber. This is sort of like extremely wide flaps, or possibly very big full-span ailerons, but they're not used for directional control. I set mine on the right hand stick (I fly Mode 1) to have 1/4" of up movement on the trim, and 1" of down on the stick. They work just like a throttle. Unlike ailerons, though, they're not constantly waggling about in the airflow - they're most useful when you find a thermal, when you can give the wing some undercamber and slow the plane right down to turn tightly in the rising air. A modern radio has lots of mixing options that let you have ailerons, flaps, variable camber, and various configurations of airbrakes / spoilers all at the same time, so it seems that you can have your cake and eat it, too... But don't forget about dihedral. A simple rudder + elevator + variable camber wing is pleasant to fly because it has plenty of dihedral which lets the glider fly 'hands off'. It's a very efficient configuration. If you go for the 'angry' setup, with full aerobatic capability, you'll have a bit less dihedral, a lot less natural stability, and a model that will need to be steered more of the time. Every touch of the sticks reduces your glide-time so it's a bit more of a compromise.
I wonder if there is a 3D printer STL model for a DLG fuselage I can download and print. Getting into the sport might be cheaper than it’s ever been if you already own a 3-D printer. Does anyone know if there is a DLG community already doing this?

I wasn't expecting that guy to slam his plane and when you kept repeating it, the guys in the office next to me wondered what I was heehawing about. that was some funny $hit. Love the vid.
Hi, Stephen! What I love about thermal soaring is that, once you're in the 'zone' you can almost see the air currents. Watching the plane is fascinating - after a while you can react to the tiniest tilts and tips. If you spend long enough at it, you develop a sort of mind map of how the terrain affects the lift and turbulence over the field. I appreciate that a lot of pilots would be bored out of their skulls by such aero-nerding, but I love it. I envy soaring birds, which can feel every ripple. Having a variometer is interesting, but I prefer to just watch and react. It's nice to be able to almost feel the air you're flying through, rather than roaring about and smashing it aside because it's getting in the way. 🐦
@@EleanorPeterson I see where you are coming from and like your discription of soaring but my eyes aren't what they used to be so I like to keep my models close to me and with a spinning thing on front😉

The design of that model is really nice; large control surfaces, and I especially like having ailerons/flap-erons. As a kid I scratch-built a few RC sailplanes from plans. Years later I owned a "Fling" from Horizon Hobby I believe. I loved that little plane, but it was a little too small. Anyone recommend a specific company that makes these?
Great to see a Blaster 2... I've had a new, unflown Blaster 2 sitting in the garage for about 7 or 8 years, with no RC installed. Is your rudder spring-linked?
This would probably be fun if you knew of a suitable flying space with an obvious contrast in the landscape. Like an area mostly covered with greenery, a modest cool breeze for a sunny day in general, but some lot of brown dirt or asphalt in the middle of that which would provide an obvious hot-spot for thermals.
Very cool. Just for the record, this plane has a theoretical “ideal mass” which can calculated to provide maximum flight time. Not too light, and not too heavy.
Wonderful. The physics doesn’t seem to add up for the amount of work expended. I could only think thermals were helping. Anyway, shopping for one right now! Drones are getting very unpopular in my area for the noise and the way dogs react. This could be the go.
Man I love the video Martin! I recently scratch built a little foam (my most recent video if anyone is interested) dlg to practice and it is sure fun to fly!

That's one weird boomerang mate 👍😊
I used to thermal for 4 hours laying on my back and looking up 20 years ago but it was nice
I love my dlg's! It's what I am flying most of the time. "Just one more launch!" , repeat. Or toss one off the slope for some endless slope soaring.
Yeah with the way that thing handled would be a beast at slope soaring
I wasn't expecting that guy to slam his plane and when you kept repeating it, the guys in the office next to me wondered what I was heehawing about. that was some funny $hit. Love the vid.
I love it "soon get back to the proper planes and jets". While they would be quite fun I would get bored quite quickly, just my opinion 😉
That fail clip made very sad and cringe, the pain he feels looking up at his crunched model
Hi, Alex! Yep. I know exactly what you mean. What makes it worse is that it was caught on camera. In the good old days nobody had video-phones, so those nasty little accidents remained a secret between you and the 5-minute epoxy... ;-)
Its a super old clip, and I am quite sure he filmed it himself as it is a fixed view point. I want to think he was a good sport and published it himself
Its a good lesson for sure!
And there's not a darn thing kid can do about it - model is wiped out and at price close to 1K for some of those DLG models it hurts Duh...
That clip was filmed by Samuel Lee, featuring on of his own builds. He had it replaced pretty quickly and is still active in the F3K scene.
The design of that model is really nice; large control surfaces, and I especially like having ailerons/flap-erons. As a kid I scratch-built a few RC sailplanes from plans. Years later I owned a "Fling" from Horizon Hobby I believe. I loved that little plane, but it was a little too small. Anyone recommend a specific company that makes these?
never flown one but seen them flown. very cool since you don't need an assist motor/prop, powered winch, or elastic cable, to get them up there!
Jeez, last DLG I saw was in 2010 & the pilot had it up in the air for a good two hours.
That's thermals for ya.
My old lady could only dream I have it up for two hours.........just sayin'.
The way he throws it looks like some kind of Avengers move 🤯
Just getting into these things. So fun! Also I love that this is your most popular video!
Looks like louds of fun!!! This could actually turn into a sport that no one could see coming!!! This could be the sport of the future.
That other guy pile driving his glider into the ground after slipping is my spirit animal.
Great to see a Blaster 2... I've had a new, unflown Blaster 2 sitting in the garage for about 7 or 8 years, with no RC installed. Is your rudder spring-linked?
Get it built, its a load of fun! No spring, all just standard RC
A nice trick is to notice the morning and evening wind directions and exploit hillsides as upward "thermals".
Very cool. Just for the record, this plane has a theoretical “ideal mass” which can calculated to provide maximum flight time. Not too light, and not too heavy.
Cliff flying looks fun as well.
This guy is called Martin. You must be thinking of a different video.
Gotta find those thermals!
I enjoyed all the flights equally as much. It was nice to see you fly it back and catch it each time!
Glad you enjoyed it! Its addictive!!! Especially when you get it right!
The good old blaster. I flew competition in f3k , loved it. Now my dlg flying is just for fun
Fantastic video. You might even get a little cardio with this type of flying. Is there anything you can’t fly, Martin? Helicopters, maybe....?
Yeah, if you do it too long, you feel it the next day! As for flying, sorry, I can fly 3D helis too lol
DLGs rock. You can put in a towhook and compete in 2m, they make great slope soarers or you can spin around in a field and hunt a thermal.
The beauty of glider is silent flight.
Alwaus incredible stuff with mr Pickering !!!
BRAVO from France !
Nice video again! I think thats really good counterweight for high end 3d flying. Its quite refreshing and addictive. Just like fishing thermals
Totally agree! Thanks!
How satisfying was that to watch 👍
Wonderful. The physics doesn’t seem to add up for the amount of work expended. I could only think thermals were helping. Anyway, shopping for one right now! Drones are getting very unpopular in my area for the noise and the way dogs react. This could be the go.
What a performance from 4:25! I like it very much!
That thing looks like it would be a blast on the slopes too!
I fly flv drones, but this is a pretty cool concept 👌
Its thrilling. The plane Like a living stuff. Like drone scene in Interstellar.
Imagine taking this back into ancient times when flight a mystery. Then just going hey watch this. FLING!
That would be epic!
@@MartinPickering-PickeringRC "Being me your prettiest women or I shall make the bird of death appear again and swoop down upon your heads!"
I spent hours hand Launching my Wind Drifter two, I got so good with that single stick I won a slope soaring and winch launch competition.
DLG pilot here of 15 years. I’ve always used a neck strap. Never had a problem.
Yep me too
Built in Kharkiv Ukraine, hope those guys are doing alright.
1:12 Oi mate, you almost hit that other plane! Good save!
other plane almost hit a his glider you mean, but honestly looked as if they were some distance apart.
0:43 damn that hurts, I feel it
Love it. First time ever (aged 60!) tempted to have a go.. :)
Do it! There will be no looking back!
Nice flying. Cool to see you do stuff that us mortals might be able to do😉
lol, word
Das schlägt ja dem Fass die Krone mitten ins Gesicht, das ist ja super geil!
Wow, amazing, I want one for my students. I guess it only flies on days without wind. Is the store yours? How can I get one sent to Fiji?
I seem to recall seeing something similar for the military. Human launched glider drones that can take a peek over the horizon.
Man I love the video Martin! I recently scratch built a little foam (my most recent video if anyone is interested) dlg to practice and it is sure fun to fly!
That was fun. Thank you to whoever caused this video to enter my life.
lo que mas me gusta de este video es escuchar los gritos de vicent de fondo cada vez que lanza el avion
So after all that it still comes back!?!? 🤯
Awesome!!
Radio controlled
never knew this existed, super cool!
such a beautiful model. feels like a bird or a butterfly
Where can I buy one? Can’t seem to find any for sale. This video was recommended to me via RUclips and I love it... so thanks!
I like the silence
Wow I never saw that, it's the level 1000 of the paper plane !
whats with the "paper" plane? is there any paper? its really weird when people say "paper plane" to something like this..
@@rihA-g3e wow calm down, I'm not in plane or rc thing at all, and for me that looks like a awesome paper plane 😅 it's not a problem or an insult. And maybe I don't have the right words of english
@@rihA-g3e bruh chill even I understand what he tries to imply.
@@clementfouet2888 as somebody who is aeromodelist for most of my life i find word "paper palne" insulting, since it is the thing you fold from paper sheet and throw around in class to get kicked out by teacher.. so saying "paper plane" to high tech plane model, that somebody but years of development, 3D modelling and testing into it just sounds like straight insult. And im not even flying in that model class either.
Enjoyed the video and also your flying skills. thanks for sharing
how much does a glider like this one cost, looks very cool to try. so only two controls correct, rudder and elevator?
You could see alerions too that was set up for roll and flaps I imagine with it set up like that you get crazy lift from thermals and up drafts
Wonder if you could use leading edge slats on a glider
Wow superb. What a relaxing flight.
great flight
NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE……I HAVE LEARNED SOMETHING NEW…….THANKS FOR THIS
I always got a thrill catching a low thermal and riding it up from below treetop level. Some of the tasks we did in competition would keep your attention.
Might have to check out one of those, looks really neat, thanks
I was amazed at how it "automatically" flies back to you until 4 minutes into the video
Thus Glider looks really cool. I haven't seen one of these yet. glides beautifully
longest flying time? What were the circumstances? The top of the mountain?
Don't know why this was suggested but I thoroughly enjoyed it.👍🏴
Glad you enjoyed it
