Awesome video, Ninh! I hold a brown belt in karate (I haven't done it in years, but I'm hoping to get back into it), but never actually knew the competition rules, so this was really interesting to me!
Thanks Marc. I must admit, as a Taekwondo black belt, I find Karate's rules to be a little limiting. But i can see where the skill required to win competitions is. Good luck if you get back into Karate.
I have been practicing shotokan karate for 8 years fights can feel eternal because they stop time every time a point is made, a foul, exit from the ring, anything stops the time It's exhausting sometimes, but it's a wonderful discipline
There is an updated rule in wkf kumite since this year, where in case of a tie, let's say they were both 4 points after the match, the first one who scored during the match called *senshu*, will be declared the winner :))
The problem with most martial arts is that they keep adding new rules year on year so any guide on them will be obsolete by the end of the year. Taekwondo and Judo are the worst for this. My videos lasted 6 months before both were obsolete. Ridiculous.
My karate place is Shūkōkai, and it is a style of Karate, based on Tani-ha Shitō-ryū, a branch of Shitō-ryū developed by Chōjirō Tani in the late 1940s, and refined by his students, including Yamada Haruyoshi and Kimura Shigeru. Kimura shigeru is like my branches great master. The rules in a kumite tournament goes as follow: A hit to torso is considered one point, and an ippon is considered 2 points and u score a ippon by: kicking to the head (you have to stop short from the shoulder), punch to the back of torso, and knocking an opponent down with a followed up punch. But if you punch or kick weakily, you won't gain a point. the match can also end when your opponent can't fight back. the ring is still standard with the 8x8 m square. after someone scores a point, they both go back to their lines as usual and wait for the referee to announce who got the score. We have 2 referees going around the fighters. After someone scores a point, the referees uses their arm to point at who got the score, a low arm mean 1 point and an arm raised means an ippon which is 2 points both of the referees have to raise their hand to the one who got the score. if they have different choices, they make an agreement over who gets the point. After you score a point, your coach says something to you like pointing out your opponents weakness like hesitation when kicking or your movement is slow. One match is 2 minutes with competitors trying to get the highest score. if the fighters get a tie or a time runs out. The fighter who scored the first point wins. The penalty system and the penalties are quite simple: punch/kick to the head directly, wrestling, guarding your body too much and going out of bounds. If any of this happens during a match, the person loses one point. And if they do something wrong again, they lose 2 points. And it keeps getting 2 points until they get 5 strikes, after that the match ends. The boundary can be strategically used, when you are 2 points in lead and there's basically no time left you can run outside of the boundary and will lose a point, but you are 2 points in lead so you will still win. This is used quite often because it has no risks. There are 2 types of matches, singles and teams. Team are divided into teams of 3. Also being overly excited can lead to a penalty strike, as it is considered disrespectful to your opponent. Every attack you do has to have a fighting spirit, you shout one of these three battle cries: Kiai!, Ki!, Sa!. If your attack doesn't include a battle cry, you don't score a point. That's about it i guess, i quitted karate 1 year ago so my memory is prob outdated, this felt like writing a fking script man. Anyway this is a in depth explanation of shukokai karate. i hope you read this it took me 30 mins to remember and translate from Finnish to English. Karate is a family of martial arts from Okinawa that would later spread to other nations. Originally it was a combination of a specific school of Kung fu from china, mixed with okinawan wrestling (tegumi). Taekwondo, historically speaking, is a Korean school of karate. In the context of sport, sport karate, kyokushin karate, sport/Olympic taekwondo and some types of kickboxing are all competition styles of karate with different rules. Lastly, Karate is tied for either 5th (with judo) in martial arts that developed MMA, so you see a lot of karateka fighting today as mixed martial artists.
You should do the international jujitsu federations fighting system. Its not common where I am in Ohio but i understand its pretty popular in Europe. Its a fun and pretty easy to understand competition thats pretty much a mix of karate, judo, and Brazilian jujitsu.
Thanks Tom, appreciate your comment. As for GAA Handball - there's many variations of the game of Handball, most of which I don't want to particularly cover. If I get enough demand for it maybe, but I don't see it.
Is there also a rule in this type of Karate where you need to show "zanshin" after you sweep down your opponent, and immediately afterward, do an attack blow to the opponent to score a point (like Kendo requires)?
As this is the most contested version of the sport, I made a video about it. The problem with making the an alternate Karate video is that I have to consider if someone is actually going to watch it or not. Given that I covered the most popular form, I doubt it. If I get enough demand, then sure I'll consider it. But as far as it stands, I believe you're the only person that's asked for it.
Ninh Ly they're both about scoring points. The high kicks of taekwondo would translate well into karate. The hand techniques of karate would help taekwondo. I used to do freestyle pointfighting but it sucks because backfist/reverse punch is a common combo and like in WTF taekwondo they bounce around on one leg and flick out kicks with no power. I'd have preferred instead of karate (as it's so similar to taekwondo) that we have San Shou/Sanda
Scoring points: that's where the similarities end. With Karate, you basically score by being the aggressor with power and technique. With WTF, it's all counter fighting. I know I got bored when I competed in Taekwondo having to wait for the other guy to move so that I could score off him and vice versa. But each has their own merits and whilst the TKD kicks might translate well into Karate - Karate punches are all but useless in Taekwondo, as a decent fighter would just counter that with a long range kick ... and kicks score more.
+Ninh Ly it also says that an excesive blow is counted as a penalty, what if the opponent got knocked out? who's fault is that? thanks for replying by the way
An excessive blow (I think) is excessive force used solely to injure your opponent. If the opponent got knocked out with a legitimate technique, this counts and if the opponent cannot continue, you win.
It would be nice to know the reasoning behind the rules and the ways things are set up. Why is the team 3 for women and 5 for men? Is it because there are usually not enough female competitors? Why is a punch to the face the same value as to the body? A punch to the body is not likely to be as damaging as to face. A punch to the face can be a knock out and is much more difficult to land. Do you know the reason?
Knockouts are illegal in karate. They watered down the idea. They don't want it to be compare with taekwondo. Olympic style Taekwondo focus on full contact sport based sparring and they can knockout but karate is not

Hi, it says 'you can't attack the arms'. Does that mean you cannot use blocks also? I see people's lead hand comes out a lot, my fist instinct would be to block it or move it out of the way With an inside or outside block/movement. Can you do that?
This era of sport karate is touch. Back in the day it wasnt the case but now the rules make for a complex game of tag. There are penalties for hitting too hard... which is bananas to me.
Sweeps are allowed. Throws and takedowns are illegal. A sweep, reaps back on the defenders leg while being pushed whereas a throw he is being picked up in some way. (A sweep pulls them in and down. A takedown pulls them out and down. A throw pulls them up and down) All sweeps are legal if I'm not mistaken.
@@wildandatum8402 knocking out your opponent is not usually a good thing because it can harm the opponent, in karate (at least what i have been teached) we just put the opponent out of combat like pin them down.
the punching technique is legal if 1: extended fully (meaning the hand is straight without any *visible* bending) 2: is not left extended after scoring (meaning you pull back the striking hand after scoring also known as "hiki-te") 3: is not delivered to the front of the throat 4: is close to contact within 5 cm or less (further than that and it is considered a miss) That means any punch that matches these catagories are considered correct Jab: correct Straight punch (cross): correct Hooks/uppercuts: illegal Backfist: correct
Hey Ninh great video! I previously watched your taekwando video but was slightly sad to see it was WTF. As the ITF world championships are happening now could you please make an ITF video not just for sparring but patterns as well. ITF used to have been really popular but its never really been where it used to be but it is still an amazing sport. Thanks if you do!
No, sorry. The reason why is because WTF style is the more popular of the two and is the style contested at the Olympic Games which means that it's the defacto form that people will search for. I don't think many will specifically search for the rules of ITF. Thanks for the suggestion.
Oh ok thats fine i guess but when you think about it no one really specifically searches Finnish baseball so maybe doing ITF will show the other side of taekwando and you could compare
The difference is that a lot of people actualyl requested Pesapallo, whilst you're the only one that requested ITF Taekwondo. I'm not making one. But there's nothing stopping you from making it and uploading the same?
Ok thats fine I but im sorry I will be unsubscribing as I feel your responses have been aggressive and i am not sure this is the 'good karma' you promote it is not a comminity i want to be a part of
Any punch scored while stood up is 1 point. It doesn't matter if you land a punch at the back or the front of your opponent. It's still worth only 1 point. Please change it. Thanks
But it's the one that's the most contested and will be at the Olympic games. Sadly, I have no intention of doing any other form of Karate - there's just no demand for it.
I really don't get why people comment 'first'? I think it's popular with kids, but most of the time you get downvoted anyway and no-one ever sees the comment.

@@NinhLyUK There is an updated rule in wkf kumite, where in case of a tie, let's say they were both 4 points after the match, the first one who scored during the match called *senshu*, will be declared the winner :)) 😁😁😁
Do Rules Of Floorball
Running into Copyright problems with my Floorball video.
Hi, it says 'you can't attack the arms'. Does that mean you cannot use blocks also? I see people's lead hand comes out a lot, my fist instinct would be to block it or move it out of the way With an inside or outside block/movement. Can you do that?
It means the person can not target the arms. Blocking attacks is fine since they are not the targets.
Can you do rules of Ringette?
No demand for that one I'm afraid. Thanks for the suggestion.
um, did you mention senshu?
BTW, if you are planning to take your kid to a karate camp, keep in mind most perfer the womens format, over the mens
What if we knock him out with any clear individual attack
Win by knockout.
You should make a vid on floorball
I did - it's blocked on copyright grounds. The IFF don't want me using their footage.
ohh
Is karate hit power or touch
You have to hit with sufficient power and technique, otherwise they don't score it.
Just touching them will not score.
Hope that helps?
This era of sport karate is touch. Back in the day it wasnt the case but now the rules make for a complex game of tag.
There are penalties for hitting too hard... which is bananas to me.
How do teams win is it like wrestling with points
Kind of yes.
Can you do shinty
If there's enough demand.
Ninh Ly thanks you the MVP
I want to know which throws are forbidden!!??!?!?!?!?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karate_throws
Sweeps are allowed. Throws and takedowns are illegal.
A sweep, reaps back on the defenders leg while being pushed whereas a throw he is being picked up in some way. (A sweep pulls them in and down. A takedown pulls them out and down. A throw pulls them up and down)
All sweeps are legal if I'm not mistaken.
You can sweep and grab only one hand. Throws and knockouts are illegal and they watered down by the Olympics
What about knockout? Who is win? The one Getting knocked or the one do knocking?
The one doing the knocking out .. obviously.
@@NinhLyUK is that mean we can doing the knocking out? So the knocking out are so efective to win in karate? Is that True?
You can do, but that's not the objective.
@@NinhLyUK what is objective meaning? My english are not good
@@wildandatum8402 knocking out your opponent is not usually a good thing because it can harm the opponent, in karate (at least what i have been teached) we just put the opponent out of combat like pin them down.
wait he never said that you can get disqualified with 1 wrong thing you did so that means tareg hamedi shouldn't have been disqualified
Yes, he should not have been disqualified.
Are jabs hooks or uppercuts allowed in a kumite?
This isn't boxing.
the punching technique is legal if
1: extended fully (meaning the hand is straight without any *visible* bending)
2: is not left extended after scoring (meaning you pull back the striking hand after scoring also known as "hiki-te")
3: is not delivered to the front of the throat
4: is close to contact within 5 cm or less (further than that and it is considered a miss)
That means any punch that matches these catagories are considered correct
Jab: correct
Straight punch (cross): correct
Hooks/uppercuts: illegal
Backfist: correct
Kicking has diffrent rule sets.
Ok thats fine I but im sorry I will be unsubscribing as I feel your responses have been aggressive and i am not sure this is the 'good karma' you promote it is not a comminity i want to be a part of
Lol
Ninh is Karate safe from any injury???
Nope. Any martial art can be dangerous, no matter how much padding you use.
Oh I see I think I should try karate
It's a good discipline for sure. I personally am a Taekwondo practitioner before, but have done Karate.
There are a few more this about karate
JAPAN IS BEAST
Not necessarily.
The rules of floorball pls
Ran into copyright problems whilst uploading.
Do the rules of kabaddi
I already did. Got into a tussle with Star Sports over it, they got it banned and removed from RUclips and got me a copyright strike.
Please do the rules of real tennis or the rules of pickleball
No, sorry.
If you don't mind me asking, why?
Quite frankly: because I don't want to.
I'm competing tomorrow
Good luck, hope you did good.
Subscribe and check out my channel for more like this :)
Do bjj next, surprised you haven’t already
Trying to get round to it, but I've got a backlog of video content to do.
Road to tokyo 2020?
Basically, yeah!
Would you please do a video on sabakiball?
No, mainly because I've never heard of it.
If it's one of those 'fad sports' then it's a straight no.
Any punch scored while stood up is 1 point. It doesn't matter if you land a punch at the back or the front of your opponent. It's still worth only 1 point. Please change it. Thanks
Cannot edit a video once it's been uploaded.
@@NinhLyUK Fair enough :)
Rules of kickboxing
No, sorry.
Ninh Ly ok
Ninh, can I ask why? It's a lovely sport! Several varriants. Thai and lois boxing, american kickboxing, and sevate to name a few!
Kendo is a pretty cool sport??
I wouldn't know, I've barely seen it.
Rules of floorball
Ran into copyright problems whilst uploading.
Rules of short track speed skating
I thought those rules were pretty self explanatory.
To face or head
Why are they keep resetting after a hit
Just part of the rules.
you know that this is just shotokan karate in this video?Karate kiokushin is better if you can do video about it
But it's the one that's the most contested and will be at the Olympic games.
Sadly, I have no intention of doing any other form of Karate - there's just no demand for it.
10th
To comment and 1st to make 104 accounts
Okay then, cheers.
Who cares
Yaaaaaaas for once
I really don't get why people comment 'first'? I think it's popular with kids, but most of the time you get downvoted anyway and no-one ever sees the comment.
to be honest when I think about it idk either but pls reply to my other comments
Who's here after seeing the Olympics final after the dude who got ko'd won

*No Mercy*
Can’t slap to the face or punch someone in the arm? Seems rather bizzare
This isn't sumo.
