Ninh explains the Rules of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
To my many fans, I appreciate the suggestions and I'm sorry it took a while to make. But I got there in the end. Be sure to help me out by sharing this video where you can :)
EDIT: Minor oversight - BJJ is derived from Judo, which itself is derived from Ju Jitsu. There are some seriously whiny bitches out there who really should calm the hell down.
Can you make a The Rules of indoor (field) hockey?
Fistball ;)
@@justinwagenaar I wasn't aware that it different from outdoor field hockey? Maybe I'm wrong?
@@mrb.465 I have no idea what that is.
Ninh Ly They have many similarities but is also has some differences with outdoor hockey it is compariable with futsal and normal football
Takedown- 2pts
Sweep- 2pts
Passing the guard- 3pts
Knee on belly- 2pts
Mount and rear mount (back control)- 4pts
Hope this helps
Yes, well summarised.
When you sweep and take mount you get all points. (6)
as a bjj practitioner, i strongly recommend everybody starting practicing it, because it's a nice way of getting fit, learning how to fight, making new friends and learning to push your limits further
Subaru_Sama learning how to grapple Fersure but learning how to fight idk
Yes, I can attest that this is an excellent martial art.
Really tough to master though.
@@NinhLyUK but it's worth the effort, believe me ;)
As a former BJJ practitioner I agree. Did for a few years until i hurt my neck (strained it badly during no-gi takedown practice). Tried it afterwards but did not feel confident and was semi-afraid that I might hurt my neck more. Still lose feeling on my arm if sleep on a awkwardly and have some bad neck jams from time to time.
Looking back I did way less stretching that I should have done and in my gym we only trained in the sport for a hour and a half and that was it(warmup, technique and spar) . Should have done with my body and strengthen my neck. Not just train...
Practice with Gi or no Gi? Everybody hates this question
I am happy to report that one of my teachers showed one of your videos in my class showing us the rules of Curling. Well done and keep up the good work!
Ha, that's pretty cool.
Thanks very much, I appreciate that!
why did you copy my profile picture
I am a crappy bjj purple belt and this was an excellent video
Hey man, thanks for stopping by!
Love your videos bro, especially your 'triggered ones' - very cool!
Your purple belt is better than my white one!
Lol just stepping on the mat is more than the average person will ever do. Your channel is awesome, keep up the good work!
Appreciate you bro, thanks again!
Im just gonna step into this convo of 2 great creators dont mind me
Haha! Dunning-Kruger effect on display right here!
Finally i know the rules of Brazilian Jiujitsu, thanks for the video! :)
I thought you said you were going make a video about helping or something, but MAN am I glad to see this?
I'm trying bro, I've been literally editing other videos until my thumbs come off!
Awesome video man! Nice work and good to see your work again. BJJ tournaments varies and have different categories like "black belt only" , "all open (every belt contender can enter the tournament)" or organisation based tournaments.
Yes they do. Thanks man.
I was wondering whether you were gonna do a vid on BJJ!! Great work!!
Thanks man, yeah sorry it took a while.
Didn't know this was a thing! We'd be lost without Ninh Ly😊
Hey man, thanks very much!
Yeah this is actually quite a popular martial art thanks largely to MMA/UFC
Congrats on your main channel's 100th video, Ninh! As of me typing this, I haven't even watched the video yet. I'm sure it will be great though, because you are the king of explaining the rules of sports (and self-help, of course!) I often watch your videos while eating crisps at night before I go to bed. I'll keep the comments coming and wait for your replies, because, as you explained to me in an earlier video, it boosts the interaction ratings and makes your videos more visible. Cheers!
Update: Watched it. It was great, but that was to be expected. ;-)
Thanks man, I'll try and keep up the content creation.
At the moment, I'm creating for several other people as a job, so it's tough to find time for my own things.
But hey, I appreciate you tuning in - you're always welcome here!
I love that I keep finding new videos that you did that I haven't seen!
They're all on my channel alright!
Very well explained. I was practicing jujitsu for about a year and a half, and I definitely miss it now that I've moved and now all the dojos are closed. I quit going for a while because I let a relationship and work take control of my life and free time. That was a mistake, because after I took that brief hiatus, it was very hard to get back into the swing of things.
Yes, exactly. This is a tough discipline, but you'll get your form back so long as you remain injury free.
@@NinhLyUK I found BJJ in a time when I was struggling to have purpose and meaning in my life. I was working just enough to cover basic expenses, and I had just switched programs at my university, and had to take classes that were very easy and required minimal effort. That's when I met a husband and wife bjj owners, because they came into my work one day and I asked to start going to their school.
After a few months of going, I suddenly start going less frequently and eventually decided to take a hiatus. I had quit to make more time for my new girlfriend (who wasn't too interested in going), and I was also picking up more hours at my job. Not only that, but the lessons were becoming very expensive. After a couple months months off, I tried multiple times to get back into it, but I struggled to stay committed. Now that I have a better income, and a relatively more consistent work schedule, I hope to start going again.
Godspeed bro, I feel your struggle!
Another great video, most underrated channel on RUclips.
Thanks man, I appreciate the comment!

Thank you, very educative!
Great video as usual Ninh! I would love to see a video explaining how all the codes of football (association, rugby, gridiron, Aussie, etc) came to be. Which is the “true” football?
Thanks man.
'True football' - that's a bone of contention for several countries.
But believe it or not, I actually have script explaining this ... I just need to actually make the damn thing.
Please do!
Omg! Thank you soooo very much for this one also! For some unknown reason I've never requested you for any video but you always seem to know just what I (we, I'm sure!😁) need!👌👍☺

Thanks again. Will do.
Speaking about Brazilian sports, I recently attended an Capoeira class and a loved it! While it is somewhat of a unique martial art, a video on capoeira would be awesome!
Interesting concept. I used to do capoiera. It's a cool martial art and the demos are pretty neat. The competitions however are a little dry and it'd be hard to explain and make it interesting at the same time.
I'll consider it for sure.
@@NinhLyUK Yes, after you mentioned it, I can see the complexity of the task of explaining
Capoeira in a 4-6 Minute video. I think this mainly comes down to the fact that it is a very "diverse" sport because of the many varying forms of play. But, yeah a video on this sport would be awesome!
@@DanTheCaptain As always, if I get enough demand for sure!
Helio Gracie is smiling at you!

So does going from half guard to side control score points?
My friend needs to see this
Be sure to share this video and help someone out.
Thanks for stopping by!
Got it
Ibuki's theme from SFV - nice
Well spotted!
It depends quite a bit on who's running the tournament
Any former wrestlers tried jui jitsu? Thinking about giving it a try
I think your skills would be very transferable.
I'd say give it a go - you never know, you might be a future world champion in training!
I started with nogi bjj then moved to wrestling then to the gi. Wrestling will help your jitsu and jitsu helps your wrestling. I recommend jiu jitsu to most people. 80 percent of people would like it if they gave it a try
Jiu Jitsu is good because once you get them on the ground you can submit them and actually do damage as opposed to keeping them pinned
Wow the scoring rules are actually similar to wrestling surprisingly
Yes, exactly.
Yesss finally
Yeah, sorry it took so long.
Half guard - also known as “snuggling”.
Man, you have a funny way of looking at things?
Ibuki theme? What about Laura Matsuda?
Lightning projectiles are not Ibjjf approved
Good comment
is there escape points like wrestling
I think it's comparable to a guard pass. But there's no points specifically for escaping the guard to get back to neutral.
no there are not, although afair in grappling (FILA/UWW) there are
Thanks.
If you guys have the athletic health to do BJJ DO IT! I did it when I was younger. I fell out of it but have had time discussing it with my brother in law who is really good and am DYING to do it again. It's a rush and I recommend it to everyone!
Yeah totally! It's a fun sport and it's a tough martial art to master!
Kicking and head butting good?
aye, i have been waiting for a BJJ vid, ive been doing it since i was four, i believe there is no better martial art, fight me.
Ryan Cokus in my opinion boxing’s more fun (for me) but everyone has a preference right?
Ryan Cokus btw bjj is also quit fun to do its tied second with Muay Thai (for me)
@@johnbriny1126 i don't really care for how fun it is, for me, its more of how useful it is, and most people can throw a punch, but when the fight goes to the ground, not a lot of people know what to do from there. But id assume punching someone in the face would be more enjoyable than snuggling with another sweaty man.
@@johnbriny1126 because thats what BJJ basically is, lol.
Catch > BJJ
@3:38 Check Oil Light = On
Yes, exactly.
I personally find it a trevestie, that a reverse from side control, doesn't count as a sweep. I mean, I get that a sweep hast to be started from a guard position, yet, if I reverse from side control, I massively improve my position and advance from defense to offense.
Should be 2 points as well.
Thanks I'm starting bjj
Cool, good luck!
it's a tough martial art to master.
Rules of Kengan?
I suggested this too
Thanks Jonathan, sorry it took a while to make.
1 .is it true that to like baseball you must choose your favorite team?2.did that lady touch her butt or something?3:46-3:49.
1) No.
2) I think she was trying to reach her belt from the back, but it doesn't look that way.
1. thanks. 2. to me it does.
Difference of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Japanese one please.......
I thought that was fairly obvious personally?
I wouldn't say that submissions are done to cause the opponent excessive pain. Some may be, but that's not the whole truth.
Yes and no. Obviously you have to cause pain in order for them to submit. Whether it's done maliciously or not is up for debate.
@@NinhLyUK Do chokes hurt? Maybe, but i would say they are done to put the opponent to sleep. When it comes to armbars etc jointlocks you could say that pain is the motive. Anywayyysss thanks for the video!
@@likolagi Having your airways closed off so that you can't breathe? Yeah I'd say that it was painful! No worries.
@@NinhLyUK plus people have different pain thresholds.
I like this video but it need couple more thinks. 1) Heel lock should be explained more detailed, because it's a huge problem and comes with lot's of misconception and repetitive reason for DQ. 2) BJJ is root from Judo, not Jiu Jitsu, Jiu Jitsu in name is come from the similar competitive system with scores, basically BJJ is a major tweaking of Judo ground combat. And Judo have root's in Japanese JJ. But difference in JJ and BJJ is huge and can be noticeable immediately. 3) 3:24 it's Anaconda choke, while RNC comes neatly around neck.
This is a beginners video. Clearly if you knew all of that, you didn't need to watch it.
There's a kid on my wrestling team who did BJJ for a long time and kept doing all the funky bjj stuff like stopping after he would've gotten a mount and starting in the bjj down position instead of the refs position, hes great fun I love him
Ha, that's cool.
I wanna learn how to do Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu but I don't know how to do it. Does anyone do BJJ currently and knows how to do it?
Yes. I’ve been doing BJJ since 2018. Go to your local BJJ gym or mma gym that offers BJJ and jump right into it.
It’s a lot of fun, great exercise, and satisfying progression. Not to mention its also a nice cerebral challenge with a great community.
No striking, right?
Yes.

No sir as in board carrom

It's an old video, but BJJ doesn't derive from Japanese Jujutsu, it comes from Judo

That's very specific, thank you very much!
BJJ came from Judo not JJ,and technically is Do-gi
Judo ... which is derived from Ju Jitsu.
@@NinhLyUK Yes (well, ju jutsu, not jitsu, I digress), but BJJ is derived from judo. You're misrepresenting history by saying it is derived from jujutsu without crediting judo. It was judokas who brought it to Brazil. Jigoro Kano saved the old samurai arts from oblivion. If there were no judo, there'd be no BJJ. Give credit where it's actually due. Apart from that, good vid. Very interesting.
@@NinhLyUK its called a timeline dude, you cant just jump over a step of the timeline,JJ birth judo and judo birth Bjj,you dont say your grandmother gave birth to you,you say your mom did
@@denisflorian2431 my my, such touchy comments from an otherwise innocuous mistake.
No striking ?
Nope. It’s all grappling. It’s basically folding clothes with someone in them
Why doesn't pulling guard score your opponent a takedown?
It probably doesn't. Guard itself isn't a scoring technique.
@@NinhLyUK BJJ players pull guard all the time and it doesn't affect the score. Pulling guard does not score takedown points for your opponent.
@@matrixxART sorry, that should have said 'doesn't', not 'does'.
I'm in BJJ 🥋
Cool.
did I miss something or did you go through the entire video without the most important rule: no striking your opponent
Brazilian jiu jitsu actually came from judo witch did came from japanese jujutsu (olso spelled ju jitsu). Judo and japanese jujutsu are similar and closely related but are not the same thing.
I feel like I'm watching a Naruto episode with this music.
Kind of, yeah.
This comment is original.
Very much so.
The art of folding clothes with people still in them
Interesting analogy!
Will this work on my grandpa?
I thought it said Britain Jiu Jitsu so I thought they would just slap each other until they shake hands and say "Good work ol' chap"
I think that actually exists in some form or another?
@@NinhLyUK did I miss a video?
There's a sport called 'shin kicking' where they boot each other in the shins. Then afterwards, they do the aforementioned hand shaking and ol' chapping.
So basically BJJ is kinda like Folkstyle wrestling? Instead you can use submission
Kinda different.
Well i continue to prefer Judo...
Do shotput
As in, the athletics event?
UGH. I wish you could slam your opponent, I am master at that. I guess I have to stick with wrestling.
I don't think there are any rules against it ... but I doubt you'll be able to get them to that point.
,@@NinhLyUK I checked the rules on wrestling and Brasilian jiu-jitsu and wrestling. Apparently, you can't squeeze people in wrestling. I don't know what I love more, squeezing people until they pass out or slamming people so that I can put my opponent down faster. So which sport would you think would help me the most or is the most efficient, wrestling or Brasilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Pretend it’s folkstyle and you have to submit them instead of pin. That’s what im doing at least
There needs to be a Brazilian Bo Taoshi.
I'm not sure how that would differ from Japanese Bo Taoshi ... except if it's contested with Brazilian Bikini Models?
Then it might be different.
@@NinhLyUK there was one pool Bo Taoshi by Japanese bikini models.
