Please bear this in mind before you make any asinine suggestions on sports that no-one cares about. Do you even need an explanation of the rules you're suggesting? Because most of you seemingly already know what they are? Unfortunately I cannot magic these out of my ass in 20 minutes, so please be patient. I am working on them.
Respect to you! I don't think that people realise how long it takes, even though I say in each video "it takes me ages to make one of these things". I honestly don't mind the requests for other sports. Most of the time, they're already on my list of other sports to make, so I already know about them. But when you upload a video and then immediately get 6 requests to make completely different sports, it's like "jeez, you didn't even comment on the sport of wrestling?!' which was the whole idea of making it. But thanks again man :)
Thanks Ron! I really wasn't kidding when I say at the end of each video "it takes me ages to make one of these things". This one was one of the longer ones, some of the more simple sports like Calcio Storico took way less time. As for effort ... I'll still try and crank one out every week if at all possible! :)
I wrestle for highschool this was really entertaining and I never knew the offensive position was called that and the defensive position I call it top and bottom great video keep it up
I grew up in a state that values wrestling as well as in a small town that historically succeeded and getting several high school wrestlers to State each year. Each wrestling meet in our hometown packed the gym. It’s a really fun sport to watch and sometimes it’s even more fun to watch the crowd twist and turn as if they are doing the wrestling themselves. I’m really glad I grew up in a time and place where wrestling was - and still is - valued.
Finally, a comment that wasn't an immediate request for a different sport! Thank you very much Dan, I appreciate your kind comment! :) I've got plenty more sports videos, but as you can tell ... they'll be churned out one a week at best.
You are awesome, Enough said. Question, the USA does NOT tend to have much interest in Judo. Do you think that has to do with our pedigree in Folk Wrestling?
Thanks Sami. I'm not sure the reason that Judo isn't popular is because of Wrestling, but certainly the Americans have taken normal Freestyle Wrestling and made it their own. I prefer it to any of the other Olympic versions of the sport for sure.
Thank you for this great video!! I have never heard of Collegiate Wrestling before but it was very interesting to learn about it! Greetings from Germany!
Vielen Dank Fabian. Ja, Collegiate Wresting ist sehr beliebt in Schulen und Hochschulen in den USA und es ist ziemlich lustig zu beobachten! Danke noch einmal! :)
Not making a request here. I just think it would be funny if you made a video explaining the rules of professional wrestling, even though that's all staged.
Absolutely not. That's not a sport - it's fake shit. I can do you a script right now if you want ... "Ninh explains, the Rules of WWE. WWE is fake wrestling that is not a sport, and 'wrestlers' do whatever the hell Vince McMahon wants. The end". See, it wasn't that hard?!
Cynical or not, it's not a sport. Even Vince McMahon openly admits it's not a sport, but it's scripted entertainment. Hence why he renamed it World Wresting Entertainment after the real WWF filed a lawsuit.
It's for insurance reasons young kids and teenagers doing this sport without any control and just flailing around can seriously injure each other so limitations need to be set.
Great videos, Ninh! The only update to this video is in college wrestling, the first period is 3 minutes and second and third periods are 2 minutes. In high school, all three periods are 2 minutes. This is otherwise the best overview of a very complicated sport I've seen!
Ninh explains - The Rules of Collegiate Wresting (College Wrestling). Also known as NCAA Wrestling, Folkstyle Wrestling and Scholastic Wrestling, this is a variation of wrestling that is very popular in the United States of America. Watch this short beginner’s tutorial video guide on how to wrestle in college amateur wrestling. Learn about takedowns, reversals, escapes, near fall, pin, riding time and more.
Well put together, clearly explained video. Great for someone to use as reference. As you mentioned, if you watch this and then continue to watch wrestling it will all make sense eventually. Great job! Thanks for taking the time to promote our sport. Much appreciated brother!
Well explained with clear video examples, and often more than one on the same point. Living as I do in Iowa City, the final clip of an Iowa wrestler throwing coach Tom Brands to the mat was a great ending. I'll look for it on your channel page, but if you don't already have it, a video explaining the difference between freestyle vs collegiate/folkstyle would be interesting, as I had assumed they were the same but just found out this Olympic cycle that they are not.
Hey Ninh, love the videos. I read your pinned comment and this is just a video suggestion for the future: the differences between freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling. I know these videos take a lot of time to make and I appreciate them. Keep up the good work!
I think I already answered that one, but here goes: Yes, I'll be making videos on both Freestyle and Greco Roman, but as per a comparison video - my other wrestling video isn't garnering that much interest. It's all about demand and views! Thanks for stopping by.
Loved the video. The work that is put in really shows. I know you don't really like requests but if you did a video on Greco-roman wrestling it would be appreciated. Keep up the good work :)
Thanks Ace, I appreciate the comments. I honestly don't mind requests, but I found it annoying that the first 6 comments on this video were requests on other sports, and had nothing to do with Wrestling (which defeats the whole object of me making these videos). And yes, I'm way ahead of you with Greco-Roman Wrestling. It's been on the list for some time, but as mentioned in my rather long comment at the top ... I cannot magic these out of my ass. They really do take forever to make and whilst I appreciate the demand, I cannot supply as fast as anyone would like, especially seeing as though I'm making no money from doing this. Thanks once again.
Thanks for the comment. Yes I understand that. I get that it's a compliment and a form of appreciation that people want me to make lots of videos.. But take a look at it from my point of view for just a second: 1) You've just spent 13 hours of your life (unpaid) to make a video to educate people about Collegiate Wrestling, which is a fantastic sport. The first 6 or so comments was nothing to do with wrestling. No questions, no comments, just requests for other sports, some of which are totally NOT sports! It makes you feel that you've just wasted 13 hours of your life. 2) Most of the time, the people asking about these sports have already asked for them in a previous video and I already answered them ... several times over. 3) The people requesting these videos already know the rules of the sports they're asking for. So ... why would they even actually watch it? If they don't know the rules, that's fine, but if they really want to know that bad ... I suggest google it. 4) I have more than two brain cells, but the people requesting these sports assume that I've never heard of ''golf' or 'boxing'. They also assume that it's not already on my list of at least 20 other sports to make videos about. I've pre-planned about another 20 sports, but I cannot make them in 20 minutes. Can you understand why I'd be a LITTLE bit annoyed?! As mentioned to other users, I honestly don't mind the requests. But this video in particular highlighted the abhorrent lack of understanding of what it takes to make one of these things, hence why I made my point at the top.
Thanks man, I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Yeah, it's really popular in the US and their variation is significantly different to both the Olympic styles of Greco-Roman and Freestyle. I think it's the hardest of the three, but Wrestling guru's would probably disagree. Thanks again.
Yes most would but I get were your coming from to a lot of people folkstyle wrestling is the hardest to master for others it's freestyle I think Greco-Roman is the but I personally think it all depends on a wrestler's skill set and strengths as to whether or not they excel at specific types of wrestling
To anyone going to watch a high school match, some of those things just get pushed by the wayside. I wrestled in h.s. and a year in college. H.S. we were taught, 2 for reversal, 1 for escape, 2 for takedown, and pin. No points for near pin or riding (i dont know why tho lol)
Man this shit seems complicated as hell to someone that’s never wrestled lmao, I’m getting into the sport late at 21 as I want a base to get into mma. I’ll be doing club wrestling at my school and hope I can walk on to our D1 team if I’m good enough. I’m pretty athletic so I’m hoping if I put in the work I can do well at this. It looks fun! Wish me luck and hope y’all do well too
I wrestled up through high school, and I once was nearly disqualified for stalling too much. It was a team meet where all weight classes are wrestled, and the team that scored the most points wins. A decision is worth 3 points, a major decision is worth 4, a technical fall is worth 5, and a pin, forfeit, or disqualification is worth 6 points. My team was up by 6 points, and I was the last match. I have wrestled my opponent several times before and knows he is a defensive wrestler who loves counter moves. I decided not to try and win the match and play entirely defensively. Towards the end of the third period, I was down by 6 points and decided to "run away" the rest of the match, but the ref didn't like that and gave me 3 stalling penalties on top of the 2 I had previously, and 6 total stalling penalties results in a disqualification. Fortunately, I was able to "act aggressively" in order to make the ref stop the stalling calls in the last 30 seconds. I lost the match, but the team won. I would later win in double overtime against this opponent in the end of year sectionals tournament.
Can you do the differents of NCAA and NFL Football because i heard there are a few rule differents like: NFL 2pt conversion from the 2 yard line NCAA 2pt from the 3 yard line
Two presidents you would never expect to be wrestlers were in fact wrestlers as young men - Abraham Lincoln (who, although he was rather skinny, had extremely long arms and thus an extremely long reach) and William Howard Taft (who, although he wasn't as heavy as he would be later, was actually pretty big all his life)!
Abraham Lincoln also did pro wrestling witch at that point was more realistic than now. Lincoln is also invator of pro wrestling move called "Chokeslam" famous move used by WWE's Kane, Undertaker and Big Show LOL
Excellent Question!!! There's lots of differences - I am going to make a separate video on both Greco-Roman and Freestyle to explain this. But if you can't wait until then ... - Freestyle Wrestling is the closest style of Wrestling to Collegiate. You can attack and defend all parts of the body. The main difference is in the scoring. You score more for throws in Freestyle, whereas in College it's scored exactly the same as any other takedown. This means that Freestyle rewards risk and explosive moves, whereas Collegiate rewards dominance and control. I believe that Collegiate is the most technical of the three disciplines. - Greco-Roman is different, as you can only use your arms and torso. Anything below the waist is strictly prohibited. There's a lot less options, and the sport rewards strength and balance. Again, scoring is different and Greco-Roman also rewards risk taking. In Collegiate, exposing yourself with risky moves is a huge no-no. The period/time format is different for both kinds, and it's a disadvantage to start at the bottom in Freestyle and Greco-Roman, but it's a slight advantage in Collegiate. Hope that helps?
I enjoyed this video... seems like folk style wrestling is only popular in the US. I wonder if there are any high school wrestling leagues that give a point for riding time. I wrestled at a small high school in Iowa (US) and we never got any riding time points.
Thanks Mike. Yes, this form of wrestling seems to only be popular in the US. I don't think any high school leagues have riding time - I thought that was strictly for NCAA. Thanks for the comments! :)
Riding time was eliminated from high school wrestling in the mid-1960s. I wrestled right after it was eliminated and every team still had a riding time clock around.
There's a few differences, but they make a massive difference. I have videos on that and Greco-Roman coming up, but I'vve not managed to make them yet.
As a wrestler I love seeing the word spread about the rules. However parts were left out such as dual meets, and how teams win. And how team points are scored.
Hi Trey. This is just a beginners video explaining the rules of wrestling, not an overall summary of the how the format of competitions work. Because other countries might not have the same format, it's not worth mentioning. Also, try and explain all of that without boring or confusing a complete beginner and you quickly realise why i left it out. Thanks for commenting.
Never really knew it was it's own sport, i always though american collage/highschool wrestling was just normal freestyle wrestling. Never really heard about folkstyle
The video covered the rules of the actual sport. The team scoring isn't necessarily a 'rule on how to wrestle', and also not all events are team events., But if you (or anyone reading this) really needs to know, a quick Google search would find the answer. Thanks.
Why do the wrestlers wear headbands on their heads and ears? I know that in other forms of wrestling they don't wear them. Could you explain that to me, Ninh Ly?
its to prevent ear damage, if you take enought bad falls on the ear some fluid will harden creating lumps that need to be drained known as coli flour ear.
throwing isn't 3 points its 2 points for takedown, and you can lock hand if both wrestlers are standing or if you have both the head and a limb otherwise my got too head and arm snap down would be illegal.
Lemme ask you a question Jack ... Do YOU know what the Rules of Canoe Polo are? If you don't know the rules: that's fine, but do you need me to explain them to you? If you do know the rules, you don't need a video explaining the rules, right? I'm curious Jack ... which one is it???
Kyle Richardson WRONG! - Not only do people actually say fall in this footage I found... it's on the bloody screen! (Bottom left hand corner at the 0:58 mark) WRONG! - When the referee blows the whistle, the contest is over. The referee has to see a pin for 1 second in college and 2 seconds in high school. THEN he blows the whistle and the contest is over. WRONG! - As Blader Hater mentioned, there's different types of mat.
It's so interesting that there's so many wrestling variants. Even high school wrestling is a little different than college I believe. Which wrestling variant had that weird mid-match ball lottery thing with the blue/red balls after 0-0 periods? It was one of the Olympic ones. The Olympics almost cut wrestling out because of that!.
Yes, there's plenty of variations - I tried to cover high school's regulations in this video also but it's mostly the same. The style you're referring to in the Olympics with the mid-match selection is Greco-Roman Wrestling, and is used to determine which wrestler starts on the top or the bottom. I'll be making a video about both of those shortly, but yes very off and the Olympics almost made a blunder removing Wrestling from the schedule.
So I hear, "Yeah I was a state champ" ! A short time later it's discovered this champ never heard of riding points. He's rather shaky when it comes to points awarded for takedowns, escapes, reversals and pins. One grappling Guru said he didn't have to worry about all that because he pinned everybody. I would at that point start demonstrating by putting him in a Stretcher or maybe a chicken wing half nelson so he could work his magic and show me how he would Escape. I take wrestling Liars seriously and I have to admit I like to make them squeal. So sue me.
not sure who your refering too but i will provide a valid explanation, if they were refring to highschool wrestling (at least in the state) then riding time isn't used or atleast never taught. also the terms you used are new different to me, we called what im assuming you mean by "chicken wing half" a "barred nelson" but i have no idea what a "stretcher" is. please enlighten me.
Okay, something is very wrong here. These don't look like wrestling costumes to me. Why isn't it a ring? What about Tombstone Piledrivers, Chair Shot, Vaderbomb, Powerbomb, doing flips, or hitting people with trash cans? (I'm just joking by the way) Guess what they wear? Doesn't it look like bathing suits?
This sport is not just for guys. In the nineties or the early millennial decade, the high school wrestler with the most pins in the least time was a girl!
PLEASE READ: This is how long it took me to make this video.
(3 HOURS) - Research and finding decent footage.
(1 HOUR) - Scripting
(1 HOUR) - Recording Audio, Editing, Fixing Levels and EQ
(3 HOURS) - Hard Edit, cutting clips and making them fit the audio
(1 HOUR) - Soft edit, editing timings, re-find new footage for missing examples.
(1 HOUR) - Title screens, colouring and adjustment layers
(2 HOURS) - In screen graphics, animations, transitions.
(1 HOUR) - Encoding, uploading to RUclips, editing closed captions, adding tags, custom thumbnail, updating on website, pre-load on social media.
TOTAL TIME - 13 HOURS TO MAKE A 5 MINUTE VIDEO!!!

I never knew just how much time it takes you to make these videos. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the effort you put into making them.
Thanks Ron! I really wasn't kidding when I say at the end of each video "it takes me ages to make one of these things". This one was one of the longer ones, some of the more simple sports like Calcio Storico took way less time.
As for effort ... I'll still try and crank one out every week if at all possible! :)
watching this made me realize how long a Pro wrestling rule video would be. (Or if a pro wrestling rule video is even possible.)
I wrestle for highschool this was really entertaining and I never knew the offensive position was called that and the defensive position I call it top and bottom great video keep it up
Thanks man, yes officially it's offensive and defensive. But most people (including myself) knew it as top and bottom. Thanks for the comment! :)
You gayyy boyy
Did you prefer being on top or on bottom?
I grew up in a state that values wrestling as well as in a small town that historically succeeded and getting several high school wrestlers to State each year.

At any rate, I was only joking.
Ninh Ly I love your videos but I lost a little respect after this comment
My buddy wrestles for our school and I’ve gone to all the matches but I have no clue what’s happening. Hopefully this will help me understand more
Great, glad this video helps! Check out my channel for more videos like this :)
Don't you love it when you stumble across one of Ninh's videos you haven't seen😃
Ah awesome, thanks very much! Be sure to check out the rest of my vids just in case you missed one.
I've been a fan of Scholastic Wrestling all of my life, know the rules thu & thru. I still greatly enjoyed this vid. Great content, m8!
Awesome! Thank you!
Wow, so many rules. Gotta watch this many times. I can already tell I prefer freestyle rules more. It just seems less complicated.
Yeah out of all the forms of wrestling, this is probably the most complicated in terms of understanding how the scoring works.
Pretty easy once you do it/watch it a few times
It's for insurance reasons young kids and teenagers doing this sport without any control and just flailing around can seriously injure each other so limitations need to be set.
can you do Greco Roman and freestyle? I know the rules cause I do train in wrestling in a gym but I love these videos oh and can do rugby 7s too
Sorry for late reply. Yes, Greco and Freestyle are on the list - Rugby Sevens already made.
Thanks. I never understood the rules until now and couldn't figure out why one guy won and not the other (except for a pin - I understood a pin).
Great videos, Ninh! The only update to this video is in college wrestling, the first period is 3 minutes and second and third periods are 2 minutes. In high school, all three periods are 2 minutes. This is otherwise the best overview of a very complicated sport I've seen!

Yay! Your back! I'm looking forewad to your upcoming videos? What sports are your planning to do next?
Got a whole list of them, but they're not in any specific order. They get done when they get done.
I have seen that match like 5 times now. Fooking amazing. Watch Lachlan Giles take on Rida as well. That Rida dude is a monster. Huge and technical.
Yeah, that match was pretty amazing.
Thanks for the upload, amazing vídeo, greetings from Brazil
Obrigado Anderson, eu aprecio suas palavras amáveis! :)
In college wrestling the first period is 3 minutes long followed by two 2 minute periods.
Great video Ninh I love these videos, and I could watch them all day! 😀😀
Appreciate it Daniel! Still got more sports to make, although they'll be one a week at best.

it was a joke XD
I did this style in wrestling in high school but I had to quit because of bullying but I hope to be a pro wrestler
This is a tough sport to master. I've met college wrestlers, they're tough as hell to take down.
Good luck bro.
@@NinhLyUK thanks
I will not rest until you make a pro wrestling rules video
You'll be waiting a while. Like when hell freezes over.
Great video, but could use an update! May need to create separate videos on high school and collegiate now as their scoring has changed.
Nice job maskin this vid

I really hope that Greco roman wrestling is implemented in some school
So what's the main difference between this, and Greco roman in the Olympics?
Ninh Ly thanks a lot, always happy to learn new things!!

Anytime!
@@NinhLyUK Awesome dude 👍😊
does anyone know the name of the move at 2:20 ?????
Thanks!
cool video can you do the rules of a demolition derby please.
Please see the comment pinned at the top. Thanks.
I miss that matt. Wish this style was in the Olympics
Ninh Ly sounds about right that the riding time points is just at the college level. Iowa did not use riding time points when I was in high school.
Riding time was eliminated from high school wrestling in the mid-1960s. I wrestled right after it was eliminated and every team still had a riding time clock around.
what's the difference between this and freestyle wrestling?
There's a few differences, but they make a massive difference. I have videos on that and Greco-Roman coming up, but I'vve not managed to make them yet.
you're a star as always
YES!!!!!! On of my favorite sports to do.
Thanks man, I'm not finished there - I've got the other two kinds of wrestling to do as well. Appreciate the comments :)
Ninh Ly nice. Can’t wait for the next ones!
How about the rules of Mixed Martial Arts (UFC)
You really don't know the rules of UFC?
I do. But there are some people who don't
I copulent find how to get over a relationship nihn where is it
Not made that one yet, it's coming but it might be a while. Chin up, you'll be okay.
This is cool.
The explination for individual scoring was explained. What about TEAM scoring?
The video covered the rules of the actual sport.
The team scoring isn't necessarily a 'rule on how to wrestle', and also not all events are team events.,
But if you (or anyone reading this) really needs to know, a quick Google search would find the answer.
Thanks.
Update: takedowns are now worth 3 points.
You forgot about blood time and injury time. But it's alright great video tho
please do one on kabaddi
I already did. It got 160,000 views and then got banned worldwide from Star Sports. Still trying to fight that one.
but these are educational videos!!! really sad..
That's what I tried to argue. Crap, isn't it?
Why do the wrestlers wear headbands on their heads and ears? I know that in other forms of wrestling they don't wear them. Could you explain that to me, Ninh Ly?
its to prevent ear damage, if you take enought bad falls on the ear some fluid will harden creating lumps that need to be drained known as coli flour ear.
U forgot about throwing which is 3 points and u can only lock arms/hands for a pin
throwing isn't 3 points its 2 points for takedown, and you can lock hand if both wrestlers are standing or if you have both the head and a limb otherwise my got too head and arm snap down would be illegal.
can you do how to overcome a rejection or a breakup
That's on the list too.
Could you please do the rules of canoe polo
Ah go on though
Lemme ask you a question Jack ... Do YOU know what the Rules of Canoe Polo are?
If you don't know the rules: that's fine, but do you need me to explain them to you?
If you do know the rules, you don't need a video explaining the rules, right?
I'm curious Jack ... which one is it???
Ideally yes I would like you to explain the rules to me😂 But seriously though love the new videos keep it
I'll keep trying man.
No one says fall and when you win by pinning it has to be in a certain amount of time after the whistle
Oh and the mat isn't rubber it's foam with a thin rubber/soft plastic cover
Kyle Richardson
WRONG! - Not only do people actually say fall in this footage I found... it's on the bloody screen! (Bottom left hand corner at the 0:58 mark)
WRONG! - When the referee blows the whistle, the contest is over. The referee has to see a pin for 1 second in college and 2 seconds in high school. THEN he blows the whistle and the contest is over.
WRONG! - As Blader Hater mentioned, there's different types of mat.
How about the rules of WWE Wrestling explained!?
Ninh explains: Fake Wrestling. The end.
@@NinhLyUK lol i think it would be funny if they technically do have official rules, despite being scripted and all that.
Daniel Cormier vs Chuck liddel. wrestling match
can you do how to help you self motivation
your
That's already on the list.
Ninh Ly the list for what
Ninh Ly nevermind I found it
0:02 but don’t get confused of pro wrestling because it’s fake
This isn't 'pro wrestling'.
I'll be making a video about both of those shortly, but yes very off and the Olympics almost made a blunder removing Wrestling from the schedule.
also I fell like i/ my oponent get penalty points by locking hands
Yes.
That looks very similar to Greco-Roman wrestling.
It's more similar to Freestyle Wrestling than it is Greco-Roman, but I'm making videos on both types to explain the differences. Cheers.
Suplex City
i'm a wrestler
Good for you.
The 1st period is 3 minutes long. 2nd n 3rd are 2 minutes.
Yes.
The first period of college wrestling is 3 minutes
Olympic wrestling is like physical numberwang.
I think you have those two sports mixed up?!
Do WWE!!
That fake shit? No thanks.
Who's here after the first Diary of a Wimpy Kid book or movie?
Just you so far?
@@NinhLyUK Well, that's what you said last time at my comment on your Bo Taoshi video.
@@va960 that's probably because you're the only one asking those questions?
@@NinhLyUK *Ahem* Yeah.
Где нормальные броски?
are you done with this channel?
That's Pro Wrestling...
05:20🤣🤣🤣🤣
hot.
Thanks bro.
Helpful but turn down the bed music and watch the sibilance sometimes your audio was lost in the mix
WWE WWE205 NXT
This is outdated.
it’s from 6 years ago
Also, if you're a dude who says they're a chick, you have a huge advantage.
This sport is not just for guys. In the nineties or the early millennial decade, the high school wrestler with the most pins in the least time was a girl!
It's for anyone
