- Throughout my gray hair transition, I have received comments that some women liked my hair but did not like their own. "I have bad gray hair," or something like that. This idea never sat right with me--I mean, when we start the journey of ditching the dye, part of the experience is seeing your natural hair for the first time in years--even decades. We don't even know what we have. There is a profound power in seeing this truth about yourself, and I'm not at all here for aesthetic hierarchies. There is no good or bad--there is what is. And we have the choice to love it! That's the great news.

I would like to pass on advice from my hairdresser. When i decided to go all "grey", she said "honey, never ever call it grey. Grey is thought to represent something old, drab, useless, invisible. Hair is never grey, it is SILVER. Silver represents something precious, timeless and valuable." This struck a chord in me so since then I made it my mission to pass this on to others. We silver haired women and men are treasures full of experiences, stories, wisdom and skills. We are valuable and timeless and should never be invisible. Our hair should always be referred to as silver. She did add one thing that many forget to do...make it shine, shine shine. Use whatever product you need, make it glisten like icicles. Great advice!

What I find most fascinating about the “ugly gray” conversation is many people think this thought but have covered their hair for so long they don’t actually know what’s under the dye. The “ugly tapes” running on youth, beauty, and aging are so toxic. Thanks for continuing this conversation in a gentle thoughtful way.

A Gen Z woman with a silver white bob was in the salon when I was having my root touch up in 2019. Hers was most likely an expensive process to get there, but I instantly wondered if my hair would look like that. That day I had a shift in consciousness that led me to grow out my natural silver. Saw another Gen Z working in the grocery today with long white extensions. Gen Z associates the long silver white hair with trends and starlets. The beauty industry has brain washed older women to think all gray hair is hideous and aging. It has been quite profitable for them to do so.

I couldn’t agree with you more about matching our skin tone. I’m naturally neural to cool-but I always had warm hair colors because my eyes are brown. Now I can see the wisdom of my natural coloring. I agree about Hollywood, too.

Awesome video, my mother stopped dying her at age 65 she regretted not doing it sooner she said afterwards, the only reason she didn’t was “ what would her friends say” we worry more about what others think then how we feel is all that matters. Im aging gracefully, I stopped dying my hair a year ago and now it’s totally white and love it. The remarks I get from some woman especially family at first was “ your too young to go gray” or “ I wish I was brave enough” but now “ it’s how beautiful you look I wish my hair was like yours” we all need to stop comparing ourselves to others and just accept the beauty God has given us as individuals. I want my grandchildren to remember there “ Glammy” as glamorous.
Thank you for this wonderful, thoughtful comment. We have been training to compare ourselves to others, to find ourselves wanting and then to buy things to fix it. By loving ourselves we can break the chain.
Some food for thought: as you age your touch ups shift from every six weeks to every week edge touch ups. Because your roots and edges a week later shows and you enter the touch up phase all over again. I’m a restored stylist. Best to have shiny healthy grey.

Absolutely, yes! Toward the end of my hair-coloring phase, my touch ups would last one week and then I was scrambling to hide the growth with spray powders.

I love all your videos! This one really resonated with me. I am one year into my grey hair grow out and just received the comment a few days ago that I am not grey enough to go grey. Shannon, I’m so sorry you ran into someone so narrow minded to still think this, and so rude as to say it out loud to you! Hang in there!! Going gray is a natural part of being an aging humans. It typically starts gradually and ends - if we’re lucky enough to live that long - with complete saturation. There is no point along that path that is “not enough”. I’m about 60% gray and have waited 6 years now for my grays to get friendly and form a nice big fat streak. But they’re not having it. But it’s all part of the journey. My silver highlights are unique to me, as yours are to you. I hope for all of us embracing our natural color that we celebrate our differences and that none of us feels “less than” because we don’t fit into other people boxes of what’s “enough”.

I needed this video today. Thank you. I am the first one in my family to go grey naturally and sometimes I feel quite unsure of my decision. I started coloring my hair since my late 20 ties (I just turned 60) and stopped coloring about a year ago. My hair never felt and looked this healthy. I also stopped losing my hair. It's quite thick now. All this dye was terrible for my hair !! My hair color is more white with a view silver streaks, and I think it looks quite pretty. My husband loves it too,that's a big plus. All in all I am glad I did it and I am glad you did it too. Seeing how pretty it looks on others encourages me to know I did the right thing.

Beautifully said, Beth. ♥ Your video reminded me of a time right before I started coloring my hair (early 20's).I didn't realize it (until my hair stylist pointed it out) but all my gray was at the back of my head. Everybody (friends, family, acquaintances) would always compliment my hair and say it looked like sparkly tinsel. I didn't understand what they were talking about because I couldn't see it. When my hair stylist told me 60% of my gray was at the back of my head, I was horrified and that's around the time I started coloring my hair. My younger sister (who has never colored her hair) is mostly pepper with a few sparkly bits of silver and it's GORGEOUS and I can't believe I missed out on all that beauty! I love my hair now but wish I had been able to enjoy the entire process from the very beginning. I literally went from the hair dye straight to mostly white!

Such a great video! I have so much to say! I was one of those people who thought I’d never let my grey hair show as I thought it would look bad, or make me look old. But then I started seeing all the women on RUclips documenting their grey hair grow outs and I found none of them looked older, and they all looked even more beautiful. It’s amazing what our natural hair can do for our complexions - a natural, perfect match! So I began the grow out, February 2021. I found my hair was MUCH less salt than I thought it would be. I’m probably only about 20% salt, 80% my natural dark brown. But I have a few beautiful salt streaks (I call the one at my left temple that is about 1.5” wide, surrounded by my natural dark, my Cruella deVille stripe!! Haha), that give my hair dimension like I’ve never had. Beautiful, unique, natural highlights and lowlights.
And the quote from Tyra Banks is so interesting. I have always had a full face of freckles. And while I don’t ever remember hating them, I was teased when I was young. Most children outgrow freckles like mine, so it’s quite rare to see an adult with freckles - not sunspots, but true, “little red-headed girl” freckles. While I had to dye my hair (for 35 years) to be that red head I’d always wished I was, I never hid my freckles. I thought it was hilarious a few years back when “freckle pencils” were all the rage and people were drawing on fake freckles!! I have only ever worn a light powder foundation, so as to never hide my freckles. Sometimes I worry they’re gone, and then look in the mirror and say, nope, still there, phew!! I’m just so used to them, I don’t really see them anymore, unless I look!!
Hi, Shelley! I 100% agree that every person I see post-grow out looks younger. The brightening of the hair lifts the complexion-or something like that. I adore a Cruella stripe-so chic and distinctive.
It’s interesting what you say about your freckles-I always wanted them myself. 🤩 it’s funny that we all got the message that we have flaws to fix but also sometimes our flaws come into fashion 😂😂 it’s better just to love what you have rather than chase an ever-shifting ideal. 💖💖
@@InfinitegardenbyBethK My Cruella stripe is down a bit from my part, so actually barely shows! Unless I put my hair up into a pony tail, or if I tuck my hair behind my ear and it gives me a lovely strip of silver from my ear down - sort of an “under dye” like people used to do all the time!

I grew my hair out 4 years ago. My girlfriends begged me to keep coloring. They’re resigned now and have started the process. I even liked it in the growing out stage. When it was finally a gorgeous silver white there was about 3 inches of black on the ends. I was with my friend and she was walking behind me and I heard her exclaim “ you have Rocker hair , very cool “. I just started laughing. I love my hair now . You are a gorgeous Silver Fox.

Excellent video! I have been growing out my hair for almost 3 years and I’m only about 30 percent silver and the rest dark brown/little auburn. At first I was disappointed that it wasn’t the beautiful white/gray like yours, but instead realized it was My signature color and unique to me and I am enjoying the slow reveal. You make great points today and I know you made a lot of women happy today to hear your thoughts.

I'm one of those people who said I couldn't have nice gray hair, since I have such few gray hairs. I often wondered what a few gray would look with auburn hair. Perhaps I'll experiment next month. We're doing ok. Unfortunately, my younger daughter got Covid. I guess it was inevitable, considering she's been taking care of her hubby and the baby. She's lost her sense of smell and taste. So not fair. They are diligent about masking, and up to date with their vaccines.

Very well said Beth!, I have salt and pepper with the salt being almost all at the front of my head. My hairdresser, who is very young and has always supported me with my decision to go gray, says to me every time she cuts my hair, that i seem to have two different heads of hair, and that make us both laught, but i love it and have never regretted going gray.

I quit dyeing my hair ten months ago. I am 53. I've noticed I seem to be getting more RESPECT, which I've had problems with all my life. My hair looks blonde in the direct sun. When not in sun, it looks light to medium brown. My mother can't say what color it is. It's a mix of blonde, light brown, medium brown and gray. Everyone says it's pretty. I am only 5'2" tall and not noticeably obese. I cut out ALL the dye Minecraft d June last year (2022). I had a pixie cut all summer. Now the bottom layer is past the bottom of my neck. My sides are about 4-5 inches long. I'm parting my hair in the middle. (I'm a soft classic)It's all MY hair! I wash it now about every four days. I'm liking it more and more.
Unfortunately, most women in my area color their hair till they die.
My 79 year old mother never colored her hair. She never wore make up either. She was a dark auburn that turned chestnut brown, then white. She has warm hazel eyes and very pale skin. Everyone tells me my mother is "pretty". I agree. We do not favor facially. My eyes are COOL hazel (grey/blue/green).

You have beautiful hair. I am happy with my silver hair. I have seen a lot more women going natural and they rock it. It has to be maintained with a nice style , clean, healthy and shiny. I also think as one ages the silver hair does a lot to make the face softer, at least in my case. I believe there is a problem with ageism in this country.

I dont think grey looks ugly.. i just think of the quality of the hair and the wattage you mention. Scares me sometimes when i see the wattage as i walk past a mirror in the shopping centre. Please respond as i love your attitude.
LOL the wattage is a huge change if you’re used to dying your a deeper color. I’ve learned to love it, but I know just what you mean.
Not to be an contrarian but I think there is also one point that needs to be mentioned - many women such as myself didn't start coloring our hair because we wanted to cover the grey and look younger - we started coloring our hair because our own, natural shade was not flattering. While some say that our own natural color is always what suits us best, that's simply not true. For example, I have a very pale, warm skin tone but my natural color is a cool, ashy brown. When I add gold or red to my hair, my skin comes alive and glows, but with my natural mousy brown hair, my skin looks washed out, dull, the dark circles under my eyes look darker - it's basically like wearing an unflattering color except instead of it being a piece of clothing around your neck, it's on your head. So when grey is coming in still mixed with a lot of my natural dark hair, it doesn't look good , not because of the grey (the jury is still out on that) but because of my unflattering natural dark hair color. I wouldn't necessarily describe it as 'bad' - after menopause you have to be grateful to have hair at all! - but it's certainly not beautiful and flattering in the way some women's (like yours) is...
This is a great point and one I relate to. The way you describe your coloring sounds a lot like mine. I started lightening my hair in the summer with a hydrogen peroxide dilution. My ash brown hair never seemed to be flattering. I dyed my hair for a long time because I wanted to and enjoyed it. 🥰

Mine is similar to yours in length and cut.. but i did have a trim for the 3rd time in 3 months.. I actually have silver/white on my sides near my ears and salt more than pepper at the back and back sides. Then on the top i have my natural color plus white patches & silver . And my front peices are white & silver plus a smidgen of orange tinge. (And breakage a little too) My color change happened quickly in September. It seems it was due to stress/mineral deficiencies and hormones plus a jealous woman belittling /shaming my hair all the time as it was long and 95% my youth natural color with only like 8 silvers and hers was not so attractive as mine .. So i feel it got grey mixed up all over. For 4 months i got weird and negative looks. It was very upsetting.
Plus my hair has been dry brittle and now i have breakage on my crown.....due to mistakes by 3 hairdressers i went to to try to work with my new color changes and me having to redo my roots since 1 hair salon colored my grey as she hates being grey and then another bleached it to help me on a grey journey and it got dry. Another hairdresser gave me a protein treatment which made my hair brittle after he told me he doesn't do protein treatments.. .
So your advices may help me going forward ...now that i am back to dyeing my roots for now again. I was told by a counsellor to love my self and think and tell myself i am beautiful and amazing and for the last 3 days it's helping me. So you are so right about loving yourself..

The negative age thing associated with the salt and pepper natural transition doesn’t get life or air with me. When we let others dictate what we wear or the color or length of our hair we lose who we are. Who would want that….

As i said before mine came from health problems. I had little issue with my few silvers. So having this change is disappointing. I worry because the texture of grey hair isn't as good as pigmented hair. I worry about the quality of my hair. Plus my regrowth isn't attractive at all. And a hairdresser said it was yuck. And then colored my hair the way she wanted to... and then said i have a better hair to color than her. What a change in her mind. Litterally contradicted herself. She's 59 and has big issues with her white hair and said it would take too long to go natural when i suggested how good it can look. I keep meeting ageists. The younger girls however said just to silver tone my blonde hair and work with that and that way my roots highlight the white and blend in.. i am grappling with all this at moment.
Melina, please try to see the hairdresser’s comment as something that she needs to work through. The strategy I’ve the silver tone over blonde is exactly what I did with mine. If you haven’t seen it, I have a video at the 17 month mark that shows my progress month by month.

I really hate my gray hair. It's a decent gray/silver on the top 7 inches and a super crappy mousey brown on the bottom part. HATE IT SO MUCH!!! I even shaved half of my head a few years ago and it STILL is icky brownish on the bottom 4 inches. I want to change that SO BAD!!! I I just want silver or gray hair with no brown. ugh.
I'm 61 and have been NOT dying my hair for the last 11 years, trying HARD to go gray. it's sooooooooooo frustrating to be half and half and not being able to make it what I want.
This makes me so sad!

I'm always relieved when I hear other people refer to aging as a privilege. My large extended family has lost six loved ones before/during the age when they might have been privileged to start growing salt-and-pepper hair. And so far, I myself am living two years beyond a medical prognosis. The six months of gray I've grown represents twenty-five percent of the borrowed time I have on a surprisingly
successful research drug. So I totally agree. Whatever " growing old" is... it is most certainly a privilege. Hooray for growth! 👩🦳
Here's another type of silver hair that's considered bad: the dreaded yellowing hair. (Insert horror movie scream here. 😱)
I'm very "live and let live." It's not wrong to tone your silver hair, and it's not wrong to leave it alone. I've already used three different purple toning products, and I'll probably continue using them. But I've noticed the marketing of blue/purple toning products has already had the same subtle impact on me as the marketing of many other beauty products, which is to make me feel like my new silver hair won't be good enough. I think if I'd never heard this marketing, I might have just thought some silver sisters had warmer toned silver hair and some had cooler. But now when I see the silver hair of women around me, it's almost an automatic evaluation on my part. How silver is her hair? What does she use? Ugh. What if we glamorized warmer toned silver hair? I’ve been thinking about the toning item myself. I have been testing purple products and so many of them are for bleached platinum blonde hair, and that means for my hair they are too potent. They often lump silver hair in with blonde almost as an afterthought in the marketing. It’s not always clear if it’s genuinely a good fit. It leads me to wonder exactly what you are-is this just shifting my urge to correct a “problem”with my appearance that isn’t actually required? I’m happy to think about this some more. 💖💖
