I'm giving myself one more month of gray growth, then I'll cut inyo a small afro (4 months in total) . It looks a bit of a mess now, but it's temporary. I started hating dying my hair, and I took out the color and then just threw everything in the trash! Going grey will be my birthday present to myself!

Hi Beth just came across your video. You are beautiful! I'm in my 4th year and would never go back to the hair dye. I get so many compliments especially from complete strangers to include men. Who knew that they would even notice. My husband and family were very supportive. I believe that going gray, silver, white shows confidence and that's what men like. I never received compliments when I was dyeing my hair. I feel that the dye was like an old carpet covering hard wood floors. God bless you and keep up the great videos.

I'm a small, petite, athletic almost 52yr old with long, all one-length medium/golden brown hair and I stopped coloring cold turkey 14 wks ago... I'm probably only actually like 20 % gray - not much, but looking forward to whats to come and digging the cool silver tones at my forehead, temples, etc.. its a very brave new way of life quite liberating to be honest.
      Cheers to us 💛🌼🧡💫🌺

Joni Heisenberg I completely agree with you. A lot of women say they could never look like me… I reminded them that I am nothing special, I am just a woman who had to go through the same process. I think a lot of women can’t stand how they look during the transition so they jump ship. I totally understand those feelings… It is definitely hard!

I have so few white hair yet, but the first ones I saw on me made my heart beat so strong! I was so glad I've made it! I've stop dying my hair about a year ago because I couldn't bear it anymore, neither could my poor and thin hair. It's been years fighting major and very, very severe depression, several hospitalizations, strong medicines that made my hair even thinner than it is already. I was so near to death for so many times... I've gained a lot of weight in such a short period of time because of the treatment I couldn't recognize myself, lost all of my clothes all of a sudden, and couldn't stand look at myself in the mirror. The times when I was worst, I didn't want to live at all. The better times, i didn't care to live, nor how I was, nor anything. Those last two months, though, the medicines have changed again, for the zillionth time, and I felt some improvements in my feelings. Then I looked at me at the mirror for the first time in months. I was just there, standing, seeing that half dyed hair, very thin, shapeless, full of baby hair and broken hair. I saw my very pale skin, dark circles, very rounded face (I used to be very slim before), prominent belly, you know? Everything had changed so much! Wrinkles around my eyes too. It felt to me the change was from one day to another. And then I saw. I saw that little white baby hair right on the front. And then I've realized there were a few others. Do you understand what I mean? I was getting older (I'm 35), I've survived this all and I even have gray beautiful hair!!!! And those wrinkles, marks of my fights, they were like prizes, not like these loose of youth like people say. I'm Brazilian, and Brazilian women are very careful about their looks, there are soooooo many beautiful women, and they make a lot of procedures to stay young as far as they can. But suddenly I've realized I was not one of them. Suddenly I've realized I wanted more than anything to enjoy my process of getting older, feeling the change of my skin, anxious about seeing my hair grayer soon, accepting and taking care of my body and how I am today. I'm sorry the long story. I truly understand everyone's different, that's beautiful and important. But sometimes I feel sad about the women that will never feel the freedom of being who they really are, embracing that, taking real care of that. For me, it means I've made it. And I'm making every single day. I'm really happy about it, and happiness is something I haven't felt for so long.... I'm really glad you're in this path too, and to know there are a lot of women doing that too. It's more than just have gray hair. It's about a kind of value we share. I loved your video and you look amazing in this gray beautiful tone! 😘

After chemo my hair came in thick, white and beautiful. Unfortunately I let my hairstylist talk me into colouring my hair. Fifteen years later I have decided to let my hair go back to my natural white/gray hair. My current hairstylist is on board with me and will help me transition into my natural hair. Yes I do have a definite demarcation but I don’t care. I am so looking forward to completing the transaction. Good luck to you.

I recommend you use this moment because it takes a long time to grow your hair back to where it was. Years ago, it took me over 2 years. Then when I got divorced my friend/stylist talked me into coloring it again so I would be more attractive to men at 58 years old. Ugh. What a dumb reason. I really regret coloring it again because I am starting to go natural now, after 10 years and it’s going to take another 2 years. Ugh.

Hi Beth! I'm 57 and almost 6 months into my transition. This is the second time watching this video for me. It's nice to have a reminder as the months go on. In the beginning I was so desperate for my hair to grow. I kept obsessing over it and looking in the mirror. Now I've relaxed a bit and am actually enjoying the journey. I even caught a glimpse of my hair (pulled back) in the car mirror and appreciated the contrast of my S&P against my fading dye. I can't say I loved it but I like where I'm heading. I don't think a pixie is in future for me but I'll probably do a shorter funky cut at say the 12 month mark. Thanks again for making the videos.

Wow, you look fabulous. I was so close to dyeing my hair silver to try and blend with my roots to go to my grey, but seeing your video I have decided to stick it out and let it grow out naturally. I am 47 and have been colouring my hair for years and I am so tired of touching up my roots to see the grey again within 2 weeks. Wished I done it last year in the 1st lockdown but I love your hat idea. I have a few of those 😀 thanks you for the inspiration and tips on clothes and make up palettes. Oh my gosh! I also started going gray in my early twenties and started coloring my hair. But as I got older, the grays were more prominent and I was coloring my hair more often. I finally couldn’t take the line of demarcation at my part any more....my hair would look great except for that telltale white line. I think I was in my forties when I quit cold turkey and cut my hair really short. I’ll be 59 this year and my hair is collar length, gray and curly too! I can honestly say I love my hair now! Great video Beth! Thanks for sharing! 😘👍🏼

OGLYASDI - similar story to mine! I started getting white hair when I was 15. Colored it in my 20’s - 40’s dark brunette to hide the white. When I turned 50 I realized I was coloring my roots every 2 weeks which was expensive and probably not healthy. So started transitioning to blonde. For the past 8 years I’ve been getting highlights and lowlights to attain the wheat blonde. The past 1.5 years my stylist was blending in the large portions of white with the foils. I had my last color in March 2019. I have used purple shampoo a few times a week to keep my shoulder-length hair bright without any brassiness or yellow tones.
Last week a woman commented on how pretty my hair looks.

I decided to go for it. I’m going to be 65 this year. It is what it is, and I don’t need to pretend I’m done with dying my hair. What a relief , I already feel weight lifted off of myself. I’ve dyed my hair for 30 years. I recently dyed it dark grey and I love it but want it natural.

Ann Marie, I just ditched the dye a couple of weeks ago and I'm so excited about it. I colored my hair every 6 weeks and for 25+ years, it's a surprise every morning when I run to the mirror to check my roots. The color is way darker than I remember and I have way less grays than I thought I had but they're coming in nicely. I can't believe I'm wishing for more grays LOL. Good luck on your journey! Best wishes to your daughter on her upcoming wedding.

This is one of my favorite "going gray" videos!:) Thanks for the wise, truthful advice. (Your hair is beautiful!) I'm in "Month 9" of going gray. My hair is almost shoulder length. I, too, have been going "cold turkey". I haven't gotten it cut very short. You're right - the transition isn't EASY to go through. There are days I've looked in the mirror and thought "what am I doing? I feel so old". And it's true - you just don't know what your natural color is until it's grown out! Give it time. I'm 53, and I have a lot of white, mixed w/ some streaks of salt & pepper. I've recently realized - I think i'm going to love this!

lrb It really was very eye-opening for me to realize that once the process was completely done how different it looked compared to the grow out process. Thank you Beth. I have just made the decision to let my natural hair colour start to show through. I will be 55 next month and I have been fighting my gray hair all my life. I was born with jet black hair with a large patch of gray at the back. I have always had to have the 'runway streak' dyed every 4 weeks. It has not been an easy decision to make but I feel now is the time and your journey has shown me it is possible. If I can look and feel even half as good as you do in a year or so, I will be very happy. Thank you for suggesting the fb group, I have already sent a request to join. Thank you for the inspiration.

Hi Beth pleasure to meet you.
You have been very helpful since I am starting my going gray journey
I have been doing my highlights for a very long time, at times would turned yellow n had to do them quite frequently which became a bit expensive and time consuming.
So decided this summer no more!!!! Cut my hair short so all highlights which were yellow wanted them out, so glad I did.
I am enjoying my grays, although comments are not positive is how I feel n look that counts.
I am 61 yrs old n love my grays .
Thank you for your story, can really relate, really amaizing story.
Is not how you look to others what counts.
Is how you see yourself and feel what really counts.

What a beautiful person you are! Inside and out. I am 67 years old, and my last hair color was Feb 4th, 2022. I decided to go gray because I too found no joy getting my hair color. I have a blonde color now which does not really suite my face where I have dark brown eyes. I am excited to continue this journey. I think I will be a salt and pepper color. More salt around my face. This is what my hairdresser has told me. You have given great suggestions. I joined a support group two weeks ago called Going Gray Gracefully. They seem to be very supportive. I am from Hollis NH but now living in the South. I will be checking out your other videos. Thank you for making videos.

Love your video, and your sharing of your experience. I am 65 years old, and have dyed my hair for over 30 years. We were on a RV road trip for 3 months, and 1/2 way through, I HAD to touch up my roots. I had been toying with the idea of stopping the madness for a couple of years, but a special event would come up, and nope. My husband said to take this opportunity to stop dyeing, but I couldn't. Bought the dye, did it in the rv park restroom (because we didn't want the dye running down RV drain tubes into the tank. While in the process, I was so embarrassed as women came in. So, after that moment, Sept. 13 2018, I was done. And I stuck with it. I am going cold turkey also, and boy, it has it's challenges. My hair was long, just above my bra line. When we returned home, I had 4 inches trimmed off, just touching my shoulders. Next cut in 6 weeks, I am going for a shorter bob, about an inch below the front of my jaw. My hair grew like crazy the first 3 months, and has seemed to slow down. I have blorange near my gray, and auburn brown at the ends. I always say, it's like a box of chocolates; you never know what you are going to get. And, I am glad I adopted that mantra, because it seems to change all the time. Your hair is beautiful, and I will look for that facebook page. Thank you! Priscilla

I’ve just started on the long process to growing my natural hair out from bottle black. I’m about 5 weeks in I think. I’ve got a lot of silvers, but also I think my natural mousey brown will still feature too.
More of a cinnamon and sugar rather than a salt and pepper lol.
But as I haven’t seen my natural hair colour in 25years, let alone seen it with the silvers in, I’m sure it’ll be different to hope I imagine it as it grows.
I estimate it will take my approximately 4-5 years to grow my hair out as I refuse to cut it above my shoulders. I’m looking forward to the journey as I already have the time, now I’m just putting it to good use!
Plus I’m extra lucky that I’m employed care for my grandparents 24/7 365, so I don’t have to worry about looking professional in the workplace. I’ve got the freedom to go completely cold turkey and not face any issues in the workplace.

My hair stylist always tells me not to grow out my color cause it will "add 10 years to you" but I'm ready. I can't wait to see what the color will be. I hope it's a pretty silver and not too white.

Linda Romanowski That’s a typical thing that stylists say. You have to remember that you are no longer going to them for a service that generates income for them… They are very incorrect in saying that women look older with their gray hair. Personally I think women look softer and more their age when they have their natural colored hair. My hairdresser was shocked at how soft and beautiful my hair was and how it looked against my skin. You have to do what feels right to you!

Wonderful video!!! Beth, you are so beautiful and likable. My problem is different. I'm 77 and stopped dying my hair.......BUT! it's mostly dark, dark, dark brown. White, silver, or gray is flattering......but this dark hair with my older face??? I'm hoping for more silver one of these days. However...I'm determined to be the authentic ME, and that includes no more (toxic) chemicals on my head, and just let the chips fall where they may. I never hear of other older ladies like me with hair being much darker than their dyed hair. Thank goodness for baseball caps!!! Thank you again, for sharing your story and journey. Your support is so valuable to to many. Love from San Diego, CA.

Ginny Lorenz Thank you so much for your sweet comments! Yes that is a different sort of problem isn’t it! I know my sister who is 60 years old had this issue as well. The older she got the darker her hair got. She did continue to highlight hers, but that is definitely a personal choice!

I'm done! Been covering for 27 years. My daughter has been asking me for 2 years, "When are you gonna let that silver mane grow out?" I couldn't figure out how to do it with out the "skunk" line on my head. I called my hair dresser of 20 years this afternoon a few hours ago. I looked at some videos and stopped here. You are beautiful! I have a. lot more gray/silver. First gray hair at 16! Not sure how, but I'm starting today! You have encouraged me greatly!

Hi, Beth. Just happened upon your video. Thank you!! I need to update my photo! I'm about six months in. The hardest thing from me was my "friends" who told me how it was going to age me. And it's true - I get the most compliments from strangers - men and women! I'm loving it so far, but it is VERY difficult at times as well. Thanks for your words of encouragement. Much needed today!

Lori Donovan I delayed starting this whole process because I had friends tell me that I was too young to go gray… And that it would make me look older than I am. So I understand what you’re saying! I’m so glad I decided to do what I thought was best. Good luck with your journey!

So this is my 2nd try at going grey and staying grey since I originally started my journey in Jan 2017 and was completely finished with the journey as of the beginning of this year. But in May of this year I caved and dyed it I don’t think I was ready then but definitely feel stronger and more sure now emotionally about this. It’s been almost 2 mos since I last colored. Thank you for the encouragement and tips. 🌻

    Hey Beth
Thanks for this informative, inspiring video.
I’m 2 inches in of the grey re-growth band on long black hair... eek😳
I’m not loving it, I have days when I think I’m just gonna go colour it.
But it’s Mid Autumn here in the SH so with Winter looming I can wear hats, wrap scarves around my hair etc. I don’t go out much in Winter, I pretty much hibernate so I think I’ve picked the right time of the year to do this. I’ve had super super short hair before so I know it suits me but it took me 3 years to grow it this long so I’m not going to cut it all off.
However I’ve decided for every 2 inches of re-growth I’ll cut off 4 inches off the bottom.
I’m guessing as it took me 3 yrs to get it this long it’s gonna take me 3 yrs to grow all the colour out and be back to this length again..🤔
I’ll be 60 in Nov so I’m hoping it’s not too bad come my birthday. Fingers crossed 🤞
BTW your hair growth journey from Pixie to current looked amazing.
I’m going to take pics as you suggest as I think I’ll regret it if I don’t.
    Thanks again 🙏🏻

Morgana MoonOwl I had so many moments of uncertainty where I almost caved in and colored. All of us do. It’s more of an emotional journey than it is a physical one isn’t it? It sounds like you have a good plan in place! Good luck!

I cut mine short, short. I didn't enjoy coloring my hair and it wasn't holding the color any more, anyway. It was really cute. I couldn't stand the spray I had to use on the short do, so I let it grow out. Now I'm noticing that I have a bit of wave/curl, so am trying to incorporate the Curly Girl Method to bring out the curl/wave. We'll see what happens, but I'm finally cutting it in a way that works better. It's about shoulder length but not as layered as hairdressers wanted to cut it. It can get frizzy, so that is where the CGM comes in. Needs lots of moisturizing. I don't want to look sophisticated, and classy but the frizz can go. It was hard to see my whiter/grayer hair at first and I tried a few temporary color rinses. They look really nice, but again, I really don't want to bother. So far, I'm glad I did it. By the way, even gray changes over time. Mine had more salt and pepper, but now is more silver. Thanks for the great video and for sharing your story.

You look so bright and lovely with your gray hair. I'm making the decision now, I've toyed with the idea of letting my gray grow out. This video is so inspiring and the insecurities about it are just that, insecurities. Thanks so much for making this video. I think I'm actually going to go gray!!! Side note: When my mother decided she was going to stop dying her hair and just go gray, I thought she looked the prettiest she ever did in all the later years of dying hair and running from the gray. I will probably be contacting you about the color matching!

This is the best video I have seen about transitioning to silver. Thank you! I have been thinking about starting the journey for about a year now and your advice has helped me decide on the route I want to take. I'm stopping the dyeing process! I am going cold turkey! This is my birthday month. I am celebrating my 58th birthday and 30+ years of coloring my hair by embracing my grey. Wish me luck!
