My hair color is black, and the silver horizon was stark. I wanted to ditch the dye in my 50s but didn't start until 60. I bought fun silver wigs so I could get used to seeing myself with silver hair. I knew it would not work unless I loved my image in the mirror. I got So many compliments! Five years later I still get compliments everytime I leave the house. I mean it. I never got so many compliments in my life. I love it and wouldn't think of dyeing my hair again

Totally agree. I think its so much easier now that silver is actually a desirable color choice, so much that young women are even choosing it. Sometimes i wish i had more silver, I'd totally give it a shot. Unfortunately i don't think I have enough salt in my pepper yet for the look I want. Lol. Maybe someday @@nikkiturnup1688

Last time I highlighted my hair March 2023. I spoken with my hairdresser I wanted to go gray. She gave me a negative comments. In 3 months I return. I told her I was serious about going gray. Now I am using the dye strips like every 6 months. Getting a haircut as normal. It's make me love my gray. I can't wait for all the gray to come on out. So I can see what I will look like. I use purple shampoo and conditioner once a week. My hair is thicker, softer, and no frizzy. She is right choose your method. Not to long ago I wouldn't look in the mirror now I look every time I get a chance. See the new gray

I was fed up with coloring my roots so I just went cold turkey, I was tempted to shave it off but I opted to cut it really short instead, my hair is long now & I’ve totally embraced my gray, it looks more natural for a woman my age than the stark dark brown plus it’s a lot healthier. Your hair is beautiful.

I started my growout at age 55, 2 years ago this November. It took me about 18 months total with 3 very expensive blending sessions from dark brown. I fried my hair. I was impatient and I work professionally, so I felt like I had to try to look better theough the process. Took months and months and going shoulder length to get my hair to feel normal again. Not to mention the cost of each salon visit. Past it all now, so hindsight is 20/20. Your hair is beautiful.

OMG I did the same thing. Asked my stylist to "blend" it and wound up with super fried hair that turned a dingy yellow and I had to chase it with toners for freaking ever. Finally found L'oreal LeColor gloss in Silver slate, which totally hides the brassy ends which are now FINALLY ALMOST GONE. anyway, If I had to do it over, I would NEVER blend it. unless I had access to Jack Martin and zillions of dollars. :)

Update: I used overtone extreme silver on my entire head today! Left on fir about 25 min. I have naturally dark hair with salt and pepper , 8mos grow out. The results were AMAZING! Made my silvers sparkle, toned down the brasiness, and overall made my whole look more congruent! I recommend! I plan on leaving it on for a bit longer next time. I only wash my hair once a week or so, but do rinse and condition every few days. I’ll update how long the color lasts

I keep hearing about Overone, but there are MANY more affordable options. For those who want the Overtone results without the cost, I recommend semipermanent colrs like the ones the kids use to dye their hair pink or purple. I use the Adore line, which costs about $6 a bottle and is available in most beauty supply stores or Amazon.
Cuurently I use Mystic Gray, which is a dark silver color that helps blend my colors, makes my gray sparkle, and makes my hair soft and shiny.
Adore is amazing. I used Adore dyes even when I regularly colored my hair, to brighten colors and make my hair shine. It's like a color gloss and toner all in one. BTW it also comes in Platinum and Titanium, which are lighter grays. Strongly recommended.

@@abbyromero8837 Not to cover gray, no. I found that back when I was still covering my gray roots, semipermanent dyes like this were useless at covering gray. Back then, I would use a demipermanent or permanent on the roots and use semipermanent colors for tone/shine. Adore also makes a clear, no-color version if you just want to add shine and softness with no color.
Note: Don't know if this matters to you, but I just found out Adore is not a vegan formula. May switch to Arctic Fox or Lime Crime, which are similar products.

I use Overtone’s extreme silver on my salt and pepper hair and I’ve never had an issue with it not washing out. I love my gray, but I miss the contrast of dark hair against my fair complexion. The extreme silver gives me just enough depth so there’s more contrast without looking fake. On my hair , it does give a slight purple cast in some lighting, but I like that. I’ve also mixed Overtone colors for fun in the past and have never had a problem with it not washing out. But everyone’s hair is different, so test strands are the way to go!

Just stumbled upon your video and am glad I did! I have naturally curly, dryish hair. Not kinky curls, more like loose ringlets currently just about shoulder length. I've been coloring my hair for 10+ years primarily because I am vain. I had 3 children late in life (I had my youngest of 6 when I was 46 years old) and I didn't want to look like their grandmother! Now at 67, I've decided I don't want to put chemicals on my scalp anymore. My last dye job was from a box about 2 months ago, so I am well in to the "grey roots showing" phase. My thought was I would basically shave my head and start from scratch, but it's winter . . . Brrrrr! 😊 May try your Overtone trick to see how that works. Or maybe I'll get a wig!❤😂😂

I’ve been dying my hair since I was 28, going grey early is hereditary in my family.
I decided to stop colouring my hair during the lockdown for the pandemic. It wasn’t hard for me to do at all, I just stopped & never thought about what the repercussions could be! I have a very thick skin anyway & didn’t care what people thought or said to my face! I lost my husband & mother in the same year when our only child was 4 years old. It’s made me tougher as well as not caring about myself any more. I don’t care what I look like because I never want to be with anyone else! I concentrated on bringing up my son the best I could on my own as I had no other family alive & my husband’s family dropped both my son & I literally after a couple of months after my husband’s funeral. My son, if ever hardly sees his dad’s family. He’s extremely lucky if he gets a Christmas or birthday card!
    Anyway, I digress!
I now have completely natural salt, pepper & white waist length hair.
My son recently started at a new school & I was invited to go along to his year’s revising encouragement evening.
We got ready & drove over to his school. When we pulled up outside his school he told me he didn’t want me to go in because I looked too old to be his mum compared to his friend’s mums!
I was absolutely gobsmacked, I wanted to die instantly on the spot because the pain in my heart was unbearable!
I managed to utter an “ok" & he got out. As soon as he had shut the car door tears welled up in my eyes but I forced myself not to cry! I was so shocked & hurt by what my son had said but also incredibly angry, how I didn’t scream at the top of my voice, I’ll never know!
Moments later my son got back into the car & ushered me to go. I drove off at warp speed & all the way home! I was so angry, I wanted to slap him but I didn’t & instead drove like an absolute idiot & way above the speed limit! I hated the way he made me feel & the fact I could have killed us both or even worse someone else!
The next day I went out & bought some hair dye. When my son came home from school & saw the hair dye his eyes light up. It’s been over a month now since I bought the hair dye & it’s still sitting on the side. My son hasn’t said a word to me about it but everyday he looks at the boxes of hair dye. I now absolutely hate my hair & myself & feel very conscious of how old I look! I don’t want to start dying my hair again, it’s just too much bother & to be honest I don’t really have the funds to keep dying it every 2 weeks!
Your “grey hair" looks like it’s only on one side & at the front by the video. It’s looks absolutely gorgeous! I have more white then grey at the front but the rest of it is salt & pepper & it’s all over my head. I’m wondering if I should dye my hair a metallic silver like those gorgeous girls advertise in the tv commercials! Maybe if my hair was a “funky"colour my son wouldn’t feel embarrassed of me!?

My mom's hair went silver before she was 30. She had me when she was 42. As a 6 yr old, I became terrified that my parents were going to die any moment, as their hair was silver, and my friends' parents' hair was brown, blonde, etc. Perhaps coloring your hair for your son's sake wouldn't be such a bad thing? My parents were known as wonderful people, and my mom's beautiful silver hair was admired, everywhere she went. Maybe explain to your son that some younger people get grey hair, and for others, they don't get grey hair until they are much older. Not an easy decision. I just saw a product called glosser, which makes grey hair shiny and more manageable. On the flip side, I do color my hair, but I use permanent color. You should not have to be dying your hair every two weeks. My shades of grey do not look good with my skin tone, so I look washed out. I'm thinking of stopping coloring my hair, but I'll have to do something due to this argument between the grey and my skin tone. I didn't get my mom's beautiful silver, lol. PS Maybe talk with your son, letting him know you are not angry with him. He's just a kid, and was telling you how he feels and why, not a very easy thing to do sometimes, but so very important that he continues to do so. Maybe this would help you decide. My husband passed away six years ago. We didn't have any children. It is difficult, to say the least. Best Wishes to you and your son!

I hope you have not yet dyed your hair. It takes years to grow out gray hair to long again. Instead, discuss it with your son. You do not need your son’s approval, AND (more importantly) he doesn’t need his friend’s approval of his mother’s hair. It’s a teaching moment.
      1) My best friend in elementary school had 5 older siblings, and her mom was short and plump with long, stark-white hair, pale skin and piercing blue eyes. When other kids said snide remarks about her “old” mother, she said calmly her mother might be older, but she is smart and she is kind and always there for me-what about yours? Or she’d say, “And?” Sarah was by far the most self-assured kid in our class.
      2) My sister’s hair grayed prematurely and she had her daughter at 40. She rocks her long gray hair, flaunts it even. No apologies. Her confidence gives her child the confident example that who she is as she is just fine.

@@JustB-cuz There is also nothing wrong with understanding, at her son's age, being similar to their peers is very important. I remember that time. Not that this mom must dye her hair, but that she may consider dying it until this pre/early teen phase is over. PS My long hair, like many others, grows very fast. It doesn't always take even a year, much less years.

Maybe go to a stylist for an updated cut? Chop some length. It may not be the grey so much as you let yourself go, and you look, and act, old in other ways. Start caring about your appearance and presentation, wear different clothing, etc.
He felt safe and loved enough to tell you how he feels, so it's your turn to honor his feelings. Sometimes the truth hurts. Imagine how hard it was for him to tell you that.
It'll do you some good to become fashionable again. Maybe drop a pound or 2, etc. You'll both benefit ❤

I thought by adding highlights over time I'd be able to achieve lightening my hair enough to dye it silver like the famous Jack Martin style. However after four years and two different colorists and thousands of dollars and hours of time I am chasing my tail. The colorists both continued to dye my new growth a level 6 and undoing the entire process. Now I have a calico cats hair. Salt and pepper roots and brassy highlights. I think highlights are probably the worst thing you can do unless you are already light or have Jack Martin money to do it one step.

I don't expect to ever go completely grey. Anyone in my family retained the salt and pepper look.
What I did find is sun damage is real. I became calico working in the yard despite the hat. Formally brunette, my end's turned orange.
Once I used purple shampoo for two minutes, the shades darkened and blended lifting my grey to silver.
This year, I'm wearing a scarf braid to better protect and tucking.

It took me a year to grow out my grays. I have short hair (neck length). I went cold turkey and cut my hair to a pixie cut.
Then….. stupidity came. I decided to use a box dye (silver) to see if I can brighten my grays. I don’t know where I went wrong, over processed or whatnot. It turned my grays into a brassy yellow 😭
Now I have to start over again! Oh well, lesson learned.

I let my hair go gray during the shutdown. When we started going out and about, my salt/pepper was 5 inches with a sharp transition to faded black dye. I had a wedding to go to and didn’t want that ugly line. Rather than cut it, I went to my stylist and had her “balayage” black low-lights into my hair to break up the line. That was the last time I dyed it. The contrast looked great, and the staggered transition looked very natural as it grew out. I use a high-quality purple shampoo to whiten the whites and a blue color corrector on the ends to bump up the fading black color. A few more trims and the original dyed ends will be gone.

I grow it out, i freak out, i dye it, it doesn't last, i tone it, it lasts less and costs way to much to wash out in 6 to 8 washes. I use SILVER protein powder now and shaek it into my brassy blonde. I am so sick of it all. I"m 64 and growing it out. About 2.5 inches of mousy gray/brown hair from a dyed blonde. This shouldn't be rocket science. I love my brown hair and have been dying it since age 28, but I'm 56 now. We're both lean and fit and even like how I look in a bathing suit after two kids. I'm so vain but soooo tired of dying it. Interesting idea about dye strip technique 🤔. My roots are white and mixed gray depending on the place on the head, I’ve been dying my hair for 17+ years since 30 :(. So tired of it and admire women who go gray and stopped dying hair. Yet the process seems daunting. Also I look much younger than my age and it would contrast too much.
Part of me wants to do it and another part postponing till 50-55 dreaming of a gorgeous balayage when I get rich 😎. Anyways dying hair in a salon / with a pro hairdressser got quite expensive and my hair often turns much darker than the color on the box (whether with Wella from Sally Beauty in Canada or mainstream dyes like L’Oreal and other brands).
In terms of copper brassy tones, I guess it depends on how it looks. It might be ok for some people. I like copper (light orange) tones on me.

I colored my hair last almost a year ago. It’s shocking how slow your hair grows🫣
It’s a daunting process and I’ve wanted to give up many times. Going to a hairdresser to cut your colored, damaged ends is torture. They discourage you (most do!).
People have made comments, I’m too young to go silver (43 yo)… it’s an act of rebellion but I keep looking at the positives: not having to dye my hair hair every 3-4 weeks, the expense and time, all the damage it goes and the continuous search for ways to curb the damage you’re doing to your hair. Totally counterproductive. So I decided to just accept and let it be. :)
