One thing that never gets enough praise is how well Heckseville's arquitecture and structure was made. Often is superhero games the city is just a bunch of grey skyscrapers, stock houses and trees. In GR the city, meshed with the artstyle makes for such an interesting place to just walk around and explore, sadly there's not a lot in there and the AI doesn't do much but walk around but even then it's so fun to just fly from point to point looking at how cool things are, technology, markets, places where people live, even the barron and even eerie parts from the city that humans can't access to are cool looking, Kat being able to fly around was used to it's full potential when it comes to the "playground" and that's why I feel the game, although short, can stretch it's lenght, even though fast-traveling it's a thing in the game, I did not use it once, I would just rather take my time flying around, maybe even walk a little, it's just too pretty.

    • @fishbonesinc

Yeah but what architecture style is it? Huh?

    • @gurglinghermits3043
      @gurglinghermits3043 7 лет назад +1

i'm so glad someone brought this up. Heckseville is not only beautifully designed but makes sense in its architecture. it's the one time in a game like this where walking around and not using your powers is a valid option since you can get from one part of the island to the other without having to use your abilities. everything feels like it has a place and a purpose and the designers have my respect for that.

Wouldn't calling Kat a superhero... If we can call her a superhero, then technically we can call Cardcaptor Sakura or Sailor Moon superheroes too right? And by that logic, we could also say Wonder Woman, Spider Gwen or Captain Marvel are magical girls.

I have no reason to believe otherwise but Gravity Rush has a very honest PS2 Classic atmosphere around it.
It's an utterly mesmerising game and it rewards those that pay attention when it comes to the narrative.
There are many mysteries still left unanswered at this point so I'm very excited to finish Gravity Rush 2 now that I finally have it after all these years...

Nick Chugg I was getting these really nice Spyro vibes from the first one. A big world that's fun to explore, fun challenges based on the immensely satisfying core mechanics, etc.
Anybody who loves games like that should look into Gravity Rush.

Thanks for making this, Gravity Rush is one of my favourite games that I can never get people to play so I'm glad this will spread the word a bit more.
Also a quick bit of trivia regarding the music: The soundtrack was composed by Kohei Tanaka, who is also the composer for the anime One Piece, which explains why a lot of the songs have the same feel as the show.

One thing that suprised me was the verticality and the depth of the levels,it's one of those things that you wish every open world had,how you can fly around and inside it,how it seems to be a real city where you could just walk and find interesting stuff and approach that from every angle just blew me away.

The song from Red vs. Blue titled "Falling Towards the Sky" just became this game's official unofficial theme in my book. Also, thank you for making this video, as I've been greatly intrigued by this series since I saw a trailer for the sequel shortly before getting my PS4, however I was really unsure of what to expect from it, and this makes me really excited to play it. As far as the simple combat system... well that's never really bothered me in games unless its also extraordinarily clunky and awkward, it's supposed to be the games selling point, or it's an RPG where your gonna be using it a lot for a long time.

    • @JustinTK416

So, having completed the game's story a few days ago, and taking a little time to try out some of the challenge missions, find some secret enemies, collect the time traveler narrative in full and search every corner and crevice for super gravity amethysts before I move crack open the sequel, I can back everything HyperBit says, except for the part about completing it in two sittings, as It took me more like four or five when you add in time for exploring areas, scrounging for gems to upgrade your abilities, checking out sidemissions, and throwing the protagonist across the city and a few unfortunate bystanders to their would-be death were the game an ounce more realistic. One thing I feel like I should say about the combat system is that, while it can certainly get repetitive, as long as you get gems (by collecting them or through challenges) and upgrade the gravity kick as well as the special attack that lets you bomb enemies with meteors to thin out what would otherwise be long and somewhat tedious engagements, it's not so bad. Also, two things everyone should know going into this are A: Pressing down on the D-pad realigns the camera with actual down while you're floating, and whatever down currently applies to you if you're standing. B: Up on the D-pad is first person, and you can fall and fly around in this perspective until you land. I do also have one sidenote about the protagonist, and it can good or bad depending on your taste, but Kat is essentially an amnesiac with every other anime girl cliche wrapped up with a bow of good, nice, and optimistic, with moments of sass that help make moments of dialogue pretty amusing, not quite funny, but occasionally warranting a grin. Now with that text wall of footnotes out of the way I think I'm done here... oh wait, there is one more. Protag is adorable.

Gravity Rush in my opinion is such an underrated gem that isn't appreciated enough. The game really reminds me of the PS1/PS2 days of Japanese gaming with quirky but charming humor and a higher essence on gameplay with creative aspects of refreshing game mechanics. I really miss those days when games were trying to be creative and fun. Nowadays it's more about focus testing, trend followers or repetitive checklist if anything. But this year is actually shaping up a bit at least. I think Gravity Rush would have been more appreciated during the PS2 days but because of the limited memory capacity of the tech it would have been hard to utilize the mechanics on a dated hardware especially when the game relies heavily on physics. I can't wait to play the sequel but I've heard the game is running at 30 fps so after playing the first one on PS4 it would probably feel jarring at first.

I love how they adress that heavy gravity around black holes (basically the gravity storms) slows down. The massive storm at the base of the pillar means that you experience less at the base while the middle sees more events pass (a year of middle time is equivalent to an ambiguous handful of days at the base) while the top of the pillar experiences exponentially more. I just wish theyd tied it to gameplay somehow.

Again, I'm finding your videos to be extremely timely. You always seem to bring out videos on stuff that I'm playing or thinking about at the time. I guess it's not a huge surprise, with the sequel out recently, but I picked this game up a few months ago and totally fell in love with it. It's so full of energy and fun, and that soundtrack! Quickly became on of my all-time favourites. Currently about 2/3 of the way through GR2 as well. It's not massively different. It simply builds a lot on what came before. But there's nothing wrong with that. It's a blast.

So there's this Ice-Pick Lodge gamedev studio that is mostly known for their survival-horror about mysterious city covered in fog, but then they went to make an upbeat and bright game about gravity manipulation.

Just finished this game a few days ago. Absolutely loved the exploration. Being able to just fall and fly to get anywhere makes getting around so fun. The story is a little too vague at times, and the combat can be pretty frustrating, but I enjoyed the game a lot. Music/art was great as well. The kind of light hearted game I've been missing. Just got the sequel, and am enjoying it even more. Highly recommend both!

I had the same experience. When I played the game on the PS4 I got the feeling that the game was much longer on the Vita.
I don't think it's because it got shorter but rather it's because we'd already played it before. Even if we might no remember everything in the game we know where things are and where to go. Muscle memory comes back fast for the trial missions and challenges. We don't explore as much because we've already have.I had the same experience when I played Okami on the PS3. It took me 80 hours the first time I played it on the PS2 but I beat it in around 40 or 50 on my second play through on the PS3.
So, it's not shorter. People playing it for the first time will take as long as we did on the Vita, it's just that we've already know where stuff is.

This is the only open world game that I can say I liked and is also good.
In perfect honesty I cannot say that open world games as a genre are good because of one thing that Gravity Rush does that no other open world game does. Gravity rush is built vertically while all other (or at least the vast majority of) open world games are built to be as wide and flat as possible.Recently I have seen franchises suffer for attempting open world such as MGSV and FFXV to name two, and while I personally enjoy those games, I could never say they are good, in fact they are both downright bad sometimes.
Gravity Rush was bought on a whim by me quite recently (I didn't even know about the sequel until the day after i bought it) and i spent three whole days beating the game to absolute completion. It's so much fun that i honestly struggle to think of it as an open world game at all really.

Karl Eriksson If you're trying to decide which one needs your support more to stay relevant, I'd say Gravity Rush. Yakuza's been getting a lot more publicity recently, while Gravity Rush only really has a cult following.

Won't be picking up Gravity Rush 2 just yet. Between Kingdom Hearts, RE7, and Yakuza 0, I just don't have the money for it. Plus I have to finish Gravity Rush on my Vita.

tbh i think combat wise it shouldn't be DMC or Bayonetta style, I think the combat like the travel is suppose to feel like your barely in control and flying by the seat of your pants, I see it more as an abstract platforming game where you direct the ground pounds than an action beat em up.

I wanted to get the second game but I REALLY wanted to play the first before I do, so now I have to wait a bit before I can afford the second game.

The game tells you pretty early on that there are unlockable costumes and they're shaded out in the menu but its pretty obvious what they are. The maid, schoolgirl, catwoman.
