      Social Media really distracts me from focusing on what more important thing to do. It steals my time and attention which I must spend with my daughtet and husband. I really want to cut it out. This week I have gone 18 months without using any internet on my smartphone (which the exception of Wattsapp to stay in touch with family and friends). So I have basically used it like a normal phone, with calls and texts only. It has freed up so much of my time, and definitely made me more relaxed. (Although I wasn't really a social media type user anyway, it was being used more for general reading on the internet etc). I have also done lengthy news media fasting in the past, which I would also highly recommend.

    • @MalamaLife
      @MalamaLife  4 года назад +5

      That is such a great suggestion! I have never tried a news media fast, but I need it now more than ever. After reading the news nowadays, I found myself feeling more down and depleted, so maybe the fast will help. Thank you so much.
      Also, so cool that you went 18 months without any internet on the phone! that is pretty impressive

    The book written about Nietzshe's philosophy helped me think about the relationship between me and digital midea. The point was 'balance'. The book said that the good thing is not cutting off but controling the stuffs that could ruin our life if it is excessive. I agree with this view and think that refusing every social media and digital devices is not the answer. I actually tried it. But it gave me the feeling that watching youtube videos or using instagram are the vice thing. However, it's not!! It's right that it has side effects, but it also has good effects. So now, i am tring to find a balance between the screen time and my life time that fits to me. And this video helps me find that balance much more easier! thank u!!

    Every day, one ought to hear a little song from her muse, read a good poem and talk about it laying under the Hawaiian sky all night, see a fine picture of herself from 10 years ago, reminisce on the good memories and cherish how far she has come. And, to speak a few reasonable words and find that the most beautiful moments of life happen in silence. Where words leave off, our search for truth begins. You're an inspiration, my friend. I took a break from social media for a week only and it gave a huge impact. It changed me. I felt so good and now I no longer have the urge to scroll social media mindlessly. This was super interesting. I use social media for promoting my music but found that I'm just spending hours a day on twitter and TikTok rather than spending time with the people that matter, my wife and my 2 children. There's also so much negatively on social media which is mentally draining in itself, especially on Twitter. Apart of me wants to remove all social media and just retain youTube just to get rid of that weight but then I'm concerned I can't really share my content widely.

    Well done and good points Sophie! Some things we do are:
    Limit the phones in restaurants when you should be conversing. Turn them off and stow them away.
    Have them accessible if you want to share pics with other friends that are joining you at the restaurant.
    Limit the time at night, turn the phones off, and recharge away from bed. I tell Gayle to hold her “newsbreaks” until morning, unless it involves a loved one. Let’s sleep! 😴😴
    Limit the social media apps to two or three.( I prefer FB and IG). That’s enough to stay informed what your friends are doing.

Affiliate marketing, youtube and online jobs engage u in work then also just do ur assignment and come out of it. Be with nature and family. @@MalamaLife In the end, all things in life boil down to information. Some go as far as to say reality *is* information. "Real life" and browsing the internet are just different methods of obtaining information. What's important is whether the amount, timing and content of the information you consume (your "information diet") are appropriate. (Similarly, a healthy diet depends on the amount and quality of the food, not on whether you go and pick it up or have it delivered to your door.)

    Hi Sophie!
    Love this video and your perspectives on social media, especially as I try to reestablish some balance in my life! As a social media “old timer” with a long history of social media usage, I’ve invested lots of hours online, especially on Facebook and Instagram. For the most part, I’ve used social media as a relationship builder and shared photos and rich conversations with people of a range of ages and from lots of places around the world - all while enjoying my local Atlanta area friends!
    I feel blessed and enriched by all the people I’ve gotten to know. Yet, life flows on. People grow and move on to new interests. I still keep in contact with some online friends. Yet, today, social media tends to be more of a utility for me, bringing me news, education, self-development, articles, and some entertainment. While I’ve put my emphasis on the practical and informational, I find it’s still easy to get lost in scrolling. So, I appreciate your recommendations for a minimalist approach!
    Have a wonderful week!

    • @MalamaLife
      @MalamaLife  4 года назад +1

      I think it's great that you use social media for practical reasons! that is a goal I am trying to reach and taking baby steps to get there. When social media was new in my life, I was so fascinated with its capabilities. But now, I find myself craving real intimate conversations with my friends and family over tea or coffee :) Hopefully I can find a balance. Thank you so much for the comment Walter

      @@MalamaLife Hi Sophie! As always, I appreciate your reply, and how you extend the conversation so nicely. I agree that nothing beats having face-to-face conversations with friends. Unfortunately, during this time of COVID that’s a bit more challenging but always worth the effort. It’s interesting and ironic that COVID has actually curtailed interaction with online friends as well. Regarding tech, even in using it as a practical tool, I still accumulate a significant amount of screen time - but I keep working at reducing it for more balance. Yet, that’s the thing about balance, I guess. It’s not static and requires continual adjustments! Have a great week!

So what I’ve done is try to zero in on RUclips channels that actually offer insight, guidance, faith and serenity....so this channel Malama Life, girlandtheword, Bayoona, Fairyland Cottage, Rachel Talbott, and initwithJinnie I have to look up the correct spellings but all of these channels are unique yet worth viewing and help me to focus, and bring calmness to my reality! Great video Sophie. I appreciate how you speak to both the consumers and creators in social media as digital minimalism affects both groups in different ways. I would be lying if I said I consume less social media and RUclips as a creator, but I definitely find myself getting sucked into the rabbit hole of "Wait, a video about Neo isn't the one from the matrix? I need to watch that!" But between, work, physical activity, creating RUclips videos (+ supporting other RUclips creators), relationships, reading....I just don't have time for excessive social media. But I guess I have issues in the other realms when it comes to adopting a slow living/mindful lifestyle. I really enjoy your videos. So what did you do in your past life or to afford your current lifestyle? I agree with this concept as well. reduced social media makes my mind much more clear

    Hi Sophie hopefully your video gets shared alot because theres too much social media. The only social media i do is comment on youtube videos like yours and a few others thats it. Maybe its my age but i cant get into it people arguing or showing off there material things, or throwing news out there that might night be true. Its insane my wife is on it alot and she tells me things and my reply why even look at that if it upsets you. Just my opinion if it was used right like you said staying in contact with your family thats great but i just think its abused and people get sucked in. But i really liked your video and if everyone took your advice it would be alot better.

    • @MalamaLife

      I agree with you that we are abusing it! It was a tool to stay connected, to network...etc, but now it has evolved into something much more and I'm not sure if I like where it's going. I don't know how much of the damage is reversible, but I hope that we can all try to enjoy life more without those screens! I appreciate it EVEN more that you take the time to watch my videos and leave a kind comment each time. Thank you!

    Hi, I LOOOOVVVEE your content. This is visual ASMR 💜
    I'd love to know what your work day looks like. Guess I just want to feel reassured that this isn't another rich person who has the means to live a fun life. Sorry, the cynic in me has grown skeptical cos of instagram influencers 😭

    I have deleted fb from my phone few months back, I use it from my laptop when needed. In this way, I reduced it. Next target is deactivating fb.

    I've recently installed a phone usage timer and it helped me to spend less time on my phone.
    I've also bought a radio, an alarm clock, a kitchen timer, etc (to use that instead of my phone). That helped a lot too! Otherwise you pick your phone but now i don't have to and then your lost in no time..
    I've also decided not to use my phone An hour after walking up and before going to bed.
    But it's still tempting though..

    Would love your advice...I have a family member who posts on a business account but I don't enjoy her content anymore. I want to unfollow but not sure what that looks like. She does have a personal account that I would keep following though. 🤔
