We humans waste astonishing amounts of money on collecting unwanted items and then spend the rest of the lives throwing them out. What a waste! We should think many times before adding a single item to our shopping list. Always think how you can do without it. Materials don't add value to your life. Peace is what adds value to your life. The more you throw out the more you become happy. You are creating space both physically and mentally.
The sentimental thing is the hardest thing to do, few days ago I was in tough dilemma. I kept my late father’s t-shirt, but every time I see it, it only brings sad memories, it was the t-shirt he used on his last days. I finally decided to get rid of it. My memory of him should not be attached on a mere t-shirt. It should be more than that. Always love your video Sophie...
I can only imagine the great deal of courage and acceptance to let go of that t-shirt. I can't speak from experience because I don't think I ever had to let go of something with such significance. I think you amazing for letting it go and for knowing that his memories will always be with you.
I actually had this same issue yesterday. My mom passed away last year on Halloween. My sister and I each took only a few items a piece and one of mine was a shirt of hers. Since she had dementia she was in a home and therefore her initials are written on the tag of a shirt, just like a child's would be if they were in daycare... I put the shirt on yesterday and felt so sad when I saw the initials... It made me remember her as she was in the end instead of how she was when she was well. I think it may be time to let that one go... I'm so thankful to see your comment and know I'm not alone with this feeling.
Me and my husband had to start minimalism. There was one time he was like I DONT HAVE SHIRTS TO WEAR! I counted all his shirts that night and counted 74 shirts and 8 pants. I told him afterwards, he was very disappointed with himself. We started to sort out his clothes, sold some and then donated most. Now he has 15 shirts and is very happy with it. He gets to wear all of them in 2 weeks (just in time for laundry) and we have so much closet space! IT is the way to go
It is eye opening to actually start counting the pieces of clothes we have in our closet. I felt the same! having a capsule really makes getting dressed easy for me 🥰 thanks for sharing
I came across your channel by accident and can I just say I have been binge watching your videos. Your lifestyle and encouragement is just what I needed. Thank you for sharing your story. I am trying to apply all these aspects in my life right now. :)
Your little dog looks exactly like my Joey! He was a rescue and he was so afraid of everyone and everything when we got him 6 years ago. Now he's King of the World! He's just the best little guy! Can't imagine our lives without him.
Joey sounds so adorable :) I think dogs are just the best and I am learning so much from my two little dogs. Seeing them become happy and confident gives me so much joy
hi Sophie! your voice is so soothing. every time I feel overwhelmed with piles of workloads, I pause for a while, go over your vlogs again. your voice remind me to keep calm always, and your videos were always my reminder not to go out of track of minimalism. thank you so much!
Im going to try this. Im at a point of being so overwhelmed it is effecting my mental health and i have no idea where to start. If i sit down i feel so guilty. I cant enjoy my home or anything i love bc my home is over run with stuff. Yet i cant let a lot of the stuff go and think i will need it. A lot of things just dont have a home and i know the majority is still good and usuable and wouldnt make sense to throw out bc we would have to repurchase so its tiring and chaotic trying to sort and organize and bc we need a lot of the stuff it feels like very little is being donated/sold/trash. Were a family of 2 adults and 5 kids so we have accumulated a lot of stuff. Im going to give this a really good shot bc it seems realistic and not overwhelming. Thank you for the video🙏❤
I can imagine how you feel. It is similar to how I was feeling before I started decluttering. It was so exhausting and tiring to manage all my stuff and I finally learned my lesson from it. Thank you so much for watching and I hope that this video was helpful
Try the “minimal mom” here on RUclips. She has particularly great videos for decluttering toys and kids clothes and or course the rest of the house. She was a great help to me.
I've been feeling lost in life for a long time and feel unhappy most of the time. I found your channel few days ago and have watched some of your videos. There's a calmness about you that inspires me to hear more. Today this video inspired me to declutter my lounge. Your videos are helping me get one step closer too maybe feel happier 😊
Hello Sophie, I minimized nearly six years ago, and it's interesting to see how we can often find other items to declutter as time goes on. I really enjoyed this video. Your voice is so lovely and soothing.
Just found your channel and love it! Everyone, if you want to donate clothes (or really any other items) to a nonprofit, please, please, please call ahead. I used to work at a homeless center and oversaw donations like this. You wouldn't believe all the clutter we had because people dropped things off we didn't even need/couldn't even store in mass amounts. This made the clients who already struggled with anxiety, high levels of stress, and mental illness to be even more overwhelmed with all of the stuff. Not all orgs have a huge volunteer/staff base to sort all the stuff.
Thank you so much for sharing Maddy! Yes that is so important. I see people just dumping outside of nonprofits and that is definitely not ok. Happy holidays to you
If it good condition, I give my books to the local library, that way I know I can always borrow them in the future if I really want you. And it's unlikely I actually will, but it gives a sense of security!
Excellent video as usual, didn’t see any quotes this time but I always like when you include them. You’re very beautiful & your husband is a lucky man. As far as this dumpster fire of 2020, I’ve realized a few things. *Need to limit spending, especially online. I’ve bought more online this year than any other. Yea, I could blame it on COVID but I could also limit my spending on unnecessary things. I’m pretty minimalist as it is but spending like this and I won’t be for long. * Focusing on myself and not trying to seek external validation to make me feel like I’m worthy. I always try to go out of my way and be nice to people and sorry to say it’s not really worth it. Everyone seems fake & superficial nowadays and I’m guilty of trying to please people that really don’t matter. So going forward, I’m just going to focus on me. My inputs, habits, outputs and just my overall health. I’m tired of people.
I find myself spending way more if I buy stuff online, so this is something I am definitely working on. When I go into the store, I usually stop when the basket feels heavy and it limits me from over spending. Love what you said about feeling self worth when we let go of external validation. I think this is why I am so attracted to slow living because I can just concentrate on myself and what I love doing. More quotes coming up in future videos :)
Relationships with the right people make life rich. Find people who have integrety, are authentic, are caring, and respectful, fun and full of life. Be the kind of friend you want them to be. No one is perfect but these kind of people are out there. You just have to be patient and keep looking.
Aw thank you so much! My closet still needs so much work because I still have clothes I haven't worn in a long time, but definitely a video idea for the future :) thank you
I like the thought about prioritizing value over the cost of something...its still very hard to let go of something you paid big bucks for but is not serving much of a purpose.
I gave all my stuff to charity and friends. I've kept 5 boxes of stuff at friend's houses. Packed my suitcase and back pack. Now I'm traveling SE Asia indefinitely. Never been happier. I'm free.
This video motivates me a lot. You know Sophie, the way you talk is simple and clear so it is easy to understand and comfortable to watch for the people like me, who don't speak English as a first language. I need to declutter my twin boys room for 7 days. By the way, I also like the Korean multi grain powder '미숫가루' in your kitchen :)
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your kind comments and I am so happy you liked this video too. I love 미숫가루 milkshake with banana in the mornings :) it is delicious!!
Hi Sophie. This process makes decluttering more manageable. Thanks. I just recycled some old printers and broken electronics that were just sitting around the house. My local BestBuy store took them for free! We just had to drop them off at the front counter.
Wow that is amazing! I wish we had a best buy on the island because I didn't realize how many old electronics I had hidden away in drawers! I am so glad to hear that it was helpful Sean :)
Thanks, Sophie! ❤ Listening while the refresher cleaning for home showing later...we have applied your content while downsizing & donating. ❤ Every point to which you are referring sounds like you have actually been in our home! Further decluttering is surely to happen before our move.
Last year when I was packing up and moving. I got rid of an old jigsaw puzzle of a star wars phantom menace with anakin Skywalker walking leaving his home planet and a shadow of Darth Vader a foreshadow that was his future to go to the Darkside. As a kid I loved the prequels. As an adult I can take it or leave it with those movies
Absolutely love this, minimalism is honestly the way forward and will help me reach my financial goals honestly!! Thanks for this great video!! 👌 Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! I really appreciate it :) completely agree with you that minimalism is much needed for a lot our hectic, materialistic lives.
New favorite RUclipsr. Watching your videos before going to sleep is perfect you have a lovely voice and perfect soothing background music. Plus straight to the point, great flow of points. Just a really well put together video.
Happy Friday Patricia. That is so awesome to hear! I've been taking this decluttering seriously and it has been really paying off. Glad to hear that it motivated you too :D
Oh my goodness, you cannot let go of that music box from Anastasia I have mine and I absolutely treasure it it reminds me of my childhood ❤️ great video working on decluttering as well and being more self aware.
It's one of the most difficult thing to let go, but it was sitting in my closet for too long 😆 I am giving it to my niece for Christmas so she can enjoy it more ❤ that's so cool you have kept yours! It's such a beautiful music box with nostalgic melody! Thanks so much for watching Jennifer
I am going to declutter a lot this year. We are planning on moving within the next 1-2 years and I refuse to take it all with me. Thanks for the tips❣️
Moving is such a great chance to go through all the belongings and really consider what we want to bring into the new space. I wish you the best of luck :) I'm sure it will feel amazing.
HI Sophie, just found your channel and clicked and I have to say that I'm so glad I did. Starting the New Year by decluttering each room is what is on my goals list. Who wants to spend all their time dusting each item when you can free yourself and have more time for you and what is important to you. I use to scrapbook and have so much stuff that is what I need to work on. This video is very calm and enjoyable as well. I am now a follower of yours and look forward to more videos. 😊👍 🌺
Thank you so much for sharing Rachel 🥰 I love the feeling that I get after decluttering and just being to able to enjoy my clean and organized home. I hope you made some progress in your decluttering :) thanks for watching my videos
I really like your comment about how much you paid for an item should not determine whether we keep it or throw it away. It should always be about what brings you the most value, whether you paid a lot of it, or a little. We can really get attached to things that we paid a lot for...but those items can become more of a burden than something that adds value. But I'm basically guilty of everything listed in this video. I will actually be spending some time this Thanksgiving to declutter my apartment, and I definitely know about a lot of stuff than needs to go. Love the content Sophie! Like- 103
I always appreciate your honesty Alex! I have to admit, I am so guilty of these habits too. I'm glad that I can share what I am learning on this minimalist journey through these videos in hopes of it helping others too. That is awesome you will take the time to declutter during the holidays! Please share if you find something cool :)
Dear Sophie, I love all your neat and tidy videos. I have now done my room and now it's all about maintenance. Another inspirational video. Thumbs up from me. 🙂
I heard it’s ok to have a junk drawer - just clean it out once in a while. My smallest kitchen drawers hold pens, paper, scotch tape, measuring tape and the other one is spices. I can’t only digitize my photo albums - I didn’t grow up in the Information Age lol I grew up in the Stone Age 😂😎
I am definitely trying to organize my junk drawer the best I can :) some things I need to keep because I'm also quite frugal. Hahah aww I actually love flipping through the photo albums, but digitizing them definitely organizes it more. Thanks for the comment
I prefer Stone Age photos. When my daughter was a baby, that was common. Now that she's older, I only have phone photos and it's getting hardet to find a place you can print them out.
I just found your channel and I love it! I’ve been wanting to live more intentionally, slow and minimal for awhile. Thank you so much for the inspiration. ♥️♥️
Great vid - keep feeling so happy about our minimalist & essentialist communities keeps motivating and inspiring each other through sharing content like this from so many different perspectives - and places around the world! literally just made a video also talking about books, and really identified. Thanks and Hi from London. :)
I agree! I love seeing all different types of people from different locations giving their version and perspective. I really appreciate the comment and really nice to connect with people who share similar values. Aloha! from Maui.
I've been following these videos and I love them! But I have a question for Sophie and others minimalists: I appreciate the idea of having only the dinnerware and tableware that you need. But I'm curious, what do you do when you have a large family gathering or a large dinner for friends?
I tell you how I do it... I am not extreme minimalistic, but I've worked a lot on simplifying my life and space and consider myself a moderate minimalist. We are a family of five, and regularly have a friend or two over. So I kept one of everything (cup, knife, fork, plate etc.) for 7 people and that will be enough for at least 98% of the year. We have a set of five matching glasses PLUS one special glass or cup for every member of our family. When we throw a birthday party, we might need to serve half of the cake on cake plates, and half of the cake on the normal plates for lunch and dinner, but we can care for everyone. Oftentimes we party outside and take paper plates, or everyone brings their own. If even that isn't enough for some rare special event, I go into my basement where I keep a box with stuff that was given to me or decluttered by me in the past, that matches the dishes in our kitchen - I kept that because I have 3 children and every now and then, stuff like dishes gets broken by accident. It didn't make sense to me to sell or donate this type of stuff, when I have to replace some of it at least every few months - to a family with little ones, this type of stuff counts kind of into consumables, we will use it up instead of buying new things, which we definitely would have to. My kitchen needs to be simple and workable, I don't want all that stuff to clutter up my daily life, but I DO have space to keep the extras in my basement and only keep things in there that I'll need for certain, so there's no need to get rid of them completely and later on waste more time and money to re-aquire the same things
I've been so excited to watch this video, I've saved it to watch while decluttering cause I thought it would give me some much needed motivation haha 😅 I don't know about you but I often find that I have a stint of time where I declutter loads and make good headway then a few months later I feel like I need to declutter all over again! I haven't quite reached my "clicking point" with the volume of material possessions I have but hopefully I'll get there someday. Thanks for the inspiration!
I feel the same way Kat! Even being very conscious of what I buy and what comes into my home, I feel the need to declutter my space again and again. I wonder if there is a certain point where I will be just happy with the things I have. I hope to get there someday too
Have really enjoyed your videos. Would love to see your version of minimalist clothing and personal items, perhaps a home tour? All of your videos have been very inspiring.
Thank you Katie! I am just finishing my home renovation, so a home tour is coming soon. I am doing a video on minimalist wardrobe soon so definitely look out for it 🥰
You are so so sweet. thank you so much! I am thinking about doing a Q&A soon and I would love to answer it in that video. I will ask on my community tab and also on my instagram for more questions :)
I definitely decluttered after this. However I cant get rid of sentimental items, personal preference and is irreplaceable to me. What I do is have 1 storage container and whatever doesnt fit i get rid of and keep what I mostly love keeping it still strict and content
@@MalamaLife you will regret it, I have often thought of things I should not have gotten rid of and want it back later, you are allowed to keep thing s not turn everything into a ditdital picture, it’s just not the same.
Hi Sophie! Im really love all your video clips, i did all of those things, also my relationships. Thanks so much for spent time making and sharing them! Love you!xxxxxxxxxx
It's such a beautiful music box with nostalgic melody. It is still one of my favorite disney movies. It was so hard to give it up, but now my niece can enjoy it :) I hope you can find one if it means a lot to you!
New subscribers here.. I want to learn and grow in finances.. But I'm struggling to control my emotion , buying things not really need.. Then I found your video..hoping I can do sooner,😘
I am so glad my videos can be helpful to you! It can be really difficult and I still find myself tempted sometimes. I hope to share more tips soon :) thank you for your comment!
Shelf-stable and unexpired food I donate to food pantries without a second thought. If I haven't gotten to them it either means A. I don't want to make them or B. I just don't like it [maybe did when purchased, but not now]. There is always somebody who needs food and the helping hand of a pantry. It is best to send food to them.
What are you leaving behind in 2020 ? :)
Negative way of thinking, judgement for myself, staff that doesn’t support me in my new life ❤️
Expectations to other people. It frustrates me a lot when I expect too easily with other people. So I'm cutting my expectations to all peopls
I love this so much. I need to leave these behind too
I just get disappointed when I expect things or set my own standards. I definitely want to let this go
Hoping to digitalize my check book register. But I'm so old school I can't seem to let it go just yet! Lol
You are blessed with such a soothing voice...take care of your voice.
Thank you so much! I try my best 🥰

Happy Friday Patricia. That is so awesome to hear! I've been taking this decluttering seriously and it has been really paying off. Glad to hear that it motivated you too :D
It was so nice to free up the space! Your decluttering journey is definitely motivating.
I have been watching your videos every morning. Your voice is so soothing I feel calm just listening to it!! Your content is really good too!
That's so amazing to hear! Thank you so much Wendy. I'm glad I was able to bring some calm into your day :)
I hope you made some progress in your decluttering :) thanks for watching my videos
your voice is so soothing it makes me want to sleep
Haha thank you! Hopefully it doesn't put you to sleep 😁❤
I’m just in love with your dogs! 😍😍😍❤️
They are so sweet :) thank you
Dear Sophie, I love all your neat and tidy videos.
Pens, paper, tape go in the desk. Measuring tape goes in the tool bag.
I just found your channel and I love it! I’ve been wanting to live more intentionally, slow and minimal for awhile. Thank you so much for the inspiration. ♥️♥️
Thank you so much! I am so happy that these videos can inspire you :)
Soon to reach 10k. So so so happy for you, Sophie. This is just a start. You have miles to go❣️
That is so sweet of you to say. I really appreciate it and thank you for always supporting :)
500k plus now!
Wow!
Thank You Lovely, great process 💝
😂Your dogs like...I have nothing to declutter soo nap time. I love it!
Haha they are the true minimalists! 🤣❤
I love your voice. It is so soothing and beautiful
Thanks so much Cathy 😍😍
love this idea! i definitely get stressed out thinking about all the places i need to declutter
Oh me too! it's so overwhelming to do it all at once haha. I wish you luck on your decluttering :)
Just a great and helpful video, loved it!
Iloveyou so much.. Your videos always calms down my mind... So gives me positive vibes ❤️
Thank you so much :) that really means a lot to me!
@@EasyNaturalLiving Thanks for your reply and ideas : ) I think I will try some of them!
@@jijifit382 you're welcome, hope it makes your life a bit lighter, too 👍🏻🍀
Great video 🥰 thank you! I definitely need to declutter starting from my personal things. Being clean and organized is all I need ❤️
I agree with you! Cleaning and organizing has helped my mental health and also helped me to stop shopping too :) thank you for watching!
Your voice is SO soothing!
Thank you 😊 so kind of you!
I've been trying to declutter my purse everyday. I think the biggest take away from this is that good habits are the best!!
YES! making it a habit makes everything much easier :) I need to do this every night. Thanks sis!
I hope to get there someday too
wow ! I have an idea already on how to declutter Things That we don''t need..Thank you so much sophie for your amazing video😊
Thank you for watching this one too :) decluttering feels amazing
I am so happy to have found your channel! Thank you for such great content. I crave a minimalist life and this is so helpful.
Have really enjoyed your videos. Would love to see your version of minimalist clothing and personal items, perhaps a home tour? All of your videos have been very inspiring.
Thank you Katie! I am just finishing my home renovation, so a home tour is coming soon. I am doing a video on minimalist wardrobe soon so definitely look out for it 🥰
I love how you call records, "vinyls".
When I lived on Ohau, all my friends used he same term.
Thank you for sharing, I am also on a process of becoming a minimalist. This inspires me a lot
That is so good to hear😊 so glad it was helpful to you. Thank you for watching
Your voice is so relaxing
Thank you so much Marie ❤
Omg you've got a sweet voice. The video was a bonus!
haha aww thank you so much!
Sophie , can you please make video on your hair care routine, and workout routine. You are so beautifully fit, and your hair is gorgeous.
You are so so sweet. thank you so much! I am thinking about doing a Q&A soon and I would love to answer it in that video. I will ask on my community tab and also on my instagram for more questions :)
@@MalamaLife sure! Will wait for your Q & A video 💓
I definitely decluttered after this. However I cant get rid of sentimental items, personal preference and is irreplaceable to me. What I do is have 1 storage container and whatever doesnt fit i get rid of and keep what I mostly love keeping it still strict and content
Thats such a good idea 😊 I have a hard time with sentimental items too. It's tough but after I got rid of them, I don't miss them afterwards
@@MalamaLife you will regret it, I have often thought of things I should not have gotten rid of and want it back later, you are allowed to keep thing s not turn everything into a ditdital picture, it’s just not the same.
I've limited sentimental items to our honeymoon picnic basket. (& Saved our wedding negatives in a fireproof file box; just in case)🐾
A really nice, informative, and honestly calming video. New sub!

What have you done to me? I'm addicted to your voice, information, videos. Whole channel
I saw the Anastasia music box and wanted to cry
It’s one thing I’d love to have (mainly cuz the movie is my favorite!)
Sorry if this comment is weird
It's such a beautiful music box with nostalgic melody. It is still one of my favorite disney movies. It was so hard to give it up, but now my niece can enjoy it :) I hope you can find one if it means a lot to you!
by the way, your "junk" drawer even looks cute!
hahaha it's called the power of editing!! :D It is a hot mess...
the junk drawer is the hardest part for sure. it follows me wherever I live
Yes!! I have had at least one in every house. I am trying to organize my junk drawer the best I can :)
You feel better when you do not buy what you know can afford.
Here’s to my future life with semi-minimalism.
Yes! I love that phrase. I feel better ever since adopting this mentality.
On point!❤️

You voice is sooooo soothing... 🥰
aw thanks for your sweet comment :)
I am emigrating to Dubai right now. Also decluttering, wow what a process. What you had when you moved to Portugal. I live in the Netherlands now.
That is so great and what a wonderful to think this way. You are so right there are always people who are in need. Thank you ❤
