I've spent half a century decluttering and it continues. I'm so over things - and especially thinking about them. Of course if one doesn't have much then one doesen't have to even consider them. Today walking in the nature reserve here high in the alps (lots of snow of course), I was reminded yet again how free one feels when one does not have to look or think about their stuff. Just walking in the snow carrying nothing but my phone in my pocket, was the ultimate freedom - I can really understand how some people find extreme minimalism so satisfying!
I just went through my food and spices not that long ago. I purged all my processed food and old expired food/spices. I had so much! I only cook for 2 people but i shop like I have a family of 6. It's a hard mentality to break out of.
I am glad I am not the only one like that. I grocery shop like there are 10 kids waiting at home, but its just me and mr. I have to throw away a lot of food regularly. It is wrong on many many levels. Need to work on it.
I've been decluttering my room for the last 3 months. Thank you for this. Its helping me more and more. I want to only have what I really need / want before moving to college. I hope your day is spent well :)
I had also put a LOT of paintings on the walls of one of my rooms. I began to eventually notice I would be calmer in other rooms of the house, but would become more stressed and my mind would begin to run within stressful thoughts within a few minutes of settling into the room with all the paintings all over. They were my own paintings too, so they have been my babies. But, once I noticed how I was being affected, I was able to finally take them down off the walls. I also have a hard time parting with plants - also my babies - even the fading ones. But I've finally managed to let some go. Lovely video, Sophie!
I’m definitely being much more mindful in my purchases this year. If I need to replace a broken item or an old worn out piece of clothing I will but other than that I’m being very intentional with my purchases. I have been decluttering for the past 1-2 years but not continually. It depends on how I’m feeling as I have an autoimmune disease. I’ve decided that it’s not a race and just to go at my own pace as long as I don’t give up. We have lived in our current home for almost 20 years and have accumulated a lot during these years. I am watching as many decluttering and minimalism videos as possible as I find it very motivating and inspiring. Thanks for these suggestions.😊❤️🙏
I love that you said you are just going at your own pace :) I also feel like decluttering can't be rushed. I'm so glad that this was inspiring for you. thanks for watching Debbie
I find that we often have phases in our lives, especially with material things. Therefore it’s always useful to declutter every once in a while to let go of those items that don’t have a purpose in our life anymore.
I've done some decluttering a few months back and it definitely made me so present to how much money I'd spend on very inexpensive items - things from the dollar store or even other stores but were $3 - $5 or so each. It didn't seem like much to spend at the time, but as I saw so many items I had used one or two times, or not at all in some cases, and the pile of those things must have totaled $200 at least. It was sad and it has caused me to think so much more about randomly picking something up off a shelf just because I happened to see it and it seemed great in some way. This alone has made things better for me. I do need to get back to decluttering again though. I was feeling better getting rid of things and then I stopped for some time. Great video. Thank you.
Wow!!! I can very well relate to this. Thank you. I've just been planning to declutter but illness has robbed me of the opportunity. I hope to recover and fulfill my dream.
I have done all of these things, especially in the past few months, and continue to do so until I feel like I can breathe in our home. It is so freeing! Thanks for a great video -- and so calming, too, and not frantic, like some I have seen.
Thank you for talking about things you thought you would like or collect or did like before but it’s ok to get rid of now. I really struggle with guilt getting rid of those things, like I failed by buying them but no longer wanting. Hearing you talk about gettin rid of these things without self reproach really helped me.
Love how your videos are to the point and your aesthetic is better and better :) I am not a fan of long videos no matter how much I love a certain youtuber so thank you! We decluttered all of these and more when moving half a year ago. However, I continue the process of decluttering every now and then. I am being mindful about my donations and always find most difficult to declutter clothes that don't fit anymore. At least I stopped buying that kind of clothes :D Great list! Hugs from Croatia :)
I think 10-12 min videos are a good length? but I would love feedback :) I am trying to be mindful about donations as well. thank you so much for watching
This is SUCH a great list to always keep in mind. You perfectly identified objects that many people struggle to declutter but that are just of no use and that can take up a lot of space. Since I have a similar mindset I have decluttered most of these things already - but I personally love high quality scented candles :)
These past few days, i feel impatient with myself and my progress in life. And then I watch videos like this and it reminds me to slow down. Enjoy the present. So thank you. ❤

So well done Sophie! During the cold weather and quarantine, this is exactly what Gayle and are doing now. I went through our bookcase, and got rid of many books. It looks so nice now! Thank you for making this video and others about decluttering. I have been reflecting a lot lately about what makes me feel fulfilled, and coincidentally feeling cramped in my apartment... Decluttering is helping me clear my physical space, and mental space as well. It is definitely a struggle to give away unwanted gifts or things from someone you care about. I love all your tips. New subscriber, great videos!
Last year I decluttered my closet as well as my kid’s (3) books. This year I started easy with just any trophies and medals in the house, and placed those in a plastic bin in the garage. Just finished putting most of our music CD’s in a box to be sent to Decluttr. Next week will be DVD’s and Blu-ray’s. Luv your videos
Thanks for sharing your tips for decluttering! Recently when moving house I realized how much unnecessary stuff I had accumulated over the years, Threw away lots of them but still hanging on to some especially books & kitchen accessories, After watching your video it reminder me to start reviewing the existing stuff again!
I live in Queens NYC and this city can be the paradise for both people who love to consume and collect but surprisingly also the paradise for those who are keen to declutter and detach from things. There's this concept of stooping, where you leave things you don't use anymore in front of your house, so someone who has a need for it can simply grab and take to its new home. There are several IG pages of this communities , with thousands of followers. I made a video of the things I've stooped and some that I have let go.
I donated old sheets, comforters, curtains, beach towels, clothes, etc. still got more to go, next it’s old movies, kitchen items and I have given myself a timeline. By the end of this year, I will donate all of my furniture and just keep the essentials.
This is really helpful to me, your channel in a whole. I started decluttering yesterday. When I wake up. More spacious and less stress.. starting a minimalism life.
You are truly an inspiration. You address the spiritual and emotional side of decluttering which is so important. Thank you so much for all your helpful videos!👩
I’ve just subscribed, because I love your voice and your calm, almost relaxing meditation, video’s 😁 Also I’m going to move to the tiniest house ever (almost a tiny house, love those b.t.w.) and I need to declutter… I am shocked to see how many things I have in my house right now… Most things I didn’t even remember I still kept it… But it feels so good to organize and starting to get overview! So now I’m getting more and more interested in minimalism and I’m binge watching your video’s: thank you for all your insights!
I stumbled upon your channel today and I'm hooked. You have so many great practical advice and I enjoy listening to your soothing voice. I'm great full for your videos. Stay Blessed ❤️🙂🌻🙏
I loved your calming approach to making this video, it stood out among so many others! Your voice is so relaxing and it took me to a more clear, meditative place to start my decluttering from. Thanks for this! Also, you are an ASMR natural. :)
I love your channel, it is so simple, elegant and beautiful. I love that your message is about minimalist living. I’m right on board with this lifestyle!
Thank you for sharing helpful tips ms. Sophie. Some of my books i gave to my friends, i also pre-loved some of my clothes. Now my room is tidy and organise.
I declutter today my old 3 mobile phone. Tons of my old office papers. (Photo copy, print outs. And many more documents) expired medicine. Many of electrical items. Just a bigging. Very useful video. Thank you.
I did my home office which was cluttered and it is so organized and clean. feeling good. next move is to cluttering negative people from my life which is more essential type of
I totally understand it being difficult to throw away the nice packaging of some things you purchase. I have been working on not keeping these. Clothing is always something I’m constantly working to declutter. Also trying to use better hangers. I think I will try to give away more of my books this year too. Anyways, thank you for sharing. Have a wonderful week! ☺️💕☀️
Yes.decluttering reduce messy home.i really like that process but in sometimes its really hard when we keeping items with love or emotionally binding. So whatever decluttering removes overloading and dust
Thank you, Sophie! 🤎🌿🌼 You really give great advice and insights. Hoping for more contents from you especially how you pack your luggage when you travel or the essential items we need to take when travelling 🌼🤎🌿
Thanks Sophie !! I have been decluttering my apartment since November as a result , it make life easier. As far as getting dress .looking for items or paperworks. The idea now it’s not bringing stuff to stuff empty spaces :)
I recently moved into a studio apartment and I've been de-cluttering since last July. I am seriously doing the things you've mentioned. This year will be more about sentimental items. Als, I plan to move to Portugal in a year or two- I need to be ready to move overseas, Thanks for the inspiration!
I actually really want to move to Portugal or Spain in the next year or two as well (when they allow us). This is a big motivator for me too! love that you are doing it at your own pace. thanks Melissa
I subscribed, I love your channel, you have a beautiful calming voice..I live intentionally, it is actually 5 years now, you gave wonderful suggestions, and they will help many people on their minimalist journey.. xo
This is Quite Nice and The Right Thing To Do ! I am Working in My Home to Declutter , Will Take Time Which is Ok . Outside My Home and Life, Decided Not To Be Friends With 3 People Who Are Not Really Good Friends , and Are Draining My Happiness With Their Nonsense . Thanks Sophie
I have such a hard time with unwanted gifts. I have a few of these. One is handmade and the other one is from a person who expects to see it when they visit. I sold my kayak this past weekend. That was huge because I love kayaking, but haven’t done it in a few years. The kayak reminded me of a lost friend. There’s a sporting good store that rents kayaks so I can go again when I want to. But I do feel a twinge of regret about the kayak and wondering if I’m taking minimalism too far. I buy food and have the urge to donate certain things right away. The last time I moved I had a semi full of items all on my own. That was embarrassing and ridiculous for one person. I called myself a minimalist then too, but taking a much deeper dive into minimalism. I love your very calm peaceful videos.
Thanks for sharing! As a teacher, I always kindly suggest to people who may have any school supplies (e.g. paper, pens, craft items, books, etc.) can be dropped off at schools near by for any teachers or students who may be in need of items. I promise you those items will always be put to use. ;-)
I know I'm late to this, but I might add decluttering music playlists. I'm old skool and still have an ipod, and I find I hold onto so many albums/artists that I tell myself I'll revisit but never do. So removing them is somehow a mental weight lifted, and frees up space for newer music to enter my life. (Lately I've been into a lot of dub techno and minimalist mixes.) Out with the old and in with the new. Or at the very least decluttering space and not being stressed by seeing it all taken up.
I’ve been decluttering and downsizing since I sold my home. It’s been a year around journey and I am over halfway through the excess! I need to let go of more!!! 😊🎉

What are you decluttering from your life this year? 🥰
My wardrobe! I only wear a couple key pieces, most of my clothing just sits in my drawers. Can’t wait to watch!

Thanks so much Jordan! after I throw away the packaging, I never miss it! haha

You're so sweet. Thank you so much Stephanie! Minimalism makes me feel empowered too

Yes.decluttering reduce messy home.i really like that process but in sometimes its really hard when we keeping items with love or emotionally binding. So whatever decluttering removes overloading and dust

Aw thank you!!

This is Quite Nice and The Right Thing To Do ! I am Working in My Home to Declutter , Will Take Time Which is Ok . Outside My Home and Life,
Decided Not To Be Friends With 3 People Who Are Not Really Good Friends , and Are Draining My Happiness With Their Nonsense .
Thank you. This is definitely what I wanna do.
I have all those things you mentioned and I should get rid of them but just don’t know where to start so this was helpful!!
Thank you!!
So glad it was helpful. It seems like a lot at first, but I think it helps to just do little at a time.
I do decluttering from once in a month or twice it's so useful and helpful to a peace mind
I am decluttering decor, and especially things that have to sit on surfaces. That’s what I noticed makes my space look messy
I removed a lot of those too! just a selected few is fine :) thanks for watching!

Happy to hear that ❤ thank you so much
thank you for all the decluttering ideas ♡
I hope it's helpful 😁❤
Thanks for sharing! As a teacher, I always kindly suggest to people who may have any school supplies (e.g. paper, pens, craft items, books, etc.) can be dropped off at schools near by for any teachers or students who may be in need of items. I promise you those items will always be put to use. ;-)

So great to hear that 🥰 thank you Rachel

I feel the same. My house feels so peaceful and organized
(Lately I've been into a lot of dub techno and minimalist mixes.)
Out with the old and in with the new.
Or at the very least decluttering space and not being stressed by seeing it all taken up.
I’ve been decluttering and downsizing since I sold my home. It’s been a year around journey and I am over halfway through the excess! I need to let go of more!!! 😊🎉

Totally agree about artificial scents in candles and essential oils! I noticed you have a Virtuvi, do you just use it as a humidifier? Interested in purchasing one for that purpose. Love this content!
I think it would work fine as a humidifier except it holds very little water :( the design is absolutely beautiful though 🥰
